Well done, Lost Gamer! I enjoyed that scene.

Cutlass wrote:
Would you like me to go ahead and submit a detailed character sheet? Do you have a character sheet style/form that you prefer?

Not at this time. Let's hold off and see which characters get picked up for the game.

Cutlass wrote:

1) I assume that you are using a standard point buy for ability score generation. If so, what is the number of points used?

2) Would I be correct in assuming that you are using the standard character wealth by level guidelines in Core Rulebook (page 399)?

Hi Cutlass, your questions aren't silly at all. Both of your assumptions are correct. We'll be using standard wealth and a 20 point buy for ability scores.

I have a little PbP experience as a player on these boards, and also on GiantITP boards. I'm quite new to the tabletop RPGs in general.

My timezone is GMT+2.
I can post at least once a day, often more.

My character has a connection to the nature, specifically winds, and lives outside of the city. He has felt the encroaching mists in the air. He tried to stop them alone, but didn't succeed. Reluctantly, he retreated to the city of Chologadi to find allies and make a decisive attempt to deal with the fog. His approach ultimately boils down to blowing the fog away.

Now mechanically, I have two ideas: one is a druid with a storm druid archetype, the other is an oracle of wind. I'm not quite decided yet, but leaning towards a druid. The appearance and personality would somewhat vary based on this choice.

flykiller, I think both of those ideas sound solid, so I'd really like to see you fully submit either one...or, even both, if you like!

No prior PbP experience, so that will likely rule me out...I have been playing pathfinder since it came out in standard home games.

I would be interested in playing an inquisitor, preacher archetype. Logically I would be coming to town on behalf of my god to "enlighten the savages"...however since this is a home brew I don't know who the gods I would be fighting on behalf of would be...anyway this whole black cloud is encroaching on civilization, and well, like, this aggression will not stand, man.

My thought on gods was the Abadar "I came to explain to the savages the wonders of civilization" type God. If it was Abadar, I would be a crossbow wielding, civilization loving, preacher in the vein of the pith hat wearing Englishmen of yore.

If you want an outline, let me know if it's roll or point buy.

No prior experience doesn't rule you out at all. A well-written, solid character idea is really what I'm looking for here.

For lack of any other established deities for this game, you can use Abadar if you like...or a renamed god who stands in as an Abadar replacement. You have a lot of creative license here.

I'd love to see your outline (expressed as answers to the above questions). We'll be using a 20 point buy for ability stats.

Yes, please do so. There should be room for both you and Mark Sweetman to join us. I'm interested in learning more about your Vekeshi Mystic bard!

I was thinking a Docker - still need to swirl it around betwixt my noggin to figure out race and class. Probably a primary caster as that's what looks to be missing at the moment.

Given that we'll be part of the constabulatory, I was seeing him as a solid adult age and starting to move past the edgier aspects of the docker philosophy. Sort of a teenage bohemian who has grown up a bit and started to move past his childhood rebellion. Still has some ties to the movement and can talk / walk the talk / walk when he wants to.

Does that jive in with the group?

I think it would work well! I'm interested, and we did just confirm the departure of one player. I'd be pleased to have you, so please do go ahead and work this up if you want in.

My approach to this situation depends on whether drinking in public is illegal; even if it's only "technically" illegal...

What are the laws on that sort of thing?

Totally improvising here...

Drinking in public is legal, although clearly intoxicated individuals can be hauled in to sober up in a cell. On a day of public celebration such as this, there are likely many people drinking, and so the constabulary is probably forced to show some leniency on public intoxication, so long as people aren't causing trouble.

Greeting intrepid adventurers! I am looking for six players to take part in a short pbp adventure, The Jungle Ruins of Madaro-Shanti, by Frog God Games. This is an adventure that combines a dangerous dungeon crawl with a bit of jungle exploration. As with most of the stuff from Necromacer/Frog God, the adventure is also rather challenging, and could prove deadly to those who charge into every situation heedlessly. At this time, I am seeking concepts only, for 6th level PCs. Please read the player background info below, then take some time to think through your answers to the questions that follow (with thanks to GMT, from whom I swiped the idea). This selection process will not be first-come, first-served. I will hold positions open for three days, then select the six players I like the most. I'll be looking particularly for interesting personalities, thematically-appropriate concepts, well-written ideas, and to a lesser extent, party balance. Material from the Pathfinder core rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Ultimate Magic is available for character creation. Other sources may be approved also, please ask me first. The campaign world is a generic homebrew, not Golarion, so you may invent details as you see fit. Play by post experience is helpful, but not strictly required. Interested? Read on!

Player Background:
The port city of Chologadi lies in the tropical southern lands,
on the perilous coastline of a dark, jungle-shrouded continent.
It is a town of explorers, trappers, and traders, making tenuous
alliances with the civilized tribes of the region, but also forced
to battle off raids by savages and cannibals, who inhabit the
region in hordes. In recent weeks, a new threat has appeared
to endanger the town’s precarious existence on these dangerous
coasts. Within the jungle, trappers and hunters have encountered
a spreading pall of black clouds and roiling fog, a terrible
phenomenon that causes death and rot as it slowly expands. The
dark clouds are now only thirty miles from the town itself, and
advancing at a rate of perhaps two miles in a day. The town’s
livelihood has been brought to its knees; trading has virtually
stopped, and there are no living animals left to hunt, for all are
fleeing. The town leaders have offered great rewards to anyone
who can discover the source of this threat and end it, for it is
terribly clear what will happen to the town itself if the cloud
should reach its walls. Thus far, however, no one who has taken
up the challenge has returned from the tangled depths of the
jungle. In a final attempt to combat the threat at its source, the
town has outfitted everything that is needed for a full-scale
expedition – all that is needed is a brave party of adventurers
to lead it.

Player Questions:

1. Do you have previous pbp experience as player and/or DM? If so, on Paizo's boards, or elsewhere?

2. Where do you live (specifically, in what time zone)?

3. How often can you expect to post (barring illness, vacation, etc.)?

Character Questions:

1. Who are you, and why are you in Chologadi?

2. What do you look like?

3. How would you describe your personality?

4. Why will you join the expedition into the jungle, and what skills do you offer to help ensure its success?
----------------------------------
Thanks one and all for your time and interest! I'm looking forward to reading some great concepts!

AlanM, even though Robert hasn't noticed anything out of the ordinary himself, he certainly might follow one of the other agents in their investigations.

The crowd-goers give way easily to Merle, recognizing him as a member of the RHC. The old druid's rantings are easy enough to hear as Merle draws closer. With his hands raised above his head, the man is shouting, "Can you not see that this course is wrong? Ships of iron and black smoke filling the skies! The old ways, the old traditions, they must be respected! Wake up, you brainless cattle! Industry is the path to ruin!" He continues his tirade, seemingly heedless of Merle's approach.

Jerrold Delmar wrote:

After the woman catches his attention, Jerrold simply stares at her for a minute or two. He's trying to get a better look at the object, but also to get a read on her body language. If she should happen to notice an RHC agent staring at her, all the better to judge her reaction...

If Jerrold is still unsure of the nature of the object, he will alert the police at the checkpoint to her presence and request they search her before allowing her through.

** spoiler omitted **

Jerrold, his perception mystically augmented, gazes more intently at the woman...

Jerrold:
The woman's posture and demeanor certainly don't seem unusual or threatening. Upon closer scrutiny you realize that the object tucked into the woman's sash is actually some sort of elaborate-looking spyglass, and not a weapon at all. No doubt, this woman just wants to get a closer look at her monarch and the other dignitaries. Furthermore, there are no magical auras to be seen amongst the crowd.

Frustrated at this false alarm, Jerrold continues to look over the crowd, aware that the time to discover and weed out any potential security threats is rapidly ticking down.

Jerrold:
A squat man, dressed in the colorful but utilitarian garb of a Docker drinks from a flask next to a tree with a purple ribbon tied around it. Something about this man jogs a memory...

Elan Smokestick wrote:

Elan replies politely to the other's request for introduction, but it's rather distracted by the vision of the two seemingly unhappy men. Pleased to meet you, my name is Elan, would you excuse me for a moment gentlemen? he says, as he gets closer to the two men in question, disappearing into the crowd for a moment.

1d20 +8; 1d20 +1 I stand near them but inside the crowd, trying to not be noticed, and listen if they have something to say. First roll is Stealth, second is Perception

Elan excuses himself, then easily wends his way through the crowd to get closer to the pair of grizzled men. They don't appear to notice his small frame lurking nearby.

Elan:
Even this close, it's difficult to hear what the men are saying, though, as they are muttering to one another in low voices, and the crowd is quite noisy. However, you can pick out a few snippets: "dirty Danorans" and "damned tieflings" for sure.

Deevor, I sent the info for Ereviss' character sheet.

Mark Sweetman wrote:
Finder's Keeper - are you still looking for one more?

Very likely! What do you have in mind?

Jobo, how would your Vekeshi Mystic function as a member of the Royal Homeland Constabulary, specifically as a member of a 5-6 person squad (i.e., the adventuring party)? I'm a little concerned, because it sounds like you want your character to embrace the 'elves are terrorists' stereotype that many Risuri citizens espouse.

Oh, and what class did you have in mind for this hypothetical character?

Jobo, are there any other character theme feats which catch your eye? The four active players I have right now are a Skyseer, Gunsmith, Technologist, and Yerasol Veteran.

I'd strongly prefer there be no overlap between PCs theme feats.

Anyone still paying attention to this post?

It looks like the game may be in need of one or two replacement players. Give a shout if you're here and interested.

At this point, there are about twenty minutes left until the checkpoint is scheduled to be opened, and the crowd allowed onto the bridge. Messengers bedecked in the heraldry of the king have begun distributing lyric sheets for the royal anthem, and anticipation of the citizens continues to build.

Robert looks over the assembled throng through bleary eyes...

Robert:
...but sees nothing out of the ordinary.

Merle's sharp eyes scan the crowd, his war-tested savvy put to the test...

Merle:
A minor disturbance catches the soldier's eye, as many of the crowd-goers seem to be giving wide berth to someone. A closer look reveals an unkempt older man with his hair done up in dirty braids. If that weren't enough, his green robes and sandaled feet give him away as an adherent of the old druidic traditions. He seems to be ranting about something, although his words are lost to Merle in the noisy buzz of the crowd.

After listening to Merle's briefing, Jerrold steps away from the others (as much as possible in this crowd) and perches himself upon an old crate against a wall. He launches into his arcane intonation, then gazes out upon the assembled throng.

Jerrold:
None of the faces visible to Jerrold jog any memories from wanted posters, and there doesn't seem to be anything amiss with the weather. However, Jerrold does notice a woman with something tucked into the sash of her garment...it looks like it might be the haft of a knife, but it's hard to be certain without close inspection.

Elan, standing a bit apart from the other members of the squad, keeps a close eye on those nearby, looking for anyone who may be acting unusually...

Elan:
You see a pair of lean, muscular men, who look a little out of place. They are maybe in their mid-fifties, grizzled-looking, and sharp-eyed. They lean close together, whispering softly, and seem to lack the obvious enthusiasm of most of the others in the crowd.

DM Deevor wrote:

I have it, I can send you Ereviss' character sheet this evening.

Well, looks like we might be down two players. Anyway, my plan is to go ahead and accelerate my posting rate now, to get the game truly rolling. If we have only four players right now, that's enough to get the game off the ground. Maybe mangalore or Lass will catch up. If not, we'll recruit one or two more to join us in the near future.

New IC post will be up a little later today.

Guys, normally I'd like to try and have a new post for you every day, but for now I'm going to wait a bit longer since we've only had half of you post in the game thread so far. Hopefully, the others will join you soon.

Merle:
Drawing on his military experience, Merle quickly makes a mental checklist of various factions which might cause trouble at the day's proceedings.

1) Dockers, angry because of how the city treats them (usually burly working men with an eclectic fashion sense)

2) Primalists—i.e., believers in the old druidic faith—angry at all the
new industry (generally recognizable with their particular hairstyles, sandals, and adornment with druidic religious icons)

3) Agents of the fey terrorist known as “Gale,” who might try to sabotage the ship (typically elves or half-elves with impeccable grooming from their rituals, though they often try to hide this by dressing in soot-stained clothes)

4) Finally, and hitting closest to home for Merle: War veterans, who might target the ship’s tiefling designer (usually
men either in their mid- to late-twenties, or late-fifties/early-sixties; usually in better fighting shape than common citizens)

Jerrold Delmar wrote:
((A couple of quick questions... Does Flint's police force routinely wear armor? Would any weaponry be allowed...

The police force does wear armor, mostly studded leather and the like. The citizenry is not permitted to bring weapons to this sort of event, but that's not to say someone might not have one that is concealed.

Just an fyi, I was mostly just wanting a little group interaction in your first posts, with everyone comparing notes, making intros, and so forth. This is not to take anything away from the first posts, just to say that you're maybe getting a little ahead of me. Elan and Jerrold, your actions can stand for when we get a little further into things.

Eh, I couldn't wait any longer. The IC thread has now launched!

See you there. :D

The Gears of Revolution Start Turning

It is spring of the year 500 A.O.V. (After Our Victory). Seven years after the end of the Fourth Yerasol War, the shipyards in Flint have completed the first Risuri warship powered solely by steam engine, not sail. Your monarch, King Aodhan, has come to Flint to witness the official launch of this mighty vessel. Woodenhulled but with a heart and skin of iron, the Royal Naval Ship Coaltongue will act as a deterrent against future aggression from Risur’s enemy across the sea, the nation of Danor.

The Royal Homeland Constabulary has been called upon to provide security, and you have spent the past several weeks working to make sure this event goes off without a hitch—canvassing the docks, performing background checks on the guest list, coordinating with the local police to set up a perimeter around the royal docks, and following various directives of your superiors.

Now, as a warm breeze off the sea mingles the scents of elaborate floral decorations with the pervasive coal soot that always hovers over Flint, you’re at the first of two checkpoints, working with Flint police to let in a crowd of local citizens who just want to line the streets and cheer their king. There are thousands of residents now assembled in the Royal Square, hoping to witness the momentous arrival of their monarch. Police officers will soon count off exactly 700 citizens who will be allowed access to the bridge that connects Royal Square to the Royal Shipyards. From there, they will be allowed into Fleet Square on the shipyard island so they can cheer as the carriages of the king and other dignitaries arrive. With only a half hour to go before the check point is to be opened, you recall the simple instruction of your direct superior, Assistant Chief Inspector Stover Delft...no one dangerous gets through!

Area Map

Jerrold:
You are somewhat distracted today, due to vivid memories of a vision you had the night before. You clearly remember seeing a crowd, a purple ribbon, the Beran city of Seobriga, an empty bed, a broken tin whistle, and a girl with a lisp singing the Risuri royal anthem.

First things first, make some introductions (this is the first time the six of you have been assigned to work together) and compare notes to see what you may know about the kind of Flinters who would be undesirable to allow through the checkpoint. Suggested skill checks include Kn: History, Kn: Local, or Profession: Soldier.

Everyone, as we head toward the launch of the campaign, I wanted to go over a few house rules and expectations.

1. Skill checks are a very important part of this game, so please do roll dice for skill checks often. I will call for specific rolls at times, of course, but a timely roll when chatting up an NPC or looking around a room is very likely to have a meaningful impact. You all have these wonderful skills (social, knowledge, profession, etc.)...put them to use!

2. Please use the die rolling code on this website for all of your rolls.

3. When rolling dice, please separate out all modifiers individually, and apply them all separately to the base roll. After the roll, please include the reason for each modifier. This makes it a lot easier for me to make sure that nothing has been overlooked.

For example:

1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 = 22 (Flanking) is much preferable to simply 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

4. I will roll for each PC's initiative whenever combat occurs, to help speed things along. I will also roll for passive skill checks (e.g., Perception) when needed.

5. In combat, we'll use 'initiative blocks' to help streamline things. For instance, if the init order looked something like this:

18: Robert
16: Merle
12: Elan
11: 2 Thugs
10: Tok
9: Jerrold
8: 1 Mercenary Captain
6: Crispin

I'd first call for actions from Robert, Merle, and Elan, and resolve them in the order of their posting. This makes it easier for each player to build off of the actions of those who post first, especially if a particular die roll is pretty obviously a success or failure. Following the resolution of actions for those three characters, I would resolve actions for the two thugs, and then call for actions from Tok and Jerrold. After those two resolutions (again, in the order they get posted), the Merc Captain goes. Then, I'd need Crispin's action, end the round, rinse and repeat. Hopefully, by using this method, combats can get completed in a relatively timely fashion.

6. If 24 hours have elapsed since one of my posts without response from a player, I will reserve the right to advance the game. In combat, I will either have the PC delay action or have the character perform some basic action such as a routine melee attack. Out of combat, it will be assumed the PC simply goes along with the flow suggested by the other characters.

That's all for now. Please feel free to ask questions or make comments.

Not a problem, here you go!

Now, should I just let Barret's be arms merchants, or is there a more applicable/interesting route they should go?

Nothing springs immediately to mind. I'd say you could certainly stick to your original plan, or go with something shared with Jerrold.

In the meantime, I remain on track to start the game tomorrow morning. Looking forward to it!

Thanks, AlanM! That should be enough to get started on.

All, I've decided to set a firm launch date for the game thread...Friday morning.

Merle, Elan and Jerrold look ready to start.

Crispin is essentially ready, although I would like to see a brief background (even a few bullet points would be fine).

Robert is essentially ready as well. I would like to see an avatar pic assigned to his profile, though!

Lass, we just need you to post an alias for Tok and Wrench. Let me know if you have any trouble with that.

Sure, you can go ahead and do that.

Enough to show you've given some thought to a background, but you certainly don't need to write a novel. Maybe a couple of paragraphs or so, that would be fine.

DM, just sent Agrimar's character sheet to you. I'm eager to get in on the fun!

Is Agrimar's sister, Ysabot also part of the adventuring party? I don't remember seeing an IC post from her yet...

edit: I'll be able to post pretty much as usual during the holidays, so no need to bring things to a halt on my account.

I've got nowhere with being given this thread, I'll start up a new discussion and recruitment thread to add to the gameplay thread, if that's OK with you guys?

DM Deevor, I'm not sure how you wanted to handle the search for additional players, but I'd like to volunteer for the role of Agrimar Vaskel, if you'd have me. I've been following the game thread so far, and I like what I see. Also, I own the pregen characters PDF from Legendary Games, so no worries there.

AlanM wrote:
The sheet is almost done, the background needs a little more work (I may end up writing it in general terms to start with and filling in some blanks as I get the time). Quick question about the The Man with Two Guns is God theme feat: 1) How does this feat interact with having a melee weapon in one hand (say a shortsword) and a pistol in the other? Do I get the benefits of the TWF feat with the pistol, but not the sword? and 2) Is it just TWF with firearms, or is it the TWF tree with firearms?

My interpretation of the feat: 1) You can draw one or two guns using Quick Draw, but the Two Weapon Fighting benefit only applies when wielding two firearms. So, when you have a sword in one hand and a gun in the other, no TWF bonus occurs. 2) I'd say just the TWF feat, not the whole tree.

Just checking in.
