Look Into the Unknown

Friday, August 5, 2016

While our compliment of awesome Gen Con-bound comrades are steering the Paizo booth, running games, and working various panels, the Paizo skeleton-crew is continuing to assist customers, get packages out the door, and bringing you new content on paizo.com.

But, before everyone hopped on a plane, Adam Daigle sent over a few Pathfinder Adventure Path previews that I get to share with you all! In just a short time, the Strange Aeons Adventure Path will release. Until we get into the finer details that will be featured later this month on the blog, here's a sampling of art that is featured in the first volumes:

Illustrations by Michal Ivan and Damien Mammoliti

Illustrations by Damien Mammoliti, Crystal Sully, Caio Maciel Monteiro, Ramon Puasa Jr., and Kremena Chipilova

If you've been tracking #paizoatgencon, or following us on social media, you might have caught that we unveiled some pretty awesome images of the upcoming Curse of the Crimson Throne hardcover (and the limited edition version—details to come after Gen Con). Check 'em out!

Adam also just announced the Adventure Path following the Ironfang Invasion in this afternoon's Adventure Path panel. Look out for the Ruins of Azlant Adventure Path starting next summer! In Ruins of Azlant, PCs join an expedition to the shattered remains of old Azlant, explore its mysteries and dangers, and face a veiled master who wants to get its tentacles on an Azlanti doomsday device. Titles include (but are subject to change before release):

Spoilers!
  • Pathfinder Adventure Path #121: The Lost Outpost by Jim Groves
  • Pathfinder Adventure Path #122: Into the Shattered Continent by Robert Brookes
  • Pathfinder Adventure Path #123: The Flooded Cathedral by Mikko Kallio
  • Pathfinder Adventure Path #124: City in the Deep by Amber E. Scott
  • Pathfinder Adventure Path #125: Tower of the Drowned Dead by Ron Lundeen
  • Pathfinder Adventure Path #126: Beyond the Veiled Past by Thurston Hillman

More information about Strange Aeons, the Curse of the Crimson Throne hardcover, and Ruins of Azlant to come as we get closer to their release dates!

Chris, could you please delete the spoiler for the Ruins of Atzlant AP?
That takes away a lot of the fun about the campaign.

Am I only the only one seeing the Cthulhu piece and thinking he's saying "Oh my, guests? Come in, come in, it's dreadful at this dead of hour. I'll put some tea on."

Nope, you're not. :D

Also, I'm really loving the artwork for the cleric of Hastur.

Thanks, but i meant

I should have been more clear, sorry.

I don´t think that the titles give that much away, but the sentence in spoiler seems to name the main antagonist and his goal.

Silver Crusade

And?

Interesting.

Ruins of Azlant sounds awesome.

And congrats to Mikko for I think his first AP chapter.

GIVE IT TO ME NOW!

So cool!

Sweet! I love the art interior for Strange Aeons. Plus the new AP after Ironfang should be quite awesome. :)

So if Cthulhu doesn't feature heavily in Strange Aeons, where is that art piece actually from?

That's probably the art piece that kicks off the chapter on the Elder Mythos deities.

Enh. I think I have enough APs for now. Hope you guys like it.

Sometimes you find that stuff out early in an AP so it doesn't matter. Hell's Rebels is a good example.

There's a special version of the Crimson Throne?

I couldn't be more thrilled about an adventure path! I've been wanting to go to Azlant ever since I heard about it way back when. Now for the long wait...

I'll be re-subscribing for the Ruins of Azlant! Now to make sure I have the funds by next summer.... :)

Ruins of Azlant does sound pretty cool, always nice to see something that pulls heavily from Golarion lore.

Yes and yes! Ruins of Azlant is going to be great. I was not sure about the Crimson Throne but think I may be getting that one too. Good stuff, Paizo!

A lot of fresh blood in this one. Interested to see what that means for the lineup for the Starfinder AP.

I might have forgotten but I know the spring hardcover is a map rulebook, but what did they say was going to be the summer rulebook.

Silver Crusade

They didn't announce a summer Pathfinder hardcover at PaizoCon. Dunno if they did at GenCon.

That I've seen. A picture in the blog shows a leather-cover looking version. Just wondering about that.

Yep, there's gonna be a special edition of the hardcover.

They did not. There is also some uncertainty and potential shuffling of the "Encounter Codex" - though nothing definite there.

In fairness, the Gencon hardcover they did announce is the one I expect they want to get the buzz. And that's Starfinder. For all we know, that is the Gencon "Pathfinder" hardcover.

Ruins of Azlant sounds fun. And yes, glad to see Mikko Kallio joining the roster.

Ruins of Azlant?!? I could not have asked for a better AP! Should I be alive and able next summer, I will certainly resubscribe for that one! Have been waiting for this one for quite some time . . . Very exciting!

Seems to me JJ said that their intention was not to have "Starfinder" adversely impact the Pathfinder line.

It is taking the GenCon hardcover slot.

Excited about this AP. A few years back, 2013 I think, in one of those adventures you'd like to see threads I described a dream AP that sounded similar to this - if memory serves me correct. Colour me very excited, mind you I'm excited for strange aeons and iron fang as well. Going to be a good 18 months methinks.

Yeah but I am hard-pressed to imagine a way they could pull off something like an "Ultimate/Adventures" line rule hardcover AND a Starfinder rules system. That's a lot of crunch to go through, especially with how much playtesting and design work that Starfinder will need.

I would also guess that is why the Encounter Codex is the next book after the Villain Codex. Codexes/Bestiaries I don't require as much work by the rules team as more crunch heavy books.

That's probably the art piece that kicks off the chapter on the Elder Mythos deities.

Or perhaps the Continuing the Campaign article in the last adventure. Not sure if they'd have art ready to go for that yet...

Oh, and Cthulhu was shown invading Riddleport in the opening of Wake of the Watcher. Neither he nor his spawn appear in the adventure - not even in name.

The Starspawn is statted up in WotW bestiary section though.

Rysky wrote:

Yes, but he certainly "doesn't feature heavily in [Carrion Crown]." There are plenty of illustrations in a volume that are only just tangentially related the the Adventure Path itself. And with two Great Old Ones already heavily involved in Strange Aeons, trying to jam Cthulhu in there would be a bit much.

Didnt i read somewhere once that chthulu wont appear on golarion?

No but there was the Mythos article in that particular AP so that was where it made the most sense to put it.

What you probably read is that in Pathfinder canon Cthulhu lies in R'lyeh, which is where Lovecraft and his followers put it: in the south Pacific, on Earth.

Whether that means he won't appear on Golarion (or that your players won't encounter him on Golarion or elsewhere) at some point is an entirely separate question.

Truth! My players already met him . . . in the conclusion of our Kingmaker AP.

Man, that was fun.

Lisa Stevens addresses this topic in another thread.

For convenience:

Lisa Stevens wrote:

I will throw this in there. We have some books coming out in 2017 that we just weren't ready to announce at GenCon this year. Erik did a rather large change to the schedule only a few weeks before the convention and we are still figuring out how to get everything done while also launching Starfinder. We knew folks would be disappointed that there were no new announcements, especially about hardcover books, but there will be some. We just weren't ready to announce them yet and decided that, although a great venue for announcements, we weren't going to let GenCon dictate when we make our announcements. So the stuff that was ready to announce got announced. I am expecting the other stuff will get announced in the next few months as it gets firmed up.
