A Lovely Little Riot - Round 1 - concluded

24 Red Thug (4hp dmg)
23 Celas
20 Blue Thug
17 Bellara
17 Buttercup (hiding?)
15 Impasha (11/20hp remain, +1 to AC 1 round)
15 Elarion
13 Orange Thug
8 Myron
7 Purple Thug

Joining the fight, Myron casts a spell that creates dragon claws which rip into Green, killing him. They also wound Red more, and while not down, he looks in bad shape.

Moving to the melee, Purple Thug attacks the nearest hero, which is Elarion. Taking two solid blows, Elarion crumples to the ground, unconscious.

Elarion takes 14hp from the two strikes, and is at zero, which means he gains the dying 1 condition and moves to just before Purple in the count. On to Round 2

Hurt pretty badly, Red Thug tries to get out from the surrounded position after making a quick strike against Bellara. She moves closer to her other Chelish allies, taking a breather as best she can.

Celas is up now for the good guys. No one likes it when the cleric goes down...

As his target slips away, Celas sees the fight shift as Elarion falls. Celas thinks, Elarion's down, damn, one of the few people I like and a healer. What have I gotten myself into? Desperately, he shouts, "The elf's hurt, is there a healer around?" He spots Impasha surrounded and seems to remember people saying they'd been healed by her. Seeing that he can't get to her in time to help he says, "Mistress, protect your loyal servant, I'll get that little bastard."

Celas closes in on the thug in red, seeming to strike toward his eyes, but then bends his left knee and makes a sudden swipe to the thigh hoping to puncture an artery.

Buttercup does NOT like the way the one with the orange scarf looked at her. It occurs to her that the spot in the tree might be a nice temporary solution but if this battle goes poorly it might end up being a nasty trap. Eyes narrowed she gathers some power and a dust cloud rises from the ground and surrounds her, then she releases a blast at orange. Perhaps not the most tactical choice, but she really, really did not like the way orange looked at her. And, besides, an orange scarf with a green shirt? Gods, the man has no fashion sense!

** 2 action elemental blast
* 1 action elemental blast

The channel elements ability allows me to use a one action elemental blast. I also read that you can not use any impulse, including the blast, unless the channel elements is active. Does that mean you cannot use the two action blast first? If so, reverse the order of these attacks. Not that it matters because that dang tree branch keeps wobbling under her and messing up her aim.

Blue is next but unlikely to affect Bellara so here is her action.

Feeling like she was off a solid start, she breathes a sigh of relief.
See? All that practice is worth the effort!

Celas's words snap her back to reality though. She notices the absence of Elarion's presence behind her and as she spins to see him on the ground, it nearly takes her breath away.

Spinning on her heels, she narrows her eyes at pink-banded foe and with a confident flourish, steps in and thrusts her rapier into his chest with as much force as she can muster, snapping her buckler in place after her strike. Expending panache for finisher here.

Celas sees Elarion go down and realizes his best help is to drop some of these rioters quickly. He slinks over to where Red has retreated and uses the crowd to his advantage to strike the opponent when she is not prepared. The resulting strike drops Red, evening the odds somewhat.

Blue hears his compatriot hit the ground, and turns to face the new attacker trying to bash Celas' brains in. But the rogue is able to ward off any hits by dodging easily.

I will post Buttercup and Bellara's actions next update, Impasha is up now.

This cry from Hank draws Impasha's attention the way a hound is charged by a hunting horn. She looks quickly to where the red-cloaked woman fights off another thug, and though she cannot see the downed elf behind the fountain, her eyes widen and her posture seems to straighten with new resolve.

"I'm coming!" she says sharply.

Bellara spins around to attack Purple Thug, striking them with a finishing blow that kills the thug in one stroke. She then points at Blue, but the target of her intimidation doesn't seem to afraid given the distance.

From her tree perch, Buttercup activates her elemental aura, bringing chunks of earth at Orange. Then she uses the impulse of her ability to double down on the attack, but both blasts seems to miss. Buttercup blames the unsteady platform of the tree branch for the errant shots.

As Elarion falls and Hank calls out, Impasha knows she has to get to his side. She lashes out with her blade twice, dealing enough damage to fell Yellow.

Orange Thug pursues Impasha through the crowd, making one attack. The strike crushes the champion, who join Elarion crumpled on the ground, slowly dying.

Impasha is also Dying 1, and is already right before Orange in the order. Myron is up. Elarion needs a DC11 flat check to stabilize or go to Dying 2

Holding her shield to ward off any blow from the villain now assailing Hank, Impasha looks to the young delivery man and is about to confirm the location of the stricken healer.

Her mouth opens but her voice never sounds as a new mace whistles through the air and cracks directly onto her unguarded head. Impasha never experiences a moment of pain. For a split-second she is aware of a flash of light and ringing sensation in her teeth, followed by darkness.

The champion drops heavily to the cobblestones, nose-first, dark-red blood oozing up through her straw-colored hair and running past her neck and ears to pool in the gaps of the paving stones.

The blade hits the tall woman who leads the dottari in the neck, and she starts to bleed out massively. Clutching her throat the woman cries out, "Kill them all!" to her guardsmen, and then staggers back inside the Opera House, mortally wounded.

That tears it we have to run. the dottari is busy killing everyone but they'll get to us soon, and Buttercup is too close. But I need to get rid of this lout first. Celas feints through the crowd, but he gets a hard elbow at just the wrong moment and nearly drops his blade instead of sticking it in the back of the sole remaining armed rioter.

The crowd still parts easily for Bellara, and she dances up the foremost dottari, scoring a hit before the soldier can get his shield up to block. She then snaps her own shield into place, ready for any counter-strokes.

Buttercup, hanging out in the tree still, tries to use her elemental power to pummel the rioters with earth. Finally with her last try, she succeeds in bludgeoning the Orange guy, but its not quite enough to fell him at this point.

Green Dottari, wounded by Bellara's impetuous attack, turns on her with a snarl. Where the rioters had sticks or cudgels, this soldier has a real heavy mace, and he swings it with some skill, following up with an uppercut motion of his steel shield. The mace does land despite the noble woman's small buckler but the shield uppercut misses. The guard does raise his shield this time, expecting more fight.

Impasha, still lying prone, and near death, has enough constitution to hold it together and stabilizes, out of immediate mortal danger.

Now aware of Buttercup blasting him from the tree, Orange Thug leaves off melee with Celas, and moves through the crowd toward the tree, determined to bring down the halfling, which is really no better than a slave in their eyes. He gest to the base of the tree, but cannot get purchase enough to leverage up.

Seeing more-heavily armed opponents coming out of the opera house, and seeing the unattended and unconscious elf lying next to the fountain, Myron works his way through the crowd to try and pick him up and get him out of here.

One movement will get me right next to Elarion. Do I need to use a second action to get in the same square to try and pick him up? Let me know what I need to do to try to pick him up, pleae.

You can pick up from an adjacent square. To carry, you need to add the weight of the bulk of the PC plus the bulk of their equipment. Medium creatures are Bulk 6, but since Elarion is an elf, I will call him Bulk 5. His gear is Bulk 3, and you are carrying Bulk 1 without him. So that's Bulk 9 to carry. This makes you encumbered. As such you gain the clumsy 1 condition and take -10ft movement penalty to all speeds. That penalty applies before the calculation for the difficult terrain due to the crowds. That makes your speed 15' and then halved its 1.5 squares per stride action.

And its an Interact action to pick him up. I will waive any STR or Athletics check for now

Celas takes a swift look around and realizes that the fight is going against everyone fighting in the area. We can't win one on one. For a second he considers fleeing but with the crowd and numbers that seems difficult as well. With Buttercup still up a tree, Celas opts for a fighting retreat, moving towards his friend. As he does that, he notes Bellara's suicidal charge against a dottari. May Lady Luck and the Drunken God bless you and may your death be epic. From her perch in the tree, Buttercup is able to pummel the thug trying to attack her at point-blank range with her elemental blast. The effect is rather immediate, as the Chelish supporter is blasted backwards prone and unmoving. She nods at Celas as she conjures stones from the air, ready to move across them if needed.

Stepping Stones does not have a Move trait, so its merely conjuring the stones for the path. You still have to Stride to walk on them, and Buttercup is out of actions this turn after the attack and the casting.

With her battle-lust up, Bellara continues the fight with the dottari, after trading blows last round. This time her rapier strike is turned aside by the raised shield of the Green guard and her second strike misses. She also raises her shield to ward the return stroke.

Green Dottari continues his struggle with the fencer, trying to bash her again with his heavy mace. But his strikes also fail. He again raises his shield to block whatever comes next.

Impasha still lies there, but as the crowd mills around and bumps and trammels her, she actually starts to stir, perhaps about to awaken?

I will let Impasha regain consciousness at 1 hp next turn, and Elarion will also next round. Myron, carrying Elarion, is up now. He can move 1.5 squares per round with the load, or 4 squares if using all actions.

Glancing over his shoulder, Myron thinks he can see one of the dottari coming after him through the crowd. He makes a show of casting a spell into the fountain next to him, he takes another look back at the soldier coming his way, and then he continues to carry Elarion away.

Immediately after, the water in the fountain starts to churn with movement, the occasional lashing tentacle reaching nearly five feet into the air.

Casting figment to make it appear as if Myron summoned something gross and grasping into the fountain. It may buy some time as it causes the dottari to give the fountain a wide berth as he fights his way through the crowd, or it may even have him turn away.

8 Red Dottari
15 Elarion (wounded 1, stable, prone)
4 Yellow Dottari

Myron sees his faster pursuer closing on him, and decides to try to intervene. Taking the time to cast a minor illusory spell, he hopes that it will slow or stop the dottari. As the guard gets near, a thick green tentacle bursts from the fountain swirling the water. The dottari stops and stares, mouth agape. Myron is able to get just a little farther away with Elarion over his shoulder.

Red Dottari stops and raises his shield as the figment frightens him. He briefly loses sight of Myron, but after a few seconds, notes the illusory nature of the figment, and scans the crowd looking for his quarry. Even with the distractions of the crowd, he does spy the slinking sorceror but doesn't close any distance this turn.

Elarion stirs on the shoulder of Myron, apparently about to regain his consciousness.

Yellow Dottari sees Impasha lying prone and unmoving, stirs her a little with his boot, and moves on, trying to get to where Celas and Buttercup are standing through the milling crowd. He is able to close the distance, but not make any assault.

As the dottari close in, the crowd is slowly dispersing but still in a mild panic and causing havoc with movement.

Still difficult terrain but thinning. Only the paved areas are difficult, the grassy area and off the map are normal movement. Celas, Bellara, and Buttercup are up now.

Celas sigh of relief as Buttercup starts her retreat is cut off by the arrival of a dottari. Knowing that he is outmatched by a professional soldier, Celas weighs options. Fighting Street thugs I've done often, fighting guards is insane but do I have a choice? Bellara is still duking it out with that dottari, with that one with the fancy red hat behind her. That one guy, - seems vaguely familiar - is hauling Elarion away slowly, Buttercups running. I have to run too but maybe this guy will chase me for a while. Hoping Buttercup can find a way on his own, Celas opts for a risky ploy. With a sudden grab of a stout branch of the tree, Celas using it to aid his quick tumble as he rolls past the dottari, and swiftly moves through the thinning crowd but not yet trying to blend in.

As he runs he tosses an mild insult, saying "Bye, freebooter.", emphasizing the mercenary's having little respect.

Celas's grip slips from the branch, causing him to slam into the dottari he grabs the shield or armor (whichever the guard has) and heaves himself over and runs. Or ends up nose to nose with a very angry dottari.

For a heartbeat, Bellara risked a glance over her shoulder. She saw Myron staggering under Elarion’s weight, Buttercup darting from her stones, Celas tumbling recklessly past a soldier, and Impasha barely stirring. The protest was breaking. The crowd would scatter, and when they did, the dottari would carve them down in the open streets.

Not yet. Not while I can still hold them here. A little longer...

Letting gravity take you down is a free action. Damage is depending on the height fallen. You take a branch 5' up and be fine. Grabbing an edge in a tree is probably like a DC10 or so. Pretty easy to do.

A Lovely Little Riot - Round 5 - continued

23 Celas

Buttercup dashes across the stone she kept floating in the last turn, and finds her self in the tree farther away from the dottari guard. She does take some effort to sustain the spell but the floating stones disappear as soon as she passes them.
To move cross the stones this round, you need to Sustain the Spell using a second action. Buttercup has one left.

Celas' attempt to slip around the guard fails, and he ends up face to face with the guardsman.
since the attempt fails, you can still move away, or do something more with 2 actions remaining

Bellara's duel with the green dottari continues. He is not impressed with her performance steps, but does take a hit from her blade, but not enough to down him.

Green dottari counter attacks after stepping to Bellara's left for a moment. then raises his own shield. The forceful blow lands, caroming off the the lady's buckler, and into her shoulder with significant force.

Bellara trades blows and is now at 5hp remaining, Impasha who is conscious with 1hp remaining, is up now along with Myron, who is still carrying Elarion. Still need actions from Celas and Buttercup if they wish as well.

Somewhere in the fog of darkness, Impasha is aware of a sharp pinch to her fingers.

Someone is stepping on my hand. Is someone standing in my bed?

Then with a cough and a labored snuffle of blood, she is aware that she can hardly breathe and that her nose really hurts. She turns her head to the side and tries to open her eyes, but the bright light of day blasts her vision, and she becomes aware of a savage pulsing headache. What at first seems like a ringing sound resolves itself into a babble of voices.

The protest...I'm at the protest... the riot.

She attempts to push herself off the ground but her right shoulder can't bear the weight, and her head howls at her for the effort. Pebbles press into her cheek. Rolling onto her side, she brings a hand to her holy symbol and calls upon her deity for aid.

"Inheritor, hear me...the work of your servant is not finished. Fortify me so I may fight on." she says barely aloud in a voice cracking and dry from the clotted blood in the back of her throat.

Healing magic washes through her, deadening the pain and clearing her vision enough to open her eyes. People were shouting, running, pushing. Her sword was about a foot away.

I was knocked unconscious. Someone hit me in the head.

She pushes herself up to her knees, then grabs her sword and stands up the rest of the way. The world was spinning slightly, clockwise, and the ringing in her ears was insistent, but not absolute. The colors all seemed strangely vivid and oppressive, like the world in a painting. She looks around, feeling strangely detached from the raging action, as if this were actually a dream.

She can see dottati moving through the crowd, attacking people with lethal force. Past the fountain behind her (was there some kind of creature in the fountain?), she can see a man being carried over the shoulder of another. She thinks she can see Hank running away into the crowd to her left, but the little halfling girl seemed to be gone, or perhaps she too was lost in the crowd. Ahead of her, near the door of the opera house, the woman in the red cloak was dueling with one of the dottari.

She wobbles sideways and squints through her headache, but her grip tightens on her sword. She needed to run away--she could feel liquid eddying gently through her hair, probably blood. But for the moment she hesitates, struggling with a compulsion to duty, a sense that she needed to do more...

In that case, after making her way across the stepping stones she lets herself drop, trusting her instincts and training to slow the fall and land on her feet by using a tree limb. Misjudging a little she nearly fumbles the maneuver when the branch cracks, but in the end it works out.

DC 10 grab an edge: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

She lands gracefully and takes off (25' movement, but I think the crowd slows her. On the other hand, Stepping stones say that 'The disks last until the end of your next turn, but you can Sustain the impulse.' so I do not think she needs to sustain it this round as she created them last round, so 2 actions for 50' movement slowed by crowd?).

Talk about the definition of FUBAR. Attending this thing was a big mistake. I sure hope I don't make the dishonor role.

Buttercup collides with a merchant as she looks behind her for pursuers or, basically, anyone looking at her with any kind of interest. Normally, such a collision would be intentional, and she briefly considers using the chaos to pick another pocket, but as freaked out as she is the urge quickly passes and her legs keep pumping.

Impasha is back standing, with 7hp after her focus spell but also with the Wounded 1 condition. Buttercup, you are right about the stones last to the end of the NEXT round. So you are good to rush away. Waiting for Myron to post, and then I'll update

Celas bounces off the guard that reacted a little to quickly to his improvise flip, now at substanial disadvantage his options are limited. I can't run, what was the saying of dad's? - on death ground fight. Sigh, I'm outmatched but whatever win or die. His reflexes faster than his thoughts, Celas bends to the left seeming to go for a side strike but instead bends his right knee striking down to the dottari's leg. Maybe I can hamstring him, 'bout my only chance.

Myron is prepared to keep fleeing, but he sees that he'll be easily outpaced so long as he's carrying the injured elf. He carefully puts him down in a sitting position against the fountain, and then brings his attention back to the dottari following him. He casts another briny bolt.

Impasha stands and uses her relationship with her patron to heal herself, gathering her sword and shield to enter the fray once again, despite her significant hurts.

Myron knows he can't carry the elf away fast enough to keep from getting accosted by the dottari, so he gently sets Elarion down against the fountain wall, and turns and blasts the pursing lawman(?) with a dousing of seawater. The salty deluge blinds the dottari temporarily as well.

Wiping the salt form his eyes, Red Dottari advances through the thinning crowd towards Myron, mace drawn. "Stop in the name of the Lord-Mayor and face justice!" cries the guardsman, threateningly. He raises his shield as ends up adjacent to the caster, but does not attack yet.

Elarion is back to 1 hp, leaning against the fountain wall but is back to consciousness and has the next action.

Standing up from prone, Elarion uses a bit of his healing ability on himself, knowing he must come to the aid of his noblewoman quickly. After the spell effects, Elarion is almost good as new.

Yellow Dottari, just attacked by Celas, returns the favor, striking once with his mace, and following up with a shield bash. Despite being off balance from his own feint, Celas is able to slip most of the damage from the mace, and avoid the shield bash altogether.

That's four more than she needs!

The soldier’s mace had rung her arm to pins and needles and she barely had any feeling left, but Bellara refused to give ground. Not now. Over the din she thought she caught Elarion’s voice? But she couldn't risk another look. Not now.

He's alive!

And was that Impasha’s boots scraping stone?

She's upright too then.

Bellara started laughing, nearly a cackle.

Staggering at the shove by a fleeing rioter, Celas feels a crunch as a mace hits him, fortunately at an off-angle so he takes a relatively small amount of damage. As he recovers his balance, the dottari's shield sweeps by missing him as his reflexes save him.

Celas wonders, What now? Should I surrender? Hang, Hanged, drawn, and quartered, or fed to devils? Pass, I can't win this fight but may as well go down here, probably hurt less too. Feinting is useless this professional is too good to fall for tricks, killing is his trade.
