All,
My situation at work has changed significantly over the past few months, and while it's good for my career, it's been disastrous for my free time. Unfortunately, I have not been able to adequately keep up with this game, and after some thought, I decided to let GM Fang know that I cannot continue playing.

Darien looks at Ignius, "Are you able to shed some light down there before we descend? I'd hate to climb down into a pit of vipers or something even more dangerous."

"Good sir, I think that 50gp is a large sum for a single day of fishing. Perhaps you would be willing to take less? Say 25gp for the day - and you know from our prior dealings you can trust us. That has to be worth something."

"Or maybe your price is fair after all, it's certainly cheaper than purchasing our own boat, and you are definitely a fine sailor who can keep us safe and headed in the right direction. Here is your gold."

Darien pays the money.

As the group leaves, Darien looks at Justified and Moira, "Do you know anybody else who might have information? I hate to waste the rest of the day."

Darien nods, "Oh, I understand your concern. We've actually been asked to find this Vanthus by his sister. Seems their folks died a while back, and she's keen to see how he's been getting on. So don't worry yourself - I'm sure he would want us to find him."

Darien pulls out a eight more gold pieces. "Perhaps this will prove to be a suitable finder's fee? And we'll promise to forget where we got the information..."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16

Darien steps forward, "Good day, sir. We're actually trying to find somebody who might have come by here. Name of Vanthus. You wouldn't remember anybody by that name, would you?"

Darien produces two gold pieces as he speaks, places them down in front of the dwarf, then covers them with his hand.

Darien nods, "Fair enough, we'll just have to ask around."

He looks at Justified and Moira, "Seems you two have a good idea how we should proceed, so I'm following you."

Darien nods, "Finding your brother, hm? Well, you were generous last time we worked for you, what does this errand pay?"

"What can you tell us about this 'company' he's been keeping? Names, locations, anything like that?"

"And do we have to bring him back here when we find him, or just deliver a message?"

Darien is holding on to his money for now, and is ready to meet with everyone at the manor.

Darien looks at the gorilla for a minute, then over at Ignius. Smiling, he claps the man on the shoulder, "Next time we have a puzzle, you're in charge!"

Darien steps forward and rotates the pillar east (to the right) until the red arrow points at the gorilla-like creature.

Darien looks at the creatures again, then the note.

"You know, there isn't a cyclops up there, but I do see an ettin. And there isn't a basilisk, but there is a dragon. Those are pretty close. What would be closest to a chimera?"

Not sure, just taking a shot...

"I think the note indicates the direction we should turn the pillar, not the location of the monsters."

Darien moves up and swings his greatsword at the snake, but fails to connect!

Darien shakes his head, indicating he doesn't recognize the symbol.

"That's probably a good idea. In fact, why don't we all go?" Darien gives Ignius a glance as he allows himself to be dragged to the store. Along the way, he tries to keep an eye on his surroundings in case Vark shows himself again.

"Indeed, it might be in everyone's best interest for her to come... if she's interested?"

Darien looks to Moira to see if she might like to continue journeying with the group.

GM, have we figured out what Vark was doing on the ship? I know we have discovered the giant spider thing, but I just wanted to confirm that the characters have fulfilled their agreement with Lavinia before we continue the discussion about leaving the ship.

"Alright, alright, enough with the hugs. Let's get back to land."

Turning to the girl, "Moira, was it? Well, come on, I'll not have you die of exposure or starvation after saving you from that spider. I'll at least see you fed and safely asleep tonight."

Looking at the rest of the group, "I'll cover it."

I assume the boat we hired to get out to the ship is still there?

No issues here. Darien sees her as the "annoying little sister" at the moment (meant in a good way). Once she gets to know us, she'll see we're not all that stuffy. :)

"I'm not sleeping here tonight. Men like Vark would sneak back during the night and slit our throats. I say we take our time to search the cabins then discuss our next steps if we don't find the ring there."

"He is Justified, and that is what you should call him, if you please."

"And yes, Ignius, she is lying, but I'm not sure if it's because she is scared of us, or if it's out of habit. Maybe both. But either way, she doesn't seem to pose an immediate threat, so we should be about our business."

"Let's find the cabins of this ship and see if we can find what we came for - I'm leery about staying here too long since Vark may come back with more men."

"Moira, why don't you come with us. We have a boat and can get you back to shore."

Darien actually laughs, "Take her food, Grun."

"I agree Ignius, searching the ship is a priority, but we still have an issue that needs resolving first."

Darien looks at the woman again, "No, we're not with Vark. We're the people that ran him and his gang off this ship. But you still haven't answered our questions. Who are you, and what are you really doing here? We're not the watch either, so just tell us what we want to know and we can finish our business and get back to shore."

"And Grun isn't a pet, he's a grippli, they live in the jungles around Sassarine. He helped save your life, so whistling at him like a dog probably isn't the best way to show your gratitude."

Just to confirm, the ship is no longer on fire, or in immediate danger of sinking? Assuming that is correct...

Darien lowers his sword and looks at the woman, "Darien Coldwater, and this is Grun, Ignius, and Justified. Who are you, and what was going on down here? Trying to burn the ship down?"

Darien puts his hand on the hilt of his sword, "You've got this wrong, Vark. You made the wrong enemies, and it's time to pay up. But it's just you we want, we'll forget we saw anybody who leaves now."

I know that my Intimidate rolls aren't 100% RAW, but I think the situation calls for it, so I'm going with it. :)

As the fishing boat nears the Nixie, Darien turns to his companions. "Lavania told us that Vark won't react well to diplomacy or logic, so I'm thinking a show of strength may be required. When we arrive, let's try and get aboard with bluster. I don't relish shipboard combat when we're in the smaller boat."

When the fishing vessel gets next to the larger ship, Darien attempts to climb aboard. If challenged he responds angrily, "We're here to see Vark, now back off and get him out here!"

Darien glares as the grippli walks away, "This is business, Sun. Best have everything on the table before the agreement is final. My question was fair, and Lady Vanderboran responded as I'd hoped. I simply wanted to be sure I understand the terms of our employment. Of course, no offense was intended."

He bows low before the women, "I am also willing to accept the commission, but I do have a couple more questions about the specifics of the job."

"Do you know how many men Vark usually has with him? And do you expect him to be on the boat with his men? After all, assaulting ten men on a ship is slightly different than confronting one in a bar."

Darien shakes his head, but takes a respectful tone as he speaks, "So let me understand this - if we do all the work and get on the ship, but we don't find the ring to let you have access to the vault, we don't get paid. Is that correct?"

I was planning to ask about that IC anyway, just didn't have time to post earlier.

Darien looks at the man called Justified. "We have met a time or two, he is a grippli from a tribe outside the city."

The hunter nods toward the older man, "Pleased to meet you, Ignius. I'm comfortable, but after being outside so much, I tend to ignore minor changes in temperature so I may not be the best person to speak on it."

Darien, frustration showing on his face, walks over to another man, "Greetings, my name is Darien Coldwater. Do you, by chance, have any idea why we are here?"

Talking to Justified, but speaking loud enough for anybody to respond.

Darien reads the letter, turns it over to inspect the address, then reads it again.

He folds the letter and places it back into the envelope. Looking at the woman, Darien places his hand over his heart and bows his head. "Thank you for the message. Please inform Lady Vanderboren I will attend."

Darien is an alias I originally used in a short-lived PbP. The name and race work for my ranger, so I'm reusing him.

I still need to add a feat from the STAP Player's Guide, and his background, but other than that, he should be good to go. Plan to have all of that finished tonight.
