1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm not sure if this is allowed.. If this thread doesn't belong here or is a really stupid idea, feel free to kick me directly in the butt.

Sometimes I like to draw my own fan art based on characters and NPCs in whatever adventure I'm running. It's a good little time-killer and I can use 'em as hand-outs for my PCs. Anyway.. I made a couple for Pathfinder tonight and thought I'd share them here. Maybe some of you might like to print them up for your own games.

My art style is kinda cartoony/comic-booky, so I'm sure it won't be to everyone's tastes -- but that's alright.

Looks like I can't post any images here, so you get links instead --
Belor Hemlock & Shalelu Andosana
Small JPEG
8.5x11 JPEG for Printing

Again, if this is a stupid idea for a thread, that's cool - I won't beat a dead horse. But if you guys enjoy this sorta thing, let me know and I'll post some more.
:)

Me likey.

I like your style, I don't think Paizo would have anything against sharing art you created yourself based on Pathfinder.

But one thing, why those two since they are already illustrated?

Thanks, guys!

Basically I'm trying to figure out which NPCs will play fairly large roles in the game and then draw those characters, so I can print 'em up and give them to the players as visual reference.. I like Shalelu a lot, so I drew her first (and gave her the dark eyes that it sounds like all elves will be getting from now on). And I figured Hemlock would be around a lot at the beginning, so I drew him. *shrug* No huge rhyme or reason I guess. :)

You mean that the pictures that you made aren't the updated ones?

In any case, I like how Shal's ears aren't longer than Meri's daggers, though she doesn't quite have the Pathfinder elves' eyes. Easily fixed, though, I guess...

Yeah, I wasn't exactly sure how much white we're supposed to see in the elves' eyes.. I just kinda guesstimated to the point that I thought it looked cool. :) Who knows, maybe different elves have different sized pupils.. ?

I'm pretty sure, judging by Meri's eyes, the answer is, "Non existant", but, yeah, your excuse sounds good.

For elf eyes, we'll be looking at making the whites not there. Their eyes are more or less one solid color, be it dark blue (in Merisiel's case) or green or violet or whatever. We're still kind of working that part out, though. I'm sure they DO have whites to their eyes, but normally you can't see them since their irises/pupils are so big (and thus, they gain a +2 on Search and Spot... even though I know iris size has nothing to do with vision in that way, it's a cool external way to show off the racial bonus). In any event, your picture's pretty close. I'd just expand her iris a bit more, and maybe make it a little bit more brightly colored.

We've got another picture of Shalelu coming up in Pathfinder 3; a full body shot. And a full body shot of Hemlock in Pathfinder 2.

AND: For the record... fan art rocks. Keep it coming!

Gotcha.. I made an updated version. Hopefully it's a little closer to how it should be. :)

Vision quality might not work that way, but Low-Light Vision sure does. So it still works.

Nice! Please keep it up, Grant. :)

Woah...these are awesome! I plan on using both when I run the campaign soon. I like 'em better than the ones that were included in the bok. Excellent work, especially on Shalelu (her elf ears are perfect; I like elves with long ears, but the illustration in Pathfinder made them almost too long).

Don't let anyone discourage you; keep posting!

These are awesome!!! Keep it up man!

Great work on these!

Thanks for the nice words. :)
I'll definitely post some more.. Might be a day or two before I get the chance to draw 'the next batch, but I will for sure. Glad you guys like 'em!

Love the art, keep it coming!

Here's a Pathfinder character drawing I did for one of my PCs -- he's playing an elven druid.

Beautiful work G! I really dig your elf druid.

A nice clean bold style; you should be very proud.

Your style very similar to the styles I like! Nice stuff. Definitely keep us posted on more.

Ah-hah! I stalk you now on DeviantArt! :D

I like your work - very clean, looks like it could spring into animation at any second. :)

Awesome work!

Thanks for the nice words, everyone!

My PCs (there are six total) are all trying to get me to draw their characters, so I'm sure there will be more to come shortly. heh :)

Very nice line work. Really nice.

Now I'm going to complain. The picture looks a bit washed out. I messed with it briefly in paint.net (lightness/contrast & hue/saturation) and got it to "pop" a lot more. There's not a whole lot of contrast in the picture you posted, so it ends up looking slightly muddy.
Now I'm going to go back to praise. The line work and colours are really good. :)

Yep, that was done on purpose. I was going for kind of a foggy, moody look in terms of the color scheme. :) I didn't want it to be too bright and colorful.

Fair enough!

If your portraits had been used in the adventure instead of the current ones (well, Sheriff Hemlock is done in a naturalistic style in the Player's Guide, which I generally prefer) I would have been very happy.
Great job!
Keep cranking out all the other ones, that way I can have pictures I can show my players, which I've withheld doing so far because I wanted to find alternatives that were a better fit.

I generally like the art in PF#1, but I agree, keep it up, I'd like to see more from you!

I think this art is well done and interesting!

Thank you for taking the time to draw and post the images.

Thanks, guys! :)
I'll definitely be drawing more - probably in a couple weeks. Been set behind a little bit due to work, but my PCs are buggin' me to draw more, so hopefully soon. heh

Wow, I would love to see more of your work as Pathfinder progresses.

And thanks to Eric and James and crew for allowing such on the message board.

This gives me an idea regarding Elves, Half-elves, and eyes:

Elves - you can ONLY see the blacks of their eyes, their pupils fill their entire eyes, no colour, no whites;

Half-elves - you can see both the colour, and the pupils of their eyes, but you can't see any whites - DM G's Elven Druid demonstrates this very well (if he were a Half-elf);

Humans - you can see whites, colours and black pupils.

So, in effect, Half-elf eyes are half-way between Humans and Elves with regards to visible whites, colours and pupils.

I'm a big fan of both this art and the stuff in the module. The more the merrier!

Your Druid: I like the jacket, and that he's not just some buckskin-wearing elf; druids seem useless because they don't like civilization. Y'know, the whole not-just-medieval but rather stone age quagmire that rangers and druids get pulled into (glorified barbarians).

This guy seems great in that he's got all the gear Aragorn might have, could go into a city but just prefers nature. So one can like nature and still have nice stuff!

As for the eyes: I like the idea of having gambit-eyes, with color. it's cool.

Silver Crusade

very nicely done, concider them "copied" for my game, as I like your Belor (btw is it pronounced Baylor, Bell-or or Beh-lore ????) & I really like your Shalelu

hope to see other works of characters & such on here in the near future!!

Any chance you've done Nualia, headshot at least??

You know, most of the time I see someone post fan art and I think, "o no, not another one."

But dude, your stuff rocks. No really! I honestly would really like you to submit your work to Paizo, WOTC and others. THIS is the kind of character art I WANT to see in a product.

Silver Crusade

thanks James

thought it was that way but you never know with names

Your artwork is truly really cool. I like the style.

Thanks so much for the nice words, guys. :) I definitely haven't forgotten about this thread -- just been out of town and busy with work. Hopefully I'll have more to show soon!

Just found this thread, and I gotta say wow!
I'm also fond of sketching stuff for my players, usually their characters or NPC's that I have made up. So I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into it (but like you, I just can't resist drawing stuff).

I was really dissappointed by th artwork inside of Pathfinder. Not the maps and stuff, but the characters. I really don't like the style of most of it.

Yor stuff, on the other hand, I love. Paizo should snatch you up immediately (maybe they have already).

Quoted for truth!

GRANT! Love your stuff!

FOR THE LOVE OF DESNA.. Get Ameiko out of the trailer park that the other artist put her in, and redraw her! Pleeeeeeze!

Seriously, you should have gotten the business of drawing these characters. I'd really love to see your version of Ameiko. She's one that suffered the most.

I agree that some of the art in Pathfinder 1 doesn't fit the style of the book. Pathfinder 2 is a HUGE step closer to where we're heading with the art style. There's no "cartoony" art in there, really (except for Kyle's ghoul in the Foreword). At least, it doesn't look cartoony to me. I can guarentee that some readers won't like it or will think it's cartoony, simply based on the fact that "cartoony" means different things to different people, though.

Well, I can't wait to see it!

By the way, Kyle's art is always welcome in my book. He may have a cartoony pen (he does), but he has a great way of rendering our favorite monsters in his unique style.

Yeah, and I think the Foreword is (and should be) different. It's your introduction to the product and you're editor-in-chief of the line. If someone can't differentiate between a lighter illustration on an introduction, and actual in-game art work.. Well, they're probably the sort of individual who needs to find something wrong with the product in order to convince themselves that they have discerning taste.

Anyway, my comments about Ameiko don't diminish the overall product, which I can already see from Chapter #2 will only get better.

My Voice to the Chorus! Those are very good! Keep up the good work, and give us a regular fix of those!

By the way: I love the part about elven "Fremen" eyes.

Silver Crusade

the sketch of the toad king in the forward in Pf #2, made me go Huh?? Not a Huh, oh that sucks, but huh, ha ha ha can't wait to read what that is about.

Now I've just skimmed the pdf, so I couldn't tell yah what exactly the toad king's purpose is, but it's stuff like that makes Pf a great product.

I for one love the artwork in the Pf books, as long as the style is similar to what Dungeon was, I'll be happy, one thing, among many of course, I do miss about not having Dungeon to look at each month, was the artwork used for various NPCS & other stuff.

Any new pieces of work, Grant?

RM

Hey, guys -- thanks again for the nice words. :)
I'm still desperately trying to find time to do more Pathfinder art. I'm just busy with a million things (I'm doing the MN FallCon convention this weekend, working on the latest Topps LOTR card set, couple freelance graphic design things, etc.) but I will - even if it kills me - eventually do more D&D fan art! Heh.. my PCs keep buggin' me about it too.
