Rise of the Runelords recruitment [Play by Post]

Recruitment

Hello, I recently started GM'ing Play by Posts and decided to take on a second game for Rise of the Runelords. I prefer players who have not played the Adventure Path. If you are brand new to Pathfinder or Play by Post, I may not be the best GM for you.

Please submit a character you would like to play. Make sure you read the players guide and get familiar with the setting. Do you have a Roll20 account? Also include in your application any information about you that might help me decide.

Rise of the Runelords Play by Post Build Rules

  • Starting at LVL 1
  • Starting average gold for class and free outfit at or under 10 gp
  • 2 Traits, no drawbacks (1 trait must be a trait from the Rise of the Runelords player's guide)
  • Max starting health for your classes HD
  • All Races 16 or lower RP
  • All classes are allowed except for 3rd party, Mythic, Occult, Summoners or builds focused on summoning.
  • No Evil alignments
  • 20 point buy for stats
  • We are using Unchained Background Skills & Alternate Crafting and Profession Rules
  • We are not using Pathfinder Society Rules, Hero Points, Words of Power, Ultimate Combat Armor/DR, Called Shots, Piecemeal Armor, Wounds or Vigor.
  • We are not using Unchained Gameplay, Stamina and Combat Tricks, Wounds Thresholds, Magic, Consolidated Skills, Grouped Skills, Skill Unlocks, Variant Multicasting, Fractional Base Bonuses or Staggered Advancement
  • No 3rd party material
  • No material may be used from Mystic Adventures or Occult.
  • You may use campaign settings, player companion and similar Paizo content as long as the trait is not part of an adventure path you’re not playing in and of course you must qualify to take said feature.
  • Pounce (Ex) is OP and I have many issues with Paizo’s wording. A cat will only make rake attacks if it grabs, and if it grabs you can not make claw attacks. If you fail to grab you can continue with your claw attacks. In other words, no your cat is not going to get 5 attacks on a charge/pounce. We can discuss but I will not be changing this ruling.

If you have any questions let me know. I will review applications and let you all know when I have made a decision. Good luck and happy gaming!

Super interested! For campaign traits will you be using the Anniversary Edition Player's Guide?

Never having played this AP, I am very interested. When will you be ending the recruitment period?

Interested, moving in the direction of a Half-Orc or Vishkanya Sorcerer, lately Ive found the serpent bloodline interesting.

Dotting to add a dot of interest. (^_^)

Here's a character page for people's perusal.

Sunny

Some background:

'Sunny' (As she prefers to be called by her friends) is a cheery, happy soul. Having grown up about the ports and harbors of she has earned a living, up until now, by working on small fishing boats and trawlers or by providing impromptu entrainment at the small local taverns in the hamlets where the ships would put in for berth.

Now, slightly bored of the sea (And always cleaning the salt from her hair), she has headed inland to see what the world at large holds in store for her.

N'so, a description o' th' kin 'Back home'. Island Elves of which she wus a part of would seem to be more 'Native' like. Simple hunter, gather-ers who might supplement things with a bit of 'natural' crop farming and other horticulture'l endeavors.

Now, bein' Native don't mean bein' Stoopid. Frowns and waggles a warning finger at folks.

Since they're more like Seals then Fish, they'd be on goodly terms wi' th' Merfolks there abouts an' probably have good trade relations wi' 'em. As fer raiders an' such? Well, every community puts up with that sort o' folk in a fantasy setting, right (^_~) ?

Sunny's (Elasandriel) kith and kin have been living on the edges of the sea from time immemorial. Whether it was exploring some new and pristine beach or scampering about the rigging of whatever sailing vessel was the fashion of the day. Being 'Of the sea and shore' are part of her nature.

Quote: "I heard tell of a ship... a ship, t'is said, whut's crewed by tha' dammned an' helmed by a teifling Witch sooo evil... Why Besmara herself be a'feared a takin' her bellow!"

Another idea for class is a 'Spell slinger'.

Much cheers to all.

Dotting. Same as demon lurking, when will recruitment close? What kind of information are you looking for in an application? You mention roll20, what role (no pun intended) will that platform play in your game?

Dotting

I would like to submit Ethan for consideration.

I have used him in a couple other Rise of the Runelords PbPs, but they never got very far (we never made it out of Sandpoint any of the times).

Anyway, I would like to give it another try.

I think he was made with 25 point buy, also has combat stamina and maybe no background skills. I will fix him up tonight and repost, just wanted to show you him first.

fluff:

Urlog was trained for 1 thing and 1 thing really well, to break the lines of humans who stood in his way. He was the bastard son of a lesser Orc Chief who is no more. Urlog was drafted into larger clan even as only a half-human (as the Orc's like to put it) he was still large like his fellow line breakers. Urlog was good at his job, very good, he smashed and crashed using his armor and his speed as his weapons.

One day while preparing for an assault against the humans, Urlog questioned his Band Leader why they must always fight the Humans. Urlog was beaten unconscious for his question, he later woke on the border to Last Wall, he was stripped of all his possession save some under clothes and his families great helm that he wore. He ventured into Last Walls boundaries, knowing that he could be a displaced Half-Orc seeking asylum. He made his way though the county even signing on with a Merc band who was pushing Bandits raiding out of the Forests in the south.

He stayed with Merc band for a few years, venturing to Varisia to see the great cities there. After a while he heard of Giants raiding towns in Varisia, Urlog made his way there to help combat enemies he had grownup around. He lead many sorties against the Giants, slaying many with his Merc band. After a while they continued to head south, his band continued back towards Last Wall but Urlog knew that if he were to pass through Belkzen again with the band he would endanger them more than if they were alone. He decided to stay in Sand Point as they seemed to have a goblin problem and Urlog thought maybe he could bring the goblins to heel and make them productive.

I would like to add Cade Goodbarrel to the list of submissions.

Runelords is a campaign I have always wanted to participate in. I've been to Sandpoint before (Jade Regent), but haven't gotten the chance to play this one. (In fact have only played Regent and run Righteous.)

With regards to character, being as this is about the runelords and given your particular character options, I was thinking of an Android Alchemist who has a curiosity regarding the history of ancient Thassilon.

Alternately, I have also considered a hunter seeing as there are many melee and one witchy submission so far.

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Yes

Demon Lurking wrote:

unknown at this time

Not sure on date. You can give me any information you want. Roll20 is for token/map movement only if necessary. Will rarely be.

I am no prepared to take on an Android. Sorry, I will have to rule that oue out.

Still works fine then. Tiefling is similar mechanically. Looking just for a race with an excuse to want to delve into Ancient Thassilon. Otherwise also fine with a hunter / druid for reasons heretofore mentioned.

Kargas Stormscar, half-orc Bloodrager [Air Elemental Bloodline]

Unsuccessfully applied to RotRL once before, here is my character submission. Only issue is I believe he currently has 3 traits instead of two, so I'm correcting that now.

Dotting here. :)

Scarab Sages

I will be making a Sylph rogue with some eventual wizard levels, that meets your Race point cap i believe Should have something up in a few hours going out to lunch first

I've been thinking to try a Desna worshipping gnome ninja using the new feat Desna's Shooting Star from Divine Anthologies (which will give decent damage, even if it's still a fair amount behind a 2h warrior type character). A follower of Desna seems especially well suited to this game. Between gnome SLAs and various Ki abilities the character will have a number of tricks up their sleeve. Do you think this will fit in?

Gnomes has a number of alternate favored class options that depends on favored terrain. Is there any advice you can offer on that? Any terrain that will be more prevalent than others?

I've actually joined a rise of the runelords game before, but the game ended before the first encounter was over. I hope that's close enough to "haven't played it before" for you?

Too bad a ninja doesn't get trapfinding... It would be much more friendly for the party if I could get that instead of poison use.

Could use some caster submissions.

Hi Deadly Secret! Here's my submission for the game. :) Andulian is a Brawler who will take some Rogue levels down the street (next level already to be clear!). He's a more martial, defensive Rogue, but he should pack enough on the trapfinding and skills monkey departments ;) Thanks for the consideration.

EDIT: Sorry... Not a caster :$

Deadly secret wrote:

My character won't be a caster, but with faerie dragon magic and fey magic alternate racial traits as well as ki, there will be a bag of tricks, at least at low level, to make a good impression of one.

Any chance you could mention what favored terrains could be useful/viable?

I'm also wondering if I can craft before the game starts in order to take advantage of the alternate racial trait master tinker?

I'm throwing together an Elven Dreamspeaker witch. I do want to go more for flavor than anything so I will be doubling down on some creepy witch spells :D

Appearance:
Height: 5 ft. 4 in.
Weight: 119 lbs.
Hair Color: White
Skin Color: Light tan, with blue tattooes
Eye Color: Blue
Kalta is a striking woman in her early twenties. Her tan skin is tattoed, from her brow all the way down to the tops of her toes. Her inviting smile and warm demeanor makes her stand out in any crowd, despite her short stature.

Her gown is a high-quality one, made of fine, imported silk and lined 'arcane' symbols wrought with silver threads. Mostly, she just had the craftsman copy the symbols off of her tattoos. They wouldn't be out of place on an at least minor noblewoman, except for the cut of the dress, which is probably too scandalous for high society. There's plenty of plunging neckline, and otherwise bare skin - she bought that one in particular because it shows off her tattoos, as well as her figure.
She hasn't worn them while travelling, obviously, nor are they clothes suited for archeology or other scholarly work. She's wearing them now to turn heads of festivalgoers passing by. That's how it goes for travelling performers - once you've made people notice you, they'll almost always pay you something.

She's left her bedroll, backpack, sensible travelling clothes and other gear in a hollow tree just outside town, and will collect them again when she leaves, hopefully with enough silver to fund at least a few months of expeditions into the local Thassalonian ruins.

Personality:

She enjoys travelling, and wouldn't settle down for the world, but her lifestyle has left her with little in the ways of deep friendship. She left her best friend and lifetime study partner, Sheven, behind in Korvosa when she left. If someone knew her and wanted to hurt her, they'd probably tell her that she's flighty and shallow. It's not entirely fair, but not entirely false, either. She's left a good number of relationships behind in her travels, romantic and otherwise.
She values the potential rewards of whatever she's doing over the risk she's taking doing it - this reward doesn't have to be monetary, it could be social, or take the form of knowledge acquired, or further understanding of herself. She tries to see a silver lining wherever she is, and rarely fails.

She considers herself a good person, and will go to sometimes surprising lengths to reaffirm that belief, even at cost or danger to herself.

Background:

Kalta was born the daughter of a fairly rich bard who'd settled down in Korvosa. With no particular innate arcane talent, her farther enrolled her into the Academae, paying good coin for them to learn her wizardry. She was never much good at it, but took to studying ancient civilizations with surprising fervor. When she was 18, she was chosen to go along wih a cadre of fellow scholars, to make sense of a newly discovered Thassalonian digsite. It had been cleared out by adventurers first, of course. Regardless, they eventually found and translated a description of a ritual that was supposed to bestow arcane power on the target. Part of it was crumbled and indecipherable, but it was very likely to be the nonessential parts - the remaining text should allow for completion of the ritual. Kalta was the only one to agree to play ginuea pig. They commissioned a local tattoo artist to imprint the depicted symbols on her skin, and completed the accompanying rites themselves. When she awoke the morning after, she could do magic!
That night, one of her fellow scholars, a mage named Therric Ciubotaru, took off with their translation of the ritual, and used magic to grind the stones from which they'd painstakenly reconstructed the text to dust. Presumably, he wanted to be the only one to sell the secret.
They returned home in mixed spirits, she and her colleagues dismayed at the betrayal, but still amazed at what they had accomplished.
For the last few years, she's been travelling on her own, investigating thassalonian ruins where she can find them. In order to fund her expeditions, she has taken a page out of her farther's book, and become a wandering bard.
She is come to Sandpoint for three reasons. She's low on cash, and figures that the high-spirited townsfolk will be willing to dig into their pockets to pay a travelling performer. Further, she's heard that there's a thassalonian landmark in the town, and wants to have a look at it herself. Finally, she's here to have a good time. Festivals are fun, and she hasn't been to a good party in a while.

I can see why, she's a little min/maxed. I would prefer not to accept that build.

I'm listening.... :)

Look, if I can fly around and vomit spiders, why would I not do that?

In all seriousness I see the character as a dreamwalker, someone that hasn't spent much time in society but has developed an interest in Thassilon based on the dreams of scholars that she has visited. That's the very bare bones of the concept.

You should pick a favored terrain that fits your characters placement in the world and things he has done/been. Local terrains would be forest mostly.

All crafting will require the typical rules, including failing and losing material/costs. If you're selected we would do those rolls before game starts.

Can you show me a build?

Would you be opposed to a changeling cleric of desna with the liberation and travel (exploration) domains? I'll do the rest if I get the ok.

Gummy Bear wrote:

Sure, let's see it.

I hope my build is ok? It's very bread and butter, but feel free to let me know in case you'd like me to change anything.

Here is the quick build:

Build:

Varisian Pilgrim of Desna
CG Female Changeling

str 8
dex 10
con 14
int 16
wis 16
cha 14

domains: liberation and travel (exploration)
traits: scholar of the ancients, forbidden knowledge

f 4
r 0
w 5

languages
Common, Varisian, Thassilonian, Giant, Goblin, Draconic

feats
selective channel

skills
Diplomacy 6
Sense Motive 7
Spellcraft 7
Arcana 8
History/Planes 8
Religion 7

The archetype replaces an 8th level domain ability with a harrowing related ability. Is harrowing allowed? I'm not attached to the ability at all, just something I think you should be aware of.

The build would be focused on supporting the party with spells and her domain abilities.

In the next couple of days, I'll write up the fluff. I figured I would get the build approved first.

I'm interested but I'm in one active recruitment right now and don't want to over commit... do you think you'll settle on a date for closing recruitment? Or, should I maybe just try checking back after the other one closes?

Preliminary build here. Background appearance and personality, as well as gear, is pending. Will probably take hexes like Cauldron and make bad guys eat poisoned apples and such. When not putting them into horrifying nightmare sleep, that is

I am going to close this listing for now. I have had an over whelming amount of interest and I have been in contact with a number of you. Once I confirm if all players accept I will check back here for other applicants who applied before this post. Thank you all and happy gaming.

Wow, that really escalated quickly. Lol. Happy gaming to those who got picked.

Sounds good, Deadly. Take your time.

Best of luck to every one. (^_^)
