I like naming the prime items (usually weapons) for my characters. I like thinking that my +1 sword is not just a +1 sword. It is 'Smoothtongue' the weapon that slew the goblin chief 'Razzledill'.
Of course it depends on the character. Some characters will speak of their weapons often, others almost never.

My Taldan Scholar and Swordsman, the Viscount Ottavio, wields a +4 falcata of the finest quality named "Even'star". Don't ask him if you can borrow Even'star.

My Hellknight Signifer, Balah, wields a +1 Merciful cold iron scimitar (he's Qadiran originally) named "The Sharp Tongue of Law" and talks about it endlessly. Both Hellknight and weapon uphold the Law.

My Crusader or Iomedae, Valard, wields a +1 adamantine longsword named "Resolution", but his +1 mithril dagger, "Beacon", is almost as well known amongst his companions. Beacon typically has light cast on it and ends up at the bottom of a pit.

Named weapons and items can add character to an adventurer. It can be overdone, but overall I like the idea. It gives the character more ownership of their items, a closer connection to them and generally more fun in the game. It can help to define who that character is and what he stands for.

I'm not sure about naming a headband. I can't imagine the connection to it being like that to a weapon. But, or course, each to their own.

Myffany wrote:

"Indeed, Cordelia, indeed. I have already had more than several words with Ottavio on these counts, as well as that of his 'obsession' with the dead god Aroden, and his hesitancy toward finding a lady of suitable standing to grace his household in marriage.

I believe that what was actually meant by Ottavio's curiously worded invitation was that it would be a 'themed' party revolving around Arodenite culture and that while he asks to not display other holy symbols, to be in keeping with the party's theme, that we could surely still carry or wear such symbols underneath our costumes. I informed Ottavio that my symbol of Shelyn would remain close to my heart at all times, and that if he truly wished to remove it, it had best be his hand alone that attempts to pluck it from my bosom!

I fully intend to attend this party as Ottavio is a dear friend of mine, and of late I have become concerned about his growing 'eccentric' nature. I also believe that sometimes the touch of the petals of the Eternal Rose must come, even to those who choose to not enter her garden.

With affection,

Lady Myffany Salvania, High Priestess of Shelyn"

Oh Ladies

Both Myffany and Cordelia. I would be terribly disappointed if either of you did not attend this celebration. I agree to relax my rules, so of course you may carry your symbols, but please keep them to yourselves. My rule is intended to ensure that nobody can be offended by the religion of another. I merely want to have a pleasant, friendly celebration.

I have again been busy. There seem so many matters to deal with now. In truth I have been fighting demons in the Worldwound. Not something I would choose to speak to much about in pleasant company. Let it suffice to say that they were not a match for the Viscount Ottavio and his companions.

Please attend my celebration and I will ensure that both of you are suitably treated as honoured guests and my personal friends. Your goddess Shelyn has always been a favorite of mine. Nonetheless, in the important business of diplomacy, one cannot afford to play favorites. I'm sure you can understand.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Lovingly yours

Congratulations Andrei

No problem with your pet hates in PFS. There will always be plenty of others to chime in with their views.

And I think that it's always interesting to see your views stated even if I don't share them.

I look forward to seeing Andrei styled posts as V-L.

Hi Grick

I like your reasoning. I do have a reason to think otherwise and that is just that a GM and friend of mine thinks that the wording does not imply that you add a trait for taking the Adopted trait.

I guess if I were to look at it immediate does not imply extra. As with so many parts of the rules, the wording is strange.

Anyway, as you say, the James Jacobs words help to explain the intent which seems to be adding flavor to a character.

Thanks for finding those James Jacobs posts.

Are the James Jacobs posts official rulings on this trait?

I guess I wondered if anybody Paizo ever ruled on the Adopted trait. If it lets you have a race trait without choosing it as your second trait then doesn't it really mean that anybody can take a race trait from another race at no real additional cost?

Why not just say in the trait rules that you can take any race trait from another race and justify it by saying that your character was adopted. Why bother to create a quasi-trait to justify a rules matter?

And then with the adopted trait, does it count as one of your two traits? In which case I would only have Adopted and Operatic. Which is ok, but I am wondering about options.

The race traits in Humans of Golarion give the races as the racial group - Chelaxian for example. Does that mean that only Chelaxian Humans can take that trait? What about a Chelaxian Half-Orc?

The trait I am interested in is Operatic (from Humans of Golarion) for a Half-Orc bard. Nice trait. But is it legal for a non-human (or half-human) of Chelaxian blood.

Congratulations Al

Well done and well deserved.

I think that both Stpehen and Al have done a lot for we players here in Oz, not to diminish the efforts of the many other contributors. Good job. I look forward to PaizoCon Oz 2014.

Great to see Mike Brock in Oz this year too. Good job Mike, and nice to meet you in person.

Hi all

There is a player in our group who uses a Scorpion Whip. The description in UC is quite vague about its use.

Some players suggest that Exotic Wpn Prof - Whip is enough to use either Whip or Scorpion WHip. Others say that if you have Exotic Wpn Prof - Scorpion WHip you can use it as a 5' reach 1D4 weapon with the performance special and you can only unlock the 15' range and trip etc by also taking Exotic Wpn Prof - Whip.

Two feats or one. I'm confused and have to GM this player soon. I've looked back over old threads and found no clear answer to how this weapon works.

Cheers

Deluge

My Dear Goldfrapp

Joining an army is not for everybody. Many Taldans serve Taldor in other more sophisticated ways. The army is a fine vocation for the right sort of fellow. Of course, I myself am a scholar and pursue scholarly pursuits. Although it is true I am a dab hand with a Falcata also, but that is merely the prerogative of nobility. I bear the magestic weapon Even'star.
I hope that you jest when you speak of your nakedness. Firstly you may catch a chill in the wrong season in Taldor. But secondly my friend, dress yourself in the finest of fashions. Parade you stylish suit, not your birthday suit. Find a wig that suits and marvel in the improvement to your appearance.
So my friend, I assure you that as you suggest, I will claim much in the name of Taldor, and will do so dress in the finest clothing and with panache and zest. Your spirit in this endeavour has the potential to cover us all (especially your nakedness) in Taldan flags and glory.

Yours

Viscount Ottavio Emilior

Well done Stephen.

You've been Mr Pathfinder round here for a while anyway.

Enjoy the star. Coffee's on me.

This one is a tough one. Personally I hate when meta-gaming detracts from the experience of the game. So to me nobody knows their hit point number, but that doesn't mean that they have no idea of their condition.

I like to suggest that players use a CLW approach to this. I suggest to players that they might have a light wound, a moderate wound, a serious wound or a critical wound. Of course just conscious sounds ok too. This way they indicate how wounded they are instead of stating a HP number which detracts a bit from the game for me.

Once someone is unconscious, there is really nothing they should say about their status. Hopefully their friend will get to them quickly. It is tough to be the character dying and say nothing as you bleed out. The best thing is for the character to have good friends who act fast.

Some unconscious characters seem to talk a lot (and truthfully I am not an innocent here).

Elyas I have had a Taldor Faction character for a while now (he is 11th level) and all I can say is that faction missions need all sorts of skills. I guess it depends on what the writers are thinking is appropriate for a Taldor mission.

I think the diplomat concept should fit in nicely as a Taldor character. I would suggest skills like sleight of hand, intimidate, bluff. Your traits sound appropriate, but I would always say, choose fun over features, and I think your character sounds fun.

My Taldor character masquerades (this is not re-skinning) as a Scholar. He is a Rogue of course. Scholar is his cover and alter-ego. So he has Knowledge skills (always great for PFS) and Linguistics (IMHO under-utilised in PFS) and the Charisma based Rogue skills. That seemed a pretty good starting point to me.

Bottom line, you can't have everything and you won't always have the right skill for every mission. Sometimes you will fail a mission (and that is character building).

Good luck with your character's brother's Pesh problem.

Thanks to GMs and Players at PaizoCon Oz this year. It was great. The people are the ones who make the event.

It's great to catch up with gamers, some of whom I see just once a year (and others I see more often). Everything seemed to go very well. The venue staff were very accommodating which helped too, and we seemed to find good coffee and good food which was great.

Thanks to Stephen fr running everything (of course). I hope to see the same faces next year and hopefully some new ones.

2/5

Sounds good Stephen

Let's hope the numbers keep rising before the start of PaizoConOz. I hope that Qantas doesn't cause too much disruption.

I'm really looking forward to some warmer weather in Brisbane and a great gaming experience. Melbourne weather is too up and down.

Roll on PaizoConOz players. See you there.

Unicon is over now and it was great and the Pathfinder was bigger than past years.

Thanks Stephen (Venture Captain) for making things happen and running one nice high-level table to get some of us that much closer to 12th level.

The game I GMed was good fun so thanks to the players at my table and all attendees. It was great to see some newcomers.

Now, roll on Paizo Con Oz 2011 in Brisbane next weekend (Thursday to Sunday). I am really looking forward to this. Good to warm up for it this weekend.

2/5

I guess we all have opinions. I'm there for the role-playing, not the combat challenge. That being said, a good, hard fight can be role-playing fun and challenge.

My character died in our most recent offering - Song of the Sea Witch - the encounter was tough, but circumstances can dictate a death at a table. That being said, we had just been discussing how much tougher the newer mods had been.

Personally I don't want to play games where all characters are created to be destroyers of life. As for dumb combat tactics, a dumb character is likely dumb in combat. A foolish character is likely foolish in combat. I'd like to see dump stats played, not ignored.

I think that games I have played are tough enough for me (and my characters).

2/5

Yep. I'm looking forward to this weekend.

Hopefully we'll get some new enthusiastic gamers.

JP Thanks for replying.

You say that having the title is irrelevant (to having Hellknight armor), but in the Faction Guide there was a way to have Hellknight armor without levels in Hellknight PrC. The armor seems definitive for Hellknights and would be nice for characterisation.

You are right, I can just come up with a RP reason why I have the armor, but then at some tables the GM will be ok and at others the GM will be unhappy with it. My character is very lawful and would never wear Hellknight armor without a legal, lawful reason. He would rather have other armor. Your parade armor sounds a nice idea.

Things like Hellknight armor are just great Golarion flavor to me. Having a restriction on its use or availability adds to the mystique which is great. But if the restriction is so strict then the flavor is lost. I think it sounds fair that if you have the Hellknight title that you should be permitted to wear Hellknight armor, but that is just my opinion. I'm interested in the opinions of other potential Hellknights.

Without clarification, I think I will just go in a different direction regarding armor with this character.

2/5

(Slightly OT: I cannot fathom how spending 5PP for an adamantine wayfinder is a remotely good decision. It suppose if you're on the cusp of 12th and have enough left over for multiple Raise Dead....)

I think it's a good decision if that's what you think your character would have. It isn't all about utility and benefit.

2/5

Thanks for replying Bob.

I am just interested in what people feel is reasonable for a Hellknight-aimed character given that it seems that the title Hellknight can be held by someone with no levels in the Prestige Class.

From a role-playing point of view, I don't want my character to wear Hellknight armor if it is not appropriate for him. Like anyone considering joining the Hellknights, he is a stickler for the rules. I don't know if he will ever takes levels in Hellknight prestige class, but he is Cheliax faction and he will use PP to buy into the Hellknights when he gets to 40 Fame. I would like him to wear Hellknight armor regardless of the fact that it is mechanically the same as full plate. It's flavor - Golarion flavor.

From a game mechanics point of view, I want to buy a suit of armor for the character and start to add enhancements to it. I would like this to be Hellknight armor. It will be frustrating to buy a different suit of armor, pay for enhancements and then sell that when I have 2 levels of Hellknight just to buy Hellknight armor and enhance it up the same way. At the moment he is an Armiger in the Hellknights (from spending PP). Do Hellknight Armigers wear Hellknight armor? Are they permitted by the Hellknight code?

Who wrote Hellknights into Golarion? Perhaps he could help me. Who wrote the Prestige Class? I guess my question is only in-character flavor, but if Hellknights are available in PFS then we should play by the same rules (very important for Lawful Hellknights).

2/5

Since the release of the Pathfinder Society Field Guide (which is excellent IMHO) Cheliax faction members can purchase ranks in the Hellknights with their PP. The Hellknight Prestige class seems to imply that Hellknight Armor can't be purchased until 2nd level in that prestige class. In the Faction Guide there is provision for someone with the rank Hellknight to buy Hellknight Armor. Is it reasonable to assume that if you achieve Hellknight Rank in the Cheliax faction Fame awards then you can purchase it even if you have no levels in the prestige class?
I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is there a rule for Pathfinder Society with regard to rank in the Hellknights and being able to buy and wear Hellknight armor (at least legally within Cheliax law)?

I hear the talk of not having alignment in PFS, but I actually have grown to like alignment. Most people don't use it as a straightjacket, but it can aid to define where your character stands on matters. And for most (non-paladin etc) characters if you aren't happy where you are then you can change without consequence.

D&D has always had alignment and at first I questioned it and felt it made things difficult, but over time I've changed my mind. Alignment helps me to characterise who my character is. It is just one tool regarding characterisation, but a useful one.

As for table disruption and removal, that is another issue. But let's not talk of removing alignment because some people should be asked to leave a table because they are disruptive.

Also I like the moral quandary about my faction sometimes. I like my character having an inner conflict regarding alignment and faction mission sometimes (not all the time). Again I find that it aids me in understanding and characterising my character. He has joined a group (faction) because they share some of his beliefs, but sometimes they ask him to act against his beliefs.

These challenges make PFS a better organised play campaign. I know it's hard in organised play, but I'd like to see more of this. When I GM though I have definitely dealt with some disruptive players, and truthfully I am just not always sure what is the best course of action. Why can't we all just have fun together?

The evilometer is fun. (and by the way kicking cats is evil, and cats are vengeful)

2/5

Yeah I've seen players have problems with the hit point calculation too.

And I guess that makes the point. If players get their character hit points wrong with a fixed number per level, then it seems sensible to have a fixed number for companion hit points too.

2/5

I just tried the faction link near the additional resources link and see that it only shows the five older factions. Nothing on the new factions yet. I just wondered if this was an oversight.

2/5

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Hi Neil, I appreciate that you have responded to this thread.

It is not a sexy thread, but a basic one. I have numerous times checked the hit points of animal companions and eidolons when (as GM) I have ben suspicious and I have found them calculated using many formulae - too often incorrect. What seems simple still causes some confusion.

If we used the PC Table 2-2 formula for companion hit points, the difference at 12th level would be 6 hit points, which if fairly insignificant, but I think then most players would get it right. Naming the numbers 4 and 5 is not as simple as a fixed number per level. What works for players would most likely work for their companions.

2/5

Ok for me to be clear, I wrote this after reading the PFS FAQ, so I do see that there are not actual 1/2 hit points. The problem remains that these rounding issues are something that PC characters don't have to deal with, excepting if they have an Eidolon or Companion.

I appreciate too that monsters and NPCs don't get the PFS Table 2-2 progression. I am just expressing my thought that in general PCs don't have to deal with rounding half hit points, but when they have an Eidolon or Companion they do.

The game is about the PCs, and their companions are a class feature and a part of who they are. I'm not a great fan of classes with companions, but since they exist, I think that the simple rules for PCs should apply. But I'm just stating a view, not saying right or wrong. Things work well when kept simple for players.

2/5

Hi all

I have no idea what might have been said in the past on this topic.

In PFS, why don't Animal Companions and Eidolons use the same formula as characters for hit points? I have just been reading the FAQ on this issue.

Average hit points is ok, but involves a half point every second level. Obviously this sort of thing has been avoided for characters' hit points to make things simple.

To be clear, I am not suggesting that these creatures should have max hit points at first level, but that the hit points be calculated without the 0.5 so that it is the same amount to be added each level. Table 2-2 in the Guide to Organised Play shows the way of course.

To my thinking, in an organised play campaign, simplicity is the best way to avoid confusion. If it is simplified for characters, why not simplify in the same way for companions.

2/5

I think every class can be played to cheese monkey extremes. Still, plenty of players don't cheese their characters.

The summoners that I most appreciate are the ones with a theme. I created an Ulfen summoner with a wolf-like and raven-like eidolon called Howlfur. I have emulated a wolf with the Eidolon's evolutions (and deliberately avoided pounce). I think of the Eidolon as an extension of the character, but with its own identity.

I like the Eidolon idea that you mention of the old Shoanti spirit that follows you. I presume that the character is Shoanti too. Sounds cool. See how it goes.

I don't roll my eyes when a summoner joins the table, but if one is cheesed out then I'll roll my eyes just like i would with a cheesed out character of any other class.

I don't know the answer to the weapon feat or evolution question.

No I don't think so. It's all in how you read it. There's no "because" in his post. Go easy on the guy.

I find most players don't keep their allegience secret (for many reasons). It is hard to maintain the illusion of secrecy once you have adventured with the same people for a while. No excuses though, I like the idea of secret factions, but I accept the reality of matters.

JP

I'm not sure what the emphasis on Paladin is here. Paladins have a code and severe alignment restriction. In that way they are likely to feel more bound in their actions. I don't think the player said that everybody has to act that way because they are paladins. I think he just said that his character did and is a paladin. Kudos to the player if he refuses a mission on the grounds that it violates his code.

I don't play a paladin character, but it seems that many people who post don't like them much.

Oh fair Taldor, I see great days ahead.
These discussions can be endless, but what we need is success. We cannot fail. If the Baron is not successful then he must be replaced. Not because he is bad, but because he has not succeeded. That's quite simple. If his replacement, the Lady Morilla, is not successful after being given time to shine, then she also must be replaced.
We from Taldor can weave a web of foppishness and decadence, but behind it must be the sharp point of a blade. We play one threat against another, and if appearing foolish and ineffectual aids us in that endeavour, then we do it for Taldor.
Let Taldor shine again and let the Lady Morilla lead us to the new Taldor in her new ways. I for one will follow where she leads.

Recently I have heard a few things from people on these forums regarding Alignment and Evil Acts in PFS. The rules clearly state that characters cannot be of Evil alignment, but I have not really found a statement about Evil Acts. Alignment is a blurry concept and the rules suggest that it shouldn't be a staightjacket, but where are the lines with regard to PFS?
At a table of PFS that I GMed recently I felt that it was necessary to speak with a player about his actions after the game and in the end I wrote a note on a chronicle sheet mentioning that his character had performed a cruel act. I chose my words carefully, but I meant it to show to a GM in the future (if they ever read over his chronicle sheets) that if he continues down this path then his character is (in effect) of evil alignment which is not within the rules of PFS.
I'm sure that many of us have come across characters committing evil acts in game as both players at the table or as GMs and I wondered what opinions were on this contentious subject. For example, is it an evil act to cast a spell with the evil descriptor? How many evil acts are able to be overlooked. What, as a GM should I do? It was definitely causing trouble at the table that I spoke about. Other players were finding the game less enjoyable because of it.

2/5

I don't want to weigh into this, but now I'll talk alignment. When I mentioned heroes earlier, I didn't mention alignment, just heroes. You guys seem to be responding as though I had said you have to play good alignment.
Alignment can be a murky topic, but PFS says that you can be LG,NG,CG,LN,N,CN. I have found in other organised play campaigns over the years that CN is the new evil. Some players who really just want to act evil choose CN instead and define their evil as just being chaotic. One organised play campaign went so far as to restrict players from CN alignment.
I play characters of all alignments, but in PFS I try to stay away from having my characters act in an evil manner. Page 166 of the PF Core Rulebook lays it down pretty clearly in the section on Good vs Evil. Particularly look at the section about people who are neutral with respect to good and evil.
"People who are neutral with respect to good and evil have compunctions against killing the innocent, but may lack the commitment to make sacrifices to protect or help others."
If you know a person is innocent and you kill him anyway (even if you rationalise it by saying that you think he is a secret hidden ninja), you are acting in an evil way. Generally I would say that if you feel the need to rationalise your character's killing behaviour then you might well be stepping over the line. I would reckon that killing innocents for cash as a mercenary is evil behaviour too (according to the Core rulebook).
When I use the word hero, I don't mean much (and maybe it is the wrong word), but I mean not the evil guys in the story.

2/5

I'm no Venture Captain, but I do feel that there are some over-complications in the faction system. I do like the factions. They are flavor and they give each character a stronger connection to role-playing in Golarion. I am ok with some degree of conflict caused by factions (as long as it doesn't get silly).
PFS is an organised play campaign where you are a Pathfinder and a Faction member. That's what the campaign is, so to my thinking you design a character who has a connection with both PFS and Faction. Not so hard.
TPA having a connection to max GP purchase of item seems a bit silly to me. I can't really say that I think this helps anything and perhaps it encourages an over-focus on faction missions. It would be nice if they were somewhat incidental and subtle instead of requiring an off-reservation search to ensure that maximum benefit is gained. I don't really want to care about maximum benefit, but it seems like if you don't, your purchases at higher levels are limited.
The missions do sometimes take extra time which can be frustrating particularly if you aren't of the relevant faction who are delaying the main mission. And yes how many times do you end up searching for an off-mission irrelevancy invented to satisfy some faction's mission.
So to sum up, I love factions in the game, but not the TPA connection and not the way many missions seem to have no relevance to the PFS mission.

Good to hear all the balance and mathematics answers (and balance is important), but I was really asking from a role-playing perspective. Falcata and buckler is an odd combination unless you choose to endorse the Taldan tradition, and I just wondered if someone had chosen the Rondelero option.
I play a Taldan Rogue with a level in Fighter and he fights with Falcata and buckler. I'd love him be be Rondelero because that would further his Taldan-ness. Overall I think the Taldor background is fairly interesting. I like the Empire in Decline feel to it and having a traditional style of sword-fighting adds flavour to the Golarion world.

How did you know you could stop fighting? I haven't played the mod, so no spoilers please, but the guy could have been bluffing his surrender whilst waiting for back-up. He might have figured his escape artist check after being imprisoned was better than defeating an entire party single handed. He could have been disguised and not the person you thought he was. He could have been a plant to pretend to fight, then surrender at the right moment and feed you bogus information.

Stormfriend if you take the approach that someone might be bluffing so you can hit them for lethal damage with sneak attack, then you have a justification to kill anyone you meet. My feeling is that when you play the heroes, act like the heroes.

I wonder how popular the Taldan weapon style of Falcata and Buckler is out there amongst players. Also there is a weapon style archetype called Rondelero in the Inner Sea Primer and I wondered if anyone had created a character with this style.
I think the Falcata is a pretty darn good weapon with the crit range of 19-20/x3, but it takes an Exotic Weapon feat. Also it is the traditional weapon of Taldor according to the old Campaign Setting book, but this does not seem to be mentioned in the newer Inner Sea Primer and the Inner Sea World Guide.
So, Taldor people, how popular is the Falcata out there?

2/5

Sorry to say Leadership is not available. A good document for you is the Pathfinder Society Guide to Organised Play. On Page 14 in the Step 5: Feats section, the feats that are not available are listed, including Leadership.

2/5

I think that the new factions will likely be represented amongst those presented in the Faction Guide. I think that the fascination with alignment (and balance across all alignments) is not what we are likely to see, and I think that the new factions are likely to get away from the current faction's focus on a single nation.
IMHO the factions will likely provide options for people with like philosophies rather than the same alignment. A Neutral faction will likely be unfussed by alignment, whereas a LN faction would have most members with a lawful bent. So all alignments are likely to be covered, but not by their exact alignment.
Looking at the faction guide, I think we might see - Arcanamirium, Bloodstone Swords, Green Faith, Mendev Crusaders, Shackles Pirates. That way you have a group that appeals to arcane casters, one for mercenary types, one for druids and rangers, one for good crusading types and one for the wild adventuring types. I have no real idea, but I would guess they'd be organisations with an interest in exploring Golarion.

Well if you don't have enough points then 5/6 is ok, but when you need it to work because its life or death then 6/6 is what you want (but not a 1).

2/5

I have a rogue with some UMD. It is quite useful. You are right that you need to get plenty of points in it to make it reliable, but 12 levels of play is plenty for that when you look at ways to get the number up. Feats for starters and then magic like circlet of persuasion which will lift your Charisma based skill checks.
UMD is a fun concept anyway. It keeps those elitist wizards in their place a bit, and of course being able to use a wand of CLW is always handy.

Chelaxians are those who are likely to brood for a while before they reply I think. The sentiments are right for a Chelaxian.
Andoran has won this battle, but the world, that is a different story. They seem to be descending into chaos and in time that will unravel whereas the law and order of Cheliax will drive on and on.
Mark my words, there is plenty of life left in the Chelaxian Empire, and life there is good for those who live by the system and play the game. We look forward to our continuing contact with those who support the Andoran ideals.
I watch them rejoicing in their victory and their new symbol. But a word of warning, beware, even a new symbol is just a symbol, and if you rejoice too long, those of us who support Cheliax will take full advantage.
Asmodeus' ways can be cruel, but we all know that sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. And his ways of law provide a better, safer world for all who embrace it.
Ok so here's a reply from a loyal Chelaxian inquisitor of Asmodeus.

2/5

I have been looking for this stuff since it has been announced. I've been looking in additional resources. Will mention of it be going in there?

2/5

Go Andoran! Good luck to them. Nice new symbol too.
As for the change to Chaotic Good I think it probably does represent the ideals of the faction somewhat. Anyways we'll have to trust the campaign staff with what they have in mind for the new factions. The campaign is maturing and getting more interesting. Bravo PFS!
Missions and modules and perceived requests for killings are a bit of a problem. In early days I was less fussed about failing missions, but now that PA is tied into purchasing powers for magic items, I am more keen to complete them. I like interesting and dubious missions sometimes and have some characters who they suit. I would like to see the benefits of PA go in different directions and magic item purchasing power based off character level, not PA. i'm not sure what relevance to give PA though. Factions and PA are a powerful concept and some benefit needs to be given to the PA, but I guess I want to be comfartable if, for whatever reason, I fail a mission too. Failure should be ok too.
Back to the start, bravo Andoran. Now that this is resolved I await the new dawn of year three ideas and concepts.

Thanks for all your posts on this topic. Each one contains some insight.
Of course during a game my character will put up with what is around him. After the game though he would like to have a black list of PFS members who he won't adventure with because they are (in his book) evil, callous, cruel or whatever. the thing with this game is it was part 1 of 3 - Heresy of Man - so we'll no doubt adventure again.
I guess players love to flirt on the line of what is evil. I imagine there are more neutral characters out there than good. Generally myself I like to play good because more often than not it supports the ideals of playing in a heroic genre (like fantasy), but I have a range of characters now and some of mine (one in particular) is close to that line sometimes -
Human Rogue N Takdor Faction
Elf Ranger CG Andoran Faction
Human Inquisitor (of Asmodeus) LN Cheliax Faction
Human Summoner NG Qadiran Faction
Particularly the Inquisitor has sometimes felt in missions that he is required to kill someone and he won't hesitate because he feels it is lawful execution (usually) and his holy duty (sometimes). He is my most dubious character.
The difference in the recent game is that the behaviour seemed to me to be outside of the game and role-playing. It was (attempted) killing to utilise and ability because the mechanic was there. And that was my disappointment I guess. In character I felt that the character's action was borderline evil and unnecessary. He struck a human after it had been worked out that we could stop fighting. Another continued with non-lethal damage, but this character wanted to use sneak attack and his primary weapon, so he just attacked as normal. It turned out that he didn't kill the NPC, just took him to unconsciousness, but that was a quirk of the damage. He could have done enough damage to kill him. Was the action evil? If so, what are the consequences?
By the way he was playing a pregen to make up numbers in this game, so he had no close connection to the character.
We all know that there are plenty of computer based games out there, where killing is scoring and this action smelled to me of that behaviour. it was disappointing to see.
I must add that I have played PFS for a long time now and rarely seen this sort of behaviour. Most games have been great, but I guess this one pushed my buttons which is why I am mentioning it here.

I was wondering how people deal with situations at the table.
In a game recently, my character of good alignment had to deal with another player wanting to hit an NPC in an encounter after we had seemingly determined that the combat that had occured up till then was due to a misunderstanding. He seemed to justify his action by, well I have been hit and hurt so I should be allowed to hit back. To my character (and me) this seemed callous and unneccesary. He just wanted to hit because it is a game and hitting is a mechanic.
Of course, I like to play to role-play my character and my good-aligned character was not comfortable with his actions. In fact my character felt that they were borderline evil-actions. The NPC was by no means innocent, but the combat was really over at this stage, so hitting him was just gratuitous.
I am likely to play another game with the same player in a week (with the same characters). Obviously player (internal) conflicts occur, but if my good character continues to accept this and adventure with characters who act callously (maybe almost evilly) then I'm really not role-playing anymore. I think I will accept most things at the table, but if I role-play a character who beleives life has value and others around just slaughter without concern then I may as well just have a list of statistics in front of me and join the slaughter without characterisation.
I'm really just sharing experiences here, but I wondered what others have to say.

I believe that all of those questions have already been addressed by Mark, above...non humans can gain human regional languages by virtue of high intelligence as bonus languages. Ancient languages, you have to spend a point in linguistics.

What I was getting at here was that not all players read these forums, so if these are the PFS rules regarding languages then it seems that they need to be added to the Guide to Organised Play where all players should see them and can ensure that their characters follow the rules.

I think the language situation needs to be clarified.
In the Core Rulebook under human racial traits it says - "Languages: Humans begin play speaking Common. Humans with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic)." This makes me think that humans can choose any language as a bonus language unless, as stated, it is a secret language. That reads to me that a human character can choose to begin with Azlanti, Ancient Osiriani, Aklo, Undercommon, Celestial, Infernal or any other such non- Modern Human Language because for human characters there seems no restriction.
Non-human characters don't have such an easy time of it. They get other benefits of course, but their available bonus languages only include racial languages. Giving characters of non-human races access to a few more languages doesn't seem out of line.
Is there a rule regarding languages that I have missed? Are there any restrictions on the languages that can be chosen if a point is spent on Linguistics? Or on the languages that a human can choose as Bonus Languages?
