After reading the recommendations of the judges, the Paizo messageboard community decided by vote which entrants would advance to the next round. It was a close race with the 17th finalist missing the top 16 by just a handful of votes. "The judges were very impressed with this round's submissions," said Erik Mona, Paizo's Publisher and one of three RPG Superstar judges. "The 16 advancing entries really pulled away from the pack, and several of the submitted countries would make great touchstones for sourcebooks of their own. We're looking for only one RPG Superstar, but it's clear we've got several real contenders for that top spot. Speaking for all the judges, we can't wait to see what villains the Top 16 come up with in the next round! Voters are really going to agonize over selecting the best of what will no doubt be an outstanding array of submissions." For the initial open call, entrants were asked to submit a wondrous item using the 3.5 SRD. Each entry needed to be 200 words or less and had to include proper mechanics and flavor. Entries were eliminated for ignoring the entry requirements, for spelling errors, for using non-Paizo intellectual property, or for simply not being creative enough to fit the mold of an RPG Superstar. Round two asked the top 32 finalists to write a 1,000 word description of a fantasy nation describing that nation's people, history, geography, government and hidden secrets. No entries were eliminated this round on technicalities, though the judges often derided an entry for being too stereotypical or too mundane. The winners of Round Two for RPG Superstar are:
The RPG Superstar Top 16 will now be required to design an evocative villain with full stat block to the specifications of the RPG Superstar judges and submit that villain by Monday, December 17 at 12:00 P.M. (noon) Pacific Time. These round three submissions will be revealed to the general public on December 19 with the judges' comments and the public will then get to discuss the entries and vote for their favorites. Voting ends December 25 and the Top 8 by votes will move on to round four. For a complete schedule of RPG Superstar, including rules and a FAQ, visit paizo.com/rpgsuperstar. RPG Superstar™ Top 32 Announced32 finalists selected out of more than 850 entries!Paizo Publishing, LLC® today announced the finalists for RPG Superstar. Judges Erik Mona, Wolfgang Baur, and Clark Peterson worked feverishly over the past few weeks to narrow the field of 856 entries down to the best 32. "I'm amazed by the excellent design work not just by the finalists, but by just about everyone who submitted," said Erik Mona, Paizo's Publisher and one of three RPG Superstar judges. "When this started, we were a bit worried that we weren't going to be able to come up with 32 great items. Instead, we ended up with more than 70 that could have made the finals. The Top 32 are the cream of an incredibly bounteous crop." For the initial open call, entrants were asked to submit a wondrous item using the 3.5 SRD. Each entry needed to be 200 words or less and had to include proper mechanics and flavor. Entries were eliminated for ignoring the entry requirements, for spelling errors, for using non-Paizo intellectual property, or for simply not being creative enough to fit the mold of an RPG Superstar. The Top 32 finalists for RPG Superstar are:
These 32 finalists will now be required to design a country to the specifications of the RPG Superstar judges and submit that country by Monday, December 3 at 12:00 P.M. (noon) Pacific Time. Introducing Pathfinder Chronicles™—Paizo's New Campaign SettingCurse of the Crimson Throne to be the title of the second Pathfinder Adventure Path™.Paizo Publishing announced today that the title of its new campaign setting is Pathfinder Chronicles. Paizo also confirmed that the GameMastery™ Modules line of fantasy adventures and the Pathfinder™ Adventure Path books would be set in the Pathfinder Chronicles setting. All books released in that setting are published under the Open Gaming License and are compatible with the world's most popular fantasy roleplaying game. In the world of the Pathfinder Chronicles, the triumphs of heroes and the workings of villains are recorded in a constantly evolving codex of tales spanning centuries. For much of written history, world events followed charted routes. Oracles and seers mapped out the future in the stars above, and their prophecies always gave a reliable view of the ages to come. Until a god died a century ago. No one saw that coming, and now, the old prophecies are failing. Oracles go mad and seers desperately try to account for the loss of the future. While some cry out that the world is at an end, they've been doing so for 100 years now. And the world's still here. It's just unclear where things are going. The future of Golarion, the world of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, is open and ready to receive the triumphs and failures of a new generation of heroes. "Pathfinder's Adventure Paths as well as the GameMastery Modules are set in the world of Golarion, yet they also mesh perfectly with the core game experience," said James Jacobs, author of Pathfinder #1: "Burnt Offerings" and the Editor-in-Chief of Pathfinder. "Most groups already have a favorite campaign world, and by building our adventures on classic themes, it should be a simple matter to adapt any Pathfinder Adventure Path or GameMastery Module to a campaign setting of your choice." Paizo Publishing also announced today that the title of the second Pathfinder Adventure Path will be Curse of the Crimson Throne. The first installment of Curse of the Crimson Throne will appear this February in Pathfinder #7 and will run through Pathfinder #12 in July 2008. Pathfinder #7 kicks off the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path this February with an adventure titled "Edge of Anarchy" by Nicolas Logue (author of Pathfinder #3: "The Hook Mountain Massacre" and GameMastery Module D1: Crown of the Kobold King). The King has died, and the city of Korvosa is in chaos: riots, banditry, monsters, and mayhem are turning the normally safe streets of the city into a war zone. Desperate to regain control, Queen Ileosa seeks heroes to aid her before the largest city in all Varisia consumes itself from within. This volume of Pathfinder includes a gazetteer of the city of Korvosa, designed to supplement the player-oriented Pathfinder Chronicles Guide to Korvosa, along with a presentation on the mystical culture of the land's indigenous Varisians and several new monsters designed for use in urban environs. In March, Pathfinder #8 continues Curse of the Crimson Throne with "Seven Days to the Grave," an adventure written by F. Wesley Schneider (author of the Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide). The civil unrest in Korvosa has been dealt with, only to be replaced by a far more deadly and insidious threat: horrific disease that leaves its dead deformed and faceless sweeps through the streets of Korvosa, death borne on the wind and steeped in the stones. Mass graves crowd the outer walls and plague doctors stalk the streets in a desperate attempt to prevent the sickness from spreading, yet is there something more to the plague than meets the eye? This volume of Pathfinder contains supplementary rules for handling large-scale urban disasters such as plagues and famines, and also presents a detailed exploration of Abadar, the god of cities and wealth. Several new monsters associated with sickness and disease round out the bestiary. Pathfinder #9 approaches the halfway mark of Curse of the Crimson Throne in April with a Richard Pett (author of Pathfinder #2: "The Skinsaw Murders") adventure titled "Escape from Old Korvosa." Old Korvosa is under quarantine, a sprawling slum contained by roadblocks and guard posts manned by remorseless Hellknights and sinister plague doctors. While the rest of Korvosa stifles under an increasingly brutal martial law, the quarantined streets of Old Korvosa descend into true bedlam. Yet the one man who may hold the truth behind the perils that have brought Korvosa to its knees is lost inside the quarantine zone. Can he be rescued from the clutches of a new menace rising in the festering pits of Old Korvosa, and what secrets does he know that could justify the bounties for his death? This volume of Pathfinder presents an in-depth exploration of the rakshasas of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting and reveals details on Golarion's most sinister network of assassins, the Red Mantis. Introducing Pathfinder: Paizo's Adventure Path MonthlyRise of the Runelords Adventure Path to debut this August.Paizo Publishing announced today the creation of Pathfinder, a 96-page, perfect-bound, full-color softcover Adventure Path book printed on high-quality paper that releases in a monthly volume. Each volume contains an in-depth Adventure Path scenario, stats for about a half-dozen new monsters, and several support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Because Pathfinder uses the Open Game License, it is 100% compatible with the world's most popular fantasy roleplaying game. Paizo plans to release Adventure Paths in six-volume arcs, meaning each year of Pathfinder will include two complete Adventure Paths. The first Pathfinder Adventure Path, Rise of the Runelords, will comprise the first six volumes of Pathfinder. A new Adventure Path will begin in Pathfinder #7. "This August marks the beginning of a new era in fantasy roleplaying," says Erik Mona, Paizo’s Publisher. "With the experience of three popular Adventure Paths behind us, our peerless editorial and art staffs understand exactly what gamers need to run a challenging, exciting campaign experience. Pathfinder significantly improves upon our past efforts and sets a new standard for the tabletop RPG industry." Pathfinder #1 launches this August with Paizo's newest Adventure Path, Rise of the Runelords. Runelords is a complete campaign that takes player characters from 1st level to 15th level and possibly beyond. It takes place in the frontier kingdom of Varisia, a realm of rugged steppes, haunted forests, and trackless mountains partially civilized to the south, but wholly wild and the domain of giants and monsters to the north. An ancient warlord from a forgotten age has awakened from a deathless sleep, and draws his cruel giant minions near as he prepares to rebuild his decadent empire. The PCs must uncover this sinister plot and prevent a terrible giant war from bringing ruin to their homeland, but in doing so, they run the risk of falling to the sins that brought the ancient empire of the Runelords to ruin. Rise of the Runelords features the diabolical creations of James Jacobs, Richard Pett, Nicolas Logue, Wolfgang Baur, Stephen S. Greer, and Greg A. Vaughan and features covers by superstar artist Wayne Reynolds. "With the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, I wanted to present a campaign that was strongly rooted in the classic RPG tradition, and one that focused on some of every GM's favorite menaces," says James Jacobs, Paizo's creative director for Pathfinder. "Rise of the Runelords follows an amazing progression that starts small with goblins and scales up in a hurry. By the end, the foes are immense and unforgettable. It's thrilling to call upon authors like Rich, Nick, Wolf, Steve, and Greg and on artists like Rob Lazzaretti and Wayne Reynolds—with their help, this will be the best Adventure Path yet!" Every volume of Pathfinder will feature at least two support articles designed to bolster that volume's adventure, but the contents of these support articles can just as well serve any campaign. These support articles might be in-depth explorations of key cities, descriptions of important deities and their worshipers, ecological discussions of key monsters, explorations of the region in which the Adventure Path takes place, details on new magic items and spells, or even rules for how to handle certain types of in-game situations (such as how to maintain a stronghold). Each volume also contains an installment of the Pathfinder's Journal, an ongoing exploration of the world in which these Adventure Paths are set. These journals give you a wealth of inspiring background material you can take and use in your own campaign or to expand on the current Adventure Path. Finally, each Pathfinder will feature a bestiary of a half-dozen or so new monsters. Some of these new monsters will feature in the adventure in that volume, while others might just fit the themes of the adventure—they're provided for the Game Master to expand their game. Many of these monsters will be drawn from real-world myth, legend, and even cryptozoological sources, further adding a sense of tradition and verisimilitude. Pathfinder Adventure Paths will take place in a new Paizo campaign setting that is currently in development. This setting will involve elements of classic sword and sorcery themes sure to appeal to longtime and brand-new gamers alike. Stay tuned to paizo.com to learn more about this exciting new campaign setting as it develops. Pathfinder retails for $19.99 per volume and will be available at local game stores, bookstores, and online at paizo.com. Readers may also subscribe online at paizo.com on a month-to-month basis. New Pathfinder subscriptions are billed at a rate of 30% off the cover price per issue, plus shipping. A valid credit card is needed to subscribe to Pathfinder. Subscribers can cancel at any time. Subscribers will receive each monthly volume direct from Paizo, at a shipping rate of their choice, and need never worry about missing a volume. Subscribers will also receive a free PDF of each volume of Pathfinder (a $13.99 value!). Visit paizo.com/transition for additional details. Introducing Planet Stories: Classic Science Fantasy NovelsNew Paizo Novel Line to Feature Moorcock, Howard, GygaxPaizo Publishing®, LLC announced the creation of a new line of classic science fantasy novel reprints called Planet Stories. With large printing houses distancing themselves from backlisted novels, Planet Stories brings back some of the long forgotten classic inspirations for much of today's science fiction and fantasy genres. Planet Stories will be available at your local book or hobby store and will retail for around $12.99 each. This August, Planet Stories launches with two venerable titles from classic veterans of the science fiction and fantasy genres: Almuric, by Robert E. Howard, is a savage planet of crumbling stone ruins and debased, near-human inhabitants. Into this world comes Esau Cairn, Earthman, swordsman, murderer. Only he can overthrow the terrible devils that enslave Almuric, but to do so he must first defeat the inner demons that forced him to abandon Earth. Filled with vile beasts and thrilling adventure in the tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Almuric is one of Howard's few novels, and an excellent yarn from one of America's most distinct literary voices. Robert E. Howard is most known for creating the fictional character, Conan the Cimmerian (a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian), who has been featured in comic books, short stories, novels, and feature films for over 70 years. Howard's work is often credited as the source of the sword-and-sorcery genre and influenced everyone from J.R.R. Tolkien to George R.R. Martin. The Anubis Murders, by Gary Gygax, weaves a fantastic tale of warring wizards that spans the world from the pyramids of ancient Egypt to the mist-shrouded towns of medieval England. Someone is murdering the world's most powerful sorcerers, and the trail of blood leads straight to Anubis, the solemn god known by most as the Master of Jackals. Can Magister Setne Inhetep, personal philosopher-wizard to the Pharaoh, reach the distant kingdom of Avillonia and put an end to the Anubis Murders, or will he be claimed as the latest victim? Gary Gygax co-created the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game over 30 years ago and has watched it grow to become one of the largest entertainment sources in the hobby gaming industry. Dungeons & Dragons has been played by tens of millions worldwide and the name Gygax is instantly recognizable to any fans of the game, past or present. Planet Stories will release one classic science fantasy novel each month beginning this September. Additional planned releases include: City of the Beast/Warriors of Mars, by Michael Moorcock, features the return of Moorcock's Eternal Champion, Kane of Old Mars, a brilliant American physicist whose strange experiments in matter transmission catapult him across space and time to the Red Planet. Kane's is a Mars of the distant past, a place of romantic civilizations, fabulous many-spired cities, and the gorgeous princess Shizala. To win her hand and bring peace to Mars, Kane must defeat the terrible Blue Giants of the Argzoon, whose ravaging hordes threaten the whole planet! Adventure in the Edgar Rice Burroughs tradition from the creator of Elric of Melniboné. The first stand-alone American printing since 1979, City of the Beast/Warrior of Mars will be available this September. Black God's Kiss, by C.L. Moore, was first published in the pages of Weird Tales in 1934. C.L. Moore's Jirel of Joiry is the first significant female sword-and-sorcery protagonist and one of the most exciting and evocative characters the genre has ever known. Published alongside seminal works by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, the five classic fantasy tales included in this volume easily stand the test of time and often overshadow the storytelling power and emotional impact of stories by Moore's more famous contemporaries. A seminal work from one of fantasy's most important authors, Black God's Kiss is an essential addition to any fantasy library and will be available this October. Paizo Publishing®, LLC to Suspend Shipping of GameMastery Campaign WorkbookManufacturing Error Resulted in Binding IssueCONSUMER ALERT: Paizo Publishing®, LLC is aware of the recent complaints regarding the GameMastery™ Campaign Workbook (PZO3000) binding issues. At this time, we've suspended shipping of Campaign Workbooks both into distribution and online at paizo.com and are working with the printer to uncover what went wrong in the manufacturing process. Paizo takes great care to release only the best products into the marketplace and we deeply regret that one of our products was not of the highest quality. Once we've finished our discussion with the manufacturer and have a timeline in place, we will begin accepting returns of sold copies. Anyone who purchased a copy at their local book or hobby store or at our website will be able to return their copy online via a web tool on paizo.com. Retail stores can continue to work through their distributor to get replacement copies. We will inform the public the moment we begin accepting returns. As this hinges on a new batch of books being printed, we want everyone to be aware that we anticipate anywhere up to eight weeks before customers start to see replacement copies in their mailboxes. We apologize for this delay and any inconvenience this issue has caused. As a small token of our gratitude for your continued loyalty and patience, we will ship every replacement copy of Campaign Workbook with a free booster pack of GameMastery Item Pack: Hero's Hoard and Item Pack: Relics of War. Please keep your eyes on the paizo.com messageboards for further updates. ABOUT PAIZO PUBLISHING Paizo's GameMastery accessories give you the tools to make the most of your RPG campaigns.
