Daraj on Takatorra: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35
Zhilan on Kyoko, kitsune bonus: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 16 + 2 = 19
You quickly realize that Takatorra is a student of the Tengu Sword Masters. Extremely skilled masters of the blade, some would argue they are without peer, which excel at combating and disarming multiple enemies at once. Often attacking so quickly as to look like a whirlwind of swinging sword strikes, leaving opponents off-balance, and often taking severe wounds that bleed incessantly. Crit success, on the dot, for additional information that follows from here. While clearly very talented and skilled, the fact he caries only two, lightly adorned, Tengu Gale Blades on him suggests he is only midway through his training. As the higher masters often carry as many as five swords at once into combat, each a masterpiece of craftsmanship and adorned appropriately for unparalleled masters of the blade.
The strange combination of magics is indicative of the Magaambyan Cascade Bearers. Specialists at defensive and buffing magics. Her age and skill level, however, suggests she is likely only in her third or fourth season of her Perquisite. Which makes it very strange for her to be this far from the school, and with no sign of her Sponsor... Unless another member of the Toughest is her Magaambyan Sponsor, or the Toughest' Patron is her Sponsor. Either way, entering into a Martial Arts tournament is a very strange way of 'trying to give back to the people' as is expected of someone at her rank in order to progress.

The travel proves fairly uneventful, even for those working on the ship, and as the afternoon wanes, Khorde draws your attention to an island off to the South West, that the ship is traveling towards. Heavily covered in jungle, and a few beaches, it appears to be only a few miles wide at the widest but twice at least as long, with several mountains. The largest of which stands closest to your approach.
Khorde Speaking"There's Bonmu, the eponymous 'Danger Island', and your home for the next few days. Each of your Patrons will be waiting at the docks on the Western edge of the island, where we will be setting in. If you have any questions about the island before we arrive, feel free to ask. Otherwise, it was a pleasure meeting all of you, and your most fine cooking. Good luck to each of you, I look forward to watching the festivities, and will be rooting for both of your teams to move on to the main event."

Daraj l'Bayal, Mulitt Hero |

"I don't suppose you can tell us what exactly makes this 'Danger Island'?'
Daraj will also share the information from the above spoiler with the Loong Shots once we are alone.

Jinyi Zan |

Jinyi passes the trip uneventfully, knowing better than to try his hand at working, and never joining in any card games on deck, though he does watch the proceedings with rapt interest. What he does do, though, is offer music to help ease the passage of time, either by singing or summoning a flute.
The music stops as Khorde gets their attention to point out their approach to Bonmu, and Jinyi moves to the ship's railing to watch their approach. His fingers drum on the railing, though whether in anticipation or in anxiety, it's unclear.

Nato Iru Kin |

Iru sticks to his morning meditation ritual. He manages to work up enough sweat during his daily takes to make up for his daily exercise regimen.
Iru gathers his things and moves to the front of the ship. "Any idea how many teams there are this time?"

Lady Ōtsuka Zhilan |

"I can answer that Daraj. A tsunami struck this poor island many years ago, a catastrophe of large proportions I assure you. Much of the population fled with some holdout, those fleeing believed the island to be cursed from what I have learned," she says looking the island from the safety of the ship from afar, "Many beasts roam this land now, far treacherous for that of the simple folk to live and prosper. All manner of threats."

![]() |
Khorde will nod his assent to what Zhilan said, "Indeed... And some even say those individuals who tried to flee before the tsunami's wrath, but failed, still haunt the island to this day."
He will look over to Iru, "I don't know the full specifics of how many were chosen for this preliminary round. But if the scuttlebutt amongst my fellow captains is to be believed, there's north of thirty teams or so coming here, your two teams included... All I do know with certainty is that the main tournament will only have room for eight... So I wish you all the best of luck."

![]() |
As the Sea Questor pulls up to the docks, there are dozens of ships here from around Golarion. More than would be necessary for only the expected number of teams. The crowd on-shore confirms that, as there are scores of individuals in matching uniform garb going about various duties, clearly in final preparations for the event. Meanwhile, all of the entrant teams are lined up in their respective groups, stretching, sparing, or otherwise showing their impatience to get underway. A quick glance, however, notes that one of the groups is exceedingly larger than the others. With somewhere between thirty and fifty individuals, all practicing together.
As your ship comes to a rest along the docks, a very familiar old Kitsune is having a friendly chat with a somewhat exasperated looking gnome dressed in very fine clothing.
Tino smiles and waves at the two, calling out, "Master Bon! We made it! Sorry for the delay!" Before gathering his fellows and quickly making their way down the ramp. With even Kyoko quickly following in step, instead of her more usual antics.
As the gnome turns in response to being called, he quickly brightens, and excuses himself from Old Man Loong. Busily chatting away with the members of Tino's Toughest as the Old Man makes his way over to your group. "I trust you had a rather enlightening trip from Goka?"
The way he smiles as he says it means he definitely knew your ship was going to be double-booked, and hopes you took the opportunity to learn about one of your competitors.

Daraj l'Bayal, Mulitt Hero |

Society: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (5) + 18 = 23
"Aye, it was quite the educational voyage. And I made sure to put extra butter in the portions for the others. There's quite a crowd here."

![]() |
You debate on further conversation as the Old Man waits patiently and the air buzzes with anticipation of the coming event.
After a few minutes, a cloister of red-and-gold-outfitted monks arrives at the docks and calls the assembly to order. One monk meets with each team and introduces themself as the team’s attendant and guide for the duration of their time on Bonmu.
A young woman in the uniform of the Guides approaches your party and bows deeply to each of you in turn before speaking in a soft voice, "Greetings. My name is Ingdani, and it will be my pleasure to work as your party's Guide for the duration of the Preliminary round. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, as well as act as a spectator on your time here. Be aware, that I carry a staff which, at sun-down each day, transmits a full record of everything that has transpired in its vicinity for the day, to various Viewing Orbs around the Docks here, and in the city of Goka. I will detail further in a moment, but first..." She will motion for you all to look to a specific place at the docks.
*----*----*----*---*---*Beginning of Box Text*----*----*----*----*---*
An old man wearing brilliant robes arrives by boat at the docks. All the monks, including Ingdani, bow to the man and a hush falls over the crowd as the wizened man steps onto one of the docks and clears his throat. Even the ocean’s waves seem to cease their crashing for a dramatic moment, and then the man speaks in a loud and clear voice that carries over all those gathered.
“I am Sifu Xho Nuo—Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix Tournament and guardian of the legacy of Hao Jin, the immortal sorcerer in whose name you are gathered here.
Know that in simply receiving an invitation to qualify for the tournament, you have already earned a place among the greatest fighters Golarion has ever known. However, only eight teams may continue on to the tournament proper, and that is why you are here today. Welcome to the island of Bonmu, or, as dubbed by many including Lady Hao Jin, ‘Danger Island.’ This will be your home for the next few days, and it is here where you will earn the right to enter the tournament.
“Bonmu is vast. It is a place of ancient ruins and sites left untouched by the centuries. Lady Hao Jin has reclaimed this place and picked out a suitable location for each team to reside during their stay. Of course, nothing is given freely at the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. Each team has been assigned a specific location somewhere on this island, but many of these sites are filled with dangerous creatures or worse. It falls to you to make your site safe. Within your residence you will find the Phoenix Necklace and three Silver Feathers. Your mission here is to acquire and keep seven more such Silver Feathers for a combined total of ten.
“Without further delay, I leave you to the whims of Bonmu. The pre-qualifier begins at sunrise tomorrow. May the worthiest win!”
At that, the teams around you burst into excited conversations with their escorts and soon rush toward their residences. Danger Island awaits!
*----*----*----*----*End of Box Text*----*-----*----*----*----*----*---*
Ingdani will speak to the Old Man "As you are aware, your room awaits you amongst the Patron's Quarters here on the docks. May your stay be comfortable, and your Team be blessed with success."
Old Man Loong smiles, bows to her, and waves at you all as he heads towards the most expensive looking structures along the docks. A place where all the well-to-do individuals in the crowd are making their way towards. Ingdani will then turn to the party and bow again, "Before we begin with the details of your stay. Please, do me the honor of introducing yourselves." She smiles politely at you all.
Images of both Sifu Xho Nuo and Ingdani are available in your Journal in Roll 20.

![]() |
Ingdani will smile, "Of course. Your place of residence will be at a, long abandoned, temple of Irori. Roughly a third of a mile from here. It is in a general state of disrepair, but I am assured that there are multiple rooms with protection from the elements."
Zathra perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24
Daraj perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23
Zhilan perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35
Iru perception: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (9) + 18 = 27
Jinyi perception: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (5) + 19 = 24
You are all fairly certain she knows more than she is letting on with that statement. Zhilan is pretty sure from Ingdani's response that there are some kind of hazards in the location. However, also sure that Ingdani has not been there herself, and doesn't know the exact nature of those dangers. Everyone succeeded on their sense-motive, Zhilan got a crit success.

Daraj l'Bayal, Mulitt Hero |

"My name is Daraj l'Bayal," the alchemist says, bowing to their guide. "It is an honor to be here and under your guidance.
"If you will forgive a fool of a dwarf, however, may I ask... how is it that we are to acquire more feathers?"
Daraj assumes the answer is "beat people up and take their stuff", but wants to hear it from them.

![]() |
She nods "A very important question Daraj. As such, I shall read you the rules of this pre-liminary round, which should answer your question at length, and possibly create others." She will draw a scroll from her robes and hands it over for you to read along if you wish as she names them off.
"The qualifying round has a number of rules.
• The commands of the emissary and his agents are to be obeyed at all times, and the emissary’s word is final. None shall take violent action against the emissary or his agents.
• The emissary employs a number of enforcers to maintain order on the island. The enforcers are agents of the emissary and so have the authority to declare unique challenges and matches. As well as the costs or rewards, if any.
• To qualify for the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, a team must collect a total of 10 silver feathers. The vast majority of feathers have been strewn throughout the regions of Danger Island. However, a team can also attempt to earn feathers by challenging another team to a match and wagering feathers.
• Teams can verbally challenge one another to a match at any time once the qualifying round begins except for designated 'safe hours' (every night from midnight to sunrise). A team must challenge another team in the presence of an enforcer. A challenged team must accept the challenge or be disqualified.
• Once a match has been declared, the challengers must wager between one and three feathers. The defenders must then match the wager; if a defending team can’t match the wager, they must wager their remaining feathers. Once the wagers are placed, the feathers are handed to the enforcer, who takes both teams to the nearest designated fighting arena.
• Teams can also agree to fight one another without making a wager, in which case they are free to fight anywhere on the island, and the defending team isn’t required to accept the challenge.
• Once at the fighting area, the challenge begins. Only the two teams are allowed to participate in the challenge, unless an Enforced declares otherwise. Neither team can accept aid from anyone not participating in the challenge. The challenge is a free-for-all between both teams. The last team standing is the winner. A team can choose to yield and forfeit at any time during the challenge. Failing to honor the forfeit results in a disqualification. As all Phoenix Necklaces are capable of rendering a Team's attacks and spells completely non-lethal at no further incident to the holding team. Causing intentional Lethal harm is grounds for disqualification.
• After a match, the winning team can’t challenge the losing team again for the duration of the event. The losing team doesn’t have this restriction, however, and can challenge a team that has beaten them to rematches until the losing team either runs out of feathers or wins. Finally, any team with 10 or more feathers is prohibited from issuing challenges to other teams, though other teams are still allowed to challenge them.
• All teams must be able to readily present their Phoenix Necklace and at least 1 Silver Feather to the emissary or his enforcers upon request. Failure to do so will result in immediate disqualification.
• No contestant may leave Bonmu in any way, for any reason, until the conclusion of the qualifying round, unless they are disqualified or lose all of their silver feathers.
• The qualifying round lasts a total of four days, starting tomorrow. On the fourth day, any team with a complete set of silver feathers can visit Mount Haminabu to confirm their entry into the tournament by presenting their Necklace and ten Feathers to Hao Jin. Once eight teams have qualified for the tournament, the qualifying round is over, and all remaining teams are immediately disqualified, even if they have enough Silver Feathers.
Any further questions?"

Jinyi Zan |

Jinyi bows as the introductions seem to pass on to him. He's remained quiet, watching the proceedings, clearly a bit out of his element now that they've so completely left the streets of Goka.
"Jinyi Zan, at your service. These terms seem fair."

Lady Ōtsuka Zhilan |

Society + Bonus: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 16 + 2 = 24
The kitsune woman would take note of the wealthy gnome, wondering to herself if she had known such a figure before. This was of course if they actually needed to know such a thing. She instead put her focus on this Ingdani, noticing potentially that she was holding off on possibly important information.
"My name is Lady Otsuka Zhilan. This place we are to stay at, you speak of protection from such island's conditions yet... hesitation is in your voice. Why is that?"

Nato Iru Kin |

Iru bows, "I am Nato Iru Kin."
"I too wonder why you hesitate"
After listening to the rules of the tournament, he nods. "The rules sound fair and understandable. We shall compete with honor"

![]() |
Zhilan will not have heard of the gnome before. However, the country of Quain maintains it's power as primarily an economic country, supported in large part by it's trade of rare gems and metals. As such, anyone of sufficient power in their merchant's guild will have earned notable money and prestige for the region.
Ingdani will cock a soft smile at your directness, "I hesitate, as I do not wish to provide any false information. That said, I am also under expectations to not provide 'unnecessary aid' to you all during your stay. After-all, this is a round to test your skills at large and worthiness to enter the final tournament."
She will smile wider, "I am, however, fully at liberty to determine what is, or isn't, 'necessary aid'. So, depending on how you face the tasks ahead, I may find it in my heart to be more... forthcoming... in the future... As such, consider tonight, and any trials you may face during it, to be your first test. With possible rewards depending on how you perform."
She will wait to see if their are any further questions, before leading you towards your 'residence.'

![]() |
As she has heard no more questions, Ingdani turns and begins to lead you all away from the docks. You travel less than a dozen paces, however, when Tino comes sprinting up, the rest of the Toughest, and an older Guide, following on his heels.
"We overheard that you will be staying at the Temple or Irori. What luck! We, ourselves, will be staying over at the Library of Gruhastha. From what I could tell on our map, the two aren't that far apart. I'm going to guess less than a mile... So... Since we'll be headed in the same general direction, and have a lot of time left in the day.. .Perhaps you'd all be interested in a quick, friendly, match? Not a true contest, really. I mean, neither of us have any feathers yet or anything. Just figured, you know, we could get to know each-other a bit more. And besides, we are all here to participate in a tournament, but we may not both make it. So it'd be a shame not to get a chance to test off against each other at least once, right?"
His smile and demeanor all suggest he is being completely sincere, and the other Toughest look intrigued about what all you can do. Further, both Guides seem sincerely interested in how you all choose to respond.

Daraj l'Bayal, Mulitt Hero |

Daraj figures that the even-more-unspoken message from Loong was to not give away any information about their team, and starts reviewing his glaive forms to hopefully look competent without revealing his primary fighting style.
"Sure. I could stretch my legs a bit after the sea voyage."

Jinyi Zan |

Jinyi sighs, before linking his hands and stretching them up high over his head, as if to wake his body up.
"I suppose there's no harm in it."

Flurry 2 vs falt-footed: 1d20 + 20 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 20 - 4 = 18
But really seems really off balance from all the attacks he took, and whiffs horribly... He then causes his hand to glow and taps his chest, seeming to recover greatly.

Lady Zhilan |

Zhilan smiled as she felt fate was favoring them and it was time to get some fun revenge, nothing personal, against the Kitsune thief. After all, crimes were crimes and she was an enforcer of and representative of state will.
She'd hop on one foot, moving as she got clear sight towards Ji-Yook, "Kokokon," she laughed in a fox like manner maniacally almost as the as the more human looking kitsune began to cast, "Punishment is due to all eventually, may you feel such no. Break the spirit, pull it from its fleshy confinement, kookokon"
Ji-Yook would soon feel a terrible pain, Zhilam not intending to take her soul but simply let it free from the body only for a short period.
Zhilan cast RIP THE SPIRIT'S two action version against Ji yook. DC 30 Fortitude Save. Any fail receives the drain condition, typical save stuff as well. This is her signature as well so she shall heighten it.
Your Soul is mine!!: 12d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 1, 1, 1, 4, 3, 3, 4, 2, 2) = 26

Ji-Yook fort save: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Ji-Yook seems taken aback by the spell, and the others in the Toughest all seem to shift to slightly more grim-faced over it.
Fail. Damage and Drained accounted for. You get the feeling that triggering a spell that risks full on killing a target if you rolled high, and they rolled poorly, does not sit well with them. Considering this was supposed to be a friendly bout, and they were taking steps to make everything of their own fully non-lethal. Including avoiding lethal spells from the casters. A quick glance at the Guides suggest they, too, have taken note of this.
Kyoko will cast Haste on Ji-Yook, then shoots an arrow at Zhilan, which seems to fly mch more forcefully than normal.
Warden's Fury, non lethal: 1d20 + 18 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 18 - 2 = 20
The arrow lands wide, but it embeds itself halfway up the shaft into the nearby compacted earth.
Yabin will move forward and cast Haste on Takatorra.

Nato Iru Kin |

Iru continues to strike at Tino.

bludgeoning: 2d6 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 + 1 = 17
force: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Attacks were made while Tino was flanked
Noticing that he is now flanked, Iru will take a step.

Daraj l'Bayal, Mulitt Hero |

Daraj steps again, hoping to slowly approach the other combatants, and reverses his strikes from the last round.
+1 Glaive, Nonlethal, vs. Human: 1d20 + 17 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 17 - 2 = 33

Nonlethal Slashing Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Zathra |

Zathra steps away from Takatorra follows up with a telekinetic projectile aimed at Tino.
Telekinetic Projectile: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (14) + 19 = 33
Damage: 6d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 5, 3, 6) + 4 = 26
Tarik continues to pound on the champion as well, knocking him back down again!
Furious Strike: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (19) + 22 = 41
Damage: 4d8 + 9 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 4) + 9 = 21
Zathra: Step, Telekinetic Projectile. Tarik: Furious Strike, Knockdown

As Daraj moved adjacent to Tarik, he becomes dazzled by Zhathra's Cloak of Colors on Tarik. (it does not specify "enemies" are dazzled, but rather "creatures".) Rolling the flat checks for you to keep things moving.
flat check tino: 1d20 ⇒ 8
flat check takatorra: 1d20 ⇒ 6
both pass
Tino takes an absolute beating from the party, being crit then punched twice more by Iru, and clipped by Daraj, who misses the Tengu. I had been treating as such Iru. I am happy to treat secondary damage as lethal or non-lethal per the primary damage, so you're good with the force damage too.
He then takes a missile to the chest from Zathra, and more unhappy grimaces goes around the opposing party and onlookers, before Tino is knocked down again by another crit from Tarik. As tarik's attacks are also natural weapons, I have been letting him non-lethally so far too, without negatives. Feel free to tell me it was lethal instead, if you wish, for whatever side effect that may get from all these disapproving looks.
After all the attacks Tino looks pretty poor in shape but is still conscious and battle capable. However he stands by the agreement of a friendly bout, and thus being well below half health bows his head in respect to Iru, before signalling his own personal surrender.
Ji-Yook spends her Hasted action to move to flank Daraj, and then slashes at him with her claws
Claws, non-lethal, vs flat-footed: 1d20 + 19 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 19 - 2 = 36
oo, a hit finally
slashing damage, including sneak attack.: 2d4 + 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (2, 1) + (4, 4) + 8 = 19
She then slams a powerful blast of foxfire at Iru, trying to clip him just-so.
Fox-fire blast,non-lethal, map: 1d20 + 20 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 20 - 4 - 2 = 33
This time her strike hits true, dealing damage and knocking him back 5 feet.

I don't see a spell list for him anywhere. so following previous turn actions
Jinyi attempts to keep the morale high for his allies, casting Inspire Courage again.
He then takes two non-lethal shots at Yabin.
Shortbow, ic, non-lethal: 1d20 + 20 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 20 - 2 = 20
First shot goes wide.
shortbow, ic, map, non-lethal: 1d20 + 20 - 2 - 5 ⇒ (20) + 20 - 2 - 5 = 33
piercing damage: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 3) + 1 = 8
deadly d10: 1d10 ⇒ 4
Warding Strike: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (5) + 18 = 23
But he uses the aim from the first shot to home in on the second. Striking a telling blow, his arrow flitting past the one shot by Kyoko to try and intercept it.
Takatorra let's loose a whirlwind of blows at Daraj, who is flanked by Ji-Yook.
Blade Barrage attack 1, non-lethal, vs flat-footed: 1d20 + 22 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 22 - 2 = 23
But misses with the first one.
Blade Barrage attack 2, non-lethal, vs flat-footed: 1d20 + 22 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 22 - 2 - 4 = 29
slashing, forceful: 2d6 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 10 + 2 = 16
Hits with the second, knocking the wind from Daraj.
Blade Barrage attack 3, non-lethal, vs flat-footed: 1d20 + 22 - 2 - 8 ⇒ (6) + 22 - 2 - 8 = 18
Misses with the third.
He then strikes again
Gale blade, nonlethal, vs flat footed. so much map: 1d20 + 22 - 2 - 8 ⇒ (13) + 22 - 2 - 8 = 25
But only manages to brush his hair some.
Finally, he spends his Haste action for one more strike. Luckily, he couldn't use it to combine with that previous action for another barrage. Simply because Haste specifies specific actions for it's Quickened conditions.
Gale blade, nonlethal, vs flat footed. so much map: 1d20 + 22 - 2 - 8 ⇒ (5) + 22 - 2 - 8 = 17
But it looks more like his actions were more for show than actually inflicting injury. Demonstrating his speed with the blade more than his success. Only way I can explain this many sub 10 rolls for these guys at this point XD

Lady Zhilan |

Realizing that maybe using some her more potent magic was a bit too much, Zhilan decided that it would be best for her to fall back on helping her allies than potentially and accidentally ripping the soul from a friendly competitor. Instead she danced around on one foot, waving her arms and chanting in a Sylvan tongue as she fills Iru with envigorating power.
Casting Heroism At 6th level as Signature spell. +2 Toward attacks, perception, saves, and skill checks for 10 minutes. Costs 2 action. Passing on 3rd.

Kyoko casts a spell that causes Takatorra to grow in size, she then takes a shot with her bow at Zathra, once again coming in at her surprisingly powerful.
Warden's Fury, non-lethal, light cover: 1d20 + 19 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 19 - 2 - 2 = 33 and that looks like a hit finally
non-lethal piercing damage: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (3, 1, 8) + 5 = 17

Beak, Flanking: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (13) + 22 = 35
Nonlethal Piercing Damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (3, 5) + 7 = 15
Act Together to have both Zathra and Tarik Step. Tarik Strikes and uses Knockdown on a successful hit.
Also, Tarik is Large-sized. Not sure how to change his scale on the battle map.

Daraj l'Bayal, Mulitt Hero |

Daraj is not happy to be flanked by a giant bird. He takes a step into a safer position and continues his attacks.
