Hey cmlobue, it’s GM Otha from Carrion Hill. Really appreciate you running this; Seeker missions can be tough to find. I played in your run of Torrent’s Last Will in last year’s Gameday and it was a lot of fun (I was Ingrge); looking forward to playing under you again!

Hi GM. You ran Quenly's last mission, Unleashing the Untouchable.

Quenly is a big box of tricks, I'll post a summary here in Discussion later for players' benefit.

Added Flyn's stats and token; I put his token up front as he usually scouts ahead but then falls back and peels off arrows from ranged during combat...

Quenly is a very flexible character with numerous tricks and tactics:

shapeshifting:

Quenly is built around the the Many Forms revelation. He sometimes uses it for utility of movement, sometimes for melee combat. He is able to cast many spells whilst shapechanged (not his level 6 spells though, so no Heal). Some of the more interesting forms have powerful breath weapons. (Many Forms functions as Greater Polymorph, Quenly's effective level for the Revelation is boosted by the elf favoured class bonus and a magic item).

sensory deprivation:

Quenly knows both Silence and Deeper Darkness, and is not impaired by either spell. Of course, the likelihood is that these spells could impair his allies, so this trick is very situational. (Incidentally Quenly is OK at stealth, and has the Vanish spell too.)

shadow conjuration – dragon ally:

Quenly uses shadow conjuration to copy the Draconic Ally spell. This gives him a long duration translator/interpreter and sensor. The Ally has blindsense and telepathy. Quenly normally chooses to use the nightmare dragon variety of ally, which gains See in Darkness.

channel the gift:

This spell gets its own little note. The spell (range=touch) means that Quenly uses a level 3 spell slot and an ally casts a spell of level 3 or below without losing that spell or slot. Quenly loves to get Heroism from a party member using this. Depending on the situation, Quenly may be willing to use multiple slots to allow a particular buff to be spread around multiple party members.

knowledge skills:

Quenly has only a smattering of knowledges, but has max ranks in History which is a specialism of his (being an Ancient Lorekeeper and a Scarab Sage it seemed apt). However, he has a few tricks up his sleeve thanks to a spell and a couple of choice magic items. Page-bound Epiphany generates up to a +10 circumstance bonus over 11 rounds, so is good for out-of-combat knowledge checks in a subject Quenly is trained in. Quenly's Scholar's Ring gives a nice +5 competence bonus to Know: History and allows a Legend Lore once per 5/days about a subject that Quenly has used the ring's competence bonus on in the last week. Lastly, the gruesome Lore Needle allows Quenly to apply his Know: History bonus to 3 other knowledge skill checks per day.

Most often Quenly is a support caster.

Hey GM, just an FYI since we may encounter Aspis. Here are potential mods Flyn has concerning Aspis Agents:

Grand Lodge Vanity
Aspis Hunter: You gain a +1 bonus on attack rolls and on weapon damage rolls against Aspis agents who wear clearly visible insignia showing their affiliation and rank.

Recurring Boons
• +2 on Knowledge (Local) checks concerning the Aspis Consortium
• +2 morale bonus on attack rolls and weapon damage rolls against Aspis agents inhabiting the Hao Jin Tapestry (highly doubt this will apply)

Faction Sheet
NEMESIS (9 goals): Once per adventure, you gain a +2 bonus on your next attack against an Aspis agent, and if you hit, you deal additional damage equal to the number of goals you have completed. Alternatively, you impose a –1 penalty on the agent’s next saving throw against a spell you cast; the penalty increases to –2 if you have completed seven or more goals.

As a note, I will be moving your initiative around a bit so that allies and enemies act in chunks. In a battle this size, alternating between one of my creatures, then one of you would take far too long. When I do, I will try to make the changes in your favor.

For reference, Silence is 20' radius, Deeper Darkness is 30'.

Quenly can telepathically direct the pathfinders to target squares but concealment still applies - let me know if/when you want the silence and darkness "switched off", it's just a matter of using a move action to grab the ioun stone.

I am travelling later today (overnight) so might be unable to post till tomorrow if Quenly's turn comes up before then.

Hopefully this is one of those scenarios where they give credit for bypassing using non-combative solutions. Batman for the win.

With two paladins in a mostly ‘good’ party, not killing sleeping neutral npc’s seems prudent.

Fwiw - Omrax last mission was with a group entirely composed of swashbuckling pirates.

Omrax took only a single attack in lieu of full attack to setup flank etc,

I have seen heads done both ways …single damage only to one head or one hit chops several heads as damage is spread across. Not sure if FAQ covers.

To be honest I am surprised it did not full attack us. But don’t know…lol…maybe trainer told it to be slow killing us afterall.

Just checking but it seems like it was within its 10’ reach of us to attack or provoke…but it did not attack?

Shel I did not move you Incase you want to move into flank this round instead.

I’m not going to flank just yet. As soon as I do, with all my little attacks, the sneak attack damage really starts adding up real quick on a single target.

We can target a couple of the heads at least?

And without improved sunder you always provoke an AoO.

That would make more of a show of it.

I think the challenge here looks like not killing the monster. If we all unleashed our full abilities I can't see a hydra lasting 2 rounds, let alone 6. Quenly and Flyn have dropped major demons that quickly.

GM, how much can we pull our punches? For example, could Quenly make his 5 attacks (in chimera form) and decide to miss with 3 of them (only actually roll 2)? We could all just single-attack instead of full attacking, but it would look like more of a display if we can deliberately miss.

Of course I may be completely blindsided if something unexpected happens :o

You can always choose to take a 1 on an action, even though there is rarely a reason to do so. There's no penalty for critical failure on an attack in this system (other than missing), so that is an option.

Heads have to be sundered.

For what it's worth, the primary goal for this mission is "staying in the arena for at least 6 rounds." Nothing says the hydra needs to be there and alive.

Ah well, if the arena boss is going to throw more monsters at us after we kill the hydra that makes a bit more sense.

Do we want to test that or just spread out and go total defense for four more rounds before killing it? I don’t think we can afford to dish out the amount of damage we just dealt in the first round without risk of killing it…

GM: are there any areas in the arena, like near the walls, that are in dim light? Just asking for my Hide in Plain Sight ability…
