Huzzah!! Excellent, I'm glad to wrap that one up. How did each of the factions do with their goals? And did we earn any prestige points? I feel the mission was a success, but from the sound of it it wasn't a complete win on paper. I'm always just please to come away from a scenario with my character intact and that's not come down to a near-TPK. Thanks Deevor for sticking with it to the end, especially with all the home improvements you've had going on in RL. Especially since, from what I've seen, once online games stall for one reason or another, it's really difficult to get them going again, if at all. And thanks to Roary, Talinthas, and Tiasar as well, great characters and I'm glad we all stuck with it. I've played a couple espionage-type scenarios now with Crar and I've decided, he doesn't make a very good spy. But, he's fun to play. I might make a more-rounded character for these scenarios that have more social interaction.

Yeah, think we could all use a refresher: Venture-Captain Heidmarch's orders to us: At this point, Venture-Captain Heidmarch removes some bronze badges from her pocket ands slides them onto the desk, they shine in the fading light of the day and the flickering torches, but you notice several are flecked with dried stained blood. She looks across to you, her eyes hardened and steely, “Those specialists aren’t going to make it to Riddleport. You are. I want you to pretend to be the Aspis Consortium agents Jenk requested. Do as he asks, but only to keep suspicion off of you until you find out where the cult of Lissala is hiding. Once you know that, I need you to do two things. First, sabotage the Lissalan safe house as completely as possible. Second, throw the blame for the sabotage onto the Aspis Consortium." “How you complete these tasks I leave to your discretion, but I want you to keep murder to a minimum. One of the Lissalan cultists is feeding us information, and I don’t want to risk you killing this valuable source. Furthermore, we want the Lissalans to remain alive so they can turn their full ire against the Aspis Consortium. Once you’ve accomplished these two mission objectives, return here.”
Jenks' orders to us: "You did well, now I have something more for you to do. The consortium wishes to make allies with some Lissalan cultists, take these items as agift from the Consortium to them here in Riddleport." he smiles at you. Taking a paper from his desk, he hands it to you, "A message from no less than the Spider, so I would ask you to deliver the items to the Lissalan cultists underneath the Seven Needles tattoo parlor. It will enhance you reputation and influence within the Consortium."

We're back! Entering into the vaulted chamber, Crar takes in the bizarre scene. The lashmistress, with her fire-barbed whip, smacks of magic, but Crar is unable to determine its ken. Crar turns to the others. "Well, looks like we found 'em. Why don't we deliver the goods and go?" Under attack! Crar rushes forward to help protect the warriors at the front. Pointing at the automaton, he hurls a lightning arc at it, hoping to put it off its footing. Failing that, he starts to summon a prayer to summon fire. He watches the attack intently, as the automaton wallops Roary and Talinthas appears to lay in with a true strike. Move to N22. Hurl lightning arc at the construct. Hoping it isn't bolstered by electricity.

I was thinking that we've been doing pretty well considering only half the party calling in, we must be nearly there. When Deevor can pick up the game again, what can we do to help speed up the rest of the mission and wrap up the scenario? What's our plan? I say we try to follow the chanting, they must be having a church service or something, and I'll bet the chief priest will be there too. Let's hand over the holy items and beat a quick retreat, I think we've done enough damage to put apsis in a bad light, let's just get out before they see through us. Head straight for the ships and hightail it out of Riddleport.

Sure, let's see what's behind door number one! Crar cocks his head, listening to the chanting. He hadn't put two and two together before, assuming that the chanting was originally coming from the cultists the group found earlier. A bit more wary, he keeps a sharp eye out for any signs that we've been rumbled. Perception check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Crar takes a look around the chamber, primarily to determine that there aren't any lurking threats. "It looks pretty clear to me, I don't think there are any Lissalans lurking about here. Let's say we... oh ho, what's this?" he exclaims as he spots a strand of prayer beads while looking under a mat. "We could use these, I think." He holds on to them. Not seeing anything of immediate threat, Crar casually walks up to the runes engraved on one of the walls and takes out a dagger. He starts to deface some of the runes. He's curious about the strange smell, but can't quite place it. Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 Knowledge (nature) 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

The Serpent's Skull campaign I GM on the site will soon be completing Part 1 of the adventure path, and we will be looking to recruit a couple more players before moving on to Part 2. If you would like to join us then don't hesitate to get in touch, either respond to this on the thread or by PM. Here is the url for the thread: CrazyHedgehog's Serpent Skull Come explore the jungles of the Mwangi Expanse! Or perhaps you'd like to try one of the new classes being playtested for the updoming Advanced Classes Guide. Or even, try out one of Dreamscarred Press' psionic classes, updated for Pathfinder and with new core classes. I've not had an opportunity to play one, but I think the aegis and marksman classes look pretty cool, even if psionics isn't your thing.

Let's see, that would be to deliver a message from the Spider to the Lissalan cultists along with the three treasures we picked up as a gift of goodwill from their friends the Aspis Consortium? If only there were a way to put a bomb in the treasures so that they blew up after we left them with the cultists. That would really leave them with a bad taste in their mouths in regards to Aspis. I'm happy to move on. What were the coordinates for that next area on the map - T23? Crar takes one last look around. He wasn't able to match any of the runes with marks on the wands, so perhaps it was best to move on. "I think we've gleaned all the information we're going to get from here. Perhaps it's time we finish what we came here for and flew the coop before things catch up with us." Crar definitely feels like he's starting to become paranoid. He's afraid of saying too much about their true motives out loud - this is a dark place, who can tell if someone might be listening? He keeps his eyes peeled, darting to the right and to the left as they go along. Perception check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Sorry GM, thought Crar's Spellcraft result was better than it actually was, dice roller really let me down there. But Roary did have a good point about whether the wands have any ownership marks on them that might link them to either the cultists we killed or anyone else we might meet. Either that, or could the same be done with the rune on the chest where we found the first wand? The delay pain wand might have no relation to this agent amongst the cultists' cell, but it's a plausible theory and might help us to avoid blowing their cover. If we haven't killed them already. Heh, we're not great at this undercover thing, are we? Is it too late to draft in Pathfinder Agent 007?. Just about the second wand, regardless if we work out the details, I think the fact that it was by the basin and had a note regarding its use argues against it being used by our agent ally. More likely it was used regularly by the cultists.

Crar helps with examining the second wand. Then, responding to Roary's comment, he says "That's a good point, Roary. Can we work out which is their mark? Maybe we ought to check the bodies back through there, make sure we didn't chop down the wrong person." He starts examining the runes, looking to see if there are any corresponding marks on either of the wands. Crar judged ill in taking the wand, and the blast of flame really cooked him. Beating out the flames, he ruefully looks at the letter and the wand. Sadly, the squiggles mean nothing to him. Still, it might be worth something; surely someone in the Pathfinders should be able to read it. He's not sure he likes the look of the wand, either. He takes out the slim healing wand, looking at Roary questioningly. "I may need some healing before I carry on much further, I really got cooked as well." Not knowing what else might be found here in cultist hideout, Crar takes advantage of the wand to make sure everyone is ready for another fight. After all, isn't it the job of a Pathfinder, to look after one's brothers? After healing himself and Roary, he turns his attention to Bedmyr and Talinthas, before finally looking at Tiasar. "Tiasar, what about you? Those cultists really did a number on the rest of us." Crar makes sure Tiasar is alright to go before thanking Roary and returning the wand to his belt. "Thank you Roary, we wouldn't have gotten very far if it hadn't been for your wand. We really owe you. If we scrape together enough coppers from this job, this is the first thing I'll be investing in." Heal the others with the wand: Bedmyr CLW wand 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

The last cultist touches his symbol and a dark flood washes over Crar, leaving him drained. The shaman drops to one knee, weakened, then braces himself against the wall to lever himself back to his feet. He draws out a potion from among his gear, unstoppers the cork and downs the contents. Then, he finally draws out Roary's wand. "Eh, Roary, I think I might have need of this myself." Will save 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

"Certainly, Roary. I have your wand here." Concluding his investigation of the bodies and of the cultists, Crar produces the barbarian's wand from a feathery fold of his cloak. As am I. I was thinking to throw a thunderstone into the room, expecting the tiefling at least to be a spellcaster, but didn't want Roary to be caught in the blast radius and be deafened. Seeing the coin flinging into the darkness, its light is suddenly extinguished by blackness. Crar harrumphs and, gripping his scimitar, waits for any enemies to emerge from the dark. Well, if I still have an action left, ready action to attack anyone not from the group trying to flee. If I wade in, I figure I'll only just end up hitting another party member or something. Readied attack with scimitar 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (12) - 2 = 10 incorporated -4 penalty for attacking to inflict nonlethal damage only.

Faced with the wall of darkness, Crar hurls his coin with the light spell cast upon it into the black. Hope this works, he thinks. Then, he looks for a likely target to zap with a lightning arc. In the back of his mind, a thought keeps tugging at him: aren't we supposed to leave them alive? So he yells out, Remember! Jenk just told us to rough them up a bit! No killing!" For a move action, Crar will throw the coin with the light spell on it into the middle of the room, I'm hoping it will dispel the darkness effect. Then, if he can see the tiefling, he will try to zap him with his lightning arc ability. I'm gambling that the damage won't be enough to drop this Dr. Doom completely.

Ha, if we rolled initiative twice, does that mean we get twice as many actions? Okay, maybe not... Seeing the veil of darkness fall around Roary and the cultists, Crar moves up closer to the edge of the dark. He reaches into a pocket and draws out a coin. Before tossing it into the darkness, he calls on the spirits of nature to bestow light on the stone to counter the darkness. Then, throwing it into the dark, he stares intently, hoping to get a glimpse of what the group is up against. Ok GM, is it possible to change my action then? Instead, can Crar move 10feet to Q12 as a move action, then as a standard action draw out a coin and cast light on it. I want to throw it into the darkness, though I imagine that would be a following round action. I'm hoping it will be enough to dispel the darkness, but if not at least it should bring the light level up to dim light, right? Assuming this is after the surprise round and our presence is no longer a surprise. Crar creeps forward, drawing his scimitar as he does so. He watches the horned figure warily, waiting to see what he does but suspecting magic might be at play here. If that is the case, Crar is prepared to step forward and disrupt the man's spellcasting. "Easy now. Just back away and put your hands up slowly, there's no need to fight us." Step forward 20feet to S12. Assist Tiasar's prepared counterspelling by preparing an action to attack the stranger if he tries any spellcasting, but use flat of blade to inflict nonlethal damage only. We have orders to trash this place and put the blame on the Aspis, but there's no need to slaughter everyone. At Roary's words, Crar's hand strays to his scimitar, but he doesn't yet draw his blade. He hears the hurried footsteps, and tries to gauge their origin. He also takes in his surroundings, noting the torches and looking around for any other magical effects. GM, I'm happy with Crar's current position, but more fighty types like Bedmyr or Talinthas might prefer to be placed ahead of me; that's alright too. I'll ready an action that Crar draws his sword if the group is attacked or threatened. Initiative 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

At Tiasar's words, Crar carefully peeks at the creature. Then, when he realizes he's not going to share Bedmyr's fate, he extends an arm and flings another bolt of electricity at the creature. At the same time, the centipede continues to attack. As before, Crar uses lightning arc: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7; damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Also centipede attacks as before: bite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10; damage 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2 plus poison. Crar does not avert his gaze this round.

However, the centipede seems to be struggling to pierce the monster's thick, scaly hide. Bite attack against the creature. centipede attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 Crar moves a bit forward, still trying to avert his gaze from the creature as he moves. Once in place, He points at the creature and an arc of electricity shoots out at the monster. Move to square Q11. Use lightning arc as a ranged touch attack against creature, 13 to hit for 4 points of electricity damage.

Bedmyr! What horror is this? Crar obviously didn't take the creature behind the bars seriously enough, and is momentarily stunned to see his friend Bedmyr turned to stone. Then, at Tiasar's cry he grasps an earthen amulet and begins summoning a creature he hopes will help to deal with this monster. Map is fine GM, though I do think I had misread the map and description, I was thinking the monster was ahead of us at the corner. Crar's action is as before, will spend the round to cast summon nature's ally I to summon a giant centipede. Will put the centipede at T8 if possible and have it attack the creature, biting and poisoning. Plan for next round is to zap it with lightning bolt domain effect, though Crar will try to look for any way available to target the creature without looking directly at it. Tiasar, I like your idea. Would it not be like an extremely close illusion then? Perhaps the monster would gain a bonus to see through it, but maybe the creature doesn't have that kind of intelligence.

He tries to work out what type of creature it might be, as he grasps one of his amulets to start casting a spell. I take it that the creature is around the corner from where we are standing on the map? Crar will take a double move for 40 feet which should put me just to the left of Roary. Plan for next round is to swap out produce flame spell to spontaneously cast summon nature's ally I, and summon a giant centipede to attack the creature.

Crar allows the others to examine the magic, though his ears prick up when he hears Tiasar mention the wards might be divine magic. He has a look himself to see if he can contribute any of his knowledge, but he is also intent on the sounds Talinthas says are coming from down the corridor. Crar keeps his eyes peeled, checking all around to see if the group has been followed or if they are being watched as they enter the seemingly abandoned tattoo parlor. On entering, he notes the marks of traffic across the dusty floor. Perception check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 . He also spots the concealed door. Perception check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 . Then, standing up, he takes Roary's advice and makes sure his Aspis badge is prominent on his feathery cloak.

Apologies for my absence last week, had a few different things that prevented me from getting recreational time on the computer. With Talinthas' prodding, Crar agrees to head towards the tattoo parlor right away, the better to get all this done. As he walks, he secrets Jenk's ring in an inner pocket. Then, turning to the others, he asks: "Any plans for how we'll handle this cult? Do we go all out from the start or do we try to get some information from them first?"

As Jenk looks over the retrieved items, Crar bides his time. When the Aspis boss is distracted, the shaman slowly slides his hand forward and pockets one of the personal tokens Jenk has lying about on his desk. To cover his move, he almost knocks over an ornamental paperweight off the desk, catching it and replacing it. As Jenk looks over, Crar just smiles sheepishly. "Sorry, sir. I am a bit clumsy." He takes a step back from the desk, looking embarrased. As he takes a step back, Crar's eyes dart around to the others, gauging whether or not they've seen what he has done. Ready action, if Jenk is looking distracted and intent on other things, Crar tries to pocket one of the tokens as above. Bluff check to help cover his move and make it look like he's doing something else. Bluff 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
It's a pretty lame bluff to go with a pretty average dice roll, but couldn't be more pleased with the sleight of hand check, can only hope it's enough.

No, it's okay GM. I'll have a think about alternatives - see note. Also, having gotten some rest have we had time to renew spells? GM Note: Apart from the tokens Jenk seems to have scattered on his desk, are there items that would be readily identifiable as Jenk's that could be used to better impersonate him? Would they be any closer to Crar or easier to purloin, perhaps while Jenk is distracted looking at the items? Perception check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

I guess that means then that we didn't have an opportunity to check Jenks' office during the night. What about during the day? The man's gotta go for a comfort break at some point. As per previous post, is there any chance of an assist from Tiasar re silent image of one or more of the tokens Jenk had on his desk, before we go into the office? If I was to attempt a swap with the real thing at some point while we were in his office, would that be a Sleight of Hand roll? Crar follows everyone into Jenk's office, standing near to the desk again but not saying much this time. Last time, everything he said seemed to turn out pretty disastrous, so he's happy that Roary is taking the lead in reporting. One of his hands is cupped, as if he is concealing something. Crar laughs heartily but comradely at the exploding powder and the looks on Bedmyr and Jaquadue's faces. With an interest in alchemy himself, he notes to Bedmyr, "Remind me to ask you about more about that powder in the morning. It looks like it would be useful stuff. In the right amount, of course." As the bottles of whiskey are being passed around, Crar takes a swig and nods at the house. "So there are places to stay here? It's pretty late, can't really be bothered finding somewhere else this late to crash this late in the game. Besides, we'd be ready here to report in when we Jenk comes back - it's good to make a good start with the boss, you know what I mean?"

Crar notices the chill in the air and the Aspis goons trying to keep themselves warm. "Here, maybe this will help warm things up for us." He grasps one of the amulets at his throat and utters a short incantation. A ball of fire appears in the palm of his hand, and he juggles it back and forth between his hands. Doing so both warms up the night a bit and adds a bit more light to the situation as well. The beaky shaman tries to give his warmest, most winning smile. Just saw the result on the roll below, and I know this just isn't going to end well. Basically, cast produce flame to warm things up a bit, then make Diplomacy roll to aid Talinthas.

As the group leaves the temple, Crar muses. "Wasn't one of our objectives to find the cult of Lissala's safe house and rough it up a bit? And somehow put the blame on Aspis? We've had a good tour of the temples, but I don't think any of tthem belonged to this Lissala." Crar also takes an opportunity to sidle up to Tiasar. "Hey there, Tiasar. By any chance, are you good at illusions? Did you ever get a chance to take a look at those tokens Jenk gave us? I've got a couple ideas, but I could use your help.." he says conspiratorially.

Crar stands open-mouthed at this turn of events. He watches the departing Shorafa and wants to give his thanks, but considering everything else he has said on this mission has been disastrous, he keeps his beak shut. Shrugging his shoulders, he bends down and picks up the Aspis badge and puts it in his pocket until the group is outside again and he considers putting the badge on again. Meanwhile, he looks around at the others: "Well, I'm ready to go when you are." |
