At Level 2, with max starting gold equipment, 3 traits, and 20 point build.

Again, I can convert from Ulfen to Nirmathi if desired, but it will affect trait selection and starting equipment both. Neither is a significant problem, just means it will take me more than 3 minutes to accomplish. <grin>

Edit: Check, will adapt to WBL. Shouldn't take long, so I won't post about completing it.

This is hustonj's original Ranger build for the AP. Have to cut some levels and gear back and add a trait.

Last time I got him into a group in the AP, he was joining them on the other side, so the bit in his background about going exploring across the world, and working his way down to where the story starts got dropped.

And I mis-membered which Archetype he has. Looks like Nirmathi Irregular. Always trying to keep the cards on the table. Open and honest is the only way to enter one of these recruitments.

Again, I could completely rebuild him with a different archetype (or rebuild his story for Nirmathas, I guess, just thought of that, but that will have ripple effects through the build, too) or maybe build a shifter.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Skald "I can't speak for the rest, and will go with them instead if they wish, but I, for one, am grateful for the offer. A night indoors, close with body heat, will be a nice change."

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

"He'll scare an awful lot of people. Sometimes that's good. Won't know if it is a good choice or a bad one until we see the price." Grim shrugs.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Skald "We're just glad you're alive, and able to return home. We'll be happy to help you get back"

Not knowing the language of the giants, Grim just watches as the Troll Tries to talk to Irina.

I don't see cause to take from them.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Meh. The absent players bothers me more than skipping the fight. The story is the thing. Always. Everybody in this game is supposed to be working together to tell a story that could be very similar to others, but that will be uniquely ours.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

With the others heeding his warning, Grimgisli pulls back out of the troll's reach (but just, because you stopped too close, Irina - full attack series can still happen) before letting another shaft fly at the fungus passenger.

MW Composite Strength (+1) Longbow @ fungus w/ PBS, Bless: 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 1 + 1 = 28
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4

I'll take the 9 damage to the mold, every round, without complaint.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Oh, I full well expect another AoO. The question is whether I can create enough movement that it is followed by a single attack or another full round series. I am very aware the debuffs are probably the only reason Grim can consider another series. He's not. I am.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

"Fall back, both of you! Move away from the troll!" Grimgisli hesitates, not wanting to be responsible for another's death, but knowing he needs to get further away himself if he truly hopes to survive.

Gotta see if Irina and Adrian stay in the creature's reach or not. If they do, I'll have to stay and try to draw the attacks. If they pull back, then I can pull back as well, and hopefully survive at least one round longer. Yes, if it comes down to it, Grim will stand there and fire. Like I said in the last post: This is gonna hurt!

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

I meant reaching out to those we haven't heard from in a while.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Not sure if we've lost people to the storms, or just lost them.

Start by reaching out?

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Grim steps away from the troll, knowing it won't make much difference, and changes fire to the fungus on the troll's back. Hopefully it stays hurt when damaged.

MW Composite Strength (+1) Longbow Rapid-Shot 1 @ fungus w/ PBS, Bless: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 + 1 = 27
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 1 = 10

MW Composite Strength (+1) Longbow Rapid-Shot 2 @ fungus w/ PBS, Bless: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 + 1 = 17
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 = 5

This is gonna hurt me . . ..

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Happens.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Honestly, the player's been waiting, hoping for some communication. <shrug>

Knowledge (nature) - Does Grim know anything out about the rider: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 Okay, that's a no.

Not seeing any glaring options for changing tactics right now, Grim continues pumping shafts at the troll.

Rapid-Fire Bow 1 w/ PBS: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 1 = 28
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8
Concealment for shooting through illusion: 1d100 ⇒ 30

Rapid-Fire Bow 2 w/ PBS: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 1 = 14
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6
Concealment for shooting through illusion: 1d100 ⇒ 99

Depending, that's probably either one good shot, or a double miss.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Not aware of the information the player is reading, Grimgisli steps forward to clear the cavern corner from his line of fire and lets two shafts fly at the troll, trying to ease Adrian's situation as much as he can, without getting that close himself!

Rapid-Fire Bow 1 w/ PBS: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 1 = 27
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7

Rapid-Fire Bow 2 w/ PBS: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 = 26
Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4

I'm going to guess both of those are good enough even adjusting for soft cover provided by Adrian.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 +2 if counting as Cold Terrain

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Sounds like we need to take stock of what's making the noise behind us! Grimgisli will give a look. How could he not?

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Check. Thank you.

Finally got back in. I had to reset my password, too. One step further than most, from what I'm hearing.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Profit. It has to with the fact PFSRD20 sells ad space and profits from whet they have posted. If Nethys always used the copyright protected material, well, it wasn't legal, but was probably tolerated because the site had no revenue generation, keeping it firmly in fan space.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Well, 7.5 years ago, when Grim was created, Nethys was just another fan site. <shrug> Don't think they could use non-SRD references back then, either.

Nope. Grim is not connected to Nirmathas. Using PFSRD20 as the reference when I built him, I didn't see any such non-SRD reference.

I did make the connection a while back. Year or so. But I figure he was made in good faith. If a GM wants him changed, I'll deal with it. Otherwise, I like the build.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Before we get too close, Grim shares. "As I said, a predator is likely to watch the approach. Thing is, Moss Trolls easily move through the trees, and frequently drop on their prey from above. It is typical for such a hunter to pick off those in the back, hoping to keep the herd from noticing the beast's success as long as possible. We'll want to put somebody harder to kill in the back, just in case."

As they approach the cave, Grim just shakes his head. "Feels like bait. Don't let the cave distract you. Seek it!" The young human follows his own advice.

Perception + Cold Terrain + Forest?: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 + 2 = 21 If this doesn't count as forest, subtract that 2.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Meh? There's some entertainment to be had from it, unless you channel your inner teenage knee-jerk too well, in which case it will just get annoyingly frustrating.

I don't know how you intend to write it, though, so . . ..

It does not. But the nonlethal or lethal damage from cold is reduced by the resistance, down to none.
So, Technically no, Effectively yes. Nice...

It is resistance 2 against a d6 roll. Not sure how effective that will prove long-term.

Grim can easily expect to make the early rolls, but around hour 16 (check 15) he'll need a 14 on the die, without magic. He's gonna fail a couple of those rolls a day, without a doubt. More the way the dicebot normally treats me!

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Grim's pretty confident about his ability to handle the cold without magic, as long as he has a solid campfire/shelter over night. But Magic can always be your friend!

Don't know if anyone needs/wants me to prep a SECOND instance daily. You'll have to speak up in character about that.

Knowledge (local) about Moss Trolls: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Special Defenses. Special Abilities. Special Qualities. If I get that much info, in that order for questions if I don't.

He shakes his head. Skald "That should be enough for it to find us. Seems the obvious path into the area, so a predator should be watching for prey to come along. Don't know the area well enough to have confidence trying to flank in, though. We'll need to be ready."

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Scanning through the gear . . ..

Winter Clothing stacks with either furs or Survival, and is better than either by itself.

I don't think we need to be too afraid of the survival rolls, though. Seriously.

There is a MW survival kit. 50 GP and 5# for the +2 across a broader aspect of Survival. In my gear list, actually.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

The relatively short Ulfen man is in white and pale grey clothing and gear. There's no obvious sign of armor, but the nearby bow, quivers on his legs, and two small blades on his belt suggest he's not a stranger to combat.

Skald "Be healthy and happy! I am Grimgisli. Sylgja was just explaining her predicament. I believe she deserves to know the truth instead of cowering here in fear of it." The traditional greeting is delivered without any sign of mirth, and the tone of his statements about helping your hostess makes it even more obvious that he thinks you'll be looking for a corpse.

The above works whether we are inside or out. I will provide more if it turns out we are outside.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Brought the character in line.

Modified the background. Tried to accommodate Dear Grandmother's suggestions as cleanly as I could think of a way to do quickly.

I will accept recommendations against either of the above, of course.

/me waves.

I was invited to join, but was (reasonably) told I should adjust my backstory. Might take me a few days to get that part done. I need to do some research before I can build something both consistent with the story and that makes sense to me.

For the record, I don't care about PFS credit, but I certainly don't mind supporting anyone who does.

Grimgisli is, well, quite grim. A dedicated archery ranger, with bonuses while in the Forest, Cold favored terrain, and HUMAN favored enemy.

As suggested, I will adapt the story so he never went South, and may well build a connection to Nadya, because that will explain and simplify MANY things.

Take your time adding us. Do it when and where it makes sense.

And thank you for having me.

Edit: Need to double-check build rules, too!

Double-Edit. Level to 4, gear to Level 3 WBL, and adding Baba-Yaga's Boon seem to be the mechanical changes necessary. I'm supposed to make cookies tonight to repay a neighbor repairing a broken piece of wooden furniture for my wife, though. Shouldn't take long for those mechanical bits, though, once I can start them.

/me waves.

Still here. Trying to be good. Trying.

Playing an AP for PFS credit doesn't require the group follow ANY PFS rules during play, interestingly enough.

The intent of PFS credit for APs was to increase sales by getting dedicated Organized Play players to purchase and use the APs. Follow the money, right?

The group is supposed to play the AP, or at least the bits covered by the chronicle, as a group, hopefully purchasing and experiencing the entire story.

Using PFS creation rules just made it easy on the original GM. Don't read that as being intended as insulting, because it isn't. No real decisions to make about what was allowed or not, so it eliminates one of the frequent early conflicts in getting a group started. And, yes, generally APs depend on the players taking one of the Campaign Traits. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes it only really matters for getting the group together.

This character was built for RoW, and got NEARLY to 4th before, well, he didn't.

He is another human, though. And another Ranger, so, I get why that may not meet the desire.

Tabs in the profile include Background, Goals, Fears, Ally, Enemy, and Acquaintance. Interestingly enough, only the enemy is likely to be relevant in the near term.

As per the statement that you are more interested in characters than builds, I won't adapt the mechanics unless selected or requested as part of a decision process. You can already see the character, I hope.

I am in several very slow games already. Slow isn't dead. I'm good with slow.

Male Ulfen Human Ranger (Woodland Skirmisher) 2; HP24/24; AC17 T14 F13 CMD17; F+4 R+7 W+2; Perception+8+

Hey.

First, I owe everyone apologies for vanishing without a word. I've come back to try to apologize for doing so, and to let you know that I have no idea when I'll be able to meaningfully return.

That's as far s anyone needs to read. If you're curious, you are free to keep going, though.

Why did I vanish? My wife had started an evaluation of her knees, scheduled to run for about 2 months. First appointment was on a Monday. Late that same Thursday we were told the evaluation was over and they were going to schedule her for a full knee replacement in her worse leg. We found out that next Monday that surgery was that Thursday, a week after we were told she would be having surgery.

I took some sick leave to help her through the surgery and earliest recovery stages. I've been working half days, taking sick leave for the rest, for the past couple of weeks, trying to keep her from doing too much with the live-in grand kids and doing her exercises, with only partial luck.

She's doing her exercises while I type, and the grand kids are down for their naps. Today is going to be the last day I PLAN to do the half-day thing. Thing is, even having been home so much more than normal, I've been going non-stop. We were two weeks past her surgery before I even got into the office where my computer sits, and we're over three weeks past it now and I've had to steal the time to let people know what's going on.

I don't know how long it will be before I can reasonably expect the leisure time to properly contribute to these games again. I am sorry for vanishing, but I have to focus on my wife's actual needs before I play.

Game specific:

This game is one I think I'm hurting the most. Grim's become a focal point. But I have to admit my limits and work within them. I can't find the time to keep up with my games right now. I truly am sorry, guys.

"I thought she said we would have to use one to go deeper into the tower. But let us see what we can see."

In Skald:
"Too much time spent on backs. If we don't get better together, one of these is going to end us. I hope we secure the Southerners' homes, first."

Really doesn't matter to me where it goes, but I had to make some sort of IC comment!

"EVERY fight could go either way. If you don't believe that before it starts, you'll get dead. This group worked together well that time. We may be starting to figure out how to support each other instead of fight as individuals. That will make winning easier."

Back to just shaking his head, the hunter gives a quick scan of the room before moving to help with finding valuables. As he starts that effort, though, he does speak up again.

"Hjorleaf is right, of course, we can't hole up anywhere at this point, we need to get through this tower as quickly as possible. Mistress is out, but will be coming home. You think that last fight was tough? Wait for her."

Looking at the blood on the clothing of the group, he looks to Porablum. "Little one? You may have to drain that new stick to keep us combat ready, but that's where we need to be. Even the dress-wearer, whether he thinks he wants the help or not. Him soaking up attacks was useful in this fight."

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 Indoors and searching a space/bodies, so no terrain or foe benefits claimed.

After the attempt to claim anything useful, Grimgisli will go about the process of retrieving the arrows that he can.

The generic post to share before attempting to recovery post:

So, I got the flu. Not really over it, yet, but past the worst of it.

I went to get tested to verify it was flu, and the care providers went down the "better safe than sorry hole" a might to far, in my opinion.

Standard questions, designed to check for other, deeper concerns/problems, right? "Do you have any tightness in your chest?" "I've been coughing for about three days at this point, yes, I have a tightness in my chest!" So, they stopped everything about verifying the flu in order to check for a heart attack. Thing is, my fever had just started to break, and I was not only DRENCHED in sweat, but I was still actively sweating that hard. They couldn't get a good EKG read because the contact stickers wouldn't. Stick, I mean.

They called an ambulance and transferred me to an ER, to make sure I wasn't having a heart attack. The ER team was focused on EXACTLY one thing, for obvious reasons. First thing they did different? They took that super medical tape and taped the sensors down. EKG told them almost immediately that there was no heart attack going on. I was still in that ER for nearly 15 hours . . ..

IV fluids. Roughly 2.4 liters of fluid pushed into my system. Breathing treatment. Seems when I arrived in the ER, my O2 saturation was around 82. They started to admit me in order to watch my O2 saturation levels, but after I sat in their ER for that long without any further dips, they accepted it might not still be required and discharged me instead of continuing to wait for a room. Having an asthmatic wife means we have a nebulizer at home, and that helped sell the release, too. Still spending more time asleep than awake, for now.

Missed a couple of Santa gigs the family had lined up. Went to a photoshoot with a family yesterday. I was there for about 10 minutes, just needing to sit and smile, but I stumbled into the house when I got home, completely exhausted. I'm supposed to go get caught in a neighbor's house tonight. Very worried about going. Just as worried about denying their kids.

Decisions, decisions. Hjorleaf can handle the atomie, I think. Besides, I have a nearly clean line of fire based on the map . . ..

The chaos of combat always keeps things interesting, but Grim can't pass up the chance he sees before him right now . . .. He turns and looses a pair of arrows at the new combatant, while he can still see her.

Full Attack - Rapid Shot
Longbow w/ PBS, Rapid, and Human Favored Enemy: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 1 - 2 + 2 = 15

Piercing w/ PBS & Favored Enemy: 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 = 6

All rolls 2 less if the combatant is not human. I can ignore soft cover provided by one person, but not the door frames, assess such penalties as you should, please.

Well, those dice rolls weren't inspiring, were they? Only 1 of 4 over half of the die, and it JUST . . ..

Hey. Real life.

I live in a 3 generation home.

This last weekend, both of the youngest generation (one is 2 the other just had her first birthday) got sick. So did their mom. Monday so did their dad. Somewhere in there, grandma got sick, too. Now I'm sick. At least the youngest seems to be over it.

If you need to bot me to keep things moving, please do.

I'm sorry, but I'm not even managing to focus to play spades on my phone right now, and that's amazingly brainless.

With neither of his targets visible, Grimgisli starts moving to create a line of sight so that he can engage one of them. He steps off of the table and walks across the room, struggling to move, though, and doesn't manage the speed he thinks he should . . ..

Slowed, right? That's how I treated it last round, and how I treated it with this single action move.

As he feels a mist falling across his body, slowing his ability to act, Grim frowns deeply. He doesn't let that stop him from trying to put another arrow through his attacker, however.

Longbow w/ PBS @ Yellow Atomie: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 1 = 16
Cold Iron Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8

I needed like a 10, too, right? Got an 8. <sigh>

Shifting away from the gnat, so that he can target it more easily, the hunter demonstrates that you don't always want to draw his attention away from his prey.

Longbow W/ PBS & Rapid: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 1 - 2 = 8
Cold Iron Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8

Longbow W/ PBS & Rapid: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 1 - 2 = 20

Never took it personally.

Was concerned that you might be from the quick post. Glad that isn't the case.

With the crowd forming between him and the target, Grim decides to move to higher ground and climbs up on top of the table before loosing another round.

Bow w/ PBS: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 = 27 Even with elevation, there's gotta be a soft cover bonus being provided by more than one person, so I can't ignore it.
I am restricted to ignoring bonus if provided by exactly one person. But with that shot, do not think it will matter.

Cold Iron Piercing w/ PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7

Recognizing that his number of useful shots is going to be more limited as the others close with her, Grim starts looking for her small friends . . ..

No action to use to do so, but, hey.

Now I'm at a keyboard with some time . . ..

Once we came through the gate, our hosts who protected us expressed their concern that this individual would see to their destruction if she thought they were tangentially related to anything opposing her boss. Well, we made them tangentially related to direct opposition, didn't we? Have we no obligation to try to protect them from harm they predicted she would cause, and that seems well within her capability to make happen?

The entire expedition is about protecting the Southern lands from an assault being made, apparently by her boss. Letting us shut the gate, while keeping the ability to identify to her boss exactly who was involved and what sort of capabilities we have displayed, isn't exactly in our best personal survival interests.

I was hoping to get something that would give me a reason not to attack. I didn't. I saw empty promises of short-term non-interference, which provided no reason to expect her to avoid causing long-term complications and threats to our lives. I saw magical servants with the ability to counter nearly anything we could have done to secure her, either directly or simply through acquiring help. Had we locked her in a closet, she would not have been there when we got back. She had no reason to stay, and more resources to help her get out than we brought with us in total.

You have chosen a thought pattern that starts with trusting someone clearly labelled as our enemy.

I have chosen a thought pattern that starts with expecting our enemies to work as hard to defeat us as we work to defeat them, when we actively choose to work together.

The starting assumptions and logical conclusions stemming from these two patterns don't share much in the way of common ground. Thus my comment that actual discussion will probably prove futile. The best we can hope for is some indication that we both acknowledge the other has thought this through logically, but that we disagree about what is right and why.

That used to be a fairly common thing, but these days it has gotten more and more rare, as people teach themselves and each other to think that only their assumptions can be correct, that only their experiences can be relevant, that anyone with contradictory views must have something inherently wrong with them. But, that's just an old man ranting.

One position requires trusting someone you know is a servant of your enemy.

The other assumes that your enemy's servant will be a faithful and true servant against your interests.

The contradictory assumptions make discussion futile.
