FYI, I'm away on a camping trip this weekend, 3/3 & 3/4 US/Pacific time. (I know, basically dead, but my luck this would spring back to life while I'm gone :P)

Yeah, so it seems. Or a coma at least. I've heard people can wake up from comas after many years.

Just a heads up, I'm going to be away on a camping trip next weekend. So I'll be away from computers and probably with a bad phone signal all day Feb 10 & 11, US/Pacific time. I will likely be able to catch up late on the 11th.

Argil sees that his companions are ready for action and draws his falchion.

He calls upon Iomedae to gain some of her strength before the battle.

"I declare judgement against these aggressors, who would oppress helpless children. Iomedae, give me resiliency!"

Pronounce judgement, resiliency, swift action.

He nods to Kerda and violently pushes open the door with his shoulder. He rushes directly to the gnome to strike immediately, hoping to catch it off guard.

Not sure how initiative, surprise, etc. will be resolved, so insert this action as appopriate...

lol, okay so the "Roy's" are children, the nearby person behind them is the gnome, and the guard is on the other side of the pool of water.

Argil looks back down the walkway and signals for any others visible to come to him while keeping his eyes focused intently inside.

who else wants in on this? When ready, Argil will pronounce judgement, bust open the door, and attack the gnome.

GM, could I get placement of the enemies in the room we're about to storm into, so I can at least be effective with my brutish ways :D

"Kerda, do you have any stealth moves you want to make here before I break in and apply direct force?"

FYI, I will be away from computers for most of the day Saturday (US/Pacific time). Will be able to catch up late that evening.

"So... we need to post someone above and then swarm both locations on the signal? I think I've seen all I needed to see." Argil is becoming more and more anxious to direct some suffering at the visible oppressors.

"That is... not acceptable."

He scowls at the discovery and follows Kerda back down to the opening.

"Do we think we have room in the carriage to get them to the next town and maybe find an orphanage? Of course, that would be after we deal with whomever is oppressing them here." His eyelids narrow as a purpose of justice creeps into his face.

Argil becomes impatient and steps inside to see what's going on.

Argil growls into the room, slightly irritated. "So what's going on it there? Did you ask the kids to get their parents for us to talk to?"

Argil stands back from the doorway. "My particular brand of beauty is an acquired taste with kids. I'll hang out here."

When the children show their faces momentarily, Argil looks to see if there are any orc or half-orcs among them. Very unlikely.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Hey, I think everyone played to their characters. It's no one's particular fault that it happened like it did.

Besides, the blind man just karate chopped a dog. Easily explained as him still being defensive from living alone. I will write a post in a bit to help make that make sense.

Yup, I think we're all good so far. Argil will always be low on trust at first, and he has a ways to go with this group :)

Argil rolls his eyes a bit and steps closer to the door.

"Alright then, I think that's enough pummeling first, and asking questions later. Let's get to the second part now."

He carefully leans his head into the doorway and scans more carefully for any traps or ambushes.

After, he backs away and turns to his companions.

"I'm pretty sure I heard a voice in there before. Can one of you poke your head in, announce our presence, and explain that we had a misunderstanding with the dog and mean no harm? I think it would be better not coming from the scariest-looking half-orc in the land."

ok, shall we continue? sorry guys im a HORRIBLE GM online. Shotaro knocked out the dog with non lethal. we shall take it up from there.

I don't think so :) This is a small thing, and very recoverable.

If anybody is decent with handle animal, they could take Argil's hint and consider de-escalating? Otherwise the person in the building has a lot of reason to treat our group as hostile.

Seeing the group start to move into action over a dog, Kerda simply watches, raising an eyebrow. "And there goes any attempt at asking for the gold politely. So if we kill them all, does it still count as stealing?"

Following on his brother's hint...

"It counts as an unprovoked attack, and we haven't bothered to see if the break-in was even necessary. Maybe we can still calm all of this down, and if somebody is good with animals perhaps we can spare the dog. Besides, if there's information to be had here, the dead cannot deliver it effectively."

Argil sighs. "I guess we found trouble."

I don't see the dog on the map, but I assume Shotaro is on one side of the open door, and the dog is blocking from the other side?

Argil draws his falchion. move action, done for the surprise round

"I get the feeling not everybody here is going to agree on what the right thing to do is, if we do find something here. I hope we can generally agree that it would be wise to stick to information gathering. If this queen is willing to expend us, then she'd have no qualms about letting bounty hunters know we made of with her gold."

"Ah.." Argil replies, curiously. "I guess I must have dozed off on the trip and missed some conversation."

Argil hops out of the carriage and stretches. He’s equally offended by the pervasive odor but doesn’t make a scene of it. When he gets a minute he pulls his brother aside for a very brief chat.

He starts towards the fishery. ”So, driver, does anyone usually tend to these safe houses or are we truly on our own?””

Argil scans for traps as he surveys the fishery.

I don't roll dice against PCs as a rule, so you guys know. Too much conflict caused that way in my time.

Oh, did I faux pas? I expect the characters to eventually gel and *somehow* get along, even if dysfunctionally, but I figured I've got to play Argil's high-bar-for-trust. It looked like Kerda was on my wavelength for the RP :)

Hmm... she's leaving something out. I need to watch these characters a little longer. I need to know that none of them have been planted here by the queen. I hope Clydwell can play his cards close to his chest until I can make such a determination...

Argil then notices Kerda, and that she hasn't directly addressed the situation. "And what of you? What do you make of this little errand?"

He peers directly at her with his hood still up over his head, but allowing a hint of the face that hides in its shadow.

Fame? That can't be good.

With an uncertain glance at his brother, Clydwell moves over to him and begins to head with him toward the door. His face looks solemn, concerned. Nervous? Apologetic? Definitely some combination of some or all of those things.

Argil returns an incredulous head shake and shrug back to his brother. It’s not common, but he has no answers for him and doesn’t really know what they’ve gotten themselves into.

Argil tries to read the queen before they are ushered out.

@Shotaro Clydwell has a deep, rumbling voice that is gentler than it seems like it should be. Sometimes it seems uncertain. And he very likely smells like soap and steel.

@Shotaro Argil’s is similar but with an abrasive, slightly gravelly bite.

Couple guards are by a very run down looking horse drawn carriage loading supply's on the roof. They whistle when the group is spotted and guided to the carriage. You each are handed a map of the route as well as explained the supply's given. (2 horses, a crate of rations (roughly 3 weeks worth), shovel, 10 torches, a fishing kit, 2 hemp ropes and 3 weeks worth of horse feed). Looking at the map, several X's marked at random areas along the route. if asked about, they are explained as "safe houses" to rest if needed.

After they pile into the carriage the questions begin to flood Argil. He looks around him at the quality of the carriage ”This doesn’t exactly seem like a properly vetted and funded operation. Does anybody buy this story of hers? Or are we just expendables in a cover op for some political move.”

Feel free to transplant us to the throne room if you don't want to mess around with us in the temple. lol

We'll get there eventually either way :P

After an unsuccessful info gathering attempt, Argil finds his brother again. "All they told me was what we already knew, that royal guards did in fact deliver this summons. I'm really curious who knows us by name around these parts." He ponders thoughtfully for a brief moment, but still can't think of any reasonable links. "This is really going to nag at me. Well, let's head over to the castle."

After showing their note to the guards at the gate, and somehow keeping Argil's face hidden, the brothers are led into the waiting room. He peers out of the darkness of his cloak at the other occupants of the room, scanning them carefully. He decides to wait and hear what this is all about before broaching the subject of his hideous disfigurement.

The big half-orc pair had never seen such a big place as Korvosa. While one of the half-orc wears a permanent scowl, the other seems to gawk, almost like a child. Like a big, imposing child. While most visitors had to contend with jostling through the crowds to get from one place to another, Argil almost exudes an aura of menace and the crowd gives him a wide berth. Clydwell bears a stark contrast to his brother with the wondrous expression on his face.

Before long, the pair find themselves at the Pantheon of Many, before the Shrine to Iomedae where Clydwell sits solemnly in prayer. When a page approaches with a smudged letter and interrupts his prayer, Clydwell is not annoyed, only curious.

The rumbling voice of the big half-orc is at odds with his gentle tone. "Honored priests? How?..." Clydwell gives his brother a bewildered look. "We're invited to meet the king?"

What does Clydwell know about the king?

Argil grunts and swipes the note out of his brother's (now loose) grip. Indeed, it appears that although the brothers have been deliberately avoiding the attention of church leadership, somebody figured out that they were here and passed their names on to even be considered in this request.

Utter, bewildered confusion gives way to suspicion. "Clydwell, this seems almost comedically out-of-the-blue. It could be a trap set by those adoring fans from our hometown." The phrase drips with almost-physical sarcasm as he speaks it. "I'm going to ask a few folk around the temple whether they saw anyone make such a request recently."

Argil adopts a somewhat more peaceable, solemn demeanor, pulls his cloak hood over his head and keeps his face pointed at the ground as he approaches two or three other official-looking, possible clerics in the temple to try to gather the vital information.

Diplomacy to gather info: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

To each in turn: "Good brother, have there been any recent requests by nobility or royalty for members of our faith to aid in a task? Does this temple keep tabs on clerics and inquisitors that pass through?"

I feel like our duo might not have a great motivation to join the Pathfinders, but I guess if they advertised vanquishing evil, that could work.

Or if there was some tie-in to our backstory.

Money is a pretty good motivator. Hard to fight evil on an empty stomach, after-all.

Money would work for a time, but they'd need a motivation to stick with this particular source of money.

- they've somehow recently incurred a debt fighting teh evils (paying the ransom of some innocent? would make an interesting follow-up sidequest to exact vengeance on the villian, now that they have help, and easily repay it)
- the jobs the Society offers aligns with fighting enemies of Iomedae (reclaiming defiled temples, etc.), or evildoers in general (basically what Clydwell said)
