Male Halfling Paladin 4

Its been years since I last rode in a canoe. Last one to the riverbend is a rotten egg

Cole grins widely and then attempts to set the lead to the first bend of the river, Gnasher sitting at the front, keeping it down, and the small mountain of gear between the two of them.

Strength test to send the canoe in the right direction: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I don't like not wearing the armour, but also don't much want to drown. Gnasher comes with us. Cole works to take off the armour and stow it in the canoe as best as he can.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

My apologies for not posting much. I had something like 5000 words of essays to write in a 1 week period. University is more important than a game, as much as it pains me to admit.

Will be up to posting again now.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

That possibly has more value for them than gold alone. Good thinking.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Whatever we are giving these people, perhaps it would be best if I were to present it to the ancestors? I know a little on how to comport myself with these people, and whilst I don't like this implicit taxation, it is a manner of the tribe supporting itself I suspect. Let us put it out of our minds, and remember the lessons of the Ice Titan. Not everything that appears to be easy is such, and thus we would do well to be more humble than we have been before. Don't you think?

Cole will add 33gp and 4 sp to the offering, if only because it it currently dead weight in his pack..

Sense motive Chieftan: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Sense motive Wench: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

When the young lady visits Cole for a fleeting moment, he will mutter discreetly to her. You would do well to remain in your own bedchamber my lady. The elf you are so taken with does not require company, and I am sure does not want it. That stands for all of us. We do not wish to cause an incident within your tribe.

To the chieftan, he asks simply What kind of gifts would most satisfy the ancestors?

Ah my apologies. My mistake.

Talon wouldn't be all alone of the frontline. There is a freaking Paladin with his trusty riding dog who would back him up. Even if he is a rogue.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

The Gods, in particular Iomedae give us the guidelines that we structure our lives around yes. The interpretation is not always too open, but they are guidelines for conduct, rather than specific orders. At least that is how it was always explained to me. Taking orders from a thing that might or might not be mortal, but is certainly from the Material Plane however is a completely different thing. It doesn't sit well with me.

Cole relaxes a little, explaining the knowledge that he was taught, and the philosophy of his life seems to ground him.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Wonderful. So even more than before we are not masters of our own destiny. Very well, let us get resources and a method of travel to this place. One of us should also get these symbols I suppose. Cole is visibly irritated.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Cole updated and ready to go. The only thing that I want to work out really is the spell that I have prepared. Any inputs guys?

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I don't have any traits on my sheet, and if they had been selected then they would be on there.

Does the extra feat count for current players? :)

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Dot, level up done. Not sure what to do with character just yet.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Yeah natural weapon etc are non-core, therefore you have the option of ranged weaponry, or two handed fighting only.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I want in. Pretty please.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

You havent gotten rid of me yet

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I have been playing with Tribute for 2 years now and still sometimes struggle with just how bonkers some encounters are. Well woorth it though. Just wish that Cole wasn't out for the count at the moment.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Gnasher runs. Surrounded by enemies, and without a master commanding him, he simply runs. Assume a withdraw action back the way we came, to the best of his ability

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Well all that Gnasher can actually do right now is growl at the wolves and hope Cole can stay on. He doesn't have any fancy boots of climbing, and without a master to actually command him, is likely to just run if I am honest.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Coup de grace

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Fort save to stabilise: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (9) + 8 - 3 = 14

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Gnasher, seeing his owner seemingly slain, and the battle still needing to be joined, leaps in, and goes for the nearest enemy

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Haha that would be very true indeed. although I am not sure how much he can do.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I won't be leaving the games. Despite me getting frustrated when the odds are so clearly not in our favour, I enjoy the games that you run GM Tribute, the stories are interesting, and the challenges also.
I just am very unused to having level 3 characters pitched against my by own estimation level 12 or more NPC's if that makes sense.

-Run the module through to the bitter end.
-Stick with the old school stuff.

-Maybe redo the elves vs dwarves game? :p

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I wont drop, just feel frustrated cause I was only just getting into the character

Well, we can call this. I know the CR level mindset is now the status quo. Players expect not to encounter something that can beat them anymore.

Cole can tell you this is not the first complaint of OP encounters I have received. It is best to resolve them quickly.

I have yet to spend the hours on the five level dungeon map!

I am not against OP encounters. However, when an encounter is so large as to be able to oneshot one of the parties tanks, leaving him bleeding out in the dust before he is able to act, then I have a problem.

And yes you are right, forgot about being flatfooted till I act.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

In order to get +16 to an attack roll, assuming 16 strength and a +1 weapon, then we are looking at a 12th level fighter, with winter wolves as allies. By my guess, we are looking at a CR13+ encounter. We might as well fall over and give up now.

Just being realistic, not giving up on the campaign etc. Just basic maths

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I am at 4 hp after that first round. At best I will be at 10 hp assuming a maxed out LoH. He can simply kill me next turn if he so wishes. Wouldn't even blink an eyelid I suspect.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

In for a penny, in for a pound. It might have just been better to give him the first bloody magical item he wanted. Cole could have gotten rid of the phylactery that he bought.

You roleplayed your character the way you thought was correct. There are consequences to every action. In this case, we get our butts kicked a little.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Cole winces as the outraged outbursts come from his party, but attempts to do what he can to salvage the situation.

To ask for half of whatever we recover to be allowed passage through your land is tantamount sir to highway robbery. Is there a chance that you would accept a change to the agreement and accept an equal share?

We are bearing the full brunt of any danger that might be at the location, and as has been mentioned by a couple of my colleagues, they would find the current terms you propose to be unacceptable.

I accept the terms of swearing on the gods, and will do that. Thus the negotiations are purely to do on the tariff that is being charged.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

Male Halfling Paladin 4

With such natural beauty, I can understand why you would walk the perimeters and take care of the place. I would do the same. We are but mere travellers, and have in fact been hired to look into a treasure trove in the vicinity. Perhaps if we were to cut you a deal, using some of what we expect to extract from the cold grips of the trove, you might see it fit to waive the toll for the moment? The items that we have at the moment are vital to our success in this endeavour, else I wouldn't attempt to negotiate. Cole attempts to come across as reasonable, not particularly wanting to hand anything over to the man.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Cole makes sure that his sword is ready, but otherwise makes no aggressive move, willing to hear the man out.

Good day, what brings you out onto these mountains in this kind of weather?

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I have to admit, I have lost complete track of who is in and out.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Must be one of those winter wolves we were warned about. Still, we don't have much choice other than to press on. Just keep your bow close, and the arrows loose in their quivers. Cole looks at the creature interested in it, but not aggressive.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Cole tucks in heartily, making sure that Gnasher eats as much of his fill as he is capable of.

Hammerhand eh? Rather use it against the enemies than against me he quips, but otherwise leaves the Dwarf to his own devices, unsure where he fits into the group just yet.

Once he and Gnasher are full, they quickly get everything they own into the wagon and get ready to move on and be the protectors that they have been hired to be.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Nope, Cole has said ring now.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Food and climbing gear at the very least seems like a reasonable kit list. As for the other questions, I am afraid that goes beyond my own understanding of the world. I suspect the winter wolves are probably magical in nature, otherwise they would just be known as normal wolves surely. Cole shrugs, and then begins eating, once again giving some of the best cuts of meat to Gnasher.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Fort Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

As hard as Cole attempts to stay away, it is too much of an effort even for him, and thus he too dozes into a stupor until his awakening.

After said doze, he retires early to the bedchambers, ensuring that he and Gnasher get a decent nights sleep after making sure all wounds were tended too. He awakens with an empty stomach, and a great desire to get the job done.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

The money is good, but there is more to the world and life than money. It is good to fight by your side though my friend. Cole smiles up towards Terion, for him the man is a giant, about as immovable as one too

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Cole smiles to himself upon seeing the signature of Merrie Seems apt, given her nature.

Looks like we don't have much choice huh? he signs with simple penmanship, and then waits for further instructions.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Leaving them to attack other travellers would be wrong it is true. However, slaying a surrendered enemy is another matter. I have no objection to taking them with us and dropping them off at the local law enforcement, although I suspect they will be put to death at that point. Let us move on however. There is no reason to stay when there are beds in Ferraburg with our names on them

Cole attempts to be useful now, fading back into the background as best as he can.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

Cole would rather they are let free, under the clear understanding that if they come and fight them again, then no quarter will be given. They only get one free pass as it were.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I promise that I am not trying to play lawful stupid. Please let me know if that is how I come across.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I am not trying to bind anyone with anything. I am not however willing to allow prisoners to be slain when they have surrendered. Call me stupid if you will, call me misguided, but we won that fight, and they have surrendered to us, and I will be damned if I will allow a senseless slaughter. If they attack us again, then fine, do what you will to them. I will help you. But until they have proven themselves unable to be trusted, then they will be treated with dignity. Understood? Cole is deadly calm as he says all of this, convinced in his cause.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

So long as people were to state when they are going (which round I mean), then block initiative would probably work rather well.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

I said that they leave alive. They surrendered and therefore are prisoners. How do we know they weren't under some magical control of that priests? Answer me that.

Male Halfling Paladin 4

What the hell are you doing to the Goblins? Cole might not have spotted exactly what was happening, but the change from helpless and cowering, to suddenly deathly still is a pretty obvious one. He goes to the redhead and attempts to get her to stop in front of him.
