Night of the Gray Death

Slight retcon, earlier when Morak gave you some potions, he also gave you a very rare potion, one of Fire Shield. It's normally not obtainable as a potion as a 4th level spell. In addition in the courtyard there were 4 guards not 3

As Tygora puffs out her chest she looks more imposing, and with a beat of its wings the fire mephit suddenly grows much larger, resembling some sort of winged lizard.

In addition a dark shape steps out from behind the throne where he must have been hiding, a most imposing ifrit armed with a magnificent flaming scimitar and bedecked in shining full-plate and holding a heavy shield in his off-hand.

Enora:
That's not a fire mephit at all, it's a flame drake! A type of armless dragon known for its ability to belch fireballs

Tsadoc:
It's not a fire mephit at all, it's something else you don't recognise (I was going to keep your roll but with your knowledge (arcana) bonus, but you don't appear to be trained

Almaas:
That's not a fire mephit at all, it's a flame drake! A type of armless dragon known for its ability to belch fireballs, though it is also immune to fire and vulnerable to cold. If you'd to change your bane that's fine

GM screen:
Uktak init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Tygora rises up above her throne, spiraling 20 feet into the air, then points her fingers at Almass firing 3 quick beams at him.

Ranged touch, cover: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33

Fire damage: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 2) = 11
42 fire damage to Almaas

She then conjures some magic and brings her arm down in an arc as if slicing a line across the front row of pathfinders, where a wall of fire suddenly erupts, burning Crowe, Tsadoc and Abram severely and the others less intensely.

Front row fire damage: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (2, 2) + 11 = 15

@GM: Thanks for the possibility to change the bane ability. I will target the ifrits in the back next round anyway so I’ll change to outsider (native).

Night of the Gray Death

Both sets of doors are currently closed, there are no signs of the ifrit guards at present, though it might be reasonable to assume they'll be headed your way soon. I'd left their tokens on the map erroneously

I'm reluctant to delay or bot Crowe at this stage, but I'll do so on Monday if they don't check in this weekend.

Night of the Gray Death

Delaying Crowe

Uktak follows his queen's instructions, marching methodically toward Crowe, whom he strikes with his scimitar while holding his shield to protect himself.

Tsadoc moves to the other side of Abram and casts a spell. His muscles bulge like a bear. "Hmmm.... Did it work I can't tell?"

move, cast [i]bear's strength]/i], free action to command Martin

In the language of his people, Tsadoc commands [i]"Martin! Attack!" The stegosaurus moves forward out of the flames and circles around to send tail full of spikes at the Uktak.

Martin is Large, so probably has the greater damage of 15. His move probably provokes an AoO, but he will leave the flames. 37 (or 27) hp of 42
Tail: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15, piercing: 2d8 + 1 ⇒ (3, 7) + 1 = 11 plus trip: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Night of the Gray Death

Tsadoc I believe you need to roll for Handle Animal when Martin is injured as the dc is 12 rather than the normal 10 and you only have +9 with him (as far as I can tell). I know it's a free action but the only way it makes sense for me the mechanic to exist is to only allow the attempt once per round. In this case being currently in some fire would count as a +2 bonus so we can waive this one

Uktak swings his scimitar at Martin as he moves around

Scimitar: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18

but it merely scrapes against Martin's tough hide. Martin then aims his tail at Uktak, but the skillfull ifrit ducks under it and it narroly passes above his head. Crowe flies into a rage at being burned at stabbed, draws his mighty earthbreaker as he steps out of the flame, and sends it flying at Uktak in a mighty overhand smash

Earthbreaker: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22
Bludgeoning: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (6, 6) + 13 = 25

but this time Uktar takes it on his heavy shield and it creates a thunderous BOOOM like a gong signalling the start of combat.

The drake takes a step back and coughs forth a ball of flame aimed at the Pathfinders.

Night of the Gray Death

Let me know if there should be extra damage from bull's strength Abram

Abram slams into the flame drake and tears a chunk out of it with his powerful bite. Being the first pathfinder to draw blood, he marks himself as a target and draws the attention of Queen Tygora herself, who quickly shoots three beams of pure fire at him from her position above.

Ranged touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Fire damage: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 3) = 10

34 Fire damage to Abram

All three hit and do severe damage to the raging skinwalker. Content that her drake can finish him off, Tygora turns her attention to another pressing threat, the halfling spellcaster!

She swoops down, drawing her large falchion as she flies through the air and stops 10 feet up, just in range to chop down at Enora. This will provoke from Martin

Falchion: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (10) + 18 = 28
Slashing, fire: 2d6 + 12 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 12 + (3) = 20

The mighty falchion pops Enora's arcane barrier like a bubble and cuts into the halfling beneath.

20 damage to Enora. (3 of which was fire) I think the barrier had 10 so 10 hp damage?

Uktak continues his methodical attack on Crowe.

scimitar,PA: 1d20 + 16 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 16 - 3 = 24

scimitar,PA: 1d20 + 11 - 3 ⇒ (2) + 11 - 3 = 10
17 damage to Crowe (1 of which was fire)

One of his attacks hits the already injured Crowe, who is now severely wounded, blood dripping on the marble floors.

Meanwhile, you can hear the sound of the outer door being opened and guards preparing to rush in.

You think you've probably got until round 3 until they join in

He then lowers his head and and charges at the drake. Wouldn't it be so cool if we could fight like wolves? "We need to fight like a wolf pack! Or an orca pod!" the druid says as he breaches an imaginary ocean's surface.
Charge: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 11 + 1 = 23, armor spike: 1d6 ⇒ 2 rhino hide: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 3) + 7 = 13

Night of the Gray Death

I've realised a couple of things. 1)Tygora doesn't get extra fire damage with her Falchion, so Enora can have 3HP back. 2)The guards outside is an optional encounter, so I'm going to skip it (it feels very harsh to me to punish you for succeeding on diplomacy by making you do two encounters at once)

Martin swings his tail at Tygora, who avoids it contemptuously. Aided by Enora's magical speed boost though he catches her when pulling his tail back, and the queen looks very annoyed, even though his best efforts to topple her over in the air come nowhere close.

"Impudence!"

This is bad news for Martin

Tsadoc charges the flame drake in alliance with Abram, and pierces it with his armour spikes and it wails in rage and pain. Over the top of that horrendous noise though you can hear a swell of noise from outside, it sounds like the oreads are attacking the walls! Valsog's deep voice can be heard calling for an attack, and the guards who were hastening to the throne room suddenly have more pressing business to attend to.

PERFECT STRIKE (Bows):
You must declare that you are using this feat before you make your attack roll (thus a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). You can roll your attack roll twice and take the higher result. If one of these rolls is a critical threat, the other roll is used as your confirmation roll (your choice if they are both critical threats). You may attempt a perfect attack once per day for every four levels you have attained (but see Special), and no more than once per round. Special: A weapon master monk or zen archer monk receives Perfect Strike as a bonus feat at 1st level, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. A monk may attempt a perfect strike attack a number of times per day equal to his monk level, plus one more time per day for every four levels he has in classes other than monk.

Night of the Gray Death

There was no surprise round. Round 1 was draw bow and cast divine favour, round 2 was draw and drink potion, round 3 is coming up. We can save that monstrous round until after the Drake though!

Night of the Gray Death

Crowe unleashes a fast flurry of raging earthbreaker blows on Uktak, his earthbreaker suddenly crackling with electricity

Bludgeoning, PA: 2d6 + 13 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 13 + 6 + (2) = 30

The martial ifrit manages to avoid all but the first blow, which thunders as it strikes a devastating blow on him.

The drake finds itself suddenly attacks, and unleashes upon Abram and Tsadoc

Bite vs. Abram: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Tail strike vs. Tsadoc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

It stumbles backwards with the force of Abram's charge though and finds its jaws snapping on empty air, and Tsadoc's armour easily deflects the weak tail strike.

Almaas then breathes a calming breath before firing a quick barrage of perfectly aimed arrows at the queen. You can see a look of almost amusement on her face at first as she sees such a small creature firing wooden sticks at her, but as each magically enhanced arrow finds its mark she gets more and more concerned until the last one strikes right into her eye, taking her down.

Actually quick question Almaas, you've got bless in your attack bonus there, I don't recall anyone casting that. Is that some from some passive thing? It makes a difference if she's down or not.

Night of the Gray Death

Almaas's first shot missed, but each one after that struck true and left the queen with arrows sticking from her eye, neck and chest. She coughs up some blood and points to him.

"That one dies first!"

Tygora Fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

Tygora winces with pain at the scream, already suffering from so many wounds, and looks with undisguised fear at Abram as he tears the drake apart, sending steaming blood in a gory spray.

It took 2 hits to kill the drake, which ended at -75HP

She ignores Martin and Enora, and flies toward Almaas....

This triggers from Martin, I need to roll as a hit will change her tactics...

Martin tail AoO: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 1 = 25
damage: 2d8 + 1 ⇒ (7, 8) + 1 = 16
Hits because of haste, and she had 14 HP left!

Martin's tail slams into Tygora's head as she tried to fly past, and she tumbles to the ground.

Falling damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Uktak, who had been about to hurl himself at Almaas as commanded, screams "NOOOOO" at seeing his queen felled, and immediately tries to protect her fallen form from the saurian menace. A sudden flash of magic washes over him and he seems imbued with divine power.

Uktak scimitar vs. Martin, PA, divine power: 1d20 + 16 - 3 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 16 - 3 + 3 = 24
Uktak scimitar vs. Martin, PA, divine power: 1d20 + 16 - 3 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 16 - 3 + 3 = 21
Uktak scimitar vs. Martin, PA, divine power: 1d20 + 11 - 3 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 11 - 3 + 3 = 18

However the deadly ifrit can't penetrate Martin's armor and he becomes increasingly frustrated, finally stepping toward his queen's fallen form protectively.

Well that went poorly for the enemy!

Almaas 5 steps and changes his bane ability to be able to harm the Ifrit and shoots arrows at the warrior.

Bane 5/13. Ignoring cover from one ally with deadeye bowman trait but there are two so the ifrit has cover. Using perfect strike feat on my literary attack.

Night of the Gray Death

Only Martin is providing cover (since you can measure from one of your top corners and draw a line to all four corners of Uktak's space that only pass through Martin). Zen archers (especially with bane) are ridiculous!

A flurry of perfectly aimed shots pierce the Mighty warrior, and he falls despite his wish-powered might.

He drops after the crit

In the aftermath, you can hear the sounds of battle continuing to rage outside, but it sounds like the oreads are overcoming the palace's defenders.

What do you want to do with your fallen enemies? Remember that Efreeti can grant wishes if they're so inclined, so Tygora could be an incredibly valuable resource

"I am really glad that she did not throw more fire bolts or another wall of fire on us. I would not have been able to see through that." Almaas says with a stern look on his face.

Almaas casts detect magic and takes all the dangerous items away from the enemies.

”So we now have to rescue our allies and somehow negotiate with Tygora. I really do not like the fact that we just invaded her castle and defeated her! We do not have any legitimate claim to her throne and although the people of this town need to rule themselves eventually, they essentially chose her as their queen!“ he says.

I may have to get some of those stegosaurian plates!
It looks like we are still in combat. If so Tsadoc will cast stabilize on the queen while moving nearer his wounded allies. If not he will stabilize queen, then Uktak, then cast a heal spell on Abraham, Crowe, etc..

"What the people chose was safety from the outside. What they got was tyranny. When they asked to remove oppression, she imprisoned their voice. She attacked us, when we brought their demands to her." It doesn't rhyme very well, but the metre of Tsadoc's speech sounds like a song one might hear between Saturday morning shows. Martin thumps his tail in accompaniment. "She imprisoned our friends as well, and evidence suggests their crime was nil.

EDIT: I just saw 'final report'. What was Uktak's -3 from? I thought Martin was a going the way of Tiger!

Night of the Gray Death

-3 was from power attack, I'd forgotten that on his first strike. He's pretty dangerous and has some cool powers from a wish to be the mightiest warrior in town (swift action divine power or cure serious, and the ability to reroll a save or skill-check with a +5 bonus). Almaas wasn't in town then luckily

You quickly stabilize the fallen enemies and look around the throne room. There are no signs of the captives, but there were several other rooms off the entrance hall.

Do you want to search for the captives first, or talk to Tygora? She'd need healing up to talk to her. Uktak has a lot of gear you can relieve him of, magic armor, shield, scmitar cloak etc but the details aren't important

"We should take away their weapons and armor just so they're a little more ... compliant ... when we talk with them."

Enora will also search them for snacks. Haste really works up an appetite.

Let's heal up (Enora has zero capabilities :(), then talk with Tygora (she may tell us about the layout and any other dangers lurking), and then search ourselves (maybe with Tygora leading the way).

Night of the Gray Death

Crowe offers up his wand of cure light wounds to help restore people back to health, and to bring Tygora round once properly bound. Tsadoc uses the wand and Abram and Crowe can bind Tygora securely before Tsadoc brings her round.

When roused, she attempts to be regal in defeat.

"You have proven yourselves worthy by besting me. Release me and I will grant your group three wishes, anything your heart's desire. Fear not, I will leave this wretched place, I tire of the ungrateful swine"

If you would like to agree to her offer, you can elect anyone in the group to make the wishes (or split them up), just say what you want, and make an intelligence of Wisdom check to reflect how carefully you worded it. 3 such checks are required, and we'll see how they turn out!

Night of the Gray Death

Mechanics wise everyone gets the benefit of the wishes in the form of a pretty great boon, provided you can pass the checks. Flavour wise it depends what's wished for

She nods at Almaas' words, clearly thinking about some way to twist his request, but eventually she sighs, and nods emphatically before announcing.

"Granted"

You don't see any obvious changes, but the sounds of fighting outside are suddenly gone, and cheers of oreads shouting "Victory!" reach you through the walls.

That's one success, would anyone else care to try?

Enora has +5 INT and -1 WIS, so unless this roll is aid-able, she'll just stand there quietly and daydream.

Aid WIS, if allowed:
Aid: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13

Night of the Gray Death

Two successes! Aid is very much allowed.

Enora interjects a few corrections on Almaas's phrasing as he's speaking, and when Tygora says "Granted" you all feel imbued with a certain feeling of power.

That's enough to get the boon which comes with a few options, but one of them is a +6 inherent bonus to one ability score for 5 minutes, which kind of amazing! The other options are 2 prestige points or a few hundred gold which seem much less exciting to me.One wish left which is entirely for flavour if anyone wants to make one.

Night of the Gray Death

With the last wish made, Tygora smiles. "Granted. Lamb chops and chutney for everyone in town. Good luck finding them. Muhahaha!"

With her petty revenge, she laughs and promptly disappears, fading away in front of you to who knows where.

Looking around the palace you quickly encounter a small variety of rooms, including a warren for the flame drake and opulent baths. The only set of rooms within walking distance of the entrance is blocked by an imposing set of doors that are locked. The keys can be found after a search of the throne room, and upon opening it you are greeted to the sight of a small prison. Four pathfinders as well as one oread are here in poor health. They are beaten and tortured, but alive and greatly relieved to see you. Liberating them is easy enough, and upon leaving the palace you are greeted to an army of oreads just outside the gates. Cheers go up as they take in the sight of you all alive, and with your companions and Ghaleri the councillor as well.

You are escorted back to Crystalcrag by an honourguard, and invited to participate in celebrations. The traditionally stoic oread demeanour is well and truly broken by the catharsis of hundreds of years of oppression being lifted. Valsog talks your ears off about the work he means to do for the town, and Eurdan and Ghaleri give rousing speeches about the future of town. Word is that a rich vein of skymetal ore has been spotted in the nearby hills, suggesting a lucrative mine might be in the Crystalcrags future, and there is no shortage of locals who would jump at the chance to work to improve their lot.

You are treated as royalty, and then given ample provisions for your return journey, and told to return whenever you wish.

That's the end of the scenario! Sorry for the mix-up with the tiers . There's a few success conditions to go over:

The primary success condition was to rescue at least 2 of the three missing pathfinders and return them to Katheer. This is much more difficult if you fight your way to the throne room because they get moved from the prison and are placed onto exploding traps which can kill them. Talking your way in helps very much for that goal

The secondary success condition was to recuse all three agents, so success there too. If you had made a deal with Tygora you automatically lose the second prestige

Tsadoc: As a representitive of liberty's edge you get the chance at earning an extra boon, you needed to accomplish 2 of the following 3 goals: 1)Earn Eurdan's support 2)Rally the Oreads at the Tavern 3)Defeat Tygora. You got them all so you get the Crystalcrag liberator boon (a one time boon to give a +10 foot speed bonus, +3 dodge bonus against AoOs and +2 morale bonus on combat manuevers, +3 resistance bonus on saves for one encounter that features hostages or captives). It doesn't look like we had any Silver Crusade members

Well done everyone! I hope you had fun. I'll make the chronicles shortly, let me know if you want to record anything like gold spent or purchases or stuff like that, otherwise I'll leave those fields blank

@Letsuna: You participated in almost all of the scenario, just missing the last encounter. If you return I can make you a chronicle, I just need to know which character number to apply it to

Night of the Gray Death

The lamb chops are nowhere to be found as Enora searches the town and Tsadoc takes to the skies, and they have to eventually settle for the many and varied local dishes available in Crystalcrag, defeated by a crafty genie.

The final scene of the adventure takes place in a faraway place. A city built into an enormous canyon in a dusty red landscape. Three miles deep the canyon stretches, and thousands of dwellings are built into the walls and the floor. Deep into one of those wall warrens, down twisting tunnels far from the dim light of the distant sun lives a ysoki brood who make their way scavenging and bartering. The tight confines of their common area somehow manage to accommodate dozens of ysoki comfortably, all of whom jump with a start when an excited young ysoki bursts in.

"Quick, something's happened! A find! Meat for the taking just appeared in the cavern, cooked and everything, so much of it. We needs to move quickly, there's enough food for a year, the bounty of Grandmother Rat"

The industrious ratfolk make quick work of collecting the miraculous bounty, but each and every one complains about the nasty sauce.
