Brias manages to shake off further effects.

"Sorry. Sorry! I, er, have a thing with spiders."

Catching up and working on Brias tonight.

I'm sorry for my extended radio silence; the end of the year slowdown I was expecting at work did not happen (instead, I got the opposite).

Hoping things calm down after the holidays, and I'm still very excited to get into things with Brias.

Brias cannot make that perception DC even on a natural 20, so he definitely sees nothing.

Brias crouches low and looks around, but sees nothing other than the obvious.

"A local hunter went missing recently. I think it may have been at about this area, too."

The way you all have handled turnover in the ranks and kept this game going is commendable. I am genuinely impressed.

And I am sad about Sunny, too. That's one hell of a thing.

If it's okay with you, DM, I might adjust some of Brias' spells to feature some more high level healing/restoration magic?

Would anyone with some experience playing 1e mind glancing at my list of spells for me? I'm worried I may have missed taking essential spells through ignorance of the rules. Given the other characters in our group, should I have prioritized higher level healing spells, for example? Brias is a healer, both by magic and by natural means, but I don't want to step on anyone else's toes who spent valuable resources on healing magic.

Level 0 Spells (DC 14): Arcane Mark, Bleed, Dancing Lights, Daze, Detect Fiendish Presence, Detect Magic, Detect Poison, Grasp, Guidance, Light, Mending, Message, Putrefy Food & Drink, Read Magic, Resistance, Spark, Stabilize, Touch of Fatigue

Level 1 Spells (DC 15): Enlarge Person, Hex Vulnerability, Remove Sickness, Comprehend Languages, Mage Armor, Chill Touch, Beguiling Gift, Blood Money, Cure Light Wounds, Endure Elements (from patron)

Level 2 Spells (DC 16): Augury, Beastspeak, Boiling Blood, Callback, Bear’s Endurance (from patron)

Level 3 Spells (DC 17): Bestow Curse, Dispel Magic, Remove Curse, Polymorph Familiar, Protection from Energy (from patron)

Level 4 Spells (DC 18): Scrying, Spite, Phantasmal Killer, Spell Immunity (from patron)

I am very open to suggestion. I mostly just took things that sounded cool or that I felt maybe fit his flavor.

Brias sits down as he listens to Fulk. "And you think there might be someone at Ascanor who can help with," Brias mimics Fulk's gesture, "whatever's out there?"

He is quiet for a time, and he seems not to notice when Fox hops up in his lap. He begins idly scratching her head and thinking.

After perhaps half an hour of stillness, he looks down into Fox's eyes, lets out a sigh, and stands up.

"Yes, Fulk. I think I will accompany you, at least to the lodge. I could use a closer look at what's ailing my forest, and you could use the help, clearly."

He nods at Annick and drops his hex, his Kellid face melting away, replaced by strong half-orc features.

"After all. Our people should stick together out here."

Whispers of the Way

Early Morning, Toilday, 8th of Calistril

PCs: Brias and Fulk.
NPC: Drogeda.

As Fulk awakens and begins speaking to Brias about their quest, a short Kellish woman enters the front door. She is about to speak to Brias when she takes notice of the patient and his companion, Drogeda.

She matter-of-factly states to Brias, "Another late night, boss?" as she approaches Fulk to examine him. She is dressed in practical, plain clothes, and looks Fulk up and down with an inquisitive expression.

"Ah! Annik! Yes, this fellow was passing through the wood and crossed paths with one of its more inhospitable denizens. Fortunately, his companion got him here quickly enough. The ghoul fever itself has been treated, and now he's in the fun that is recovery."

To Fulk, he says, "Annik is my assistant. She is quite capable, and you can trust her discretion, insofar as you feel you need it."

Brias raises an eyebrow. "The Ascanor Lodge? What could you possibly want there? And at a time like this, when the wood is... what's the word? Agitated? There are more werewolves and there is more wrongness than I've seen in years."

Obviously, I've got a vested interest in playing along. :) Likely just an explanation of what you're up to will be enough for Brias. He's primed already, having seen changes to his home he doesn't like of late, he's looking for some way to head off the bad ju-ju.

Drogeda checks to see if he's still breathing. Satisfied, she looks around, and then looks at Brias.

"Guess I can camp out back. Out of sight," she suggests to Brias, who understands the implication very well: some of Brias's human patients might get a real fright to see her in the morning.

She motions to Fulk though, "Is he... alright, right here?"

She thanks the healer once, then takes her leave to rest for the night.

If Brias offers Drogeda a cot, she'll instead politely take it for the night (just let me know).

** spoiler omitted **

Brias speaks up, "No need for that. I have another cot in here somewhere. It will be a little, ah, cozy, but we will all fit."

Yep; Brias will offer a cot.

Brias gives Drogeda a glance, picking up on her sarcasm.

When Fulk tells him he's from Belkzen, Brias raises an eyebrow. A look of intense curiosity on his face, he leans in.

"Truly? You fled Belkzen Hold? My fath... I mean, my friend came from there, many years ago. Any who have gotten out of that place is welcome here. Whatever payment you or your friend" - he indicates Drodgeda - "may have had planned for me, you can keep."

Brias goes about making a quick plate of food. Nothing fancy. Some fruit. Dried meat. Day old bread.

He gives the plate to Fulk and asks, "You're from around here?"

Being around others of the people is almost enough to make Brias slip, but he keeps his mask up for now.

"I wouldn't say 'doctor,' but, yes. I'm the healer. I hear you punched a nightmare and lived to tell the tale. That was either very brave of you or very stupid of you, or perhaps a bit of both. No, don't sit up so fast. You're going to need to get used to going slow for a little while. Your body is doing a lot of work just keeping you alive at the moment. Give it some grace."

Brias will take 10 and hit a 22 exactly.

Doing his best to hide his anxiety, Brias replies, "I help all kinds. Please, come in."

He sets immediately about checking Fulk's wounds, pausing from time to time to sniff them and ignoring any looks he gets when he does.

"Your friend did not fight a werewolf," Brias says. "He fought something worse, but I can treat him. The creature you saw is called a leng ghoul, and your friend here has a particularly bad case of Ghoul Fever. It's not an easy or quick recovery, but he looks strong and you got him here quickly. He should be able to make it."

Brias mixes up a poultice and sets about dressing Fulk's injuries. That done, he puts water on to boil and gets down a delicate looking kettle made of some kind of porcelain. "You'll have to excuse the smell; the brew for this can be a bit pungent," he says, preparing a tea mixture. "It will taste like rancid meat going down, but it will keep him alive and, just as important, keep him from turning whenever he does die - someday in the distant future."

As Brias works, a small red fox enters the room and hops up on a chair, watching the proceedings quietly.

Seems like y’all do a good job keeping the RP going in between GM posts. I love it.

Okay, Brias is ready for inspection!

Sorry for the delay; I was a bit overwhelmed at the sheer number of options for gear. I worked out his backstory, spells, and hexes weeks ago, but I froze up when actually picking the stuff he would carry around.

GM, I know you have been asked this before and I apologize for the repetition: do you yet have an idea in mind for timing on your (and the group's) decision?

Query: where Brias is a healer and brewer of remedies, and where he has ranks in craft (for potions) and heal, is it useful to also have levels in profession for earning income? Or is that redundant where his profession is his healing/crafting?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am away on vacation, but I have Brias' backstory updated. I have his gear mostly selected (I used only about 1/4 of his funds on potions) and will get that punched in on his sheet when I get a free half hour, here.

Fair enough! I was between elements and endurance and flipped a coin to choose, so it is 0 issue for me to switch things up.

Okay, Brias' profile is now his character sheet and he should be ready for your consideration, GM. I need to equip him, but I would prefer to hold off on that step until knowing he's in the game and knowing how you would like to handle him brewing his own potions.

I revised his backstory to more tightly integrate with the happenings in the Shudderwood:

Backstory:

Brias was born of a loving union between his father, an orc deserter from Belkzen worn beyond his years, and his mother, a powerful human witch of Kellid descent. The two met in the wilds, as one might expect, and found in each other kindred spirits. Over time, his mother taught his father witchcraft, and the two of them used their magics to survive in seclusion.

Brias was witchborn, inheriting magic on both sides, and it was only a matter of time before he attracted a familiar of his own. He named his new companion simply "Fox," delighting in the simplicity of a name that also described the thing named. Fox was a fox, the fox as far as Brias was concerned, and his young mind was proud of his cleverness. Once Brias matured, he could not bring himself to change the name. And so Fox remained Fox.

Brias yearned to make a difference in the world, and in the Shudderwood, where werewolves prowl the night, no one turns away a healer, so he made his way there. He set himself up in a small hut and treated the humans who came to see him. To avoid the prejudices so prevalent in Ustalav, he made judicious use of the disguise hex to appear as a normal human. Interestingly, he chose a face of Kellid descent, connecting him to his mother and helping him blend in with the other witches who make the wood their home (few though they may be).

Whenever he could, he helped out any non-humans who came his way. Those in the know may have heard of a loosely affiliated network of folks who would help non-humans in need, and Brias came to find himself in the network. Over a couple short years, he helped a lot of people.

Lately, though, the Shudderwood felt more on edge to Brias than usual (if that was even possible). He'd heard rumors through his network of people walking around with the whispering way on their lips, and he knew from his father that could only mean trouble. He took to traveling with his father's old falchion strapped on tight, just in case. Unless the tension broke, and soon, he feared something darker than werewolves might upend the home he worked so hard to build.

I am coming into this only knowing what was in the Carrion Crown Player's Guide and your intro, so if I missed any details, plese let me know and I will revise as needed.

I ended up switching to the Elemental patron, which changed up my prospective spells a bit. If I need to make adjustments to better fit the party before beginning play, I'm happy to.

Thanks!

Making this character has reminded me why I loved 3.5e when I first discovered TTRPGs back in college. I took the plunge and grabbed some of the PF1 books in PDF, and reading through them is like a pleasant stroll down memory lane (but with better art).

And this is Colorfoot's work in progress.

I used a Myth-Weavers fillable character sheet to organize my thoughts as I work through all the options for this character (which you can see here).

I will tweak his backstory to give him a good reason to join the party and I will figure out his gear. Once I've got everything organized on his sheet, I'll fill out his profile so it meets the game criteria.

GM, as he is a potion crafter, I would like to spend a good chunk of his resources on potions he made himself (if he's admitted into the game, of course). Would that be acceptable? I still need to familiarize myself with 1e's crafting rules.

As always, open to feedback.

Thanks!
