I don't typically RP in recruitment threads unless the GM says to (IMO it can clog up the thread, and sometimes overwhelm the GM), but I just wanted to confirm that I'm still around and would still love to play in this. I still need to plug a lot of the crunch into his profile but Baldric will be ready to go by the deadline! and, since I forgot to do it earlier...
This will be nate lange's submission. Fluff is done but mechanics have a ways to go. He's a stealth/skills and melee/tank guy. Starting at 2nd he'll have trapfinding too, and I may move towards switch hitting with a longbow as I pick up the combat style talents. As a human he'd also be one of the 'normal' characters that anchors the party. Out of curiosity, was there ever a ruling on variant multiclassing.
I've finished updating all my crunch. When you look at it you'll understand what I mean about being a decent damage dealer with a lot of flexibility... I have a handful of options for fighting style normally, plus with martial flexibility I can pick up any combat maneuver, great cleave, combat patrol, in harms way, spring attack or tons of other stuff... I'm planning to update the fluff some too, I just need to find the time to do it.
I'm not optimized for damage, but I can hit pretty hard and definitely have some durability (and with martial flexibility I can already adjust to different situations, and at 9th I'll be able to pick up specialization in whatever weapon I wield if I need a little damage boost). I use reach/combat reflexes like the player you're losing (and can add things like tripping to help keep the baddies off our casters). still updating to 7th
I've played half or so of the first book with this character, would love to get a chance to play some more. I'll need to bring him up to 7th level (and double check his archetypes and whatnot, been a while since I dusted him off). The idea though is that he's a fighter who trained in a martial academy that claims to have roots in an ancient Thassilonian fighting style- in addition to teaching him the language and history of Thassilon he learned a thoughtful/flexible style of combat with an emphasis on tactics. His primary fighting style is combat reflexes with a reach weapon but he's perfectly capable of others as well.
Alright... I'm not going to have time to rebuild tonight but I'm relatively certain that I'm going to build him as a Magus with the armored battlemage archetype, and that I'm going to take variant multiclassing for cavalier in the order of the guard (to really flesh out the bodyguard aspect of his schooling).
I'm having a little trouble finalizing how I want to build... my backstory is that I trained in a martial academy in Magnimar that claims to have its roots in an ancient Thassilonian (they made us study Thassilonian language and history along with our combat training, thus my campaign trait), and since graduating has decided to look for some freelance work instead of taking a position in some wealthy noble's private guard (much to his father's displeasure). He's the Han Solo kind of reluctant hero type. I was looking at the witch killer slayer archetype (the idea being that the school descended from one that trained soldiers to battle other Runelords' arcane servants). I really like that idea, and flavor-wise I'd bet it's pretty different than the current slayer, but mechanically they'd be filling the same role so I feel bad doing that, especially when there's other roles nobody's pitched... Another option I was considering is some kind of magus- maybe an armored battlecaster (the idea here being that the school came from one that trained bodyguards for wealthy/important Thassilonian wizards). Any thoughts/feedback? What is the deadline again?
I'm interested. In the interest of full disclosure I'm running this AP right now, but I can separate player knowledge from character knowledge. This is the alias I'm going to submit but I need to check that it uses the same creation rules, and I'll need to see if there are tweaks I want to make (or even major changes... maybe build him as a magus instead since more than half the applicants are non-casters...)
The reason they don't let you use a rapier and main-gauche with fencing grace (or slashing grace) is concerns over game balance. The high Dex requirements for two weapon fighting limit how strong you can be (and therefore how much damage each attack can inflict). The fear is that if you can deal damage based based on Dex you remove that limit. Something like a goblin becomes far more deadly- their rapier and main-gauche would only do 1d4 and 1d3 (for being small), but their +1 size bonus off-sets half the two weapon penalty and with a +4 racial bonus to Dex they can easily have +5 or 6 to hit and damage (just from the stat) at very low level.
GM: It seems like you're already reviewing characters... Do I have any chance of being chosen as I am right now? Would expanding his background make a worthwhile improvement to my chances? I don't really want to change my background but I could add more details: about my time in the military academy, about who my parents are and where they're from, etc.
I should be good for a little more than just melee damage... I'll have some battlefield control with a reach trip weapon and combat reflexes, and once martial flexibility comes online (at 5th level) I'll be able to adapt my fighting style depending on the situation (picking up improved trip/disarm/etc, or ranged feats, or stuff to shut down casters). A lot of my characters have sort of grand backgrounds... I really like that this one is simple and straightforward, now I'm worried it won't be enough though.
Oh, hey, good luck to you too! Did you find another home for Iozif? I made Baldric specifically for this AP (he's another character's dad and having been in this AP was part of that guy's backstory), so I leave him on the shelf and every once in a while if I notice a RotRL games I dust him off and try again. Usually with some minor variations.
Baldric should completely meet your guidelines now. Please let me know if there's anything that's missing/wrong/whatever, or if there's anything you'd prefer I rework. I saw your comment to Grizzly about a pre-existing connection to Sandpoint... I'm not certain how clear it is from my fluff but my idea for him is that he's sort of the Han Solo type of reluctant hero ("I'm not in this to save your city, I'm here for the money..." but somehow he can't stop himself from getting involved whenever there's trouble). If you don't like that idea let me know and I'll add a connection (maybe my mom was one of the orphans Koya Mvashti raised).
I really want to play this... This PC started at the beginning in a group that stalled and restarted more than once and never got through chapter 1 of book 1; and then, more recently, tried again in a group that started at book 4 and never really came together (we had some interesting RP but I don't think we even got to the first combat). I think I have my original 1st level stats saved somewhere... If I can find them I'll have the profile updated by tonight. edit: oh, and I just remembered I also applied as a replacement player for a 4th level party, which explains my current stats.
One question- I had VMC [magus] in two versions... In one the GM was going to let me take another arcana instead of spellstrike (since I'm a non-caster), in the other the GM ruled that spellstrike could be used to deliver touch spells from the magus spell list that I 'cast' off scrolls or wands. Are either of those acceptable to you, or would it be a wasted ability?
Baldric Moore reporting for duty! I've been accepted into three RotRL games so far with this character (two starting at the beginning and one in book 3) but for one reason or another all of them have eventually failed. Obviously, I'd need to do some serious reworking but I'd love to have a chance to play through the rest of the AP. Current build is lore warden/martial master fighter (a clever, flexible combatant with some skill support), but I think I could probably rebuild him as a slayer and be happy with him. I'll work on it some right now.
male Human, Slayer 1
"I'm not suggesting using any roads..." Baldric points out, "this whole plan hinges on being able to find teleportation scrolls- that's the only way we make it to Galduria before the giants do at all, and with it we could be there with plenty of time to alert the town leaders, start making a plan, and still get a full night's sleep..." Not wanting to waste any more time in committee, he adds, "We need the scrolls no matter when we leave; I'm going to go see how many I can find." Then he heads out to check any shop that might have any scrolls for sale.
male Human, Slayer 1
"You misunderstand me, Zaph," Baldric interjects, "I absolutely think we should intervene. In fact, I think we should head there now to warn people to leave or hide and to take stock of the town's resources to coordinate a defense... I just think we need to be prepared to withdraw once we attract too much attention. Maybe they'll be able to offer enough assistance and we can stop Teraktinus, but we need to remember that if we get killed there Sandpoint will unquestionably be destroyed."
male Human, Slayer 1
"Our safety is exactly why I'm suggesting this." Baldric says with a hint of a scowl, "we can't save Galduria, and that wouldn't be our mission. We can warn them ahead of time, which should spare lives; with our magical support their guard will be able to inflict higher casualties, and we can stay on the edges of the fight killing off foot soldiers. Without engaging Teraktinus and his pet we should be pretty safe but we can greatly diminish his soldiers so he has less protection when the time comes for us to fight him. And if we do enough damage to his army who knows, maybe they'll pullback and the town won't be completely lost."
male Human, Slayer 1
"They paused to destroy Ravenmoor..." Baldric reflects, "that means they'll most likely raize Galduria tomorrow..." The burly warrior sinks into quiet consideration for a moment as he runs through a few tactical scenarios- something his companions are accustomed to. "I wonder how many teleportation scrolls we could get our hands on? We could start a war of attrition against them; if we teleport out there we could magically augment their minimal town guard and then kill as many giants as possible before withdrawing. We could teleport back here afterwards to recover and check on preparations that night. The following day we could wind walk out to find them and launch a guerrilla attack- kill as many as we can as fast as we can and then teleport back again. By the time they reach Sandpoint their ranks could be greatly thinned..."
male Human, Slayer 1
I would love for us to have ready access to teleport (so, please, feel free to overrule this) but technically she doesn't... unchained summoner has an altered spell list that moves many spells (like teleport) back up to their normal spell level. I think they mostly just did it to stop some of the odd fallout that came up (like summoners being able to craft wands of teleport), but RAW unchained summoners don't get teleport until 13th level (when they get 5th spells). Baldric takes the flask from the sheriff and takes one long swallow before passing it to Zaph. "Not yet, no," he answers, "that's one of the reasons they're going scouting. Hopefully they'll be able to bring us a head count and an ETA. If we can find a good spot along their path we might try to face them outside of town but knowing that they're specifically after something in town there's no guarantee that Teraktinus and his dragon wouldn't just leave us to fight the giants and fly off to ravage the town with just the two of them..."
male Human, Slayer 1
"Yes, Belor," Baldric answers, pleased that for once he doesn't have to put on any airs, "It's bad news, as usual. The giant Teraktinus and his dragon are on their way here with a band of giants, or maybe only ogres, we're not sure yet. Shal intercepted a letter, they're coming for a raid, looking for something here in Sandpoint." "Shal is going to ride out with Lamb and Wolf to try to learn more, and I thought we might ask Veznutt and Ilsoari if they could think of anything they might be interested in... Brodert too, obviously. In the meantime, we should be working on a plan to keep people safe and protect the town."
male Human, Slayer 1
this is not going well... "Shayless, we will protect you and Luthien's child but that means that when threats arise we have to be prepared to ride out and face them. We'll return as soon as we can but until then get some rest." Baldric makes an effort not to sound too gruff when he speaks, though it stills come out somewhat stern. "Iozif, why don't you walk Shayless home. Please."
male Human, Slayer 1
"Any volunteers would be putting their lives on the line, yes. But, as you say Zaph, if we can make our selves big enough targets the dragon should focus on us, except for maybe a breath here and there and we'd try to bring only those tough enough to take one..." Baldric pauses again to consider the priest's concern... he's always been protective of others, its no wonder he doesn't want to let them risk themselves while we are... then continues, "we might need help if we try to fight them all at once, which is probably what we'd have to do if we try to meet them outside the city, but this is all based on guess work. The first step is for Lamb and Wolf to go with Shalelu and try to get us numbers and an idea of their route- then teleport back so we have as much time to prepare as possible."
male Human, Slayer 1
"Iozif is right, the first thing we need is information. Go quickly- find out how many there are, what types of giants they are if possible, and what route they're taking. I'm honestly not sure if the four, or five, of us can beat them in the open field... Teraktinus and his dragon would be challenge enough; if he has half a dozen stone giants with him we could end up in real trouble." Baldric thinks for a moment then continues, "If we can chose the place where we engage them, get Shalelu and some of the better archers in town hidden safely away in the trees, and maybe even talk Ameiko into sing for us from a relatively safe spot we should be able to handle it. If he's got more than a small band though we may need to rethink that... If the town is willing to contribute we might be able to get a scroll to summon extraplanar aid, that could make a difference..."
know(arcana): 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (14) + 18 = 32 "A red one, yeah," Baldric comments on Teraktinus, "thankfully it's only about 15 feet long from what I've heard. Still, we'll have to think about some protection from fear and from fire... and it'll be able to see through smoke at that age so they may try to use that for cover..."
male Human, Slayer 1
Baldric's scowl softens into a wry grin as his companions immediately start strategizing with him. we've come such a long way... the first time we defended this city, from those goblins, was such a mess: not one of them had any tactical sense at all, or much discipline for that matter... "The letter says 'several of the people'... we shouldn't read too much into the phrasing until Shalelu brings us her report of their numbers but I'd guess it's a small raiding party. Any decent archers we should try to secure relatively safe spots to fire from. We can gather flares and signal whistles for any volunteers brave enough to alert us to where the giants are within the city. Everyone else should be hidden away in defensible locations like the chapel and the barracks, yes. My knowledge of geography isn't great... Iozif, have you heard of the Jorgenfist before?" know:local (to recognize Teraktinus): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
male Human, Slayer 1
Holding the letter in his right hand, the knuckles of his left hand go white as he squeezes the shaft of his polearm. Shaking his head he holds out the letter for the others to see... "You were right to share this with us, though a sending spell would have sufficed... we really need to find someone with some magical ability who has the right temperament to serve there with you... I suppose, though, since you're here you can go scouting for us; grab the fastest mount you can get your hands on and head out- see if you can determine how many there are and when they'll arrive." Turning to his companions he adds, "We need to start planning and preparing if we're going to defend the city. If we can figure our what they're after that will obviously be a big tactical advantage for us too."

Mine is in my profile, but here it is again for ease of access...
appearance and personality: Baldric has a fairly impressive stature, standing over 6 feet tall and bulging slightly with muscle, but he lacks the presence which some smaller men possess. He is rather plain looking with brown eyes, fair skin, black hair and perpetual stubble. He does, however, look like a man who should not be trifled with as he wears his breastplate comfortably and carries a bevy of weaponry.
Baldric tends to be direct, even blunt, in conversation and can at times be gruff, though he often does not mean to be. He is motivated more by coin than any sense of righteousness, but he does feel drawn towards heroics and will often intervene in dangerous situations if he believes he can help in some way (though the potential for reward for these actions doesn't hurt either). |
