Rindle goes around gathering flowers, and everyone should be aware of Marigold's suspicions now.

Khunbish wrote:
Not sure what's the time crunch.

There actually is none now, since nobody has made any effort to confront Rindle. With Khunbish's Medicine +18 and Continual Recovery, everyone will get healed eventually, and Arfsnarf's Wounded condition clears. Rannarix's Clumsy condition clears as soon as the group moves through the gate into the next section.

The Pathfinders materialize clustered opposite a runic archway. Encounter maps are no longer necessary since you've already defeated the guardians, but if you want a visual, you can look to Slide 6.

Crafted entirely from psychic and arcane energy bound in runes and musical notes, the very fabric of this area bombards the PCs’ minds with pounding
sensory overload. As in the previous area, each Pathfinder is immobilized until they make a DC 24 Arcana or Occultism check to overcome the magic, or a DC 24 Will save to resist the magic.

The Pathfinders find that moving through the psychic level causes their thoughts to move too freely from their physical and spiritual forms. They find that even the slightest distraction sends their thought-form bodies into spasms, and traversing to the gate is extraordinarily difficult.

They succeed, eventually, but not without cost. Some of the runes materialize into fine-looking gemstones, but in their stupor, the Pathfinders aren't able to grab them.

This would have been a Treasure Bundle.

Passing through the gate of mind takes the Pathfinders to the final stretch of the rune-warped corridor. This room combines the energies of the previous two rooms with primal energy and life essences, forming a forge of creation that the mortals must pass through carefully in order to proceed. Aerin has a Success and a Critical Success, and Marigold and Itka have had three Successes now, so I'm just going to be open about it: Rindle is actively sabotaging your mission. Please describe how you're going to inform the rest of the team and/or confront him. We will be entering Encounter Mode, but how and when you confront will dictate the exact nature of the encounter (combat vs non-combat, map and map placement, etc.)

GM, Aerin, Marigold:
Before we decide, what would our characters know about how these failed checks will affect us?

Under normal circumstances, Itka would prefer to just attack him suddenly and trust that the party would back her up, but if she feels like she can't cast spells well because her mind is too borked (i.e., if there's a penalty that hasn't been stated yet), she would try a verbal confrontation instead.

Aerin, Itka, Marigold:
There's actually no stated penalty for failing. There would have been a bonus for succeeding. There's no barrier to initiating combat immediately - but as with every entry into Encounter Mode, there's no guarantee that Itka would act first. I'd give her a circumstance bonus to initiative, but if anyone were to roll higher, I'd frame it as "they saw Itka start and they jumped in quicker."

However, Marigold saw it coming from a mile away, and she warned Rannarix and Aerin.

We're going to be on Slide 12. This is how I'm going to set this combat up, since you confronted him in a really small space and it's not really fair to make you do two combats in a space like that: Rindle runs through the gate and transforms. Everyone will start at the top of the map, so Marigold, Rannarix, and Aerin will get to act before "Rindle" attacks, and everyone will have the benefit of knowing you're not attacking a Pathfinder. :) And hopefully Khunbish has space to Enlarge. :)

An idyllic meadow materializes, its borders marked by the easily identified bushes and topiaries of the Maze of the Open Road. The area seems free of planar intrusions or magical distortions, without a single living thing in sight.

Unfortunately, the sight greeting you is not so friendly - Rindle Rainfickle’s corpse. The halfling appears to have stabbed in the back and tucked under the hedges, along with the body of a squirrel that can only be the real Mr. Chitters. The fake Rindle and fake Mr. Chitters are just finishing transforming back into their real forms - a demon and a voidworm.
