Deerslicer nods toward the boat. "Sound like a plan." He surveys the area, trying to use his sneaky goblin brain to determine a plan of attack.

Is it day or night? Any way we can "sneak" up on the boat? Cover terrain we can move behind or anything?

Once you are all in his little sailboat, Zoha reaches out with one hand and concentrates. A thin mist surrounds the boat and he pilots it deftly across the harbor. As you approach Swift Huntress, you can see that the sails are furled, suggesting the ship is not planning to leave these waters anytime soon. No one is on deck. Spotting a rope ladder dangling over the side, Zoha pilots his craft under the lee of the ship until the ladder dangles down just above you.

"Good luck!" he whispers.

Where on the map does that ladder place us?

Let's fine any prisoners on board, and once we get them off we light this ship on fire...

Endra states with grim determination. She startups up the ladder, and as soon as her feet lands on the deck she reaches for her bow while scanning for trouble.

Amidships on the port side.

As you slip silently onto the deck of Swift Huntress, you can see that the ship has suffered battle damage and is listing several degrees to starboard. There is no one on deck. You can see doors leading into the forecastle and sterncastle, as well as a staircase leading down into the lower decks. To your right and left are closed lattices that let light and air down into the lower decks, and let sound rise up. You can hear a deep, guttural voice barking orders on the lower deck.

Endra does NOT head to the stairs, but rather quietly approaches one of the hatchways which may provide her with safer ability to hear conversation or see what's going on.

I prefer just the modifier for those things that should be secret (such as Stealth checks and Recall Knowledge checks.) For most other things I prefer you roll. But I don't get hung up on doing things "my" way, so no harm, no foul.

As you move cautiously to the grates in the deck, you can make out the dim outline of objects in the nearly lightless hold below. The only light filtering in the room comes from the two grates leading to the top deck as the gunports in front of the cannon on the broadside remain closed. Once again you see no people or movement. Cruel laughter and the sound of sloshing water drift through the southern doors.

I'm referring to the doors down in the hold, which I have indicated with red arrows.

Endra steals down the stair alone. In the gloom she can see that there are a pair of doors forward and another pair leading aft. The door to the forward hold stands slightly ajar. The old wood of the deck creaks as you approach. As you peek into the room, you see a forward hold with another hatch leading down. A bruised and sad-looking group of three men and a halfling drag water up from the lower deck and pass it along the line to the one who stands by an open window and tosses the water out.

A whip-thin and tough looking hobgoblin sits atop a short barrel, wearing a cruel grin. With him are three hobgoblin deckhands, doing nothing to help their captives bail. The deckhands are armed with various cruel-looking scimitars, while the bosun (the seated hobgoblin) is armed with a naval pike.

Unfortunately, they heard you approach and the Bosun bawls "Boarders! Abolitionists! Get them!"

From some directions, yes, you would have cover. You could increase that by using the Take Cover action.

I'm going to assume that Deerslicer makes his attack without Gracie's support benefit.

The YELLOW deckhand manages to block the bear's attack, but this opens him up for an attack from Deerslicer, who slashes the bugbear across the thigh.

And I'm assuming Endra's Purple is PINK.

Pink Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 221d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Endra draws an arrow and before she can fire, PINK slashes out at her with his scimitar, cutting a bloody line across her forearm. Biting back a cry, she fires, her first arrow catches the PINK deckhand in the throat, dropping him instantly. She quickly follows this with a barb that grazes the bosun's cheek, drawing blood.

Purlock, your movement did not bring you within sight of the enemy. At the bottom of the stairs, you'd have to move forward, then either right or left, then to one of the doors to see them. I'm going to put you at the door, with a drawn weapon.

Alanossë fires a split second after Endra, putting an arrow into the Bosun's chest. The tough hobgoblin snarls, not ready to die. The Bosun rushes the archers, wielding his dangerous naval pike. He slashes Alanossë deeply across the midriff, splashing blood across the decks. "Iron Pirates! To me! To me!" He tries to reverse and strike Endra with the butt of his pike, but the nimble elf dodges the blow

I've read through the thread, and I'm not sure where I got 16 points of damage. Was I hit by someone?

I have a distinct memory of it happening, but I appear to have crossed over into an alternate timeline because I can't find it! Never mind, I guess?

Gracie the Bear continues to attack Yellow, but the hobgoblin deflects her attacks. Deerslicer takes advantage and makes a deep cut on the deckhand's shin.

Endra, Purrlock and Alanossë all attack the Bosun, who manages to block or dodge Endra and Purrlock, but Alanossë places a couple of expertly aimed arrows into the villain's chest. He staggers, but keeps on fighting!

Step, Strike, Strike.

The Bosun closes on Alanossë, snarling and cursing, and slices the archer's left arm with his naval pike.

Hallow twists suddenly with the eerie rustling of an animate plant, and smashes the BLUE deckhand twice with its warhammer, knocking the hobgoblin to his knees and then putting him down forever.
