OK, yeah, I have to agree with you.. I just looked at my copy of book 3, and had totally forgotten about those pictures (ie. pages 15 and 34).. I don't mean to sound like I hate the artist, because I think they're well-drawn. I just think they're a little too bright and goofy - they don't seem to match the tone of Pathfinder so far at all. So yeah, I do agree. I did like the art in book 2.. The only reason I would say it's my least favorite so far is because I didn't like how some of the characters looked. Again, not saying the art was poorly-done. I just didn't like the look of, say, the cultists (with their wacky orange-y circus clothes) and Xanesha's big Madonna rocket-boob cones. Anyway, I suppose we're getting off topic now. heh :) Over all, I'm happy with PF's art so far!
Thanks for the nice words, folks! BTW -
I saw it and thought, "Hmm.. that could be a cool Nualia." :)
The only two things I ever use the inside of my screen for is (1) to paperclip maps to for easy reference, and (2) to paperclip player info for me to see quickly, like their hit points, main weapons, spells, whatever.. But yeah, I'm a DM screen junkie.. I'm sort of a sucker for 'em. I like to have new art for the players to look at, so I buy new ones sometimes just for a change of pace, regardless of what info's on them or what system/setting they're for. I will definitely be all over it if there's a Pathfinder one.. And again, my main request would be that the artwork side either features some epic cool scenery, to give the players a feel for what the world looks like, OR some Wayne Reynolds art. Either one and I'll be a happy DM. :) Hell, maybe you could even put a few Wayne pieces of the characters or beasties on the INSIDE of the screen, for the DMs to enjoy!! :) :)
I'm glad someone started this thread! My gaming group and I were just talking about this -- we would LOVE to see a Pathfinder GM screen!! My vote for the outside (the side facing the players) would be something vast and epic, like a big city shot, OR anything by Wayne Reynolds -- maybe a collage of his various Pathfinder character pieces. My vote for the inside (facing the DM) would be a world map/region maps, and maybe a couple city maps. I love having maps on the inside of a screen - I usually end up paperclipping photocopies to my screens. :) (Or if you guys wanna hire me to draw the screen art, I'm available.. :P haarr)

Sorry, man.. :) I'm just sayin'... the minute I see the word "ninja" in a Pathfinder book, I'm filing for divorce. hah
Personally I've always had a hard time getting into Eberron.. It's always felt overly cheesy to me (and the fact that they don't use Wayne Reynolds' ENTIRE cover images on the actual covers always bugs me.. I want full wrap-around Wayne goodness, dammit!) :) So far the Pathfinder setting is much more my speed. It feels a little closer to the kind of world I would create on my own.
Alrightee... I drew Ameiko.. I'm sure some of you aren't gonna like it (it's pretty different from the version of her in the book), but this is my interpretation of her, so... here ya go:
Hey, guys -- thanks again for the nice words. :)
James Jacobs wrote: We don't have another picture of Ameiko scheduled, which is a little too bad since, personally, I find her illo and the others in Sandpoint to just not match the style of art that I wanted for Pathfinder. In any case, Ameiko's got a starring role in my mind in a future adventure path, and by that time you can bet she'll get some better art. Well, hey - maybe I'll have to whip up some new Ameiko art myself and post it over in my Fan Art thread. ;)
So I haven't been able to say the words "celestial taint" to my PCs without it being followed by ten minutes of giggling.. (if you don't know why, then your mind is cleaner and more mature than theirs. heh) And they start making "Sha-Nay-Nay" jokes whenever I say Shalelu.... But other than those two things, my PCs are LOVING the Pathfinder adventure so far.. Just wanted to pop on here and say thanks again to the creators of this product for making it very cool and lots of fun. My group isn't very far along -- we only get together every other week -- right now they're in the Catacombs of Wrath. But so far it's been a lot of fun. And I'm lookin' forward to checking out book 2!

Nice job! That looks really good.... I did a similar thing, just typed up my own for the players. But yours looks much fancier than mine. heh :)
Mothman wrote: Not sure how Kyle Hunter's artwork resembles 'japanimation'. The style is indisputably 'cartoonish', but it doesn't particularly remind me of 'japanimation'. (As opposed to some of the other artwork which arguably does provide more of a nod to the anime style). Others may disagree with me here. Nah, you're 100% right... I've never understood why some people think all cartoony art falls under the "manga" or "japanimation" category. Next thing ya know, people will be calling Popeye and Mickey Mouse manga.
janxious wrote: Now I'm going to complain. The picture looks a bit washed out. I messed with it briefly in paint.net (lightness/contrast & hue/saturation) and got it to "pop" a lot more. There's not a whole lot of contrast in the picture you posted, so it ends up looking slightly muddy. Yep, that was done on purpose. I was going for kind of a foggy, moody look in terms of the color scheme. :) I didn't want it to be too bright and colorful.
PandaGaki wrote: Without screams Cool, the link's workin' now... That is truly one of the coolest things ever. I am totally playing the "with screams" version on loop for my PCs next week when we play. :D
James Jacobs wrote: In any event, your picture's pretty close. I'd just expand her iris a bit more, and maybe make it a little bit more brightly colored. Gotcha.. I made an updated version. Hopefully it's a little closer to how it should be. :) http://grantgould.com/art/pathfinder/gould_shalelu_eyefix.jpg

Thanks, guys! Basically I'm trying to figure out which NPCs will play fairly large roles in the game and then draw those characters, so I can print 'em up and give them to the players as visual reference.. I like Shalelu a lot, so I drew her first (and gave her the dark eyes that it sounds like all elves will be getting from now on). And I figured Hemlock would be around a lot at the beginning, so I drew him. *shrug* No huge rhyme or reason I guess. :)
I'm not sure if this is allowed.. If this thread doesn't belong here or is a really stupid idea, feel free to kick me directly in the butt. Sometimes I like to draw my own fan art based on characters and NPCs in whatever adventure I'm running. It's a good little time-killer and I can use 'em as hand-outs for my PCs. Anyway.. I made a couple for Pathfinder tonight and thought I'd share them here. Maybe some of you might like to print them up for your own games. My art style is kinda cartoony/comic-booky, so I'm sure it won't be to everyone's tastes -- but that's alright. Looks like I can't post any images here, so you get links instead --
Again, if this is a stupid idea for a thread, that's cool - I won't beat a dead horse. But if you guys enjoy this sorta thing, let me know and I'll post some more.
mearrin69 wrote: His style is one of the things that has really helped the Eberron setting come alive for me. Definitely -- Wayne's covers for the Eberron books are amazing. It always bugged me that they had those cover designs that confined his pictures to that tiny strip of space -- I wanted his artwork to fill the whole cover! :) Going back to Pathfinder 1 for a moment, I also wanted to say I really like the artist who did the images on pages 23, 46, 50, etc. I don't know the artist's name, but kudos to them -- It's a really interesting style and makes for some cool lookin' characters. I like it. Again, props to Paizo for having great taste in art.
MaxSlasher26 wrote: I also agree with an art gallery. I like to print out images of NPCs, monsters, and locales and show them to PCs rather than just showing them the book. Yep, I completely agree with this -- I'd love to be able to print up some of the art for the PCs. As it is right now, I'll probably just photocopy a couple of the pages for them, but that's always a clunky way of doing it, since I don't wanna flatten the book, and I'll have to hide text, etc.. So yeah.. Art Gallery please! :D
I guess it's fitting that this is my first post here, since I'm a big geek when it comes to the art stuff.. For me, the design and artwork in a book can make or break it for me. If the Pathfinder stuff hadn't grabbed my attention visually, I wouldn't have paid any attention to it, no matter how awesome the stories and content might be. I just won't pay money every month for a product that doesn't look great, because the visual stuff fuels me as a DM. And as a former graphic artist and current freelance illustrator, I'm picky about these things. heh So yeah, I have to give HUGE props to Paizo for hiring on some wicked-amazing talent in the art department. Sure, there are a few pictures in book 1 that weren't as awesome as others, but over all, it's WAY better looking than 99% of the other RPG products out there. Wayne Reynolds has become one of my favorite artists. I love everything he does. Great style, unique characters, action packed, just cartoony enough to make it fun. I hope he stays with Pathfinder for a long time. And lemme tell ya, I never really liked goblins before, but after Wayne's art and this book, I'm now a Goblin Fan. :) Bottom line for me - I love the look of Pathfinder 1. I can't wait to finish reading it. The art is superb. Call it "manga style" or whatever you like, but I love it (and for the record, I don't consider it manga style - I consider it "comic style" if anything). If Paizo were to switch up the look of the books to something more realistic and less cartoony, there's a good chance I'd start losing interest. This is exactly the kind of sourcebook I enjoy. |
