PRD?

Sorry, I'm still rather new to Pathfinder. I've been in a few games now, but for the most part I pretty much stay out of it for the time being. The only two books I have are the core book and the Advanced Player's Guide.

I love books, too. I just don't happen on average to be able to afford Pathfinder books most of the time. And honestly, PDF is annoying to me. I don't like dealing with it, not in other people's books and not as galleys for my own.

I have a chance to buy a copy of the Beastiary 1. Should I get it? Is it worth it? Basically, will it help me with the druids I normally love to play, and with Hailey's fascination with the undead?

Alice studies the minion, safe from the perch of Hailey's shoulders. She knows that Hailey controls the thing, but it is still a canine, sort of.

"In which case, Alice and I are going to wait just outside of this room, and so is my minion. I suggest all of us but one go to the other side of the room, and on that one who remains to deal with the door, I can cast one protection spell on them if they want me to. Or, if you know any fire cantrips, Draalûsh, you could keep using them on the door's weak spot. It would take time, but it would eventually open the door without danger as cantrips are not exhausted as other spells are."

"I'm sorry, but I cannot. So if you'd like, you may smash it. And I'd like a minute too before you open that door. Thank you, little minion. Now please be a dear and stand guard over me to forestall any attacks on me."

First, she'll raid the shelf of its vials, bottles, flasks, boxes, scrolls, tomes, and notebooks. This is Hailey in a candy store.

"I'd also like a chance to read these notebooks and find out exactly what this person was up to before we open that door. Not to mention these scrolls. Scrolls can be incredibly useful one-shot weapons, used correctly. I'd like to know what these scrolls are, not to mention what, exactly, we're dealing with here, before we proceed. Wisdom before battle."

Then she will use Detect Magic in the room.

"All right, my little friend, lead the way. Where will I find the person who formerly commanded you before me? By this, I mean, take me to who is in charge of this place, please, and I expect you to protect me should I fall under attack along the way," she says to her minion.

Hailey recoiled during the casting, finding the power both pleasurable and distasteful at the same time.

"I have two scrolls of the spell left. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't have even considered doing such a thing to myself. It feels too . . . odd. But it simply will not do to enter combat with half my health gone."

"One thing I should do before we proceed. Anyone else want tended while I'm at it?"

She removes one of her scrolls of "Cure Lt." Then she makes use of it on herself.

Cure Lt. Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

"Shall I tell my little minion to find the master of the cave?"

Hailey cackles with delight at finally doing what she has always wanted to do, always believed she could do. Let's face it, like Sheldon Cooper, she's one lab accident away from being a supervillain.

Anyway, she laughs gleefully, and when she finally stops, she looks at the men of the party.

"Well, boys, what shall I tell my little minion to do? Lead us to his dark ex-master, or to some goodies, perhaps? What's your pleasure, boys? First, a test of my power. Dance, little minion. Just for thirty seconds."

Then she acts like a puppet master pulling a string.

Hailey becomes completely angered by the resistance, and tries once more to hex a creature into her service. She has one left, I think.

Hailey will finally use her hex, using her power as a wizard (necromancer class feature) to channel the energy needed to try and gain control over the nearest skeletal wolf, but any skeletal wolf in the 30 foot radius will do.

Finally using her Command Undead power. DC 13 to resist her hex.

Though a bit risky, Hailey actually feels the need to be close to the battle, so she will move to Flandrion's side, unless someone can think of a better place for her. That is, she will move after she gains control of a wolf. Until then she's staying in place because 30 feet is as far as she dares go.

"It is important that you boys understand that if I do manage to get a wolf under my power, that you do not do that wolf any harm. You'll break my hex and it'll turn against us."

I read it again at home in the core rulebook. She can only control one undead per cleric level. So, unless these things have a challenge rating of less than 1, one is all she can command at this time. I'd thought it said charisma modifier. So sorry.

And she doesn't need to reassign a channel divinity because she has the option to control undead up to five times as a wizard. More if her intelligence modifier goes up.

"Finally, I get to practice what I literally preach, and hex someone, sort of," she coos.

She reassigns a hex to channel the energy needed to use Command Undead, as soon as she gets to within 30 feet of them. This should seize control of two of them (assuming they don't make their saves) if I understand it all correctly.

"Remember, boys, I can control up to two undead things. When you want me to, just ask," Hailey whispers to whomever is nearest.

Hailey snaps her fingers in contempt for the situation, but this emotion is not shared by Alice, who purrs and rubs Hailey's neck. Alice was not interested in hunting a huge predator.

Hailey will follow the others, making sure to keep Alice on her shoulders. Alice will, when it suits her, sniff the air and watch for things, but she won't leave Hailey's shoulder.

"I'm only guessing here, but I'm increasingly thinking werewolf," Hailey remarks. "Much as I'd love to just plain confront the cabal of necromancers up north, those abusers of the sacred art, we're not ready. I propose that we follow this thing. It's the only way to be sure. And to build up our strength."

"Then I'll teach you all gnomish."

But then she realizes that she can't say mean and nasty things about people if she has to heal them if she does that, and sighs. She'll be reduced to merely thinking Oh Lord Nethys, lend me the power to aid this careless little fool, or I pray for healing for this nitwit who went looking for trouble and certainly found it, or Nethys please forgive and bless this person who clearly doesn't know the definition of 'leave it alone' . . .

"We should probably search for a trail of some kind. With so much blood lost there's bound to be some, or else footprints. We can't let this mystery go unresolved. I just have to see what we're dealing with . . . and protect the innocent citizens."

She gets a forlorn frown on her face.

"Yes, that's it. We have to keep the public safe."

She looks at the party, wondering if they believe her that she cares about these muggles.

"Sorry, boys, but we're looking at separate people. But the fact of separate symbols leaves us with two options. First is: Could we be dealing with a splinter sect. Second is: Do these all belong to the same cult and simply represent regional markers?"

Then a look that seems a mix of joy and horror crosses her face.

"Or differing species?"

Hailey studies the originals together, (not her own copies on the ground), wondering if the same hand made both or if it's two separate people. In short, hand-drawing analysis.

"Regarding the man, no doubt he was chosen. But chosen for what? Perhaps parts of his body.
"About the symbol, could have all sorts of meanings. My immediate guess is either he's stepping up his game or else there are differing clans."

Hailey curiously draws the original symbol we saw before on the ground, then draws the second symbol close to it, and watches.

If nothing happens, she will go ahead and use Detect Magic anyway.

Hailey will approach the corpses, and investigate them, examining them thoroughly.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Heal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Knowledge: Nature: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Knowledge: Religion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

"Whomever you saw last night found easier prey here," Hailey replies. "Exactly what did you boys see?"

Forgot a skill roll. Just in case.

Hailey then looks at Garrek.

"I'd like to learn orcish. You probably should too, Flandrion and Swift-Palm. That way we can use it like a code language so information can be passed freely amongst ourselves with little chance of outside interception.
"Besides, I hate being left out of things. We've already seen how useful language arts can be."

"Very well," Hailey replied, disappointed in losing her chance to hex someone. "When I wake up from my sleep, I'll prepare Comprehend Languages, Bane, Doom, Ray of Enfeeblement, Shield, and Protection from Evil. If I'm going to curse an enemy's aptitude for combat, I may as well go all out."
