The city of Korvosa has dark and deadly secrets. Those secrets are coming home to roost as some unlikely heroes are drawn into the underbelly in search of answers to their pasts.

With the plague’s final defeat, Korvosa settles in to a wounded silence, as if the citizens don’t quite believe that the epidemic has come to an end. At first, it seems as if the city is slowly healing and recovering from the tragedies it has suffered, but it soon becomes apparent that the damage dealt to Korvosa during the riots after Eodred II’s death and by the plague itself might have been even greater than anyone feared—and could be just the beginning of more sinister threats.

Ghil calls down to the kids in the muck on the warehouse floor. "Hey, it's a rescue!!! Come on up, the path behind me is clear. Let's get you out of here an to better places!"

My whip does have a 15ft reach but Giggles doesn't provoke an AoO from me because he has cover from Ariadne. She's probably skewered him to the stairs though.

Searching the upper floor finds no way down to the lower floor. The only entrance is the small door the Vedika glimpsed when she was sneaking about outside.

"Can you tell us if there's anything else we're going to find when we go down there? Maybe there are traps or some sort of hazard we need to know about?"

Nope, no objections here.

Nethen coils his whip into his hand as he helps the others gather up the valuables from the half-orc and the gnome. But why is it that I think we're not going to find him down there today?


Vazhimort jumps in the air to click his heels while pumping his fist.

"YEAH! Let's go! Vengeance! This is going to be great!"

I think we all realize that we need to go down, but it hasn't been clear where we need to go to go down. Rereading a bit, it looks like DBH gave Vedika an infodump while she was stealthing around. In that post, A3 (the slippery pier that only one person can walk on at a time) leads down to the ship at A11, and then we can take A12 to get to Lamm.

So we need to come up with a strategy for getting down the pier safely.

"All right. I'll see if I can jimmy the lock on the trapdoor. I need folks to stay back, the pier is old rotting wood and I don't want to go back into the water again today, especially with that shark that came nosing around," says Vedika.

The rogue advances cautiously toward the trapdoor around the back of the structure and produces her tools once more.

Using the map you can see that A8 drops lower than the rest of the building. Below that is only 3' between the floor and the river. So it's a crawl for most of you to reach the door. I'll say it is easy to get some planks and lay them across the walkways so you can reach the door without getting wet.

The good news is that thanks to the many pilings there the shark can't get into the area easily.

The brass key Yargan carried opens the bottom door. :)

The door opens and you are closer to finding Gadren Lamm.

Nethen follows Vedika's lead, moving carefully along the rotten and slippery planks so that he doesn't end up swimming in the filthy and surprisingly shark ridden water. "Any noise from inside?" he asks quietly, hoping that anyone beyond the door hasn't heard Vedika's attempts to crack the lock.

A13 Gaedren’s Playground

The air in this large room is chilly and stinks of the river, thanks
to a huge opening in the floor that drops away to the river shore three feet below. Several pilings emerge from the waters to support the roof eight feet above the floor, with mossy ropes slung between them. In two places, rusty manacles hang from the ropes over the water.

Two five-foot-wide walkways cross the hole to the other side of the chamber, where a collection of old cabinets, lockboxes, and piles of clutter are strewn about. Chipped porcelain plates, a cracked goblet, badly rusted silverware, an old wooden shield with a crossbow bolt
embedded in it, the odd dinged helm, and other “treasures” litter the floor of this side of the chamber.

Three tables heaped with clutter stand amid this mess. In the southwest corner, a wooden door provides access to a walled-off section.

Map updated. Action happens as Vedika crawls into the room.

Gaedren Lamm is a jaundiced and bent corpse of a man, his eyes yellowed and skin speckled from age. His left leg has a pronounced limp as he shuffles about. His old skin can no longer stand the chafe of armor more significant than padded armor, but the gray suit of armor he does wear is magical.

On his rare trips outside, he also wears a tattered wide-brimmed sun hat to protect his bald head from sunburn.

"You! How the hell did you find me?" He hisses as he sees Vedika.

His first action is odd? He fires his crossbow into the water. The bolt hits something just under the surface and with a roar of pain an Alligator bursts out of the water in front of you!

Gaedren was ready. His action was to provoke Gobbleguts, his pet Alligator into a fury. Gobbleguts burst out of the water looking for someone to kill.

I love seeing crits like that. I was playing in a PFS game at a con once where the rapier wielding rogue delivered a sneak attack crit with a rapier for 4 damage. He was really pissed, the rest of the table cracked up.

"Holy s#&!!" Nethen shouts as a huge alligator bursts from the pool, slopping foul smelling water across the floor. "Get past it, quick!" he shouts, hoping they can all squeeze through the door before the alligator can heave itself up and block the door.

Assuming Vedika moves out of the way...

Nethen tries to squeeze himself through the doorway and past the alligator, desperate the wreak his vengeance on the stooped old bastard across the room.

Escape Artist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Nethen's bulky physique is too broad to get through the small door easily and he has to squeeze through, leaving him at the mercy of the great beast.

Ghil eyes the tiny door with concern, and decides to wait until there's less of a cluster around it to try to get through. Instead, he calls another ghostly dagger into being, and it begins circling his body.

Vazhimort jumps back and forth and leans over the water trying to see what all of the commotion is in the room ahead. Being short in the realm of humans often means being at the back of the line.

He probably can't do much, so he'll focus on the mesmeric mirror trick he implanted into Ariadne's probably-undamaged brain earlier. The instant she's targeted, he'll activate the trick.

If by any chance he catches sight of Lamm, he'll cast ill omen on him.

Failing that, if he catches sight of the alligator, he'll cast sleep on it. DC 14 Will negates

I'm confused about what I have to do to enter the room. Apparently there's a DC 20 Escape Artist check somewhere along the way? But also I have a large alligator threatening me? Am I prone because of crawling in? Can I tumble with acrobatics? Am I moving at half speed? I don't know how to take my move at this point.

The Escape Artist check is to squeeze through the entrance as a movement action, instead of a complete round that leaves you open to attack. If you pull it off, you can move (enter) and attack or double move (using acrobatics to avoid getting attacked or get past it).

Make the escape artist check first. If sucessful, cary on with what you want to do now that you're in the room. If not, your turn's done and ends with you just inside the room

Sorry if it wasn't clear. Vedika got into the room, then things kicked off. No checks for Vedika, you are already in. Anyone else wanting to get in without it being a full move action to squeeze through the opening needs to make the Escape artist check. Except Vozhimort as he's small.

If I can I'll instead take that roll as an Acrobatics check then, so I can clear the way (heading west) without getting bit by the alligator. With a +7 that gives me a 20 on the Acrobatics check. Double move at half speed, so 6 squares.

Nethen squeezes into the room.

Vazhimort sends a Sleep spell at the Alligator.

Gobbleguts tries to bite into Nethen and snaps at the air.

Lamm moves away from the view of the doorway and snaps a shot at Vedika

Nethen rolls out of the way in fear as the alligator snaps it's enormous jaws at him. He manages to slip out of it's reach as the jaws crash shut, blasting Nethen with the thing's foetid breath. Moving away from the entrance he snaps his whip at the alligator's snout, trying to distract it from the others coming through the small door directly into it's path.

Free Action to 5ft step, Standard Action to attack the alligator.

Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6


Seeing that the alligator will need to be dealt with before they can focus on Lamm, Vazhimort directs his will at it in the form of his hypnotic stare. Then, he'll cast daze on the beast.

DC 13 Will, but with a -2 due to hypnotic stare.

If anyone strikes the alligator this round, Vazhimort will enhance the pain the strike causes due to his connection with it.

Painful stare, but only 1 extra damage.

Finally, he'll fit a crossbow bolt to his light crossbow.

Ghil waits at the door, peering through the opening to watch the action inside. If Vazhimort's spell affected the alligator, Ghil attempts to slip through, but if the alligator seems to retain all of its sense, Ghil summons another barbed chain to try to trip the alligator up.

If the alligator is dazed:

Escape Artist DC 20: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Full round: squeeze through tiny door

If the alligator is not dazed:

Standard: cast barbed chains vs alligator

Combat maneuver, trip, barbed chains: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
If hit, Will DC 15 or shaken, rounds: 1d4 ⇒ 3

You can all see the Alligator. You have to bend and contort to get a look, but the room is well lit and it's close to the door.
