Natloz here, this is the framework I'm working off of for an arcanist. I found a archtype Harrowed Society Student made specifically to be in Varisia as they are from the Twilight Academy. Some modifications would be have to be made for that. He could also be built to know all the languages to have some redundancy with Trudeau. He's lvl 4 at the moment so I'll have to reduce the level. The background would be my preferred theme for an arcanist. The drive to discover new magic and rip it apart to see how it works sounds like a fun concept.

Ishmex comes to a grim realization. This dragon is not his friend! This isn't going anything how I hoped! That dragon is more beast than civilized creature like the stories told. We've got to get out of here! Deciding to lead he calls out to his friends, "Mmph mmgh mrmrmm!" Damned gag... Ishmex uses his small size to his advantage and dances between the legs of the bigger folk into the crack. acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

"Well you don't have to be so mean about it..." Ishmex mumbles under his breath. He holds his hands out to show he isn't fighting until they come to gag him. "GET OFF, STOP THA... mmph mrph!" Finally resigned to his fate he glares at the warriors.

I'm the strongest mage in the world! I saw the dragon get held up in my webs. Ishmex holds his hands out to the sides and gives a twirl to show that he has no weapons. He takes tentative steps towards the dragon not even noticing he's getting his feet wet. His eyes as wide as saucers and wringing his hands in excitement he ignores anything else the man has to say from on top of Ishmex's new friend. draconic: "Do you not know your own language? I had to study many tomes in order to piece together a working vocabulary. Is this man mean to you? Do you want my friends and I to whop him on the head?"

Meh, I've got magic missile (offense) and web (control). If I had comprehend languages instead of snowball I'd be set. I will be working on getting a replacement spell book asap as one of my chosen class features requires it. Besides my normal spell casting I mean. That does raise an important question. If I don't have a spell book to study after we rest, do i then A) not have any spells prepaired and can't cast? B)Still have the spells I had prepaired before but can't refresh slots? C) Keep spells prepped and refresh spell slots. D) none of the above? C is best case I believe. See discussion here for different opinions.

Seeing his allies getting downed is quite worrisome but everything else seems to fade away at the sight of the dragon. ohmygodsohmygodsohmygods! It does exist! "Perhaps continuing the fight isn't the best idea?" Adressing the dragon,

Ishmex starts running behind his party to be able to see the cave mouth. He has a moment of insight to move further away in case something more dangerous comes out the cave. The is a flash as he chops his hand through the air creating a crack that he steps through into nothing then reappearing on the other side of the small stream. He digs in his pouch and produces a small ball of spiderweb. He chants arcane words to focus his power into the ball and throws it past the warriors where it explodes in a mess of thick sticky strands of magical webbing. Use dimensional slide to move to X-14 and use a point from reservoir cast a boosted web centered at Y/Z-4/5. DC 16 reflex. This should block the mouth of the cave and 10 ft back. Ishmex keeps his position behind the hut until talk of the dragon surfaces. He rushed over to Blythe, his eyes wide with excitement. "You actually saw it!? How big was it? Did it breath ice at you? Did it talk? I think I need to see this for myself! They were in the cave you said? " The questions spill out of his mouth so fast you can barely tell where one stops a and the next one begins. By the time you realize his intentions he's already taken a few steps towards ththe cave mouth. I'm assuming someone will stop me before I get too far. So I'll be next to Blythe in X-7

Ishmex watches as the long lost crew members try to communicate with the natives. He's not used to not knowing a language so the situation is a bit uncomfortable for him. If I only had my spell book this wouldn't be a problem. he thinks to himself. Thinking along those lines, he looks around to see if there is anything that looks like it was looted from the wreckage lying around. Wasn't sure if we were out of initiative or not.

Lheorvine, be ready to run to back me up if this gets ugly." Ishmex waits for agreement before advancing towards the village guards. Now was not to time to go off on his own.
Assuming everyone agrees:

Aubrey, Grulorg, Lheorvine: Ishmex is about to cast another spell of detection when he spots the group coming down the beach. He finishes casting his spell and tries to find some cover amongst the debris that was washed up. That would be detect magic to see if my wand (or anything else) miraculously washed up on shore. Accounting for equipment, I only have my robe of twine, cloak of resistance, spell component pouch? I don't want to assume anything anymore even though I assumed I put on the robe and cloak as they were clothes.

During the worst of the storm, Ishmex keeps to his cabin so as to stay out of the crew's way. Once the storm is relatively done with he wanders about the the interior of the ship trying to find any broken timbers he might be able to fix. As he finds them he sits and begins casting over them. Delmar finds Ishmex with his bed roll wrapped around him keeping a careful eye on his items. Everything seems to be tied down or at least tied together with an excessive amount of rope and twine. "So far there's been no injuries. I almost threw up though! I wouldn't be surprised if that bird was some sort of magical omen. It was acting very strangely. I didn't want to cast any spells to examine it in case it would offend the crew or the sea gods." As he speaks, a wave causes a part of his mess to fly out of the backpack it was in. The first day Ishmex watches the crew and learns generally how they work on this ship. He stays mostly out of the way so as to not anger any of the crew. The second day you can see him eyeing the crows nest as he had never been in one before. He wanders over to the rigging and pulling on it but never quite gets the courage to climb up. He spots the seabirds behind the ship and decides on another course of action. Scrambling below decks he reappears a short while later with a small scrap of bread floating just in front of him with a larger chunk in his hands. Reaching the stern of the ship he wants to the others then wills the bread to float towards the birds. He plays a little game taunting the birds with bread till one catches it then floats out another piece from the bread in his hand till it is gone. He grins at Grulorg but leaves Blythe to her conversation. Floating the bread is done with mage hand

Ishmex chatters incessantly on the way to the ship about all kinds of things. Once there though he quiets down to observe details about the ship and it's crew. Thanking the first mate he starts getting his things in order in his cabin. The lurch of the ship leaving causes him to run back up to the deck to watch the departure from the harbor. "This is my favorite part." he says to no one in particular.

spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15 scroll making list four enlarge person - 8 hours 44gp (might be better as potions vs scrolls)

I understand, I want planning on making a library. At most I was thinking I could make 7, maybe a couple more if I dedicated all the time to scoll making. Lvl 1 scrolls cost me 11 gold to make at caster lvl 1. Lvl 2 scrolls are 95 gold at caster lvl 4. So all but one or two would be basic lvl 1 scrolls. I know you said that this is a fairly gritty setting so feel free to limit the supplies available. I was thinking I was going to buy extra ink and paper as well to make more once we leave if we need to.

Blythe, bing a defensive person you could use reduce person to get +1 ac and to-hit but do less damage. Grulog, I could make some false life scrolls for you to get some temp hp. I see enlarge person is on your spell-likes known but I can make a scroll or two to save slots. I forgot to make any obscuring mist and silent image scrolls pregame so that'll take up a couple days for me.

We can't just question him like one of our usual contractors." He looks at his comrades with pleading eyes. Ignoring his own advice he turns back to the lords, "Miss Merovingian does have a point though, that is quite the handsome fee to be bodyguards though I think her numbers may be off. As a side note Lord Elveden, do you think there's any dragon magic left in the islands?" Ishmex takes a sip of his drink to mark the end of his question. 3-6 months, 30 or 31 days a month. 44-88 gold a day. Still a lot of money to pay bodyguards.
