I know that the Second Edition of Pathfinders is coming out fairly soon, and I was wondering if anyone had any clue when the first edition might be phased out in favor of the second edition in Pathfinder Society. When I play Pathfinder, I play in Society, and if there is an ETA, I want to be getting ready. I've tried looking for information on this, and I can't find anything so far.

This isn't at all what you are wanting to do from what I can see, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway. Play a support or debuff class like a bard or a witch. My witch technically has the least amount of blood on her hands (technically) than any other character I've played so far and has lead to the most amount of disarmed/non-killed enemies ever for me, and I wasn't even trying to pull that off. How? Well, you see, she rarely if ever (depending on how technical you get*) uses direct attack spells. What does she use? Evil eye (debuff, no blood spilled), Misfortune (debuff, no blood spilled), Fortune (buff, no blood spilled), Slumber (wonderful hex, sends enemies to sleep so you can take them prisoner!), and spells like Glitterdust (blinds enemies, makes them more visible). So I guess a lot of it depends on what you mean by non-violent. Do you mean, "Takes no action in battle?" Do you mean, "Actively attempts to stop battle in any way necessary once it starts?" Do you mean, "Doesn't personally cause harm to anyone in battle?" *She did vomit a swarm once, and the swarm did attack people. My witch isn't meant to be a pacifist.
So, I just wanted to hop in this morning and let everyone know that I've read their responses and have been looking over what they have said. As of yet, I still haven't come to a decision, and my only conclusion so far is, "Ah, there are so many options with potentially neat flavor!" For example, I think having a rougey or ninjay kitsune would be awesome favor; she lurks in the shadows popping out each time as a new individual! Being a mesmerist would be neat, too; she controls the minds of those around her, bending them to see her as she wills. Religiously connecting her to Sivanah somehow would be wonderful, too (like via an inquisitor, although I may wait a while before I build an inquisitor, as I already have one in play). Investigator sounds fun, too; she loses herself in the information she gathers, especially in the information about other people she gathers. There are just so many options, but I'm not really sure how to make them work? Like, because kitsune have -2 str, sending them into melee is tricky unless one does a dex build, but they don't have the feats to really go ranged, especially because I'll be sinking one of them into Realistic Likeness. So I've been building up a lot of characters over the last couple of days (like I'll build up a ninja) and then worry about whether or not I've made her in such a way that she'll be effective in combat. I feel that this is an area where I struggle in PFS: I'm not very good in combat or building characters that are very good in combat, and it worries me because I know that this is a collaborative game and I want to pull my weight.
Quote: On the other hand... The Field Guide options are a lovely way to build the background of your character. I hope they don't get retired. It's a great way to build a character with a connection to the Hell Knights, who appear in a number of different scenarios. Quote: I personally still enjoy the book and would hate to see it deprecated. I would like to see an update, but since John already wrote the elemental planes campaign setting I'd be surprised if we saw anything this year. He still has his day job, after all... maybe next year or the year after would be more realistic? Oh yes, I still love the Field Guide and don't want to see it go away, and I love the fact that you can build the Hell Knights into your character, I was just wondering if there was any plans in the pipes to get any more updated prestige rewards, which I absolutely love. ^_^ It sounds like, sadly, there aren't. Maybe someday!
I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there is a plan to update the information in the Pathfinder Society Field Guide? Specifically, the Prestige Awards awards that one can get for belonging for a faction. For example, I know that while people who are in the Dark Archives faction can get the Prestige Awards from the Cheliax faction, some of of these seem thematically . . . problematic given that the Dark Archives aren't exactly connected to Cheliax. Sorry if this has been brought up, but I did a search and couldn't find anything about it and Quote:
I can't find anything about "Canny feint." Is this supposed to be "Cunning Feint?"
So, I have desperately wanted to play a class built around the kitsune "Realistic Likeness" feat (the one that allows you to Alter Self into a specific person) for some time, but I can't figure out what class to put her in. I have this whole character concept built where she's addicted to her alter self ability and she doesn't really have a concept of her actual self; she gets lost in the personas she takes over and she became an adventurer to get her fix. The absolutely most glorious class that I can find that would fit this backstory so far would be the Mesmerist class with the Thought Eater archetype, but I'm not sure how to make either Mesmerists or Thought Eaters effective in battle, and because this would be for PFS, my character would need to be effective in battle. I've played around a little bit with the occult classes, and I have had problems with them because of things being immune to mind effects (although I see mesmerists can eventually get around that somewhat with Psychic Inception), but the limited number of spells today and the fact that the spells only go up to level 6th mean this clearly isn't meant to be a full spellcaster, and I'm uncertain as to how to build one. Another option would be to go with a bard. I'm not sure what, if any, archetype I should take if I went bard. Nothing about bardic music in general seems particularly great or terrible in favor (flavor wise) for my character, although the spell list of bards is good (Vocal Alteration, Gallant Inspiration) and bardic music could be good in combat (the -2 str for kitsune means that being martial for my character would be harder). Then, of course, there is Some Other Option I Haven't Thought Of. Maybe a rogue of some type? I don't know. Finally, with Blood of the Beasts being out but not ruled as being legal or illegal yet, Keen Kitsune means that the +2 int and +2 dex kitsune might be ruled legal for PFS and put some more options on the table that aren't out there yet. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want to play this character, but I'm feeling very lost.
Thanks for the support, everyone! It really makes me feel better. So maybe I will out myself. But does anyone have advice on how to start that conversation? I mean, it feels weird to just go up to someone's table and be all, "Hi! So I'll be playing at your table today and I have some memory issues and note-taking issues that mean it will be difficult for me to process and write down what our mission is, but I will do my best . . ." although I suppose I could do just that.
Just as an aside, I do my best to take notes in pathfinder, but I have IRL learning issues that cause me trouble with note taking. Like, in school, I have note-taker (when one is available) because I have "disabilities:" I have trouble paying attention to what someone is saying if I am also trying to pay attention to what I am writing at the same time (I can usually only do one or the other, and if I try to do both, I do both poorly), and I have trouble moving things from my short-term memory to my long term memory. It's . . . sub-optimal on every level. I haven't told anyone in PFS yet because it's embarrassing and time consuming to do so, and I generally just do the best I can, but maybe I should just out myself? I dunno. I feel bad getting to the end of the mission and admitting that I don't remember what we're doing anymore and the sketchy notes I wrote don't cover it ^_^;
So, I'm a big fan of the witch class. The first time I made a witch I went with human, but I've been thinking about rolling up a second, non-human witch; I've seen lots of recommendations that elves are a good race to play because of their alternate racial ability Dreamspeaker which may add to the DC of the slumber hex . . . . . . the problem is that it also may NOT add to the DC of the slumber hex; there seems to be some debate, and a lot of advice to "check with your DM first," which obviously isn't possible in society play. So, what is the general consensus on this? Is going with an elven Dreamspeaker likely to cause problems in society play, or will I likely be good to go? I don't want to cause problems, which is the reason I made my first witch human, but I really would like to play a non-human character. If a Dreamspeaker witch is likely to cause problems, I'll probably just sit on my wild urges for a non-human witch and hope that "Keen Kitsune" is ruled as legal for PFS. |
