Undead Lore: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Lawric doesn’t speak at first. He stands near the others, watching them work, small and still in the dim light.

He doesn’t jump to pick up a hammer, as it is clearly not his strength… but when a half-covered window is left unfinished, he steps toward it without being asked.

He studies the frame, the gaps, the angle of the improvised barrier. Then he shifts one of the boards slightly and drives in a few final nails with quiet, awkward precision.

“I AM NO BUILDER,” he says flatly, “BUT I KNOW WHAT THEY CAN BREAK THROUGH.”

It isn’t elegant. But it will hold.

Galimus sighs, frowning at the prospects. "It looks like we are just going to be doing our best," he answers Thurgan's question.

He's no carpenter, but he's been faced with enough places that were designed to keep him out that he knows what works and what doesn't.

He focuses on what works, to the best of his abilities.

Thurgan joins Galimus and Lawric in scavenging materials for an hour.

Sunset Minus Four:
Galimus: scavenge materials (7 total)

Lawric and Galimus begin reinforcing the openings. Lawric takes advantage of his knowledge of undead anatomy to nail the boards as inconveniently as possible (for them), while Galimus bends the nails in a way that the undead can't remove them.

Sunset Minus Three:
Galimus: Thievery (22) Success [9 openings, 9 intact, 1 reinforced]

Niaqun also goes to pick up some materials for later job ...

On the second hour he also tries to reinforce some opening, he uses the sticks in a different way, more like making a trap that closing any openings.

Go ahead and make your final check or two (remember, a Failure means it takes 2 hours to put a reinforcement up).

Also, feel free to discuss what will happen after dark. Nighttime begins about 8 pm and ends around 6 am. With 4 PCs, you'll need 10 h and 40 min for everyone to get a full rest, so if barriers are unfinished, you could stay up for an hour to finish it, or have them take first watch with a Perception penalty, etc.

I suppose it will come as no surprise that you will be attacked. If you can't reinforce every entrance, which entrace will you leave un-reinforced? Also, place yourselfs on Slide 5 where you will be sleeping.

Undead Lore: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Lawric works without instruction. He doesn’t lift heavy beams or haul crates, but he moves steadily from one weak point to another—checking, adjusting, reinforcing.

A few times, he pauses to press a hand against a boarded window or doorframe, as if listening to something on the other side. Then, wordlessly, he makes a correction: a shifted board, a second nail, a tighter seal.

Additional Roll:
Undead Lore: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Tactical Conversation:
I am of two minds.
Option #1: if there is an unreinfoced location leave it as the bedroom. The doorway makes a secondary choke point with no other access to the rest of the building.
Option #2: Leave one of the main room's not fully reenforced, where we can have the most characters present and available to respond.

Galimus continues to work diligently, the fall of the sun toward the horizon feeling very much like a blade coming for his neck. He would like some more wood and metal between him and death before those two spheres touch.

Thievery (S minus 2): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

His desperation works in his favor and he gets another passage well blocked.

Thievery (S minus 1): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

"If we don't have time to reinforce them all, lets leave the ones in the bedroom for last. It's got the fewest entrances into the rest of the the building and will be easiest to block off. We can sleep in the main room where the goods are. That way, we'll have room to maneuver if we have to fight," Galimus suggests as the sunlight gets ever darker and it seems unlikely that they'll get the place properly fortified in time.

Galimus finds displays of self-sacrificing nobility foolish to the point of nauseating. He rolls his eyes as both Lawric and Niaqun jump to inconvenience themselves.

Pragmatist as he is, he knows that his eyes are likely some of the best adapted for the darkest parts of the night and that lack of sleep will only hinder his ability to keep himself and the others alive.

So, as darkness falls across the land, he puts down his tools, pulls out his bedroll and finds a spot between the shelves.

"Whoever watches second wake me up when you're done. I suggest we close the door to the bedroom but open the door to the kitchen so that we can see in if anything breaks through."

With those words of wisdom spoken, he lays down and is soon asleep, almost as though he mentally flipped a switch.

HP 51 | AC 21/23 | Fort +10; Ref +6; Will +8; | Perc +6 (DV) | Speed 25 |

Thurgan lays out his bedroll in the storeroom, preferring the smaller room than the overly exposed retail space, and the likely interrupted sleep from the disturbance of the comings and goings (and light) of those on watch.

He lays his axe and shield within easy reach.

"I'm also happy out there in the dark, but here's hoping we stay in here, and that isn't a factor. If we keep the lantern low and the noise down - until things need to get bright and by then it will be loud - this place shouldn't draw any attention"

You guys should discuss this. There are enough lamps around to make bright light, but bright light may attract unwanted attention.

HP 51 | AC 21/23 | Fort +10; Ref +6; Will +8; | Perc +6 (DV) | Speed 25 |

Yes I was alluding to the notion that lamps can be dimmed quite low, and then turned up and brightened only if required; by maintaining noise and light discipline (minimal noise and light), we may avoid detection altogether. If we were being really tacti-cool, we'd also refrain from cooking in the building or generating any strong smells too - sadly, no napping next to the fireplace with a lovely fire.

Lawric has lowlight vision- so dim is a-ok. He will just struggle with full darkness until tomorrow when he can prepare light (it isn't in my default kit with this character). The intention of my post was Lawric going first, not having bright light in the rooms. Sorry that that wasn't clear. I just don't want to roll concealment in another potential combat

I think a dim lantern or low fire is fine, especially since not everyone can see in the absolute dark. We don't want it to look like a casino or football stadium during a night game.

lol casino lol

Niaqun stays up 1 hour to finish his work. He's able to finish it, quietly, and in dim light.

There are 9 openings, all 9 are intact, and all 9 are reinforced. I've turned all the barriers green, to indicate the best possible state. Edit: apologies, I realize now, after finishing the post, that I've turned some of them red, but trust me, they were all green at one point.

GM Screen:

Perception (Thurgan): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Both Niaqun and Lawric notice forms moving about the darkened streets of Fiorna's Faith. None seem to have noticed the neon lights promising "3x 4x 5x CRAPS". Or, perhaps they're just put off by the "6:5 BLACKJACK" signs because the house edge is too high.

Lawric called first watch (8:00-10:40 pm), and Galimus third watch (1:20-4:00 am), and I'm just going to roll for Thurgan and Niaqun. Thurgan 1d2 ⇒ 2 takes last watch (4:00-6:40 am), so Niaqun takes second watch (10:40 pm-1:20 am).

Niaqun goes to sleep about 9:00 pm, and Lawric wakes him up at 10:40 pm. Perhaps this night will pass by uneventfully, after all.

It is not to be.

At first, it looks as though only a single zombie notices the clinking of the slot machines, but steadily, more and more join it in turning the same slow, shambling direction towards the casino. Soon, hordes of the dead come swarming out of the darkness, advancing from all directions.

Dozens of zombies throw themselves at the reinforced doors, smashing their own bodies just to loosen a nail or two. But within seconds, the sacrifice of dozens have allowed six zombies to break through the 1d9 ⇒ 5 front door and 1d8 ⇒ 5 storage room window.

I'm including a DC 10 Perception check in Initiative to see who wakes up from the noise.

Lawric moves forward, keeping to the edge of the chaos. His eyes track the blood blooming beneath Galimus, already pooling in places it shouldn’t.

He raises one hand—not in panic, but in declaration.

“BREATH.”

A quiet pulse of vital energy rushes forward from his outstretched palm, threading through the air before sinking into Galimus’s form, still on the ground.

Man, these guys are big buckets of HP... I can't get to a place to see (and therefore heal) Thurgan. I am working on getting into a position where I can burst "heal" as harm undead- but even that isn't a ton of damage to them

Just a quick OOC note about the barricades - the waves of undead are significantly worse if you don't secure the house. There were, say, several dozen zombies that swarmed the house - the barricades took care of all but 6.

Thurgan feels fine, but he sees Grump wincing. The wound will have to be looked at after the combat is over.

Thurgan's first slash cuts deeply into Red, doing even more damage than expected. Weakness slashing 5, so total damage is -23. He can't quite cut Yellow, though.

Note that Grump is still prone.

Galimus is surprised when his request for "five more minutes" is answered with such violence. He's even more surprised when he opens his eyes and finds himself surrounded by the undead.
