Seeing that his healing has had little effect on the wounded, Carduus again bathes his allies in positive energy.

Seeing that a number of them were now wounded, Carduus relaxes his spiritual grip and releases a wave of his life force, directing it away from their enemies before moving forward into the room.

From his position at the door I think his channel should reach everyone but Viorr. Excluding all enemies in the area of effect with Selective Channeling.
Carduus heals 3 due to Fey Foundling.

Hi everybody. For the next few weeks my work/life balance is going to be very out of whack from the norm, and my posting will most likely be spotty and/or brief. I apologize for the disruption, and please feel free to bot me whenever necessary. My hope is that by the end of June I'll regain some equilibrium and be back to my regularly scheduled posting.

I should still be able to check here 2-3 times a week, but if I go quiet, this is why.

Round 1

Carduus crowds the door, attempting to shield Dev and the Eye from further attacks. He sees Viorr has charged up to the spellcaster and grunts in approval.

"Elfhammer! We've got three kobolds that need dealing with," he calls back to Taryn. He keeps his torch and tindertwig ready in case their enemies get any clever ideas about Viorr's glowing mace on the floor.

I believe allies can still move freely through my space. Holding off on healing in the hopes that I can clean everybody up with a channel or two after the fight.

Standard: readying action to light torch if the light on Viorr's mace is negated; Move: to door per map; Swift: none; Free: talking.

Carduus stands next to Viorr, nodding at his assessment of the tracks on the floor before glancing sharply to the south at Jirri's grumbles.

"Either we hurry up with that door or we cover up the light - or we stand here clear as day fer whatever's comin'."

Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

I placed everyone who hadn't moved on the map as best as I could figure. GM DB, I'm assuming about a minute has passed since the kobolds - if this isn't right, let me know :) Also I figure Carduus will just refresh his light spell on Viorr's weapon whenever it expires.

"I was thinking time might be an issue, given the racket we've made, Elf-hammer. Didn't seem to do the one who was wearing it much good." The medic looks to Beylinda with a scowl. "The Watch ain't in a real big hurry to look down here - that's why the sergeant hired us to do it. But technically we ain't signed any contract, so you're welcome to do as you please, Bey." He then addresses the rest of the party.

"Me and the 'Hammer got people gone missin' down here, so we're not goin' back 'til we know what's happened to 'em. You part-timers can come with us or not."

"We'll sort out the split once we're out of this hole," he grumbles to anyone who seems perturbed by his action.

Carduus advances behind Taryn, a shimmering distortion visible around his body as he moves. He shoots Dev a withering look before glancing around the chamber, then readies himself to provide aid should the elf be seriously wounded.

First goblins, and now kobolds. Someone's got an army of runts.

Standard: readying action to cast cure light wounds on Taryn if he appears grievously injured (below 1/2 total hp); Move: 15 feet to current position on map; Swift: none; Free: none.

I took the liberty of moving EE into melee on the map.

"Protect me from slash and skewer - I'll not die in this damned sewer!" The bandaged man's grating curse seems to bolster his spirits, if no one else's.

As he walks through the meandering tunnel Carduus digs out one of his two remaining torches and keeps at the ready to light it. Can't deprive the vanguard of their light, but getting caught in the dark myself won't do me any good either.

"Here, take it with you." Carduus mutters some incomprehensible syllables and touches Viorr's mace, which begins to glow with a white light as the illumination from Carduus's shield fades.

Casting light on Viorr's mace: duration 20 minutes (or until Carduus casts another light spell).

"One way looks as bad as another. There's been so much foot traffic through here it's impossible to pick out which way the other one ran. We've got goblins, these 'grimlocks', some wolves, 'n most likely kobolds to boot.

"Whichever way we go looks like we're gonna find trouble sooner rather 'n later."

The bandaged man hunches over and produces a chunky gurgling noise before spitting a foul glob of something onto the floor next to the grimlock's corpse. "Hold up, Elf-hammer - let me take a look." Tilting his shield downwards, Carduus quickly scans the stone floor around the party for any signs of recent egress.

"Up ya go, you two!" Carduus barks, waving his shield at Taryn and Beylinda's backsides. C'mon - can't let these newcomers think we're lackin' in grit!

Once the way is clear, the medic advances and hauls himself up the rungs into the room, moving to keep his allies between himself and the enemy.

Carduus will wait his turn and move up after the two aforementioned party members. If any of them indicate they're not going up, he'll squeeze by them rather than wait for the rear to advance.

Carduus gives a sigh before beginning to make his way to the front of the line. Once there he covers the glow of his shield with his cloak and waves irritably at Viorr's torch. Then, cocking his head, he strains to hear anything.

"Whatever you say, Elf-hammer," Carduus grumbles, finding Beylinda's eye and gesturing for her to move in front of him with a shrug. Fella seems to have finally gotten out of his own head. Let's hope he stays sharp if we find his brother in a less than ideal condition. The bandaged man waits his turn, refreshing the magical illumination on his shield before heading down the hole.

The Elfhammer knocks down goblins well enough - now if he'd only look to avoiding scrapes in the process... Carduus begins to look suspiciously at the floor. "Look to yer feet! The floor's drainin' away all the blood - or drinkin' it... I've got a bad feeling about this.

Carduus turns to face the remaining goblin but stops focusing on his own defense in order to pay more attention to his comrades. I hope the little bastard don't decide to give killing me another try.

Carduus will delay, as currently no one besides those goblins seems in dire need of medical attention.

Seeing his companions' reactions to the goblin's bluster, Carduus decides to take action. I can't let four goblins stop over a half dozen of us! The medic calls upon his curse, grumbling out an incantation to focus its power. "If you're to strike me, best think twice, lest ye catch my curse - and my lice!"

Thus protected, he quickly advances on the goblins and barks out a challenge.

Goblin:
"Then go ahead 'n kill me if you can!"

If you can understand Goblin, and your 10+HD+Wis mod is less than 16, you gain the shaken condition. A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked.

Does Carduus's Disillusioned trait count towards this?

Carduus lets out a rattling breath of frustration, though whether it started as a sigh or a growl is hard to tell with the phlegmy medic. Raising his glowing shield, he barks out to the goblins in their own language.

"I've got tracks here, a single set - someone trying to be light of foot. Seem pretty recent. They head this way-" Carduus walks west, bent close to the ground, "But don't seem to return." He glances upwards suspiciously, then across the length of the western wall.

"Assuming some sorta monster didn't snatch 'em up from the ceiling, I'd guess there's a hidden passage or tunnel here. Or else they were magicked away." He looks over to Kaine. "You any good at finding such things, scout?"

Einar Thorirson, Aspiring Condottiero:
The son of a successful Norwegian merchant, in his youth Einar travelled much of Europe with his father. It was Italy, however, that captivated his imagination, its burgeoning mercenary bands harkening back to the honor and glory of his Viking ancestors. Leaving the family business to strike out on his own at 16, Einar fought under the banner of Frederick III in the final two years of the War of the Sicilian Vespers, then later for the Ghibellines in northern Italy. In the latter conflicts he quickly rose to the rank of sergeant, having proven himself a capable commander of men, and he most recently served fighting against the forces of the Marquis of Ferrara.

The shrewd business sense and eye for opportunity taught him by his father has translated well to his current profession, and the Norwegian has proven to possess both a strong sword arm and a keen mind for tactics. He's generally cautious, having learned the value of the indirect engagement and outmaneuvering of an enemy typical of the condottieri, but he's willing to unexpectedly press an attack if he sees an opportunity with a big enough payoff. While not a religious man, both his upbringing and his employment have made him a firm opponent of papal authority; after all, if one is to bend their knee, surely it's better to do so before a king than a cleric!

Einar is currently between contracts and has grown tired of his middling rank and the endless progression from battlefield to battlefield; he fancies a more commanding role and a less nomadic existence. To this end he has recruited his own company - a small, dedicated band of men who served under him against Azzo VIII d'Este - with the aim of landing a private contract in service to a wealthy merchant or aristocrat, and he has come to Venice seeking just such an opportunity. After all, with a couple years' command experience under his belt and pay in his purse, perhaps he'll be ready to take to the field again - this time as a proper condottiero at the head of a proper army...

Carduus scowls at Dev's idea of 'fun', but nods nonetheless. "Agreed - the sooner we find out what's happened to folks down here, the better chance we have of gettin' to 'em before it's too late."

Carduus looks at the cigar-smoking dwarf in disbelief, momentarily shocked into silence. Fifty-fifty? With Dolom? He looks back and forth between the dwarves, trying to note any familial resemblance, while Electric Eye and Jirrik confer. He then clears his throat and puts his own phlegmy 2 coppers in.

"Ten percent off the top for Dolom, and after that each of we eight get an equal share of what's left. Agreed?" If this dwarf wants to give his share to Dolom, more power to him, I suppose.

Jirrik, it sounds like you're offering Dolom 50% of the take instead of 10%?

Also, as a note to our newcomers, the 'Recruitment' tab for this game is actually used for discussion (as the 'Discussion' tab is our group's gameplay, and actual recruitment took place in Storyteller Shadow's separate thread) - I was confused by all this when the game began, so just thought I'd point it out for you folks :)
