Chelin will nod in agreement with Ekard. "I don't wish to kill except as a last resort. But we do need to make sure he knows that if she isn't safe, he isn't safe. Let him know that if we can get to him once we can get to him again." He pauses and grins a bit. "We should probably see what we can do about making it look easy, no matter how difficult a time we actually have. If it appears that we just barely managed to get close to him, then he may just hire a few extra guards and shrug our warning off. But if we show ourselves with a flourish, he won't be so confident in additional defenses doing anything but angering us more." I say we stake out the place for the moment and see what we can pick up about his coming and goings. If we can get him alone quietly, all the better, but I know I am not alone in being not very sneaky. If we can find out something about his habits that would let us set a trap for him, that would be pretty prime too. Maybe he is a gambler or a wencher or something and we can let out some hints of something that would get him in a place where he wasn't as guarded as normal.
You asking how we are going in reminds me of a long running in person game I was in. Every time we were trying to get the drop on someone at least one of us would turn to the others and ask if we were going in with a smiley face or a frowny face. Chelin frowns a bit and considers the question. "I do not wish to set out to be a murderer. I do have concern though that if we simply 'talk' to this man and warn him away, he will take it out on the girl in spite. I think we need to do a show of force so that he knows without a doubt that he could not hide behind his guard and be safe if he harms the girl."
When everyone else meets up the next morning, Chelin will share what he has picked up with the others, looking to Ekard who has proved quite knowledgeable about the underworld thus far. "It sounds like we may know who we are facing now. With that knowledge at hand, do you know anything about this Cran fellow? How big of a gang does he run with? What is his style?"
When Chelin has caught up to the others, he can add. "I worked with the guard and still know people there as well. I was trying to avoid talking with them if possible since the father seems to want to keep this real quiet, but if I don't mention any names of who we are helping, than perhaps one of them may have an idea of who this T.C. would be, or at least what groups run these kind of jobs."
Chelin will nod. "Indeed, lets get on our way. If we are going to be covering much of the town tonight though, I would very much like to pick up Justice to bring with us. If you do not mind, I will swing by the inn and meet you at the temple, once I have Justice I will be able to get there very quickly."
Chelin considers the mans' words for a moment before shaking his head. "I see no problem. These were not honorable men and we defeated them fairly. We are very different than thieves in this, we are warriors who are now keeping what they have won." Having thought through the ramifications on his honor of this with the serious look upon his face, the gnome suddenly brightens back to his normal self, a grin crossing his face. "Besides, that stuff won't fit me."
If we are taking 20 then I get a massive 22. Checking to make sure that the others are looking relatively unhurt, Chelin will pick up his Javelins and then set off to begin digging through the house along with the others. He will flash a grin at Railina's comment, giving a shake of his head. "No one could do that, mi'lady." He will consider Ekards words though. "Are there any elven gangs that run in the city that you may have encountered before?"
Chelin will hurl one last Javalin at the Elf above(assuming he still stands on my turn) before picking up his sword again so that he is ready next round for the dogs. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Attack
DM, can you repost an initiative order again along with where we are in the count as of your posting, just so we have an idea of who is coming up?
Wow, I hadn't expected to go first. Not wasting any time when he sees the sorceress is in danger, Chelin has his longsword out in a moment as he rushes forward as quickly as he can at the enemy nearest to Railina, slashing out at him. "Surrender, wretched kidnappers!" 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 Attack 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 Damage
Sorry I've been slow going the last couple days, I had a completely chaotic weekend and I'm just getting totally caught up now. Chelin will drop Justice off at the stables of the inn before he sets off with the others. He's always a bit uncomfortable when his pony isn't around anyway and with breaking and entering being quite out of his element, even with good cause, he will let those who have spent their life more in the shadows do the planning. Ekard's proposal sounds good to him however, and he will join the others, though he will add the suggestion "Maybe we should put someone at the front of the alley as well that we can all see, just so we have someone who might be able to alert us if you get in any trouble while you are inside?"
Chelin nods in agreement with the father. "I would not wish to put Railina in such danger as having them believe she is Phon. However, we should go and take a look at just where this building is located. Perhaps we can form a better plan then, some way to lure the enemies out. Also, not all of the thugs were killed, we could try and talk to the captured as well."
"Excellent idea, Ekard. Following up on the note is certainly the safest way to proceed and the most likely route to immediate success. We should not be afraid to follow this to the highest level we need to for success however. If we cannot assure the safety of Phon, then we have accomplished nothing for the girl."
"Indeed, certainly we will help you and the lady. Perhaps we could talk to her and help her understand the gravity of the situation? If she will tell us who the father is, it will certainly make ending such attacks much easier." The gnome will give Tony a bit of a respectful nod at his mention of honor, the man taking a step up in his book. "You seem to have a thought, Ekard. What is on your mind?"
The gnome will take some time to ensure that Justice is well taken care of bright and early in the morning and that she's had a bit of morning exercise before going to join the others. "Good morning as well, Ekard and to you too, Railina. It is quite fortunate that we have someone who is so skilled at bartering to ensure we get a proper price. I imagine it will only be more important once we begin to secure proper treasures."
Chelin considers the question. "Perhaps the Seekers of Forgotten Knowledge? I suspect that each of us would wish to uncover lore which has been lost, whether hidden beneath the ruins of the city, left on a hidden scroll, or simply locked away within our own memories." With that last bit he looks at Railina pointedly.
When Chelin returns he takes time to reign up Justice and ensure the pony has some feed before he enters the tavern, for all his grumping about the animal he obviously has a soft spot for the thing. When he enters, he'll look around, raising up on tiptoes until he spots the rest of the group and walk over. "Alright, the thugs in the clink, but no telling how long he'll stay there. Always my biggest gripe with the guard, too much corruption and too many strings to pull. Any idea what we are looking at here? If those boys were more then just a few desperate vagrants looking for some coin, then whoever was pulling their strings is likely to hear about it in a few days when they get kicked out of the gaol. That makes them likely to hear about us and what we did to their men, and I imagine that it may be a bit safer for us if they hear about it straight from our mouths first, yeah? Its better then them coming to have a chat with us while we are sleeping." He realizes he is being a bit grim and gives a grin. "Course who knows, maybe the toughs just thought they could strong arm people on their own, or were their guildmasters' least favorite."
Seeing that Tony has the lady safely at hand, and that Railina seems to be settled in the tavern and should be well secured there, Chelin will set off with Pol to deliver the unconscious and dead thugs to the guardsmen and let them know what has occurred. Chelin will be sure to be quite detailed in his report.
If the remaining thug gets away from Pol then Chelin will set to ride him down with his pony's quicker speed, but if Pol appears to knock him out then he will join the others with the girl, giving a glance to make sure that Railina is uninjured before speaking. "Greetings, Ma'am. I am pleased to see you safe, though I apologize that our rescue did not come off without a hitch." He glares down at his pony for an instant which seems to glare back up at him. "Justice here, is not so comfortable in the rain. We will have to practice this."
When Chelin's turn come up he will shake his head and eye his pony "Justice! That is no way to protect a lady!" He will then climb to his feet and attempt a fast mount. If he makes it he will use his remaining action to ride up to the assailants, if he doesn't it will take his whole turn to stand from prone and then mount. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Ride check Edit: Nope, darn, so full round to get up and back on the pony.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Initiative Chelin will call out. "Unhand her, rogues, or face the consequence." He looks to the girl. "Worry not, ma'am, we are here." Presuming that the robbers do not look intent to do this, Chelin will charge forward on his horse with his lance leveled at the rogue with the short sword to distract him from the woman. 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Acrobatics check for Justice 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 Attack roll to hit 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 Damage Alright Albrek! I am thinking that lady isn't going to feel too safe.
Chelin clops along through the rain on his pony, even the drizzle not able to bring down his spirits. He smiles warmly as he sees the in and even more so as he notes the others with a nod of his head. When he receives a hug(and is the perfect height for it atop the pony) he positively beams. He is just about to dismount from the pony and tie it up when Ekard gives out his warning. He nods his head and readies his lance. "Indeed, what sort of name would we hold for ourselves if he let such a thing happen? I will have an Oath of Protection for Railina as per the backstory, but I am not counting the bonus until its been 24hours IC that she hasn't taken any damage, rather then assuming she's been safe til now. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 Perception
Alright, I'm having a lot of trouble actually getting to sit down and really work on something today as RL is trying to be as difficult as possible, but what I was thinking for my background is below(it sounds kind of like my character may be a link to a few of you since he would know people from multiple districts having been a town guard). Background
From his first stories of paladins and the knights of old, he worked his best to try and live his life as they did in all ways. His word was as good as his life, he would not lie, protecting anyone who he could, these were all traits he lived by. The bigger folk thought it was amusing, a gnomish child dressed in armor he had gathered from parts, but it was worrying to his folks. When he was older, his only clear option was to join the guard of the city, a duty he served well and to the best of his abilities. It was never a position he was truly happy with however, too many times were guards expected to look the other way for a noble, or to simply ignore something for a greater crime. Still he served the guard valiantly until one day when he met a woman who had lost her memory after some sort of accident at sea. Chelin was instantly enthralled by her, though he couldn't be sure why. Perhaps, with her missing memory she truly is one of the maidens who needs rescuing from the stories of old in his mind. Seeing her plight, he immediately pledged himself to aid her in recovering. Since then, he has resigned his post in the guard, something that they were mostly relieved about now that they don't have to deal with his focus on duty now. It seems that the best way to resolve the sorceresses memory issues would involve either great magic, knowledge, or at least the coin to procure these from another caster, he has begun to reach out through the various contacts he has made from his time as a guard to try and form up a company, either with those he knew, or at least friends of friends. Just an idea, when I can I'll try and flesh it out a bit better and clean it up some and put it in my profile. Let me know if any of you have any ideas on it, or want ways that we may have met to change more, I tried to keep that part generic on purpose. Also, for a name I would probably suggest 'Seekers of Lost Knowledge' but that would be more an inside joke for my hope to restore her memory, as well as what we may uncover while delving.
I think this is mostly what my character is going to look like. My eyes are starting to cross after a long day, so I'm going to fix some of the formatting tomorrow morning, as well as whip up his mount then, but I think this is pretty accurate. I'll double check everything tomorrow to make sure its legit since I am pretty tired at the moment and may have made some mistakes, but if you catch anything, feel free to let me know. I had picked city guard as my characters background, I initially listed it as being on the docks, but if I am going to have roamed the city and be the glue that brings us all together, I have no problem with that at all. I'll have more details up in the morning, but its sounding good, everyone. I look forward to getting our characters together and starting to adventure. Oh, and I totally approve of the idea of a party name. No idea quite yet, but I'll think about it and toss in some ideas. Would love to hear what everyone else might come up with too. |
