"Are you referring to the smugglers, former navy who had been cashiered out, that we apprehended? I certainly hope they are not the ones that you are referring to as the 'nation's finest'; saying as much would be practically slandering the noble institution of the navy."

He then pulls out the heavy writ the party was given.

"As to the legality of what we did, I think you will find that we were acting within the confines of the law, as is only right - this warrant names us special deputies of the court, authorizing us to hunt and collect bounties on pirates in the Tandak canals."

Diplomacy(Aid): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11.

Once again, whomever is primary can have a 'Bit of Luck' to roll twice, and take the higher result.

"Break in? Steal? Nothing of the sort. Yes, we visited the chandlery, but we were let in. Never did we do anything so uncouth as breaking and entering. Moreover, we did not steal a single gold piece... which is more than can be said for the 'official' owner, a certain Earl, if the chandlery's ledgers are anything to go by..."

Diplomacy(Aid): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14.

Also, whomever is rolling the primary can have a Bit of Luck to roll twice and take the higher!

"Understood."

If it helps, Cashel is more than willing to act as a para-legal to make sure everything is filed smoothly.

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13.

Cashel shrugs, and pats himself on the shoulder.

"Completely understandable, however, we have found other... curious... irregularities... such as strong-arming ownership of a chandlery that was subsequently treated as a private members' club, and a contemporaneous long series of payments vaguely labelled as "gifts" to various naval officers over the course of a year.

Such actions are hardly those of one maintaining the highest ethical standards. Just as Iomedae convinced a regiment of mortally wounded knights at the Second Battle of Encarthan to stay their ground against a horde of wraiths until reinforcements arrived at dawn to rescue them, sometimes, risks must be taken in order to achieve the noblest of ends."

Knowledge(History): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17.

Cashel nods, and presents his writ.

"I am acting on behalf of Lord Tulian, who has become rather alarmed by some of the rumors circulating. Luckily, we managed to apprehend the pirates in the middle of shifting goods stolen from Count Orlundo Zespire, and the pirates were *wearing* at least one item known to have been personally taken from the local museum to General Arnisant by Earl Vernisant... which poses an interesting possibility as to their employer, consider the Earl is not on good terms with the Count."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17.

Or at least, that is the best quick summary of the facts that I could come up with.

Museum Director wrote:
She motions to another display. “The mannequins—I managed to assemble four full sets of armor to represent Taldor’s major armies in the Shining Crusade: the Phalanx, the Horse, the Navy, and the Knights of Ozem. Unfortunately, Vernisant learned that the Knight of Ozem’s helmet is magical, so he had it relocated to his private collection for ‘study.’"

Cashel nods happily.

"Well, that isn't quite the same as catching him red-handed, but the fact that a magical helmet he took for 'private study' has ended up here certainly seems suspicious... I am sure that the Director could confirm that it is the missing helmet."

Happily, I believe our remaining 'NPC of interest' was a magistrate...

Does the helm look like it might... belong in a museum?

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15.

Cashel strokes his chin thoughtfully.

"Unfortunately, without any direct proof, that is just hearsay."

A thought then occurs to him.

"Can you show us more of that 'nice kit', just in case there is anything distinctive?"

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Cashel automatically makes that Perception check!

"These crates appear to belong to Count Zespire..."

He then turns to the pirates.

"It might be wise to share what you know; if you are forthcoming, I see no reason not to put in a good word about your helpfulness. After all, I wouldn't want you to take the fall for the one who is pulling the strings behind your operation..."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19.

Cashel automatically notes the shadowy thing in the water.

"Beware! There is something else down there!"

He then directs a bolt of force at the archer.

Force Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Force damage.

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Thinking Jack has come up with a good idea, Cashel pulls out a blanket, and attempts to wrap it around the bottle, hoping that that messes with its ability to 'see'.

CMB: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (17) - 2 = 15.

Who knows? It might calm it down!

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25.

Cashel readily identifies the 'hidden' safe.

"Not sure what the current combination is, but given that note he left..."

@GM: Cashel would like to try whatever year is 890 prior to the current 'in game' year as the combination.

If that doesn't work, there is always the option of the 'Adventurer's Lockpick' - i.e. the party Rogue ;-)

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Cashel nods.

"Keep up the good work."

He then moves to take a look at the ledger, before moving into the office to take a look around.

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25.

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Cashel sighs.

"Well, we need to check this place out eventually, anyway, so we might as well give it a shot."

Tapping himself on the shoulder for luck, he strides imperiously up to the door and raps on it sharply.

"Open up! We are here on behalf of Lord Tullian, and do not want to take up any more time than is necessary on this inspection and data collection mission!"

He then brandishes the writ that he received at the start of the mission to further reinforce his statement.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22.
Diplomacy, Bit of Luck: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16.

I guess I will take the 22, before showing off my writ :-P

"Let's save that as a last resort."

Ironically, Jack, you currently have the best Bluff modifier!

We can always hedge our bets slightly, using Bit of Luck to roll twice and take the better option, and show the letter I acquired at the start stating that we were acting as representatives of 'Lord Tullian'...?

Dark Archive

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Evoker 1 (HP 14/14) (AC 10/10/10) (CMD 8) (Fort +3, Ref +0, Will +7) (Init +2) (Perception +15)

Cashel frowns.

"I am afraid that I would be neither good at bluffing the half-orc that we are meant to be there, or sneaking past them. Anyone else think that they have a shot?"

Horrifyingly, apart from our rogue, I think the best Bluff is a +1...

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13.

Cashel discusses the ways to water-and-barnacle-proof ships at length, using alchemical remedies, as well as ways to artificially age timber so that it is ready to use sooner.

Craft(Alchemy): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28.

"Certainly, I would be delighted. My name is Cashel O'Brien, by the way."

Having made his introduction, Cashel does his best to present himself as a knowledgeable scholar, commenting on the magical aspects of various exhibits, as he tries to recruit the curator to the Dark Archive...

Do any of your characters have a boon or vanity that grants a noble title, knighthood, or similar award?

If one of your other PCs has anything like that, you can gain the effect of it by essentially having the other PC write a letter declaring your current PC to be the noble's agent. Either of these may give you advantages when trying to influence notable citizens (or not, depending on the citizen in question).

As long as it really can be one of my other CORE PCs, after some digging, I have discovered that my Druid, Radagast the Brown, is officially Lord Tullian, a member of House Tullian.

It's not *that* much of a pain - we just need to keep playing the previous tier until we are an extra scenario in - so only start mixing-in 3-7's a game later than the minimum, 5-9's a game later, and 7-11's a game later. We just need to make sure that once we get to 'Eyes of the Ten', we have averaged our XP.

@Cortina: Nal is not running next - Paul is. Nal was asking for a scenario in order to start preparing for after the next one, at which point, we should all (mostly) have 6 XP?

I mostly suggested it because it was a later-season scenario, and is a Blakros scenario, so it would let me cross off a box on my DA card - I honestly don't mind what we play, though! It was just a suggestion ;-)

I would be equally happy with: 3-07 - Echoes of the Overwatched (1-5) - which is another Blakros scenario!
