About Elise Emeria

As a baby, Elise appeared one evening at the steps of the Church of the Eight in Tannisport, a bustling fishing town named after the Valerian king that served as a gateway to New Valeria, particularly those who wanted to avoid the attention that one might attract in Redmont. Half human, half elf, she was apparently the unwanted child of an unexpected union between Valerian and elf. Her care fell naturally to Isabel Emeria, the local priestess of Nyah, nurturing goddess of the earth. As a strange curiosity, Elise grew up as an outsider. The children subjected her to ruthless teasing and bullying. The adults, meanwhile, mostly looked at her with pity. Elise relied on that pity, seeking to curry favor from adults, particularly the Elders of the Church of the Eight.

Elise was not the best student of the divine scriptures but she learned faith by her adoptive mother's side. As a priestess of Nyah, Isabel Emeria served as a healer for the village, combining knowledge, skill, and divine magic to fight illness and heal wounds. Elise, too, learned how to nurse others to health. But what she really wanted was to unlock magic. Her mother said she was too young, but the villagers always said that elves were unusually magical creatures. Elise was determined to prove them right. She would never forget the first time she healed someone--a farmer who had cut himself harvesting wheat. She was only 13. And she became something of a celebrity, as people wondered how a young girl could have such faith to channel divine power.

But as Elise's magical gifts grew, she quickly understood that her magic was not like others. While the clerics of the Eight relied on prayer, Elise called on something else. Suspicion grew among the clergy as they began to fear what they did not understand. One night, Elise's mother came into her room and awoke her. "Elise, you have to leave the church tonight. The Elders are calling for a meeting to talk about you. They are going to brand you as a heretic because of your magic!" Elise agreed, and giving her mom a final hug, made her escape with the aid of a friend and smuggler, who got her out of town discretely. He gave this parting advice. "Go south, Elise. If you cross the border into Ionian territory, you will be out of reach from the Church."

Now on the road, Elise's main priority was to survive and avoid capture. If she was truly a heretic now, her capture would mean being put on trial and probably burned. In her idle moments, she often wondered about the strange magic that had blessed and cursed her. Perhaps if she could learn its origins, she could somehow remove the label of heretic, earn back understanding and acceptance, and find her way back to the Church once more.
