Farin, frothing at the mouth with fury spins the winch on his massive crossbow once more. Raaaahhhh! he roars thunderously. Letting fly once more.
It occurred to me that I should probably get the bonus for attacking from higher ground. If so I have not included it.

Farin takes the whistle, keeping it safe in pocket under his heavy poncho. When everyone settles in for the night he takes the first watch. Creeping around the compound looking for any signs of the unusual.

When morning comes he wakes before sunrise. Quickly he gathers his kit and dons his armor, and moves to the top of the wall above the door. He eats a cold breakfast from his personal supplies.

Thanks. I'm never home so the 3 ft of snow melted then froze then melted again and refrozen then again. So there's about 1" of solid ice in my inclined driveway. Grrr!

Farin nods his head in agreement with Hella. Agreed. turning to Ravboom Not a bad idea. If'n we can attack 'em from behind perhaps we can force 'em into the compound. Then our other people will be on them. We'll have them in a meat grinder that way. Hella may be right. An ambush farther out is dangerous. Lots o' variables. The dwarf scratches his beard in thought. Ere now Rav, whadda he think o' hiding in one o' them holes? That'd be a gruesome surprise!

I found plenty o' tracks out there. Sure signs this place's been scouted recently. I'm thinkin we should take a group an' ambush 'em on their way back. Leave the rest here to defend the outpost if you want. Now's the time to be takin' the fight to them.

I agree. Perhaps with the exception of the one with family being held hostage. The boy is still a criminal. He could have tried to escape or any of a billion scenarios. It's only dumb luck he still alive anyway.

No worries. I'm a bit sad we didn't hack the bandits into coyote bait tho. Thieving and banditry is not something that has historically been taken lightly. Just being horse thieves in the US at one time would get you hung no questions asked.

Thoroughly enfuriated at being completely ignored Farin pulls a large antler handled knife and goes to work removing scalps of the dead bandits. For the rest of the trip to the trading post he remains well ahead of the group alone and watchful.

Upon reaching the outpost, rather than head inside with the rest, the fowl spirited dwarf scouts around the perimeter of the compound. Then a bit farther out.

Perception (immediate perimeter):1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Who said anything about hiring on criminals that prey on good folks? Farin pushes his way through. I came to help stop bandits! Not hire em on as our own! I ain't never agreed to be followin anyone's orders. If this groups to be functioning, it's going to be through agreement not half cocked schemes to be putinyourselves in power as kings and queens! Farins face flushes bright red with anger. It is quite evident that he is passionate about this subject.

Farin furiously works the winch on his crossbow and slaps another bolt in place. Once again he sights in on a bandit. With a loud clunk the weapon belches it's deadly projectile.
I'm not sure if the one on the far left is a human or not but if it is add +2 to attack and damage.

Farin drops off his horse taking up position under its neck, using the beast for cover while takes aim.

Not sure if I can use a large horse as cover or not. Trying to Texas Ranger it a bit here. Also I can't manage to work the map from my phone. Fangled technology!

Hrmm. Arrivin troops would imply contact with the outside world. Coordinating a meeting location'd be perfectly reasonable. People're lazy by nature. Tracking actively moving targets leads to irritation, complacency and boredom. All of these things can be used te our advantage. Farin's gaze sweeps the others in the room. I'm not against a stronghold but I think it's a mistake. We're on our own fer a long time. Focusing on the immediate problem at hand is more practical. However that doesn't mean we don't plan for the future.

Mirth aside Farin turns to the others. Stayin' mobile is the key. If ye don't take nothin' there won't be nothin te loose. We've enough woodsmen ere to keep us fed and clothed indefinitely. Pack animals can haul extra gear and game. A permanent base camp gives a place to be looted and tracked to and from. Clear the bandits loot the supplies and move on te the next place.

Out of my way fool boy! Comes a booming voice from beind the closed doors. Loudly the doors swing open. A large dwarf, his hair and beard resembling a massive lions mane stomps into the room. He is clad in a heavy brown poncho, black and green patches sewn on at random, large fur boots with a massive crossbow cradled in his arms. Eying the others in the room his gaze lingers on the humans, sizing them up. As moves through the rest of the crowd he nods slightly to the little goblin. Torag's crispy beard... The goblin is coming too? Hrmph. I hadn't thought me'self late. Apologies for that... he says looking to the hosts.
