You rolling streamlines the game a lot more. When I'm running a game I roll for people when something will or will not happen depending on there roll but not otherwise. For example if someone is sneaking up on the PCs I'll make their perception checks so I can get on with the encounter but if someone needs to make a knowledge (local) check to see if they remember the name of some traveling minstrel then that's there job to roll.

I couldn't help but over hear someone talking about him. Doran repeats what he heard from the conversation. Now I wouldn't generally want to get involved in something like this, but eating children? That needs to be dealt with.

Doran looks very awkward standing taller than everyone and taking up so mush space. He makes his way over to the table and grabs a drink. Never was one for parties.
