"Good one! But you need to do better than that." With a snarl, Heimoth slams his shield into the face of the closest bandit and then steps around the other one, preparing to charge the mage. I'm attacking Bandit 9 with Staggering smite: Attack roll 12+8=AC 20, damage 2d8+4=13. A hit pushes the bandit to AB 18, which is sadly on fire... I then use Lay on hands on myself before stepping to Z14. Sefra.

First, a free save: 10+1 (Human perseverance)=11. Huzzah! Finally mobile again, Heimoth jogs towards the enemies, taking care to avoid being surrounded. "You there," he barks at the closest one. "Come get some more of this!" With that, he flings his throwing axe at the miscreant before assuming a fighting stance, sword and shield held high. I can't reach them with a charge, so it's time for my first ranged attack! Move to Y15 before challenging Bandit 9 and then throwing the axe at him. Attack roll 13+6+1(bard)=AC 20, damage 1d6+3=8. Sefra.

I first attack Bandit 5 using Valiant strike; my effective STR is 18 as I have two opponent surrounding me. Attack roll 11+8+1(bard)+1(STR increase)=AC 21, damage 1d8+4+1(STR increase=11. I then use a minor action to lay ands on myself, healing 7 hit points. I then use my action point and make another attack, this time on Bandit 6. I hit him with Holy strike. Attack roll 9+8+1(bard)=AC 18, damage 1d8+6=12. Finally, my saving throw: 5... Still slow.

First, I mark Bandit 5. I then slowly shuffle to W11 before attacking him with Tide of iron. Attack roll 20!+8+1(song of courage)=AC29, confirm roll 9+8+1=AC 18. Damage 8+3+1d12=19. Tide of iron lets me move the target one square and then shift into his old position, so Bandit 5 is now in Y11 and I'm in X12. Finally, my saving throw: 4. I'm still slowed.

"Hasren's right." Heimoth gives his shoulders a self-effacing shrug. "The high and mighty in their stone castles don't let the people in the field in on their long-term plans. Myself, I always thought they would use the surveys to establish a trade route going south to Kyonin and maybe Galt. To do that, they would need some sort of compact with the Nomen, so it was a good thing you found us." Diplomacy Aid Another for Hasren 8+10+4=22.

Initial Insight check 11+10=21. Heimoth initially ignores the two prowling centaurs and concentrates on the spokesman, deciding to keep the tone friendly but serious. "Not everyone that speaks Elven dwells in the forest; my mother, for example, is something of a city elf. And as my friend Hasren here can testify to, human-elven relationships are far from uncommon. Just look at our group: two humans, two elves, and a pair of half-elves, traveling the lands of men and elves, and now, those of the centaurs." Second Insight check 12+10=22. History check 9+0=9. Thanks, INT 9... Uh oh. His good mood abruptly vanishes and is replaced by despair as Terra stomps all over his attempts at diplomacy. "Ah, amusing? Please do not be offended - I don't think any of us have ever seen a centaur before, much less four." Can I roll an extra Diplomacy check to calm the centaurs down again? If so, the result is 11+10+4=25.

"Good afternoon!" Heimoth puts on his friendliest face as he answers the centaur in Elven. "We certainly did not intend to cause any inconvenience or offence, and we are terribly sorry if we did so. We are hunting human bandits. You wouldn't perhaps have heard of a man who calls himself the Stag Lord?" Diplomacy 13+10+4(Astral speech daily power - it lasts for the encounter)=27.

"Don't make any slurping noises while we talk to the horse-men, willya? No need to catch any more trouble out here than we really need to." We pull a bit back towards the cliff, and then Hasren and I turn back towards the centaurs. Together we make a pretty formidable Diplomacy team - and we're tough enough to survive a couple of rounds on our own if things turn really sour...

One vote for exploring this side of the river. BTW, here is the map again. Are we now by Crooked Falls (location #30)?

The map's off a bit - after Hasren's Majestic word, I'm in W10. Seeing that the ogre is distracted by the swarm of insects, Heimoth cuts into its vulnerable legs. The ogre is already marked, so I'm attacking with Holy strike. Attack roll 11+8+2(flank/combat advantage)=AC 21, damage 1d8+6=13. If the ogre's still standing, I'll use my action point and attack it again: 10+8+2=AC 20, damage 12. If it falls, I then move to S8; if not, I stay put. Sefra

W10 looks good; also, I'll take that healing surge. I've updated my damage total.

"Hey! Come pick on somebody your own size, you... um, jerk! Come here and face me like a real man, you big dummy!" Single action only, so I'll use my challenge power on the big lug. He takes a -2 penalty to attack anyone but me, as well as some damage if he targets anyone else.
