Yes and it opened new story lines. It was weird how it was done. Too long to explain

I wanted to provide feedback on this pc/consol game as a long time Paizo and Pathfinder lover. I have been playing it now for the past three weeks. I do love how you can really create the character and class you love. And I love that is sticks pretty close to the AP and to the feel of it. I love the npcs and the different side quests to help them. I also have enjoyed seeing how kingdom building is in a electronic setting. It will help me to better GM and possibly play the path.

That said, I have a few critiques that I have left Owlcat and I wanted to share them here. Please understand, I am not trying to belittle the amazing work done by both teams on this. I just want to share some of the frustrations in trying this and then leaving a bit sullen. And, what it may share with potential PC and Console gamers that could be converted to loving TTRPGS.

I am disappointed in the quest time limits and being forced to follow it closely instead of having freedom to play and enjoy the setting. Unless you just follow the main story, you lose your kingdom no matter how well you build it. I think this is not a good thing and puts on pressure that you don't find in many other RPG games for the PC. And, it takes away all of the good work you are doing. Most of us gamers and RPGers who play it are NOT used to KINGDOM BUILDING.
I do like kingdom building and being faced with tough choices. And I love the variety of responses you can choose to get different outcomes. However, to then put the added pressure of "choose the right decisions on the side running of the kingdom" and then "oh by the way, you have a main quest with a time limit that will destroy everything you build" is more RAILROADING than open world play.
Please, please, please, Owlcat Games and Paizo, please learn from this and allow for the open fun that is the Table Top RPGs. Also please embrace what you teach us as GMs and players that the players write the stories and should be allowed to follow more open courses to have an enriching experience of building their character's story. This game flies in the face of that in SO many ways.
The quests, structure of them, and the kingdom building are amazing. The time limit and you must follow the main quest or else you lose everything I HATE. And I do as a GM. It goes against everything we try to teach in a table top RPG and for some people who will learn to game and love those through this vehicle, you will fail them at that and teach them hack slash and stick to the main story or else you will fail. Not good. More open architecture, time limits and building. And more intuitive ways to let them make choices without losing.
This is just one Pathfinder Player and GM's opinion.

Sounds good. I would love it if your team would bring us more world info on Azlant Isles and Arcadia. These have been great teases at the end of 1e and into the first adventure path in 2e.

The Exchange

Adam and the adventure path team,

Will there be a second path into the Azlanti Ruined empire? Having a sequel would be fun and it would let more of the lost magic of the lost empire of man.

Also, are their plans on an Arcadia Adventure path (based across its continent) in the near future? I was seeing some of Luis's posts in what he is running on his on as his own work. I was hoping that would happen since there is such a teaser with the 1e Paths.

Woohoo....Thank you Mr. Jacobs.....by chance is there say a deadline in the next 2 years?

James, I know Luis has been working on some of the Arcadia modules (for his own end of things). Will we finally get some fleshed out maps for Arcadia since now it has been included in the Adventure Paths? Also, how about the Azlanti continent isles? It would be good to see the map now that the colony from Andoran is there as well as the original one with the crazy sun cult

That is reasonable.

That is better than the current campaign continent map. I like it will at least have terrain features

The Exchange

James Jacobs wrote:

We'll have more info soon, but the 10 regions encompass what we used to call the "Inner Sea Region"—it's the same focus on Avistan and northern Garund, but split into a more manageable number of areas rather than one for every single nation. For example: The "Saga Lands" is one of the ten regions, and it includes Lands of the Linnorm Kings, Varisia, New Thassilon, Irrisen, and Realm of the Mammoth Lords.

"Lost Omens" is indeed the name of the setting overall—it never really had a good name before, other than "The Pathfinder Campaign Setting" I guess.

BUT yes, we're still focusing on the once-called "Inner Sea Region" in this book. We will have a few words to say about the other continents and planets, but not much—those'll be for other books later.

We WILL finally have a detailed global map though, which I'm very excited and relieved about! :P

"Okay this makes more sense. So they will be more regional guides allowing you to cover more. I was shocked that in one year a bunch of countries went to hell and more. But, this is more of a sigh of relief."

The Exchange

James J - So, in looking through the AP, it looks like at the end, you give a wide birth of outcomes for Varisia:
1. It becomes Thassilon once again due to the many possibilities. With Sand Point falling, Korvosa, possibly Kaer Maga and other major towns, there is no more Varisia.
2. Will you then being moving with Thassilon in the 2e material and erasing Varisia as a whole?
3. The other option is the characters going back in time to the old Thassilon. Will history drastically alter and the current APs being erased as a whole?

And, will that allow for players to now be able to run Azlanti options going into other APs?

The Exchange

I agree or a revamp of Legacy of Fire or Serpent's Skull.

Your summation is pretty dead on. I didn't get to run it as I hoped. But, I do love treating everything as feats feel. It allows hope that you can run a class, but it is never the same. I like that feel. And the new feel of the class feats makes each class unique and powerful overall in their own way.

So... I've been in the Playtest forums for a while, and now that the Playtest is coming to a real close, I wanted to write a pretty extensive text on my general impressions and what I'd like to see going foward. I hope this feedback is somehow useful for the Paizo.

First of all, thanks Paizo for providing this Playtest environment and actually hearing and working on the feedback you get. Unfortunately this should be the rule for Alphas and Betas but it isn't (D&D Next Playtest, WoW BFA Beta, etc.). Like everyone I had some things that didn't go the way I prefered, but that's just life. Also thanks to all the other folks in these forums that engaged in civil discussion about all that stuff, both those who agreed and disagreed with my points of view. Without further ado, I can't humanly talk about every thing that I like/dislike, but here are some of the highlights:

The Good

- The general vibe of PF2. I don't know if that's the objective that Paizo is looking for, but the game really felt like and attempt to give depth and choice without unnecessary complexity. As a player/GM who always found PF1 to be too complex for the sake of it in a lot of thingst but also found 5e to be too shallow, that's great.

- The 3-action system. This is probably the single most loved feature of the Playtest and there's a reason for that. It's even simpler than 5e's move, action, bonus action to explain for new players while also giving a huge amount of different options on how you want your turn to go.

- The design on martial classes. The Fighter, Monk and Rogue gain extra points here for me, but all martial classes are miles away from the previous iterations. They are stronger, but not too powerful, and most importantly, they have tons of variety. When I read the Fighter Feats for the first time I was thinking about like 10 different builds and each one of them actually played in a different way in combat.

- No more /caster level scaling on spells. I know this hurts for some people, but this was the root...

The Exchange

Agreed. On page 97 under the first chapter of the The House Of The Itinerate Soul, the last sentence has the word “ar”where it looks like it should be “far.”

The Exchange

Paizo team,

So far I am liking Planar Adventures. I know you are going to be looking for Errata soon, so I thought I would start the thread. On page 18, under the Portal Seeker archetype, first paragraph, second sentence. I suggest removing While. It is a improper sentence. Instead, cut the word out and start with In many cases. It flows smoothly that way and makes sense.

Again, great job. I will find more I am guessing. Putting out large books will have their share:)

So Logan, on the Leveling up, are you saying every 1000 XP you go up a level? To me as a GM, that is confusing. You are either simplifying the XP for the monsters (ie a Lich may be 575 XP where a Kobold would be 10XP vs the larger values) or it is dumming it down wayyyy to much in my view.

I do like some simplification. That can come with spell casting, a turn, and other ways. However, some of the more complicated concepts aren't a bad thing. I know there are those that want to do away with XP all together. Some don't. So, a technique that allows for 1 pt for a session and 3 points for a level would work, regardless of difficulty of the creatures.

I hope you keep the XP in. You can take out the concept of CR if you want. Most of us as GM's can figure that out.

The Exchange

Okay, SPOILER ALERT for those that don't want to read on in regards to the Charnel God from the Bestiary 6...

Here we go, so, I have my party in a campaign facing the Charnel God/Goddess Acavna in a dungeon in Baba Yaga's hut. The Warpriest, Cleric and Paladin all failed a roll against the creature's ability of Severance. I know that this severs the contact between them and their deity, stuns them for round 1 and then staggers them for 24 hours. Would this also sever their ability to use divine spell or spell like abilities and power (ie the Paladin's ability to smite evil)? I would think so since if they are severed from their deity from which these powers come, it would affect them. Please give me your thoughts at fellow GMs.

The Exchange

I hate that. Paizo should make these available to import the images otherwise they are worthless for things like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds

Am just reading through this book and noticed for the Darkblight there isn't a specfic map or a distance/time from section for each area. Given the darkblight as a whole is 50 miles across I'm thinking maybe 5-10 miles between areas with maybe a 1-2 hour travel time from one to the next.

Due to the nature of the area I'm assuming that there is no set pattern and where the PCs end up is largely random.

How have other DMs dealt with this issue and what is the official line?

Daniel, it is great to see someone else had the same question mark I did. It would have been nice to have this along with a Pestilent Palace overall big map. I wonder if this was done to allow for the GMs to create there own, or for time/space/money.

I've read through the first Ironfang Invasion book, but I've been hesitant to buy more until I know whether or not I'm gonna run it. Now that we're (almost) at the end, what's the overall impression people have of the adventure? Any weak sections/books? How does it compare to other adventure paths?

Since I am preparing to run the Ironfang Invasion as my main campaign in the next few months, my overall impression of it is extremely favorable and I would recommend it. One's mileage may vary, of course, but most of the Adventure Paths written by Paizo that I have truly enjoyed generally have one or two books that feel "out of place" or just do not match the tone set up by the prior books (or just plain do not work for me). For example, becoming the Kwizatz Haderach for the Shoanti Tribes in Book 4 of Curse of the Crimson Throne springs to mind as a massive departure from the general tone of a dark urban Gothic Horror adventure that I simply found jarring (it felt more like it belonged in Rise of the Runelords if anything, but that is neither here nor there). The Ironfang Invasion is the first Adventure Path where I do not feel that anything feels out of place. Everything seems to connect. And I love it.

As far as the adventure itself, and whether you would want to run it, it depends on what you enjoy. Here are some of the adventure's selling points:

1. It has a very classic Dungeons & Dragons feel, in that it takes place away from major civilization; Large portions involve wilderness exploration and survival; There are several dungeons to explore and delve into; and, of course, the adversaries are classic creatures of D&D, including an army of evil goblins, dragons, and a wicked fairy queen to defeat.

2. There is a wide array of environments too keep things interesting, but they are much more grounded in classic fantasy adventure. It involves forests, hills and plains, mountains and valleys, and the Darklands/Underdark, and later, extraplanar locations such as the...

Well said Louis. It hits some of the points that I hit and more.

The Exchange

I definitely plan to run it and it was worth the subscription to it. Why I like it is because:
1. It deals with large army tactics at points and a siege. I like it for that.
2. I love that there is a warped fey section just for that.
3. I love the leader monsters used in the AP and how they are presented to the party through out. Everything is "neat" and a tidy army aspect. It shows even a well planned invasion has "hiccups."
4. I love that the Hobgoblins are finally portrayed in a D20 style module the way they should be:
A. Military organized and disciplined
B. Brutal and unforgiving
C. Ambitious and at times heartless
D. Conquest oriented and confident
5. I love the aspect of the party being part of the resistance and having to conduct the campaign in that way to survive and try and salvage not just one, but more lands later on.

It is a great snap shot into Nirmathis and Molthune. I definitely think it is worth owning, more-so I dare say than:
1. Shattered Star
2. Giantslayer (even though I like orcs and giants)
3. Council of Thieves
4. Kingmaker
5. Wraith of the Righteous. Even though I love a Mythic Level Campaign, I think this would have made a better one in my opinion.

The Exchange

My first question, directed to the Paizo team and to Crystal as well as you Joana, as a GM, is:
1. Is is me, or is there an area map where the A, B, C, D, E and F portions of the Blighted Forest should match up to? It just seems like there should be one.

2. Also, for the different reaches of the Pestilent Palace, wouldn't an overall overview map been helpful?

I am good with the imagination most times, but, I am asked to see if these were left out for time and space or due to a mishap. Thanks. Otherwise, I have to say, I love what Amanda did. It is a great snap shot into the weird and wicked side of a Fey second in command being warped by Cyth V'Sug.

This AP will probably benefit more than most from a guide, because the setting is more specialized and not every character class will work equaly well.

Also: it's finally time for that shark animal companion! ;-)

As with every Player's Guide I've been at the helm of, I aim to have it available in the window between subscribers getting the first volume and the street date of the first volume.

Fair warning for this time: With us getting a bunch of products and assorted things together for GenCon, we are pretty strained for resources, so there's a chance that this one might slip to past GenCon. I'm hoping that doesn't happen, but there's a strong chance it might and I wanted folks to know that.

Also unrelated, but you can make a legal paladin of Shelyn. She's NG after all.

Some do it for that reason I think. He has done a great job of following his tenants and being a champion for freedom, anti slavery, heroics and drink.

The Exchange

So, I've thought long and hard on this one as a GM (since DnD3.0). I understand why the great Gary Gygax and team decided Paladins should be bastions of LG (even if it was giving us players and GMs the finger in a sense).

However, a LG Paladin of say Cayden Cailean goes against the very mantras of that God. Or of Desna. Or of Shelyn. They are about freedom, creativity, dreams. Even a LG paladin of a CG Empyreal Lord flies in the very face of their beliefs.

In the Reign of Winter homebrew Golarion respin I am running, I made the decision to allow a Taldoran pc Paladin of Cayden to be CG. I know right now some of you are saying "blasphemy!" At me. That's okay. But, I felt a need as a fellow GM to share my thinking and let the group comment and discuss the merits and demerits. In my thinking, it allowed the player to run a character and holy warrior devoted to upholding his god's tenants. And yet be a paladin of those.

What are your thoughts on this? How about the Paizo team's? Again, I'm not looking to argue. In fact I'm pretty open to hear the various points of view.
