![]() -------Epilogue------ The journey was over, and the prophecy laid out by Dasur's calculations and precise gemcutting had come to fruitition, just as he had espoused to his colleagues at the Royal College of Formulae and Magicks over a year ago. They had mocked him- prophecy was dead, they had said, the Stone may carry a memory of the past, but it was impossible to use it to predict the future. His efforts, his vision, was a fool's dream, and his great talents should be focused elsewhere. They were wrong, and he set out to prove it. In the weeks after their victory over the Black Flame, Dasur was mostly seen in conversation with Arcanet, the knowledgeable construct and repository of Dammerhall's engineering history. Eventually he asked the group to assist him in reclaiming Arcanet's core, located in one of Dammerhall's precious vaults. On its retrieval the wizard did little else beside study its machinations and knowledge; Torvi noted he even began to modify the construct's routines and responses when she called upon it for engineering knowledge, and in time he had turned the construct into his personal calculator and assistant. Thanks to the magic of his amulet Dasur was beyond mortal needs such as sustenance or sleep. His reclusive behavior multiplied and only the increasingly modified and obstuse Arcanet could keep up with his work or offer updates to the others concerning his whereabouts. In this time he and his ruby familiar Zhashilgeax (The Contemplative King in the Unknown Stronghold of Reaching Mysteries), which he had been seen engaging in one-sided conversations with in increasing frequency, only seemed to cooperate with the original reclaimers of Dammerhall if their goals aligned. In the months after the reclaimation Dasur suddenly appeared in his old office at the Royal College of Formulae and Magicks in a burst of teleportation energy, nearly causing its current occupant and old colleague to nearly die of fright. The wizard was accompanied by bound stacks of papers two dwarfs tall and five dwarfs wide, along with a single cube of agate. He claimed the proof of his theories were contained in the papers, with supplementry material capable of being projected from the crystal. He promptly left after refusing any further explanation, leaving the confusing and nearly indecipherable work on how he predicted the reclaimation of Dammerhall to be puzzled over until another great mind emerges from the stock of High Helm. It was noted repeatedly to Snorri via missive that Dasur did not visit his mother at this time and she was quite upset. Dasur Deepborn, second in line to the throne of Dammerhall, retreated further from the court of the ancient dwarven city even as its door once again opened to the children of Torag. He declined any offers to become court wizard or the like, though he still filled some of the role in an unofficial capacity. Whatever dwarf Snorri found to officially fill the position was certainly not stupid and recognized the value in going to Dasur for help, even if it was difficult to tear him away from his projects. Because after all, real magic takes time, study, and careful planning. The every day spells; manipulating the elements, creating interdimensional space, summoning extraplanar beings, this was magic with thousands of year of history, carefully constructed with safeguards and incrementally improved upon as it passed from one generation to the next. Dealing with polymorphed goats, or curses, or whatever court wizards do... This magic was rote and boring to Dasur's enigmatic and indefatigable mind, like asking a child what 2 + 2 equaled over, and over, and over. He sought to create new spells, and with much of Dammerhall's ancient magic still intact for study, the wizard was given a ripe garden to pluck various seeds of arcane thought to add to his repertoire. He was working on something big. He became difficult to find, though if one knew where the leylines ran and the places of power in Dammerhall were, he could be found and petitioned for favors. Another year passed, and Arcanet seemed to barely respond to anyone besides Dasur- he had absolutely and shamelessly hijacked the construct for his own ends, to the point where if it appeared before anyone else it was because he willed it. Surprisingly, and with uncharacteristic enthusiasm, he was there when the first dwarven child was born in the hallowed halls; it fittingly, emerged from the loins of the King and Queen. As the onlookers and well-wishers gathered around the new hier to Dammerhall's legacy, Dasur approached from the crowd and laid his hand upon the child's head. The stone around them trembled and hummed with power as Dasur placed a powerful ward upon the child to protect it from all harm. The child's hair fell out, its skin became mottled living granite, its eyes morphed into piercing, shining jewels, and nails turned into shimmering multi-colored marble. Any protests from the King and Queen were ignored by the smiling wizard, who merely proclaimed his duty was done. It written within the Stone that the Dwarves will be ruled for all time by one that resembled the first made by Torag. With a flick of his wrist Dasur vanished, bypassing the anti-teleportation wards he had personally designed and placed upon the new Royal Bedchambers- in hindsight, it did seem strange he volunteered for such a project. Dasur Deepborn disappeared that day, and shortly it became clear he destroyed Arcanet on his way out. The construct's core was drained of all energy, its magic now warped and woven into the binding of the ward he placed upon Dammerhall's hier. However, cube-shaped gemstones containing projectable text summarizing of the construct's knowledge was found neatly stacked in a tall pillar nearby. Scrying and magical means of contact failed to find the wizard. Mundane investigations left only one clue to his whereabouts- the elemental portal they had found on their way to Dammerhall years ago had recently experienced a massive amount of activity, permanently altering the landscape into a lake of boiled stone and minerals that formed a cavity half a mile wide. The portal, now inactive and sealed from the other side, sat silent. Had he completed the staff known as Worldsong and moved on to live amongst the elementals in the outer planes, or was he vaporized in the attempt? Perhaps one day he will reappear. Perhaps not. But the mark he left on the history of Dammerhall will be forever perserved in the Stone. ![]()

![]() Ancestral home RECLAIMED. It took 4 years 11 months, and 12 days; 4,312 posts, 9 players, 2 GMs, but we did it. Congratualtions everyone, it was an excellent journey. Thank you, GM SuperTumbler. You rescued this game and made a memorable adventure out of the bare bones adventure path you were given. I salute you for your dedication to the craft and hope all your players know they are blessed with such a wonderful storyteller and individual. The questions is: What now? Do we have a victory lap, where Dasur learns teleportation on the next level up and we return to Highhelm as the Heroes of the Dwarfkind? Do we stay quiet, continuing the game as is and shore up Dammerhall before announcing its return? Or do we close the book, marking our triumph over the Black Flame as the final chapter in the story? Thoughts and comments, especially from the GM whose say is most important, are appreciated. ![]()

![]() I thought it was cool! Dasur squints against the sunbeam as it suddenly spills over one side of the chasm, and he ignores the fireballs and corrupted dirt clods flying about to appreciate the miracle occuring before them. "No... no miracle." He murmurs to himself, unheard over the sounds of battle. "Simple geometry." Sunlight spills over the Black Flame, and though for a moment the light dims, the shadows are wholly consumed in the end. The wizard stands still and silent as it happens, commiting the dissolution to memory. His droning was the first to break the silence- "This was far more dramatic than my initial projections, but it was well within error. Each of us have fulfilled our destiny, which is now written within the Stone. Dammerhall belongs to its rightful hiers once again." Dusting some dirt off of his body with a satisfied sigh, he begins to casually hop down the embarkments towards one of the nearby walls. Dirty, bloodied, and in tattered clothes, Dasur takes a moment to lift the antique mining helmet off of his head and look at its dented, beaten surface. He drops the undeeded armor unceremoniously into the loam without a backwards glance. "Now if you'll excuse me," He lifts a hand, placing it against an earthern walls. "I have much to discuss with Arcanet." The wizard is slowly sucked into the dirt by his arm. "Perhaps I'll make some tea." Is his final comment before disappearing and traveling upward through the ground towards the throne room, leaving the rest of the group behind. ![]()

![]() I think Dasur is also lose enough to get that feather fall, Torvi. He, Glenda, and Torvi are all about 15 ft apart. Dasur feels the lurching acceleration as the ground gives way beneath him, and he wonders how the Air had managed to come t he Earth. The negative energy surely had something to do with it, otherwise such processes took thousands of years. He dsitracted himself with such thoughts while falling, though the rate slows noticebly as Torvi's magic allows him to safely shift position and gladly put feet back onto (somewhat) solid ground). "Ah." He intones, turning towards the coalescing form at the top of the decrepit mound that was once fertile soil. "This is more how imagined the physical form to be." Lifting his staff, he attempts to distrupt the Black Flame's formation for a moment longer, attacking the very magic holding it together. This probably won't do anything, BUT: Standard action: Cast Dispel Magic Dasur is going to target the Black Flame with Dispel Magic, seeking to interrupt whatever process it is using to coalesce itself. Maybe he can slow it down for another round, or make one of its wings fall off or something. ![]() Wow, it's worse than I thought! The sudden dangling of his feet out of the dirt causes Dasur to stop his subterranean exploration. The boots suck back in the soil before he rotates 180 degrees along his vertical axis and pokes his head out into the space below. "Ah. Improbable and unexpected, but my eyes do not deceive me." He mutters to himself before quickly flying upward through the soil feet-first. A pair of well-worn boots frst emerge from the ground where the wizard had been originally standing. Legs and the rest of his body follow suit and he is extruded from the ground like a sasauge maker to end up crumbled up on the ground, laying on his back. "There appears to be a massive field of negative energy approximately 20 feet below us." Dasur says calmly as he picks himself off the ground. "It is consuming all of the soil and the ground itself will collapse beneath us shortly." He points towards the melted throne room. "Either we quickly evacuate, find a way to enter the monolith, or fall into the field below." If we're all hasted we might be able to make it back to the throne room? ![]()

"A portion of the Black Flame is within, taking the form of an elemental-like being, This is incredible. I suspected this entity could split off portions of itself, possibly with its own sentience, and this confirms it." He explains the rest of the function of the device over the course of several minutes, and how the larger device in the agricultural area is merely a scaled-up version of this device. "We will be able to practice not only the safe release of the energy stored in the device, but observe what spells and effects are most effective against this manifestation of the Black Flame." Dasur drones, preparing to turn the old court wizard's quarters into a testing ground. "Arcanat!" He calls to Dammerhall's resident construct. "Assist me!" The heat and wind we experienced before are but a fraction of its power, held in check by the prototype device. It must remain bound for now." Dasur informs the king, which he does not wish to see reduced to a crisp. As second in line to sovereignty to Dammerhall, the throne is not something the wizard is particually excited to inherent. On reviewing the first time we spoke with the Sun Keeper, it actually speaks Dwarven, so no translating needed. Others rules about approaching it: GM wrote:
Furthermore, if we release it the fire damage is increased to 20d6 and round and the wind forces become hurricane level. So uh... don't be in the room with it when it gets freed. With no dissenters on the plan to study the prototype, Dasur makes his way back to the throne room. The heat and light from the western chamber is still evident in the otherwise cold, dark, and dead throne room, though the fountain does look rather refreshing. The wizard casts a pair of spells where the heat is not so great, first summoning an invisible figure of force that will be sacrificed to break the binding circle of the Sun Keeper, and then a spell that will give brief proection from its overwhelming flames. Dasur will cast Unseen Servant, and then place Protection from Fire, Communal on himself, the Unseen Servant, Snorri, and anyone else that wants it. He can split it up between 9 people, 10 minutes each person, and it absorbs 90 fire damage. After warding his king against the flames in the following room, he cautions: "Snorri, this creature has suffered for a century or more. The very air here is to it as if you were left outside in a blizzard naked. It will want to leave this plane immediately. But perhaps you can convince it to stay long enough to take revenge on its captor, to nullify some or all of the negative energy found in yonder obelisk holding the Black Flame. Regardless of what it says, we must release it so we may study the device sapping its energy." "I will send my Servant to break the circle when you are finished speaking with it." Though he waits outside the room for now, he points his staff at the nearby fountain. "However, the power of this being is so intense, that once it is freed I suggest we all take shelter in the waters of the fountain should it decide to pass through this room to attack the obelisk of the Black Flame. My magic would only hold for seconds against such power, but the Water can absorb much heat." A sad look is cast upon the Throne of Dammerhall. ![]() Okay here's my plan. Dasur still has a Protection from Energy, Communal spell left which can absorb 108 fire damage, with a duration of 90 minutes that can be spread among people in 10 minute intervals. If someone wants to try and talk to the Sun Keeper (and can speak Ignus), you would have a few rounds without dying. Otherwise, Dasur will cast Unseen Servant, Protection from Energy: Fire on himself and the Servant, and then instruct the servant to go into the room and disrupt the binding circle. I suppose if one of you is feeling particularly brave you can also be the one to disrupt the circle, but there's really no telling what that Sun Keeper is going to do when freed. It could either Plane Shift immediately, or try to take revenge, but considering it's in constant pain I suspect it will just leave. Then we rest and study the device in conjunction with the rod Garnet pulled out of the device: GM Tumbler wrote: The gunzarak rod might be described as a greater rod of shadows. Holding it, you can see perfectly in darkness. As a weapon, it functions as a +5 gunzarak (silver and adamantine) light mace. It can cast deeper darkness at will. ![]() "No solutions, but a wide array of options." Dasur responds to Snorri's inquiries after analyzing the machine's aura and outer workings. "I propose we free the Sun Keeper trapped in the former head magician's chambers, then study the device that was suppressing its energy. I believe I have the needed spells to unshackle the outsider within being vaporized in turn, or to allow one to speak with it before it leaves this plane if someone wishes to volunteer to interrogate it or briefly enlist its services. However, I suspect this creature will say anything to be freed, and will simply shift planes the moment it is unbound." Breathlessly, the wizard changes topics. "We do know if this "throne of night" device can self-activate, or how much time we have if it can. Yet I would suggest we all rest after the Sun Keeper has been freed, so we may prepare for the possible confrontation with the Black Flame and study the prototype device." ![]()

![]() Dasur seems relieved when the construct appears to be much more cooperative than before. "This is good. There is much to learn from this construct, and if it is free from the Black Flame as it claims, we should heed its words." He listens carefully, turning to stare up at the monolith of dark energy before them. "So this is the physical vessel of the black flame's manifestation, as I had earlier theorized." An idle hand strokes his greasy, single-braided beard. "Tell me, Arcanant. Does this structure, and the willed energy within, have the ability to activate of its own accord? If so, do you have an estimate on the time frame until activation?" Torvi's inquiries inspire some of his own. "Indeed, if we could reverse the magic of this chamber to its original state, to once again channel the light of the sun, should it not weaken and eventually kill the Black Flame within? Otherwise, it may behoove us to simply trap it within this device indefinnitely rather than risk releasing it." ![]()

![]() "The motivations to blot out the sun are untelligable to me." Dasur comments as he approaches the machine with Erebos. "The only allure of the surface is the light and energy of our star. Here in the deep is the security of the stone the three dimensional spaces in which one may build and know intimately. There are seas and life and wealth here in abundance. The surface, without light, would merely be a vast open plain of nothing, for plants cannot survive without light and animals cannot survive without plants. I am curious, Erebos... would you rather be in a cavern, unable to see its end but know it has an end, or be in unlimited darkness, stretching forever in all directions that merely loops back in on itself?" Philosophical questions aside, the wizard turns to the task at hand. "We must learn more about this machine if we are to disable it, though I am open to the idea of channeling the negative energy stored within to another task. Let us speak with one that knows." His voice then rises, echoing about the agricultural cavern. "Arcanant! Appear at my side!" Dasur surmises the construct that had introduced itself when they entered the cavern must still be around, watching. "Tell me the nature of this device. Where and how does it draw its energy? CAn the process be reversed to bleed it back to its source, or will the negative energy within need to be annilihated with an equal measure of positive energy?" ![]()

Bemoans the wizard before he starts digging in the dirt with the end of his staff to look for remnants of the undead hands. "Yes, there was a Deep One stuck in the pit. I estimate you have 30 seconds until the field stabilizing the extradimensional space collapses and brings it to the surface." He does not seem to be coverly concerned by this, and continues digging. Create Pit has 3 rounds left at this point. I'm not even sure if the Deep One is still down there. "Erebos, it seems that creature had its own master, indicating it was in fact not solely responsible for the events that transpired here, nor was it controlling the Black Flame. ![]() Dasur dances around the grasping hands, wondering if they were truly the bodies of their ancestors buried here, or if the effect was a similar magic to how he moved energy from different planes. Well, he figures, he could just ask. Excuse me, but are these necrotic hands actually buried here and actually descended from dwarven flesh, or is this a localized magical effect utilizing solidified negative energy into a corpse-simulacrum framework? If this is the latter, why choose hands when you lack similar grasping appendages? Surely tentacles or jaws would be just as effective and far easier for you to visualize for the effect?
