Why not make a MMORPG that will follow the PFRPGD20 rules by the book? Yest the death rate would be high but it would be fun. Why did the now defunct PF Online change the rules? I think a by the book Pathfinder Online would rule.

Liberty's Edge

Strange I thought people would really respond to this topic more.

Liberty's Edge

Hmm a Podcast. Not a bad idea to get it started.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I was watching the show King of the Nerds.

Kinda good but there are so many ideas I have that would be so much better.

A gamer and GM reality show.

Imagine a group of around 21 or so gamers all put in a house just like a normal reality show BUT the twist is they are gamers.

Each team would have six players. There would be 3 teams or more each season.

There would also be three GMs who must be impartial and have to switch parties each week. Each GM would be controlled by an XP budget.

The host (Me! me! me! I will do it!) would be lead GM. He would direct the three or more team GMs.

PATHFINDER would be the preferred system as it can do everything one needs.

The show would in a fashion of performance art show them playing the game AND the interactions between the people and the players with really detailed minis and HUGE dioramas.

OR

Have them acting out the game in real life as in Gamers the Movie

OR

Have a very cool anime telling of the game.

A combination of all three!

Everyone would start out at level 1.

ONLY if your character died would you have to leave the show.

A very somber RP IC funeral would occur each time.

In a shared setting the GMs and parties could compete against each other.

Players would be allowed to betray their party and join another.

The winning GM would win a prize as well as the team AND the player with the most XP.

Each GM would have an XP budget so no none could cheat.

The interactions between the players, the story in the game, the competition itself would be a very interesting show to watch in my mind.

There could be times where the parties could come together and character death would be a real issue.

This show would cost very little to produce.

The GMs and the players would love to play in something like this.

It would be a very positive light on Tabletop RPGs.

What do you think?

IF you like this idea then share it on facebook and other social media.

I would love to see a show like this but I would really love to HOST a show like this.

Liberty's Edge

I grew up and still live in Southwest Louisiana. I started with the EO boxed set and from there we played mostly Basic D&D.

I do remember my Church of the Nazarene preacher talking against it and my mom questioning me about it but I assured her it was not satanic. My preacher, I offered to let him borrow my Basic D&D rulebook but he would not and I lost a great amount of respect for him after that.

I did hear about the larger Baptist church down the road having mass book burning of AD&D books and heavy metal albums and cassettes.

There was the one kid (an AD&D player) that began to totally hate church after they burnt his gamebooks.

Pretty much there was talk about it being satanic but we gamers knew that was stupid.

I would have to say being the short kid that was picked on terribly, RPGs saved my life. I can't think of how bad it would have been without that escape from all the bullies and jerks in the world.

A satanic panic sure is good for sales though!

I suggest from past experiences to start your wold small and from there go outward. Using an 8.5 x 11 Copy Paper page with each square inch being five square miles works great. You can start with the base town and wilderness and go outward from there adding to the map one page at a time.

Liberty's Edge

Why not have your monsters start doing crazy things to the Players? Have an orc throw pepper or hot coals in the face of the fighter! The goblin could kick the rogue in the nuts! The ogre could use the halfling as a club! The players will soon get crazy as well!

Liberty's Edge

Would a fantasy version of your own hometown be a cool idea?
Try this conversion and see what you come up with!
My setting converted Lake Charles, LA into a fantasy city.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzYaSvmA-OpUQ3NHVXRSUG1Bdkk/edit?usp=shari ng

Lake Charlemagne Core Rules
A Pathfinder/3.5 OGL Experiment 2013
Version 2.0
1.Take your current modern city’s population and divide it by 10. This is your fantasy city’s current population. Name it a similar name if it can be. For instance Lake Charles, LA where this campaign started was changed to Lake Charlemagne, New Orleans to Saint Orleans, Alexandria stayed Alexandria because that is just a cool name.

2. Use the standard method for character creation. Standard races and classes unless allowed by the GM. Get some players. Be honest. We may have to go to a 20 pt buy of Attributes, but for now it will be standard 4d6 rolls take away the lowest place them where you want.

3. Now start creating maps based off of real world geography. Use most of your main streets and
waterways. If living in dangerous areas, the cities need to be walled. Many of the bridges can be
replaces by ferry crossings although huge bridges and landmarks should be converted into gigantic
ruins. Add in the demi-human races and their areas. For instance in forested areas and parks add elves
and gnomes. Any rocky areas add Dwarves and such. Don’t forget to add areas where the foul
humanoids live. The world has to be still untamed. Try and contact other gaming groups in other cities
to form more Lake Charlemagne groups. AT one point in time have a war with the other cities or a
huge grand adventure with multiple DMs and Players.

4. We will use the Pathfinder or any other OGL 3.5 rulebooks at first and go from there.

5. Every Player and GM MUST contribute
to the setting by writing up at least a shop or
building in the setting. Yes the players help
write the game making it more theirs.
Remember to not go too far.

6. Other Rules. Time units and Calendar.
There are 365 days in a year. Unless the
players want to write up a special calendar
then we will use the standard earth calendar,
as in days of the week and names of the
month. There will be 365 time units that a
character must spend as he plays. One day
equals 1 time unit. A week is 7 time units.
The starting day of the first official game
will be Jan. the 1st . Year unknown until we
come up with a story.

7. Use all of your old favorite characters
from ages and editions past! If they died then
put them in a graveyard. If the characters are
still alive then convert them or use them as
NPCs. Rehash old villains from games long
ago and have them come back. You could
even have a next generation of players come
back as well.

8. Is Odd Earth a good name for the world?

9. New Skills, Feats, Classes, and Rule Variants in general will be judged very harshly. If your idea is
rejected go rewrite it and then resubmit it. We are not trying to write rules we are trying to create a
setting with the rules as the framework.

10. Any artwork, poetry, and adventures will be used if possible with full credit given to it’s creator.

11. This has to be the campy old school type of gaming mixed with the new rules.

12. None of this setting is set in stone and many parts have been deliberately left out so YOU can add
to the setting!

13. The plan is to have local organized gaming with one system and multiple groups that can add to the
setting. This would also be cool for Convention play.

14. Hopefully this could be expanded to other neighboring cities and huge games could be played like
in the 70s during the dawn of RPGs.

I have a house rule which is no house rules. Even though the rules can be too much they are pretty much perfected. At the same time I have moments of rules hate because of all the work it takes to run it.

Liberty's Edge

No not at all. It depends on how you build your fighter.

The trait: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/campaign-traits/mummy-s-mask/trap-finder

But the character IS not a Rogue so with that trait come the painful lesson because he was not sneaky enough to "get away with it" like a rogue would.

Unlike a Rogue this Player has a few people out to get him such as damaged parties or a Thieves Guild who is looking for a free agent in their territory.

Never just give a player an advantage for free. Make them always pay for it with a great story with complications.

Liberty's Edge

Use a Feat to gain a weapon proficiency.

I would not worry too much about the build. I would make sure my fighter is a part of a good story and the mechanics would be secondary.

Hey sorry for the long time delay in response but I was working 7 nights a week for the last few months. I have a few people that want to play Pathfinder and some old school gaming but we just have not got together. Look up Lake Area Gamers on Facebook and join.

SO did this ever happen? I live here in Ragley north of Lake Charles. I would like to get a few people to roll some dice! Got a Pathfinder fantasy version of Lake Charles as well that I would love people to help flesh out as well.

I would try Labyrinth Lord with the Advanced Edition Companion.

IT is the Basic rules with the Advanced option tacked on.

Liberty's Edge

Play it for the role playing, not the mechanics.

Liberty's Edge

Let them find out as they adventure. Notes and scrawlings on pieces of paper IF they look with the history of the place. Make the place seem like it was once alive. Don't make it a monster hotel. Have different tribes, factions, food sources, multiple ways in and out, maps that take up more than one piece of paper. Many levels deep! Other mysteries that the diggers of the dungeons found that were already there underground!

Liberty's Edge

Give the party some interesting NPCs. It won't be that hard to run them along with the adventure. NPCs have always been how we survived in the old days.

Liberty's Edge

AH Megadungeons!

First of all make sure that the dungeon HAD an original purpose. For instance my Megadungeon was originally a shelter from some sort of cataclysm. A city underground. Then something went wrong!

Make the Dungeon seem alive. The doors don't work for players unless you spike them. Noises, whispers, footsteps, moans, and other sounds.

Have different factions and monsters inhabit sections of the Megadungeon. Many of them have to allow the other to live to survive the more deadly monsters below that come up when hungry! Have underground farms, ranches, and ponds that grow food as well as a trading center that is neutral ground!

Multiple pieces of graph paper! Labeled 1A, 1B, 1C, and such. I have had over 100 rooms per level!

Make there be more than one way in. Fireplaces, collapsed roofs that are now waterfalls, Rotten holes in the roof that go many levels down but are deadly to climb on, an atrium for plant growth, instead of just one way in. If the place is alive the fireplaces will be burning!

Make it ancient with old cryptic writing. Have the sad tale of what happened in books and in graffiti on the walls.

Make it haunted with eerie things that are not combat just creepy. Pictures that look like the players being mutilated, statues that move and contort when the players are not looking, harmless but scary looking ghost! Creep the players out!

Have some devices and door be only opened by Magic Users and such.

History and Lore would be very important and can make a spell caster very fun to play if he is also the brain of the group.

Have safe places for the characters to heal!

Have Prisoners and such for Character replacements!

As soon as a Megadungeon has gold brought back to town there will be MANY NPC Parties Adventurer or not trying to get the gold. They can be more dangerous than monsters and a good story.

As they get deeper make it connect to the Mythic Underworld. Another world underground!

See the Mythic Underworld Rules by Philotomy
http://www.grey-elf.com/philotomy.pdf

Look up Stonehell as well. It will inspire you! Really good free download of Level 1!

If you get the dungeon going please post it on Goggle Docs or something so we can enjoy!

The Druids took from both Cleric and Magic User Spell List until they came out with a Druid.

Well I played Basic D&D back in the day around 1981 and I did roll 1 HP for a high strength fighter. He had to run around with a bow until second level where he rolled and 8! I had 9 HPs at 2nd level! I never had so much fun outsmarting monsters and surviving until 2nd level. I got killed the very next adventure at 2nd level.

That was the old days.

Now the rules say you get Max at 1st level. I am an Old School Dogmatist but a rule is a rule.

So there are groups out there where everyone at the table Role Plays very well and Optimizes their character and the game rules and kicks @$$?

Well If I can't find a group like that I will try and form a group like that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Where I am at and where I am coming from is this sad story.

I am returning to Pathfinder after a long sad quest to find and or create the perfect RPG experience for Old School and New School players.

I made a Fantasy Heartbreaker. See the Forge website for the article on what a "Fantasy Heartbreaker" is.

IMHO PFRPG is the most awesome and complete system ever made while it is also the most clunky overdone set of rules for everything as well.

But still once one would learn it all and become an expert then it would be a breeze.

I was a part of the OSR before 4th edition that I played for a year and a half and was still a part of the OSR after I quit playing 4th edition.

I had left 3.5 in disgust after a rules lawyer, min-maxer, bad role player, and such destroyed our game. He never cheated he just used the rules to gain all advantages and would "accidentally" always be the star of the show. He completely had every single rule memorized without fail. He was never a prick but his actions always turned out that way because he would by the book lay out every monster. We turned to 4th edition and he left the group because he could not min max his characters.

For the player PFRPG is the best possible system to make a character and really get into it, AND it does a way better job than 3.5 ever did by juts a few simple changes. I have only actually played PFRPG a few times and must say more fun that any other system out there fantasy wise save WHRPG 1st Edition. I was playing a Wizard Necromancer and it did not suck.

For the GM it has every tool at your disposal. It just takes time until you learn all of the rules to make any kind of NPC and Monster when compared to the much lighter rules from long ago. I did not like running it as I had converted a huge old school dungeon from Labyrinth Lord to Pathfinder and due to working out of town did not have time to convert it over.

The players loved it. I loved it at first but could not keep up with it as I was working out of town in an internet dead zone. Plus with only 3 players a megadungoen gets really lame. It's something that needs at least 8 or more players.

SO I went back to my Old School Renaissance games and kept working on mine. What I was doing was basically what D&D Next is doing. Right about when I got done with my rules D&D Next was announced.

I got very little to no response towards my game.

Most of all the OSR people who claimed they wanted a game that was Old School Simple yet had the options of Modern RPGs did not respond. I decided after one night of heavy drink in my Mead Hall/ Gaming Building that I was going to shelve my game.

What was the perfect system out there? At that time the Pathfinder Core Rulebook somehow fell of the shelf and landed in font of me. Damn corner is bent now.

The people at Pazio and most of the Pathefinder Players really love the system and have fun with it.

Because of that I am going to give it another chance.

I guess I am going to have to run the games. I decided to go back with my fantasy version of Lake Charles, LA called Lake Charlemagne.

It was one of the most fun for everyone settings that I ever ran. So be gentle on me I am just returning to PFRPG and plan to have many monster die!

Liberty's Edge

Whoa! Did not mean to start a fire!

I have mostly experienced players who were one way or the other.

I have realized my error that some of the more role playing sorts were taking the advantages just in the confines of the story now that I think about it.

The other players were just being bad players/jerks. I would use another word but this is a family website.

I would love to find a perfect gametable where everyone followed the story AND used the rules to form a perfect game.

I personally punish the pure min-maxer (that is also a bad player) that only thinks of himself at the table if possible.

Liberty's Edge

So do you play your character in Role Play style or do you only think of how to max it out in Rule Play style, only taking the best combat advantages?

=

Are the games you run a collection of battles or does it have a very deep story and such?

Do you ever use the Sandbox method where there are encounters you cannot beat and you must run away if your party runs in to them?

Liberty's Edge

Liberty's Edge

There would be no advantage to do it but for story and Role Play reasons it would be cool. Like for instance the Large Bastard Sword was from her father who took it form an Ogre that was a general for an army that had attacked their village.

Yes.

I'd like to see that. On a 20 point buy, you can barely manage one 18, which already eats 17 of your 20 points, and you can only buy stats down to 7. To get 2 18s you'd have [18,18,8,7,7,7], which isn't particularly good for any class.

Also, crunching the numbers, 3d6 gives between a 3 and 5 point buy, depending on how you price scores below 7. 4d6 gives about 19 points in any case since such scores are much rarer. So a 20 point buy will, on average, be a slightly better deal than rolling 4d6, though there's always someone that will roll really well.

Our group actually used 20 point buy for our next game since it'll be an AP. The time before that we had everyone roll 4d6 then we could all choose whichever of those sets we wanted. (Of course, everyone took the one really good roll. I don't have the numbers on me, but it was probably worth 30+ points.)

Oh sorry I left that was along with the ability to buy magic items as well below the GP limit. These same said players did an all encompassing break the game by using the rules fairly as written. I at least see it harder to do that in Pathfinder. BUT some players like to only max their characters out at the expense of the story.

3d6 or point buy the point is to have fun.

Liberty's Edge

TriOmegaZero: Good articles and good points. Looking around I did not realize that the Primer had caused such a debate. Many good points but GM Fiat and GM Rules all work great if the GM does not suck. Each play style has it's well style. Not defending any just saying try them all.

Alceste008: I have rolled many totally terrible throw away characters but I played them anyway and was the star of the show many times. One character in the 2nd edition era was named Veenger. He had all low rolls except a Str of 11. His Cha was like 8. ALl other rolls were average to below average.

HE also rolled the lowest you could roll on money.

HE had a barrel of pickled herring, a sword, and leather armor maybe a few other items. He talked like Dorff.

The two other fighters had 18/45 and 18/87 both fairly rolled in or sight btw. With my weak sniveling fighter I had more fun calling the two fighters corn fed and beef fed wenches! They tried to kill me or make "accidents" happen to me but I always survived. This loser made it all the way to around 4th level before banging on a Wizard's door too hard setting off explosive runes that killed him.

Liberty's Edge

It all comes down to having fun. I can and will play any edition that someone is running. Reading over many of your comments I see than most of you have never played "old school" gaming and are mystified. If ran properly it can really be a great experience. Just be prepared to die.

Always the feeling of danger and death around the corner. Stay with me I have ADD!

As CrankyRWMage described from the OD&D book from 1974 (or Swords and Wizardry Whitebox which is FREE to download!)

http://www.swordsandwizardry.com/WhiteBox3p.pdf

There were only three classes. In some version the Dwarf, Elf, and Halflings were Race as Class.

I know many of you are saying "Why would I want to play some old worn out system that has not been in print since the 70s and 80s?"

Why do people fix up and drive vintage cars? Because they, although "outdated" have a certain charm and can go VROOM!

The thing is on an index card or piece of paper you can whip up a character in five minutes or less and start playing. Also roll up at least three characters. You play one at a time but they die easily.

Make sure and hire at least five NPCs per player for cannon fodder. In old school games it was easy for a DM to run huge combats with five players that have 10-20 NPCs hired against a huge room full of 30 goblins and never slow down.

Sniff Cry SO SO many NPCs have died!

Granted not as detailed as a Pathfinder but it's a different style of play.

If you have not tried old school then try it. Look up A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming. How did anyone survive without a thief? I started with the original Red Box so we had thieves so this was a cool read for me!

http://www.lulu.com/shop/matthew-finch/quick-primer-for-old-school-gaming/e book/product-3159558.html

It's free as well. Don't stop playing Pathfinder though.

I suggest you find some old neckbeard grognard and let him run a game for you. You might be surprised how good it is but in a different way than Pathfinder.

There are other Old School clones that are free PDFs as well such as OSRIC which is AD&D. Labyrinth Lord which is Basic D&D (A.K.A. The REAL Red Box!) and a few others if you look around.

Me, I enjoy the evolution that has occurred from simple to the very finely tuned D20 (After Pazio got a hold of it and made it so much better that 3.5) and I hope to see it constantly evolving BUT I also like the quick and dirty simpler rules with the flow.

Liberty's Edge

What would you think of 3d in order and switch one attribute with the other otherwise an organic character.

I have seen players use the rules especially with point buy make some pure min maxed characters that were great for them but buy the rules broke the game for the GM and the rest of the players. Granted this was in 3.5 D&D. Question! Can you do the dame thing in Pathfinder?

Having looked over the rules it seems that Pazio has plugged the leaks and made all the characters excellent.

I must admit I love playing Pathfinder but hate running it for the most part.

Liberty's Edge

You guys really need to try some "Dogma" Role Playing.

Old AD&D is perfect for this as there is a random Dungeon creator.

Osric an OGL AD&D clone that is FREE will work great for this as well as it too has a random dungeon generator in the back of the book.

Roll 3d6 in order and keep what you get. Play the best class for what is rolled or not!

Roll ONCE for your hit points and keep what you get no matter how low.

Roll your money! Buy stuff! Finish your character and start playing.

Make at least three characters (or more!) as they die like flies! Save or Die! You are dead at "0" Hit Points. No negative hit points!

When your character dies the next character is found in the next room as a prisoner.

The GM gives no mercy. Whatever the dice roll is what happens on the random monster chart. Traps everywhere.

Think of Unreal Tournament in a fantasy RPG format.

It's okay to have a story but the primary reason for a "Dogma" RPG game is to kill monsters and get treasure.

There are various objectives in a "Dogma" RPG game.

Who can survive the longest.
How many times you die a night.
Best Death.
Quickest Death!
Funniest Death
Kill Rate
Most Treasure as 1GP = 1XP
First person to make it to Second Level
First Person to Make it to Third Level (and so on)

Try this form or "early" role playing in the Endless Dungeon of Death. You might just be surprised how fun it is.

Liberty's Edge

Back in the day 3d6 in order was the order.

Throwing a toddler temper tantrum? Geez some gamers need to get a life. The Game Master is the boss of the table as that is rule 0 as set down by the Old School Masters back long ago! GO FORTH FROM MY TABLE IN SHAME FOR YE ARE NOT WELCOME! HA HA!

I figure most players have never really played the deadly low stat, low hit point, save or die world of old school gaming. It's amazing how well we did with all those disadvantages. It's just more exciting for me because despite low stats I almost always survived! YEAH!

I always imagined the jocks and bullies were the monsters and villains I was fighting and I was kicking their @$$!

I took what the dice gave me and I had fun. It was fun NOT having the most heroic character though sometimes I DID roll a good one I always preferred the underdog character.

Why?

Every game was a challenge and an adventure. Eery time we played and old school roll 3d6 in order type of game it was hell to survive bit most of us did. It was hard to level up as well as many of us played throughout high school and only went up to 6th level.

A score of 18 meant something! Now it's just another score in an unending line of progression.

The DM was a fantastic story teller as well and we had the best of times. I can't say I have experienced any of the old school vibe in any of the new games as you can die but it's really hard too.

In the 3d6 in olden era of gaming 0 HPs was dead as there was no negative HPs and troll like healing BUT it also took five minutes to roll a character.

Point buying is okay but it always makes boring cookie cutter characters every time.

Actually there is an RPG on LULU called 3d6 in order! Look it up!
http://www.lulu.com/shop/richard-tongue/3d6-in-order/paperback/product-1895 4562.html

Heh! Looks cool!

P.S. Honestly a negative Int in PFRPG/3.5 is a disadvantage of epic proportions that will handicap a character permanently and Int should not be the only source of skill points.

What do you think?

As much as some people would love to go back to the days of 2E, where a monster stat block could be fit in 2 lines, the game would be boring very quickly when the PCs are fighting cookie-cutter monsters whose only difference is their AC, attack bonus, and hp and maybe a special ability.

Well back in the 2E (and 1E, Basic, and 0E) monsters were very simple and it worked fine just a different style of play. Don't get me wrong with the explanations here I am warming back up to the big ol stat block just as long as it never becomes like 4th which I played until a few months ago. I hate combats that last all night. I like in the old days making it through 10-20 encounters a night. AT least with Pathfinder you still can make a megadungeon! You can with 4th but it would take years to go through.

Liberty's Edge

OR a 2 part card or even three.

It would take away the work a GM has to do don't you think?

I would favor a bigger than regular card format myself but not too big.

With a sheet about 10 minutes max. Without longer.

Pathfinder Monster Cards

It would be really great to have the monster (and NPCs) stats on a regular sized card or larger.

Think about it. You write your adventure and select your monsters for your adventure and pick out your monster cards.

They could be separated by CR.

Thanks so much for all of your answers. Seems like a very mature and polite group over here.

Why do the monsters have a complete character stats/sheet? Not to start any kind of flame war at all BUT when I run PFRPG it is a task! Has there ever been any though on simplifying monsters? It would make is much easier to run and write adventures.
