Marius, don't forget that a natural 19 is a potential crit with a longsword.

Well, that seemed to work. Confident now after seeing the results of her hex, Jali focuses on the other skeleton.

Cackle as move action to extend Misfortune, then another Misfortune (DC 14 Will) on the other skeleton.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

"What is it? What do you see?" Jali takes a step back, attempting to get a clear view into the room. At the sight of the burning skeletons, she gasps in horror. Her first thought is to go fleeing down the stairs, but she can't abandon her friends. This is what you wanted, Jali. You wanted to be an adventurer. Did you think it would be sunshine and roses and free gold?

Face grim, Jali forces a degree of calm on herself. When the first skeleton comes rushing in, she hexes it.

Jali takes a move action diagonally south and east, to be on the opposite side of the room from the door. Then she'll use Misfortune on the closest skeleton. DC 14 Will save.

Jali knows nothing of undead, so she doesn't know that they're immune to Evil Eye. So...which hex to use? 1 = Evil Eye, 2 = Misfortune. 1d2 ⇒ 2

As Jali peers into the empty room, she notices the javelin that had been rigged to the trap. It certainly looked more effective than her tiny dagger. "Anybody mind if I take this?" Without waiting for an answer, she picks it up, then moves near the door the others are examining.

Jali steps over the unconscious troglodyte and into the next room. She holds her breath as Gregolyn fiddles with the trap, hoping he succeeds.

Jali's stomach turns a bit at seeing the troglodyte squirm with fear, as the whole situation leaves a bad taste in her mouth. Still, what else was there to do? They needed the information. "Where is this tunnel?"

"I agree with Marius. I don't think we should tarry too long. What should we do with him?"

Turning to her friends, Jali says, "Tasskar is their leader. He found tunnels to this to the tower after the earthquake." Switching back to Draconic, she says, "How many more troglodytes are there in the tower?"

"Who is Tasskar?"

Other? Had some other adventurer beaten them to the tower, only to be captured by these vile creatures? Jali again translates for the others, then, as the troglodyte moves away, says, "Stop! What do you mean, the other?"

Face grim, Jali moves toward the troglodyte. Speaking in Draconic, she says, "What do you know of this fortress? Who else is here that will prove hostile?"

Sorry, busy weekend.

Jali translates the troglodyte's words for the group, and adds, "While I have no love lost for creatures such as this, I can't much abide the idea of killing a helpless sentient being."

Forum ate my post. Grrr...

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Jali recoils in disgust at the sight of the creatures. Ugly little critters, but a bit closer to what she'd expected to find in here. At least they weren't animals. Flush with previous victories, she says, "Did we kill your pet? So sorry, but you'll join him soon!"

Jali throws Misfortune Hex (DC 14) on the closest troglodyte and moves two squares north. She has Knowledge: Arcana, History, Nature, and Planes (all at +8). Any of those apply to troglodytes? If so, Knowledge check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20. She'll relay anything she knows to the party.

Jali heads over to Anadyr, intending to attempt identifying the potions, but freezes at Marius's warning. Moving as quietly as she can, she moves away from the door, to the northeast corner.

Stealth check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Jali moves to the square at the intersection of the north and the northeast walls, right in between the two puddles.

Jali moves forward and laughs at seeing the lizard flee in terror, although the bite in her side dulls the satisfaction a bit. This lizard was getting entirely too annoying. Perhaps it'll like a bit of what drunkards at the Tankard got. She glares at the lizard, imbuing her gaze with a bit of magical power.

Jali takes a 5' step west into the doorway, cackles to extend Misfortune, and uses Evil Eye hex (DC 14) to lower the lizard's AC by 2 (7 round duration, 1 if it saves).

The lizard should have had to make two attack rolls to hit Jali thanks to Misfortune.

Cause Fear duration: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Jali's AoO attack roll: 1d20 ⇒ 12 for 1d4 ⇒ 1 if hit.

d4s hate me.

Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Jali jumps as the shock rips through her body. "Ahh! Stupid lizard!" In reply to Marius, she says, "I'm okay. Let's see how it likes this!" Chuckling to herself, Jali lets loose one of her more powerful tricks.

Jali cackles to extend Misfortune and then casts Cause Fear (DC 15). She also takes a 5' step south.

Concentration check if the lizard hits with its AoO: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24.

I don't have anything RAW to support my concept of readying an action outside of combat, it just sounds like something I should be able to do (although the opening the door in this case clearly prevents it this time, regardless). Maybe this kind of idea is what a surprise round should be used for?

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Jali sighs when she sees the lizard. Another beast trying to kill and eat them, no doubt. Who would've thought this tower would be full of so many carnivores? Well, animals could be just as unlucky as people. The lizard looked similar to one she'd read about in a book...

Knowledge: Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Whatever she knows about the lizard, she'll tell the party. She will also use Misfortune (DC 14) on the lizard when she can see it.

Jali looks at her companions and says, "Well, it's not going to open by itself. I hope." She steps forward and opens the door, then quickly moves aside to let the others see in.

"Another overgrown animal hoping to make us its dinner, perhaps?" Jali says. She wipes a bit of sweat from her brow and smiles determinedly. "Not today." She stands to the left and behind Marius and prepares to make the next opponent she sees have an unlucky day.

Jali stands one square diagonally back and to the left from Marius and readies an action to use Misfortune Hex on the next hostile target she sees.

Jali tugs on the rope to ensure it's well secured, then takes a deep breath and hauls herself up.

Climb check: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20
Apparently, I should have just climbed the wall without the rope.

Jali replies to Anadyr, "If you refuse to believe your own eyes, then I fear you have taken your sister's lessons a little too far. Pity." She finishes knotting the rope and hands it to Gregolyn.

"Working at the Tankard and reading didn't prepare me for climbing a crumbling tower, so I'll let one of you go first." Jali turns to Anadyr and says with a wry smile, "No rope? Whatever shall we do? Too bad this long, braided piece of silk I'm currently tying knots into will not function as one."

In case that line didn't come out right, she's simply needling Anadyr, not upset or anything.

"Sometimes I'd rather not be right. I'm not looking forward to climbing the tower anymore than you are." Jali grimaces as she walks outside and pulls out the silk rope. She clumsily ties knots in it at periodic lengths, hoping to make the climb easier. Now if she just knew a way to get the rope UP there.

"Well, I guess we're not going that way." Jali smirks wryly and relaxes for a moment. "I have a length of rope. Shall we try climbing through one of the openings higher up the tower?"

Anadyr, did you cast Light on the stone, or were you waiting for later?

Jali enters the room after Anadyr and looks around. More rubble, as one would expect from a collapsing tower. At least this time, it doesn't look like something will attack. Still, best to be sure. She looks over the room carefully, looking for any sign of a potentially hostile creature.

Perception check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Jali sighs at the sight of the desiccated corpse, remembering a street urchin that used to play near the Dragon's Tankard. Rose was her name, and she'd had a small dog that tagged along with her everywhere. There hadn't been much joy in Rose's life other than that dog. Kita's owner was probably morose over the loss.

When Anadyr asks her to carry the stone, she gravely accepts and tries not to flush, remembering her earlier rash actions. "Of course. I'll keep it in my backpack so the light won't give us away."

Turning to Marius, Jali says, "I agree, let's continue. I thought adventuring would be fun, not like this." She waves around at the webs, the darkness, and the dead spider. "If we're to make this worthwhile, we'll need to find something valuable we won't feel guilty over claiming as our own. Only way to do that is forward."

Jali shudders to think what they'll find in the cocoon. A spider of such size could have very large prey, as Gregolyn could attest. What manner of skeletal remains would they find within? Privately, she doubts there will be anything of value within. But she keeps her reservations to herself and peers in with the rest of her companions.

Jali takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, trying to calm her frayed nerves. Adventuring was turning out to be much harder than the stories made it sound. She studies the webs for a moment, then tries to cut through them with her punching dagger. The horizontal grip makes it awkward, however.

"Are you okay, Gregolyn?" she asks.

Misfortune is not a mind-affecting effect. Evil Eye, however, is.

Jali lets out a strained chuckle, trying, without much success, to clamp down on her fear. Gregolyn had been a frequent visitor to the Dragon's Tankard, and also one of the few customers that didn't attempt to force his attention on her, and the last thing she wanted was to see him eaten by a gods-be-damned overgrown spider.

Recognizing the webs as flammable, Jali considers using one of her flasks of alchemist's fire, but curses, knowing that it would put Gregolyn in too much danger. Instead, she pulls out her dagger, hoping to help cut Gregolyn free. "Hang on, Gregolyn, we'll get you out of there!"

Cackle as a move action to extend Misfortune. Draw punching dagger as another move action.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Jali jumps in surprise as the webs shoot out and cover Gregolyn. "I knew they looked fresh!" she says, scanning the webs for the spider. When she sees it, she tries to recall anything she knows about it, and shouts any pertinent information to the group before throwing her unlucky trick at the spider.

Knowledge: Nature check on the spider: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19. Anything she learns she yells to everybody, then she throws Misfortune Hex (DC 14) on the spider.

Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3

Jali grimaces at the dust and cobwebs that fill the room. She'd been the only one at the Dragon's Tankard who seemed to care about cleanliness, and fought the war against dust and cobwebs alone, a losing battle. Of course, she couldn't expect an abandoned tower to be clean.

"I don't like the look of these cobwebs. Seems far too many and too large for a normal spider, or even a colony of them."

She takes a closer look at the nearest cobwebs, wondering just how recently they'd been used, and what type of spider might have made them. Her years of reading any old book she could find gave her a decent working knowledge of animals. Perhaps it would come in handy here.

Knowledge: Nature check to identify the cobwebs and see how recently they'd been used: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Whatever information she comes up with she'll relay to the group.

Jali shudders as the last of the dogs falls. She hadn't been prepared for the jolt of fear that ran through her when she was confronted with being prey. Still, she held her own, and was proud of herself for that. She picks her way through the rubble and joins the others at the entrance to the tower.

"It seems I owe you an apology, Anadyr," Jali says. "Caution would seem to be prudent. As for an order, it seems like a good idea. I would prefer a position where I won't hinder your movement."

Jali mumbles to herself, "That's enough of taking the lead for me. One of these others can paint a target on himself." She laughs at the thought, and throws a scathing glare at the dog Gregolyn injured. Hopefully, it would be too intimidated to come after her in favor of closer prey.

Jali will use her Cackle hex to extend the Misfortune on dog #5, and throw Evil Eye (DC 14, -2 AC, 7 rounds, save reduces to 1 round) on dog #4.

Is there some reason Jali didn't get her 30' movement south?

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Jali fingers her only weapon, the punching dagger she always kept on her in case an amorous patron became too pushy, but she winces inwardly at the thought of stabbing a dog. Instead, she mumbles a few words and throws her unlucky trick at the nearest dog, then scrambles backwards through the rubble to give her more martial-oriented friends a clear view of the dogs.

Jali uses Misfortune Hex (DC 14) on whichever dog is closest (dog #3 if she acts before them) and moves south as far as her movement will take her (not sure how much of the map is difficult terrain. She has 30' movement).

Perception check - 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7

If she doesn't hear anything:

"Wolves, maybe?" Jali whispers back to Gregolyn. "Not what I had in mind as my first adventure, but I'll not back down." She follows Gregolyn back to Marius and takes a deep breath, mentally reassuring herself that her "tricks" (her name for her hexes) would work on animals.

"By all means, Anadyr, let us have a light." Jali covers her twinge of embarrassment, determined to prove her mettle.

Jali shivers and pulls her cloak closer around her shoulders. A cold, wet morning was not what she expected from adventuring, nor did she count on the shiver of fear that ran down her spine at the sight of the ruined tower. Still, best to put on a brave face for the others - wouldn't want them to think she was a weak maiden unable to fend for herself. She'd seen the results of men thinking like that back at the Dragon's Tankard, and she wanted no more of it, thank you very much.

"A bit over-cautious, Anadyr?" Jali lets out a forced chuckle. "It's an abandoned tower. I'll go take a look." She walks up to the opening and peers inside.

Checking in.

This is my witch character. I've emailed you the Hero Lab portfolio, also.
