"I can also heal. That was the kind of magic everyone expected of me in the church. I can conjure light and see magic. And, well, I figured out I can use magic to make someone friendlier, too. But I feel guilty about using that trick. Really, my magic isn't the same as those of other priests or acolytes. I just hope it works on whatever's in that manor."

As the manor comes into sight, Elise starts heading toward it, while admiring the scenery. "What a beautiful view! If we can restore this mansion, I'm sure it will be exquisite."

"That's a really sad way to think about life," responds Elise. "What about happiness? Love?"

As she walks, Elise starts trying out some magic. Eventually, she comes to a full stop, focuses, and waves her arms around. Suddenly, a spark of lightning shoots from her hand!

"There it is! I'd never realized I had such magics before, but when the hawks attacked me, it just suddenly came out. It's a lot easier to hit something with this lightning than it is with an arrow."

Elise collects the arrows and the longbow. She also explores the hidey-hole that the hobgoblin was attacking from before he came down. In particular, she wants to find rations.

"No. Yes. I mean, a little, nothing major." As the adrenaline fades, Elise doesn't look at Katze. Instead, she just stares at the dead hobgoblin for a long while. Finally, she turns to Katze with a look of confusion. "I've never done that before. Killed a man. Or at least anyone man-like." Elise takes a deep breath, then exhales slowly. "I think I should feel guilty, but I don't. I admit I feel rather proud."

A part of Elise is unnerved as one of her arrows embeds itself into hobgoblin flesh--the first time ever she had struck a humanoid with an arrow. But there was no time to dwell on that fact as the hunter approached Katze. Instead, Elise continued to fire her shortbow.

"You snared the wrong people in your little trap!" declares Elise, as the last hawk is skewered and Katze heals her wounds. She moves closer and fires two more arrows at the hobgoblin. Move 25 feet, so I'm 25 feet away.

"No, get away from me!" cries Elise. She flails wildly at the hawk above her and as she does so, sparks shoot from her hands.

Feeling bad for the critter herself, Elise can hardly complain when Katze chooses to set the fox free. She watches it run off. "We definitely wouldn't want to get ourselves caught in one of these traps!"

"Oh, don't tell me you haven't seen a fox before, either? They're more similar to dogs, really, and are valued for their fur. Poor thing, fell into someone's trap. I feel bad for it, but mother would chide me and say hunting is no different than trapping. Just part of the circle of life." Elise sighs. "So I guess we might just move on? What do you think?"

Elise comes to a stop, draws her bow, and listens carefully, waiting for a moment to see if the cries continue or if they come to an end. And also if any other dangerous creature was the cause of such cries.

"I've had to strike out on my own recently. Want enough to start a new life, maybe in Ionian lands. I guess I want to learn more magic too, but I've never exactly learned magic by training. It just sort of happens. What about your own magic, how does it work?"

Elise goes on the hunt . . . oh how she wish she had the foresight to purchase food. She'd gotten too used to hunting.

She does manage to find enough for the day, anyway. "Makes me wish I had convinced that elf to come with us," she says, with regret. If Katze doesn't have any food, Elise would share.

Sitting by the campfire, Elise chats as she eats. "Have you thought about what you might do if we succeed in our quest? That sure is a lot of gold we'd get if so!"

Elise wasn't as sure as Katze about how dead bodies worked. As Katze digs up the remains, Elise looks around warily. "I don't know why there's a dead body here, but we shouldn't stay. Grab whatever you want and let's keep going!"

Elise is surprised by the question. "Yes! That's a snake. They slither about and bite, their fangs usually have poison. Have you never seen snakes before, or do you just have another name for them?"

"I'm glad your reflexes are faster than a snake's!" says Elise as the threat is dealt with before she can even respond. "Still not sure where the footprints came from, but maybe that's enough adventure for one day?" Elise sees if she can extract venom from the snake for some beneficial purpose.

Otherwise, she's eager to continue along the main path once more.

Hey, what do you think about recruiting more people back at the inn?

Elise originally thought this was an easy job. But now that she's starting to understand the threat is real, it becomes more logical to get help! Seems like we have a real cleric and an elf that have arrived, which are the two people Elise is most interested in finding right now.

"Silver? Is that the answer to whatever evil the wife might have summoned?" Elise reaches out, if Lilith is willing to offer it, and then admires it in her hand. "I'll pay you a fair price for this," she says, pulling out her coinpurse.

I have no idea what that price might be though!

"Where might she have gotten the power to summon such a creature? It's not something a woman usually learns on her own."

When Elise is done with her questions, she returns to the inn to find Katze and share what she has learned.

Elise looks over the cloaked man. "He doesn't look well at all. I hope his friends find the cure."

She's feeling less surprised as someone else tells him the stories are real. "I was hoping that the tales of the place being haunted were just stories, but it seems everyone believes them. There's a man said to be the heir to that estate. He wants to reclaim it, but ran off in terror when he saw lights and heard sounds from within. I agreed to help him reclaim the manor, but I haven't the faintest idea where to start. Do you have any ideas on what might help? Any ancient lore that might be of use?"

"Oh, sorry for the interruption. You must be LIlith? I heard you were a healer, and I have a bit of a problem I'm hoping you might help me understand. You see, I'm a healer too, but I don't understand exactly how I'm doing it. It might have something to do with my heritage, though."

As she says this, Elise pulls back the shawl covering her head, revealing her blend of human and elven features--particularly her pointy ears. She gazes for a reaction. "Sorry if I'm presuming too much. I had come here just looking for supplies for a journey to Seaside Manor, so I'm happy just to do that if you prefer."

A witch . . . that's ironic. It's what some in the Church must've thought she was. A woman practicing dark magics who could not be trusted. On the one hand, associating with this witch would only confirm everyone's suspicions if anyone learned of it. On the other hand, maybe this witch had some answers to questions Elise never thought to ask until now.

Steeling herself, she sets out to the edge of the village to find Lilith.

Elise sets off to see if there's something akin to an apothecary in town. If so, she asks the person for more information about Seaside Manor.

"You're a fighter and a spellcaster? That's really quite impressive. I don't exactly have a history of fighting. I just know a few minor magics. I can certainly heal wounds. And I can hunt alright with this bow. Let's just hope we don't have to get into a fight in the first place."

Elise doesn't yet know she can zap people with electricity, but she'll find out soon enough I imagine.

When Katze mentions talking to the local priests, Elise becomes concerned for some reason. "Oh, I don't know, what could they possibly tell us? Maybe it's more efficient to split up? You can go talk to the priests, I can go shopping. We can meet back here when we're done."

Elise asks the bartender for directions to the manor, and then steps out as well, following Katze.

"Should we do some shopping first? I'm not sure where to start, but we sure got a lot of gold to equip ourselves. Maybe we do that, and head out in the morning?"

The hesitation in her voice betrays that Elise may be a little scared after all. Hearing that the previous owner of the manor killed himself, his wife, and two daughters seems to have made an impression.

Elise regards Katze for a moment, wondering how much to reveal. But she decides she should be honest with her new partner and protector. "Nothing happened to my mother. Or at least not my adoptive mother." Elise pulls back her shawl for a moment, and pointy elven ears peek out from underneath. "I'm part elf, part human. I couldn't even tell you which part my birth mother was. It doesn't much matter." She pulls up the shawl once more.

"What matters is that I overstayed my welcome in my hometown of Tannisport. My mother--the one who cared for me--warned me as much. So I left. I've been trying to just figure out what to eat from one day to the next, but if we can get our hands on this reward, I won't have to worry about my next meal for quite a while!" The thought reminds her about the elf she had been chatting with earlier. She looks around but sees that Adair had departed. I'll have to look for him again, there's so much I want to learn about elves.

Descending down to the ground level again, Elise chuckles inside as Katze begins talking like a teammate. This is working out better than I could've hoped she thinks.

She leans in to speak to Top, alongside Katze. "Yes, can you tell us anything you know about Seaside Manor and its former inhabitant? Seems like the man died quite suddenly and had no immediate family."

Katze posted in the main thread, which makes sense enough given that we're still at the White Wolf. So I'll make a post or two there, with the goal of transitioning here.

Elise shakes the clerk's ink-stained hand. "Thank you, Master Longwood. We will gladly take care of this problem for you. Would you have any keys we could borrow for the manor? Also, may I suggest an advance on our fee, for supplies and the like? I imagine ten percent--30 gold for each of us--will be enough to get necessary supplies."

Elise accepts whatever amount of advance (if any) that Dirk is willing to pay, and then takes her leave.

Once they are far enough away to avoid being heard, Elise smirks at Katze. "I don't know the first thing about ghosts. But I'm willing to bet that the house isn't nearly as dangerous as he believes. We root out whatever the problem is, burn some sweet smelling incense to make the manor feel nice, and voila! Problem solved. Let's see what our bartender friend downstairs knows about the manor, and go from there."

"Make it 300 gold pieces each, and you'll have a deal," she suggests. She looks to Katze to see if her newfound companion feels the same way.

Flashing lights, the sound of wailing--maybe someone's squatting in the house? Good thing Katze is thinking about coming.

Elise gathers a pile of papers on a chair and sets it aside so she can sit down. She does the same with another pile to allow Katze to also join.

As she listens to the story, she can't help but have her doubts. "Haunted? How exactly is it haunted? Have you been there yourself to see the manor? This is a fascinating story, but I have a lot more questions about this haunted house, if you don't mind."

She pauses, and adds at an opportune moment. "If I may ask, how did your uncle pass? Is there any relationship to this haunted manor, or did the manor become haunted only after your uncle's passing? Is there any reason your uncle left his fortune to you, and not some other relative? You said you were surprised, so who were you expecting to inherit?"
