You are each given a missive from Urwal, the leader of the Verdant Wheel faction within the Pathfinder Society.

Three months ago, the Green passed briefly beside the Stranger, the two in confluence for a half-turning of a moon. In Finadar’s heart, the spirits run riot. Flesh and flower flow together, and bones walk on limbs of wood. Soon, the Child shall pass beneath the aegis of the Mother. The time is auspicious for the Pathfinders to fix what was broken. Journey to Iobarian Mishkar. At the caravansary beneath, amid the stalls, you will find Jaldan, a shaman of Redpine. She will wait for you there until the moon turns once more. Do not dally. Also in slides

Before we start, feel free to role play and introduce yourselves on the journey to Mishkar.

Sky shows up early to the group and waits for the others to arrive, patiently meditating and reciting passages from the Hymns to the Wind and Waves. The dark skinned monk comes from the swamp lands of the Mwangi Expanse where he briefly attended the Magaambya Academy before dropping out to pursue his true calling.

He dresses and looks like most typical monks would, with his loose clothing and his magical handwraps, but at first glance you would immediately be curious about the wooden mask he wears. When asked about it he will explain that he is training to be a Magic Warrior, ancient defenders that originated from the Mwangi Expanse. His wooden mask resembles features of a shark, with a wide sharp toothed grin and small eye holes that you can see his dark brown eyes through. He also explains that he has taken an oath when he put on his mask and he cannot share his true name or show his face, or else he would lose the gifts that he gained upon taking his oath.

He also talks about his devotion to Gozreh, the god of the skies and seas, and how he believes that Gozreh has sent him on the path to become one of his mightiest warriors. He lives next to the sea near the Eye of Abendego and lets the wind guide him to adventure, usually with the Pathfinder Society. He greets everyone that arrives and shares his stories with anyone curious to ask, but otherwise stays pretty silent, preferring to listen to the wind for signs from his deity. His real name must remain a mystery but he has chosen to take the name Sky Shark for now to make it easier to address him, usually by the shortened name, Sky.

Male Half-Orc Wizard 2 | HP 22 | AC 16 | F:5, R:6, W:7 | Perc: +5 (Darkvision)

Thurk comes later, excusing his tardiness citing the busy times of the exam season at the Arcanamirium. He is soft-spoken for a half-orc and neatly groomed, not giving the impression of someone used to the hardships of being a Pathfinder. And yet there is resolve in his gaze for he knows that he has not been summoned to lead the charge but to protect those who will, and he is prepared to do just that.

He respectfully inquires about the Sky Shark's mask and listens with interest. He remarks that it is a curious sign of the times that ancient magical traditions from New Thassilon to the Mwangi Expanse have returned to the wider world after millenia of confinement to the history books or closely guarded circles.

A goblin approaches, hunched over almost to the point of allowing his hands to touch the ground without effort. He wears a strange set of hide armor that looks more reptilian than your usual treated skin, and a large club is strapped onto his back. Oddly, he seems to have some kind of doll with a pointed beak tucked into his belt.

His large eyes scan over the others with a hunter's instinct, and his mouth opens and closes slightly, repeatedly. Finally, he speaks, "Hi!" He point a thumb at his own chest, declaring, "Toadlicker, of Licktoad tribe." Then he points down at the doll. "Buggie." He takes a little more time to look at Sky, and especially his mask. After another moment, he inquires, "Fishy?"

Spying the other pathfinders gathered together, he approaches them and introduces himself in a deep, whispery voice.
"Barrek Half-Dead," he says, then by way of explanation, moves one hand in a quick arc, where it leaves ghostly after-images in its wake. Grinning, he adds, "Never trust a monk to raise someone from the dead, especially with 'borrowed' components."
He produces a pipe, lights it, then takes a long inhale from it and says as he exhales, "Soo, Mishkar. Never been there before myself. Anyone else?"

Travelling along well used road, rutted with cart wheels after the recent rains, you are soon to be arriving at your destination, Mishkar . There to rendezvous with Jaldan the shaman.

Toad Licker remembers from his faction training many interesting things, that he happily shares with you, including, after a great deal of head scratching that Urwal is one of the newest leaders of the Pathfinder Society, an Iruxi (lizardfolk) Stargazer who simply showed up at the Grand Lodge one day about a year ago. After making himself at home in the Lodge, he went about correcting labels on Mwangi artifacts, sorting insect collections, and painting murals of the night sky as seen from central Garund. He's considered odd, even by the flexible standards of the Pathfinders, but he's clearly committed to the Pathfinder cause, and he and his supporters, Toad Licker takes a bow, have proven their worth where the preservation of nature is concerned.

Thurk explains to you all that in his studies of the history of the Society, that the Pathfinder Society was involved in a major operation in Finadar Forest within the last year, 4718 AR. An ancient cyclopean ritual was accidentally triggered by a group of goblins living in the dragon's graveyard, causing a massive fire. With the help from the Pathfinders, the local centaurs and druids managed to stop the fire, and since then have been working on the forest's recovery. The goblins in question have since emigrated west.

Recall knowledge checks made before arriving at Mishkar, and therefore before slotting boons or leaving the ability to purchase items behind:

Occultism. - to interpret Urwal's peculiar comments
Nature. - understand some of Urwal's references to spirits and primal worship.
Society. - to know more about Findar Forest.

Sky:

Findar Forest is a mainly deciduous forest, with lovely flora and fauna.

Toad Licker:

Forest's are often tended to by druids, who have very strange ways. Even goblin druids back in your tribe wear strange natural clothes with patterns of leaves and squirrels, really weird.

Barrek:

There is meaning in the disposition of the heavens, the stars above have .... oh what was it!

Thurk:

You remember as a boy that one night you looked to the stars and thought there was a meaning to the universe. If only you had listened more at school, perhaps you would understand their meaning.

Milton:

Occultism: When you study Urwal's message you interpret the Green is the planet of Castrovel, associated with fertility, while the Stranger is one of the constellations of the Cosmic Caravan, associated with ill magic and typically depicted as a single, staring eye. The Child is another name for Golarion, while the Mother is another of the Cosmic Caravan, associated with protection.

Society: In the libraries of learning you remember reading that Finadar Forest, in western Iobaria, is mostly known for its bruorsivi (or blood pines), a species of pine tree with scarlet needles that burns remarkably well and sparks small wildfires as part of its life cycle. While Finadar’s blood pines make the forest highly susceptible to sudden and intense forest fires, the many druids and centaur shamans who reside there typically keep these fires from growing out of control.
A few obscure legends hint that the blood pines of Finadar were carefully cultivated in a past age by cyclops conjurers, who used the trees as fuel in rituals to summon immense beings of elemental fire.

After a few more hours, with the sun getting to it's zenith, you arrive at Mishkar. Sprawling on a hilltop overlooking a broad caravansary, the town of Mishkar is an eclectic mix of steeply pitched Varisian houses interspersed with the occasional red-tiled Taldan roof. The scars of the recent fires are still visible if one cares to look, seen in the town’s smoke-darkened rooftops and sooted doorways. As you walk through you mostly see evidence of new construction and repairs both finished and in progress; it seems that Mishkar is decidedly in favor of putting the past behind it. Today, it is a city of paint buckets and ladders, of carpenters and surveyors and masons, smelling of sawdust and sounding of workers’ cries

The caravansary at the foot of the hill is equally bustling. A large caravan of merchants from Brevoy has just arrived, and the building’s yard is crowded with clerks and guards, horses and grooms, with curious children darting between the wagon wheels. Just about everyone seems to be at the caravansary today, you don't see Jaldan, even though you were told she would be waiting for you here until the moon turns once more and the moon has not turned.

What do you do....

You overhear some merchants talking about the Redpine tribe centaur's and how they do their best to protect the forests which definitely makes travel easier. You decide togo looking and find a centaur girl.

Perception DC=15:

You wander around Mishkar, looking for a centaur girl, eventually seeing her just outside the east walls.

Whilst queueing for some flatbreads and cheese, you overhear some people discussing the Redpine centaur tribe in the Findar Forest and a young female centaur was seen earlier today by the ornate fountain of The Old Faith. You decide to go there and try to follow any tracks of unshod hoofprints.

Survival DC=20:

You follow the footprints outside the east wall.

All read on one characters success above:

Just past the east wall of Miskhar is the peculiar sight of a freckled, teenaged centaur yelling at an apple tree. Upon closer inspection, it is clear that she is actually yelling at a pair of human children who have climbed the tree: a boy and a girl, each about ten years old, with matching red hair and homespun clothes. The girl nonchalantly eats an apple while the boy rifles through a decorated leather satchel.

“You little demons, give that back!” the centaur yells, flicking her tail in profound irritation.

“Hmm. Nope,” the girl in the tree says, munching on the apple.

“Not until you show us how to make those dead squirrel monsters!” the boy calls down.

“Sure, I’ll show you! Come on down, I’ll make two dead monsters! Little devils, with red hair!” the centaur yells, then spots your approach. “... Oh no. You’re… did Urwal send you? Oh no. Um. Can you just... I’m sorry, could you come back in a half hour? .. Please?”

Decide if you are negotiating, diplomatic or intimidating to the children and roll accordingly, or another way with appropriate rolls to retrieve the bag...... Milton has help!!!

With Toad Licker eating the apple thrown at him, as he keeps showing off and talking to his strange doll, a barrage of apple cores are sent at him from Linnet, the girl. "Why talk to that doll, it not like the scarecrow, it doesn't walk."

Apples come flying straight at Vinny as she blows her raspberry, "You no good, you can't make squirrel monsters, we read book." comes the taunt from the children.

Howvever when Milton makes a small bird, that is obviously either dead or stuffed, one wing at a strange angle, the body, bulging in the wrong places, with stiches showing. Alayn looks up and shouts, "See, that's like one of them squrrel monsters, cept it's flying. Cor that's really good!" Linnet stares across and is engrossed by the image of the flying mammal.

Jaldan nods feverishly at Vinny's suggestion she keep a tight hold of the bag when it is returned.

Milton whistles, and his bird familiar flutters off the branch and lands on Milton's outstreched hand.

"Come down children, and I will show you my friend. I think you will find him quite interesting."

"Buggie walks when needs to! Also calls more buggies for me to eat! SEE?!" His temper getting away from him a bit, he doesn't think when he grabs the doll from his belt and starts to make it walk with his hands.

The children watch Toad Licker as he talks to his buggie, but they quickly get bored with the goblins antics, even to the extent they stop throwing apples and apple cores at him.

However Milton catches their attention with a whistle, as he calls his strange bird back to his hand. The children seem enraptured by this strange thing. And when asked to come down, Linnet screams in excitement, "Alayn, quick, get down, let's see that bird. It's better than them squirrels, it flies an everything!" Both children clamber down from the trees and head straight to Milton, who in exchange for stroking his bird, retrieves Jaldan's satchel.

The alchemist is able to keep the children entertained with both the bird and telling alchemy stories, until echoing through the woods you hear a woman's voice. "Alayn, Linnet....time to come home now .... time for a drink....hurry up, I don't want to get your father here!" Hearing this the children, look up at Milton both in awe and a little bit nervous about the man's strange abilities. "Thank you for a nice time, we gotta go." they both say in unison. With that the two young scamps run off back towards the East Gate.

Jaldan spends a few minutes sorting out her pack, making sure that the children haven’t stolen or broken anything inside. Finally, she relaxes, closing the pack and with relief, “I might actually survive.” The centaur says. “Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!! You just saved my hooves. Uh... when we get back to camp, could you maybe, uh... not mention this to anyone. Please?”

Once you have all given your assurances, Jaldan escorts you back tothe city of Mishkar. On the journey back she starts to rely to you a story.

“So, here’s the story. Over the last few months, something really weird has happened to the local forest spirits. They’ve always been a little cranky, but now they’ve gone from ‘Auntie Kaana before she has her morning tea’ to ‘We will bake bread from your bones’. They’re not talking to the druids or the shamans, and when Cenenviel tried to do a big ritual to ask them what’s wrong, a tree animated and tried to kill him."

“So that’s bad. Worse, the spirits have started making bodies for themselves. You know leshys, right? Well, normally, only druids can make one. They grow a little plant or mushroom body, nicely ask a spirit to come inside, and poof, leshy. Except now the spirits are making their own bodies, and they’re really creepy, and also violent. I had to smash something that looked like a dead skunk crossed with a thornbush when it tried to eat my face last night.

“These things have been attacking people, starting fires, and trying to burn down the forest. I don’t think anyone’s gotten killed yet, but it’s probably going to happen sooner rather than later.

“Anyway, that’s what Cenenviel, Kaana, and your Urwal are trying to figure out now at the Redpine camp. They seem to think you can help. So! Get your stuff and lets get going!”

Arriving back in at the East Gate, Jaldan gives you 5gps, a lesser cheetah’s elixir, and an owlbear claw and enough time to complete any shopping in the caravanserai. She tells you it will take about a day to get to the Redpines camp, concluding with "There's plenty of time to talk on the journey" and a large smile.

Also boons etc, see discussion and recruitment threads.

Owlbear Claw should be affixed to someone's weapon ASAP. Could add it to my club, but I mostly use unarmed attacks (pretty sure you can't use it for those). Not sure if we have another option.

Toadlicker seems satisfied with himself, as if he'd been a big help with the troublesome children. He listens to Jaldan, though keeps his distance from her hooves. He tilts his head, seemingly like a dog or other animal, trying to decipher what she says. When she's done, he pipes up, "Evil plants? Not as good as buggies, but still some tasty treats. Let's go!"

Vigilant Seal

"Of course Jaldan. There is no need to mention this incident."

Milton does some shopping, finishing outfitting himself before travel.

I think I have all his initial gear listed on his character sheet now.

Vinny browses around the caravansery, looking at all the wares for sale. In the end she isn't sure what sorts of things would really help in a fight against violent forest spirits more than her firebombs, so she doesn't wind up buying anything. Reuniting with the rest of the group, she says "Well, I think I'm about as ready as I'm going to be! Shall we head out?"

"Self-creating leshy, that definitely cannot be good." the monk quietly travels with the group in his minimalistic attire and waits patiently while the others gather materials for the adventure. He spends the time meditating and listening to the winds for any signs from his deity, ready to leave when the party is prepared.

With everyone ready, Jaldan and the group start off for the Redpine camp. The early forest flora and fauna seems quite pleasant, birds singing or trilling, flowers blooming in the sun, foxgloves, marigolds and a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees. Jaldan asks you about your previous adventures and gives you that chance to ask her any more questions you have about her invitation to adventure. Jaldan herself spots several medicinal herbs that she points out, although the leaves aren't quite big enough to harvest yet.

"I would have expected the leshys to be happy about the fact that they started procreating, not angry... Some foul play must be going on."

Along the way, Thurk tells Jaldan about his first adventure with the Pathfinders that brought him to a huge city out of time in New Thassilon, which was marvelous in its own right but completely devoid of the bucolic nature that seems to be enveloping them now. At least he got to befriend a real stone giant!

"So this Cenenviel - is he the one who is teaching you to become the shaman? Or is it Kaana? Do they have any ideas about what's going on here yet?"

Vinny walks with the group, pointing out various flowers she sees as she goes along. "My family is big into flowers, we have a shop, we make all kinds of lovely things. If you're in Absalom and you need flowers, we've got you covered! I do love seeing wildflowers though, not many of those in a florist's shop."

She also describes her last journey with the pathfinder society, a harrowing trek through the mountains that culminated in fighting an ogre. "He was so big, and not very flammable. We got him in the end though!"

Vigilant Seal

"I am still new to the society, but I hope to have a long and prosperous career here." As the group walks, Milton takes out his familiar. "Go my friend, and watch over us. Return if you see danger approaching."
