<Do we have sufficient time to complete this task before nightfall?>
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
"I agree. They are quite strange and I would like to know more about them."
Talltree
|
Talltree starts with a cantrip (detect magic) and scans for mystical auras before using another cantrip (psychokinetic hand) to drop various small objects near and in one of the depressions.
GM Aerondor
|
While there is no magic as such detected, when Talltree drops a large stone into the depression it rapidly snaps shut. Now you think about it, there are a number of bulges in the area that look quite a bit like the new one that stands in front of you.
Talltree
|
The shirren jumps in surprise as the opening snaps shut. "Better watch out for those...whatever they are."
Did we happen to rest the tower on or near any of them?
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
Chrysanthemum blinks in surprise as the ground moves. "That's...not good."
GM Aerondor
|
Oh yes, there is one real near the base. If someone had fallen off the tower while it was being constructed, or while they were doing the calibration... it looks like they may have landed in it... Lucky you.
Tania PH 7
|
I am so sorry. RL got super nuts and I haven't had time to go online for fun for days and days.
Tania has been real quiet of late, just taking everything in, but she continues to look around for danger.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
GM Aerondor
|
Well, who knows what you might find inside one of those mounds if you could cut it open somehow... Of course, who knows what cutting it open might do...
Tania PH 7
|
"Could we shoot into one of those mounds? Or does anyone have jetpack or hover device to let us cut into them without getting inside ourselves?"
Khubelu
|
<These things remind me entirely too much of something's anatomy.>
GM Aerondor
|
I'll move you on to the next spot tomorrow if nobody has any desire to further inspect.
Tania PH 7
|
Tania makes sure nobody else is close, then tries shooting into one of the mounds to see if anything is inside and dangerous. If there is no hostile reaction, she'll risk getting a little closer to check it out.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Khubelu
|
Khubelu grabs a rock with a psychokinetic hand and moves it close to a mound from close to the range limit of the spell.
GM Aerondor
|
You can blast open one of the mounds. Inside you find the a horrid grey goo. Looking through it you find the mostly "digested" remains of one of those birds that attached you at the previous tower.
Also you find what looks like a pearl.. its not a pearl, but something that is created in a similar manner.
These "traps" all appear to be connected to one organism—much like some large root structure—and that the viscous fluid is a calcium-rich substance that serves as some form of blood.
Khubelu
|
<That is unpleasant. And beyond my ability to analyze, so I will leave it in your capable hands.>
Tania PH 7
|
Tania sighs, making sure she turns on her environmental protections before examining too closely, muttering something about only remember high school biology...
Life science: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Talltree
|
Life Science check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Talltree shrugs. "I don't know what that is. We should take it with us, and record everything else we can."
They peer intently at the mound. "Odd life-form, and well-camouflaged. I wonder if it has roots?"
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
Chrysanthemum keeps an eye for anything else trying to eat us, while she contemplates what the "mouths" might be.
Life Science: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Or not
GM Aerondor
|
With nothing more obvious to do... the team heads off again.
Heading to the last site, or back to base?
Expedition status: Two towers finished..
Time elapsed 7 hours - plus change for the fight.
Time til dusk 3 hours.
buggy damage: 7
cycle damage: 1
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
If we can finish the tower before dark, let's do it. Otherwise, back to base? Can we fix the buggy?
Tania PH 7
|
Hitting the tower or fixing the buggy/base both work for me.
GM Aerondor
|
Right, well, there are still a few hours before dark, time for the pilots and navigators to show their stuff again.
Khubelu
|
Khubelu heads the bike toward the last site, pouring on some extra speed so that they can hopefully complete the task and be back to base before nightfall.
Piloting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Norbert Smallfoot1
|
Norbert puts the buggy into gear and the tires spin as he guns the accelerator.
Piloting check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
and probably skids into a rock
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
Better a rock than a nasty mouth-thing.
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
For Tania as navigator Piloting: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
GM Aerondor
|
Norbert gives his passengers a bit of a worry as he slams on the buggy breaks and narrowly avoids a wash-out in the route, but apart from that the team make it to the final location provided without any major incident... just as the sun is approaching the horizon.
A long, shallow depression winds across the plateau in this area. Like the rest of the region, it is entirely covered in a gray, shelllike substance. The research team has labeled this region as a dry riverbed, though in fact no one is entirely sure if there was ever water here. The small crater walls rise to a height of about 4 feet, enough to hide someone lying down.
You arrive at the top of the ridge, which descends steeply.
Athletics check to descend, or if you are feeling brave, you could drive of the edge.
Further down the gully, towards the site indicated for the tower, you spot a large, green-skinned quadruped with a flame-colored crest and massive bony projections.
This is a cresteater, a predator native to Kasath and sometimes raised as pets by kasathas.
If you hit 21 then open the next spoiler as well.
If you hit 26 open the final one too!
Expedition status: at tower three
Time elapsed 9 hours - plus change for the fight and "trap" investigation.
Time til dusk 1 hours.
buggy damage: 7
cycle damage: 1
Talltree
|
"Odd...that looks just like a crest eater, a kasathan predator. If it is, I don't know how it got here. Kasathans supposedly raise them as pets, though, so it might have escaped from some."
Tania PH 7
|
Thanks for botting me
"Okay...so what do we do with it? Do you think it's tame?"
Khubelu
|
<What is it doing down there? I don't see a food source, unless it can eat whatever it is we're walking on - and I don't want to be a fish fry.>
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
Chrysanthemum hops out of the buggy and slides gracefully down the slope.
Athletics: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
But she catches her foot on some sort of protrusion and tumbles down in a heap.
Dirk Starcliffe
|
Dirk tries to climb.
Athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Seeing his fellow Starfinder fall he calls out.
"Chrysanthemum are you OK?"
Chrysanthemum Gabbro
|
Chrysanthemum waves up at Dirk from the ground. "Just fine. I meant to do that." She pushes herself upright, using her third hand to brush off a few clinging pieces of "gravel."
She will say this even if she's injured, because she obviously meant to do that. No one would do something that silly otherwise.
GM Aerondor
|
Both Chysanthemum and Dirk tumble down the steep slope.
ouch Chy: 1d6 ⇒ 2
ouch Dirk: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Status, out of combat
Talltree
Tania
Dirk 4 damage
Norbert 5 damage
Khebelu
Chrysanthemum 2 damage
Cresteater
Khubelu
|
<There must be something in the buggy.> Khubelu starts searching for a way down the cliff that involves less banging into things.
Tania PH 7
|
"Nothing like that here no. What if we took the wheels off the buggy or blocked it off somehow so that it doesn't move around if we use it to rappel?"
