The Battle of Bloodmarch Hill
Mysteries in Sylbaran

In the town of Sylbaran an out-of-the-way settlement surrounded by the brutal monsters of the country of Droaam to the south and the undead-infested forests of the Gloaming to the north, the heroes must investigate a mysterious attack on a diplomatic envoy. Can they uncover the truth before Sylbaran comes under attack by forces working against it, and will they stop a dangerous plot—and discover that the situation is worse than anyone realizes. For even the fearsome raid is just a distraction allowing a menacing force to recover the relics of an ancient giant hero from a tomb long forgotten beneath the town.

This is my telling of the Giantslayer Adventure Path by Paizo, set in the Eberron Campaign Setting, created by Keith Baker. I hope you enjoy it.

With her easy target of Valeros's leg gone, Jacynta slips through the mist to Thuurvi's side.

"I think Tuk is otherwise engaged," she says, peeking around the corner through the edge of the mist at Ezren. "You've been fighting the wizard alone this whole time?"

She still has actions left, but Jacynta will end her turn here, in cover and talking to Thuurvi.

"Ezren!" Valeros yells from the ground.

Ezren concentrates on his wand in his left hand for a moment, and then yells, "যাদু মিসাইল!"

His eyes go wide as a bundle of barbwire quickly pours out of the end of the wand onto the ground. Woven in amongst the barbwire are 5 sharpened bones. "Ah! Backfire!"

Thuurvi:
You recognize the 5 sharpened bones on the barbwire to be a strange representation of the Devourer, one of the Dark Six, generally considered to be a god of evil.

The magic word sounds like Yādu misā'ila.

Crunch:
Ezren attempts to Maximize his wand of Magic Missile as a Swift Action, costing 9 charges from the wand (25 remaining) with a Spellcraft DC of 20. He uses the wand as a Standard Action. Ezren Spellcraft to Maximize wand of Magic Missile: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10, and Fumbles. Scroll mishap 1d7 ⇒ 6. 1d4 ⇒ 2 random items appear: 1d250 ⇒ 124 a bundle of barbwire and 1d250 ⇒ 144 prayer beads to the devoured (5 sharpened bones). Thuurvi intelligence check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 vs. DC 10 to recognize a symbol of the Devourer.

Lashing out from the ground, Valeros catches Engineer #3 Mk. II in the legs with his longsword. "Screw your backfire! Get over here, now!" Valeros yells, lurching to his feet, Engineer #3 Mk. II swipes at his face, almost hitting him in the eyes.

Engineer #3 Mk. II takes 11 points of non-lethal damage. Engineer #3 Mk. II gets an AoO and Dazzles Valeros. Tuk does not get an AoO as he is not armed and does not threaten.

Crunch:
Valeros, using Combat Expertise from prone, attacks Engineer #3 Mk. II; Enlarged, Bane, prone: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 NATURAL 20! Automatic hit, critical threat confirmation: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, no critical, for 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 4) + 5 = 11 potential points of non-lethal damage vs. Engineer #3 Mk. II's Defense Environmental: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23. Engineer #3 Mk. II takes 11 points of non-lethal damage. As a Move Action, Valeros stands up from prone, triggering an AoO from Engineer #3 Mk. II., Tuk is not armed, so does not threaten. Engineer #3 Mk. II's AoO Dazzled; Bless: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 6 + 1 = 21 vs. Valeros's Defense; prone: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 7 - 4 = 6. Valeros stands up, but is Dazzled for 4 rounds. A Move Action will clear that condition.

END OF ROUND 4!

Summary of conditions:

  • EVERYONE is under the effects of Thuurvi's Bless spell for 6 more rounds, and there is a mist in the room that provides Concealment (20%) for anyone in it.
  • Jacynta is concealed and hidden.
  • Thuurvi is concealed.
  • Tuk is looking for his rapier.
  • Engineer #3 Mk. II just took a shot across the shins from Valeros.
  • Valeros is large and Dazzled.
  • Ezren has backfired his wand!
  • Thalmor is wiping up spilled beer from his notebook.

    ROUND 5!

    DM:
Ezren and Valeros are under the effects of Bane for 9 more rounds. Ezren has a Shield for 7 more rounds. Valeros is Enlarged for another 16 rounds. Valeros is Dazzled for 4 rounds, but may clear the condition as a Move Action.

"Hey Ezren! You know the Devourer likes to eat pinkskins like you who delve into His magic, right? It starts at night, with bad dreams and itching," taunts Thuurvi.

She heads towards him, dagger in hand.

    Crunch:

    ok, now we'll try Intimidate.

    Intimidate: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16, and his saves against fear effects are lessened by 1 due to Bane.

    Round 5

Tuk glances in the direction his rapier went flying, then shrugs and draws his dagger, then moves up closer to engage with Valeros once again.

Smiling, he taunts the enlarged man, "That bigger and better spell didn't seem to do much for ya down in th' basement!"

He leaps in, slashing with his dagger...

    Crunch:

Draw dagger as a free action.
    Attack, Bless: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 1 = 22
    Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

If attacked by Valeros and is missed, Tuk will use another panache to initiate another Underfoot Assault. Can't resist! :)

"The Devourer take this - confounded...I can't get there, Valeros!" Ezren looks between his cane and his wand as if trying to make a choice.

Ezren looks a little shook up, Thuurvi.

    Thuurvi:
Yeah, you may have. You posted that you didn't feel you could move or do a Standard Action and that you said something to Tuk, and then asked a question that I answered. I assumed if you were going to act you would have. Sorry, mate.

    Crunch:
    Ezren's save vs. Thuurvi's Demoralization +16: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13. Ezren becomes Shaken for 1 round.

"This warforged hits like a blacksmith!" Valeros yells back to Ezren, just as Tuk stabs him in the knee, "Ow! And this halfling can't seem to hit anything!"

Tuk, why is the draw dagger a Free Action? You didn't actually move, so it wasn't part of a Move Action. It doesn't matter, as you had a Move Action and it doesn't provoke, but I was just curious.
Also, Tuk hits Valeros and does 6 points of non-lethal damage.

    Crunch:
    Valeros's Defense SUNDER TUK'S DAGGER; Enlarged, Dazzled, Bane vs. Tuk's attack +22: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15, Tuk hits Valeros for 6 points of non-lethal damage.

Engineer swings again with his mind blade, the oversized ecroplasmic battlefist turning his already large hand into a veritable battering ram.

    Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 1 = 20 to

"What is it you warforged say in times like this? I forget..." Valeros smirks as he catches Engineer #3 Mk. II's attack on his sword and pivots the blade, stepping up and smashing the pommel into Engineer #3 Mk. II's eyes, blinding him, "...oh that's right. F#@k off!"

Engineer #3 Mk. II, Valeros gouges you in the eyes. (Turns out that is a thing you can do to warforged.) You are Blinded for 1 round.

    Crunch:
Valeros's Defense EYE GOUGE; Bane, Enlarged, Dazzled vs. Engineer #3 Mk. II's +20: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21. Valeros gouges Engineer #3 Mk. II's eyes. Jacynta darts around the corner after Thuurvi, dagger flashing as she lunges for the old man.

    DM:
Move again to get into position, standard action to attack

Edit: Well, this should be fun.

    Jacynta Dagger: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
    damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

As Jacynta comes rushing around the corner, Ezren knocks over a Rundlet of wine that was standing against the wall. She trips over the barrel, banging her knees and her shins, and stopping her in her tracks as the barrel bursts, and a deep red wine ruptures all over the compartment's floor. The air reeks of alcohol...with notes of cherries and plum.

"Ah! I thought that might be flour! Not good wine!"

Ezren impedes your movement by 20 ft./ round with his Reaction (bringing your movement to 0 ft.) This lasts until the end of your next turn.

    Crunch:
    Ezren's Defense; Mage armor, Shield, Bane, Shaken vs. Jacynta's attack +8: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24. Jacynta's movement is impeded by 20 ft. per round. Jacynta Intelligence check to know what a Rundlet is: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 vs. DC 18.

"Enough!" Ezren shouts, pointing the wand at Thuurvi. A white-hot point of light shoots out, hitting her.

Ezren nimbly moves around Jacynta and the broken barrel of wine spilling everywhere. "Valeros! I'm a fool! I spilled wine!" He narrowly avoids getting tripped up with a bit of the barrel shoved in front of him as Thuurvi kicks it in his way. He ducks under a plank of wood Jacynta flings at the side of his head before he disappears into the mist.

    Thuurvi:
Ezren leaves the door before darting to the left, towards where you started the combat. (He is hidden to Jacynta).

Thuurvi takes 4 points of non-lethal force damage.

    Jacynta:
Jacynta is unaware of where Ezren went. Clearly you can see his token on the map, but she does not know he went left after going through the door.

    Thalmor:
Suddenly Ezren bursts out of the mist, putting his finger to his lips in a shushing motion.

    Crunch:
    Ezren uses his wand of Magic Missile, aiming at Thuurvi for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 points of non-lethal force damage. Ezren nimbly moves around Jacynta and past Thuurvi provoking an AoO from Thuurvi, and then one from Jacynta. Thuurvi's AoO ENTANGLED; flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6 vs. Ezren's Defense: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14, missing. Jacynta's AoO DEAFENED: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 vs. Ezren's Defense: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14, missing.

    Thuurvi's Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12 vs. DC 4.

    Jacynta's Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 vs. DC 16.

"Dammit, Ezren! Come on! Again?" Valeros clears his head with a shake, then swings as if he is trying to knock Tuk over with the force of it, hitting the halfling with his longsword with devastating force before stepping back into the corner behind Engineer #3 Mk. II.

Valeros hits Tuk for 12 points of non-lethal damage.

    Crunch:
    Valeros removes his Dazzled condition as a Move Action. He uses Combat Expertise, with a Stamina point, and Power Attack. Valeros power attacks Tuk; Enlarged, Bane, : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 vs. Tuk's Defense IMPEDE MOVEMENT; Bless: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 for 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (4, 1) + 7 = 12 points of non-lethal damage. Valeros takes a 5 ft. step.

    END OF ROUND 5!

    Summary of conditions:

  • EVERYONE is under the effects of Thuurvi's Bless spell for 5 more rounds, and there is a mist in the room that provides Concealment (20%) for anyone in it.
  • Jacynta has no movement speed and missed an AoO.
  • Thuurvi missed an AoO. She may remove the penalty to movement with a Move Action.
  • Tuk is very low on hp.
  • Engineer #3 Mk. II is Blinded.
  • Valeros is large.
  • Ezren is still Shaken!
  • Thalmor was just interrupted.

Thuurvi grimaces and takes a moment to slap away the numbing force missiles. She peers over at Ezren, noting he's a bit hard to see around the corner, and instead mutters under her breath, whispering to the spirits that surround her.

"Jacynta, we should invest in a net--these wizards are slippery than alchemical hogs," quips Thuurvi.

    GM:

He's got cover against Telekinetic Projectile, so Thuurvi will just set stuff on the table on fire with Spark. Ideally, things that will generate more smoke. Using a move action to unhinder her movement.

Jacynta eyes the mist with trepidation, adjusting her grip on her dagger. "Did you see which way he went?" she asks Thuurvi, scanning the obscured common room.

Jacynta didn't see which direction Ezren went once he entered the fog. Free action to talk, if she doesn't get clear direction on pursuing him then she'll head towards the more obvious clamor of the brawl with Valeros.

Several napkins left on the table start to smolder, then light on fire, trails of smoke wafting up into Thalmor's face.

    Jacynta:
Jacynta cautiously moves into the fog, and comes out the other side. Engineer #3 Mk. II stands to your right, with a giant Valeros beyond him. You see Tuk on the ground in the corner.

Jacynta will need to use a Move Action to remove her impeded movement from the last round (lol), so she can move 30 ft. this round.

Ezren scrambles onto the table, crosses it in two steps, and jumps to the counter behind Thalmor. His foot slips on the edge, and he crashes to the countertop, his momentum knocking dishes and other breakfast items to the ground before he falls off into the kitchen. Surrounded by pots, pans, plates, and broken crockery he yells, pointing his wand at the warforged. "যাদু মিসাইল!"

A bolt of light streak out of the tip of the wand, hitting Engineer #3 Mk. II, knocking him to the ground!

The word sounds like Yādu misā'ila. Engineer #3 Mk. II takes 5 points of non-lethal force damage and is knocked prone.

  • FOR EVERYONE. House Rule: Normally to crawl away is an AoO and to stand is an AoO. Both are Move Actions. You may Withdraw while crawling as a Standard Action. This does not provoke an AoO. You may then stand as a Move Action. You essentially spend time rather than getting hit to stand. Either option is available to you.

Not sure if you're intentionally tagging the wrong person, but I checked the map and that is definitely Jacynta that Thuurvi is standing next to, not Tuk. Tuk is the green hood down in the corner of that room. Did you mean for Thuurvi to incorrectly assume that Jacynta was Tuk?

As Ezren leaps onto the table and then crashes into the kitchen, he kicks the bits of fabric that are on fire into Thalmor's lap. Thalmor pushes back in his chair, but the leg catches, toppling the chair over. Beer flys into the air as Thalmor is deposited on the floor.

From the floor, Thalmor scowls back at Thuurvi, "now why would I need to be out and about fer any reason? Why would there be a real scrap?" He grumbles and stands up, wiping himself off, as he, obviously annoyed, stumbles away from the action to the corner, nursing a grievance. He looks over his shoulder, "yer business is yer own, I'm not a blasted nursemaid nor bodyguard!"

    DM:

Thalmor is trying to move as far away from this 'faux' fight as is possible.

DM Botting for Engineer #3 Mk. II.

Engineer #3 Mk. II heaves himself to his feet, and Valeros laughs, "Take this, 'forged!" He kicks Engineer #3 Mk. II squarely between the legs, a look of triumph on his face, before Engineer #3 Mk. II wipes it off his face with a punch.

Engineer #3 Mk. II had an AoO against him, for Sickened, which he is immune to. He hits Valeros for 11 points of non-lethal damage.

    Crunch:
    Engineer #3 Mk. II stands, provoking an AoO from Valeros. Valeros's AoO SICKENED: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15, however warforged are immune to Sickened. Engineer #3 Mk. II attacks Valeros; Bless: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 1 = 25 vs. Valeros's Defense; Enlarged: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9, hitting for 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 points of non-lethal damage.

    DM botting for Tuk.

Tuk stands and steps inside Valeros reach, and as Engioneer #3 Mk. II punches him in the face, he takes advantage of the moment to stab him in the thigh!

CRITICAL! Tuk does 3 points of non-lethal damage to Valeros and regains 1 Panache point.

    Crunch:
    Tuk stands, but does not provoke an AoO from Valeros as he already attacked Engineer #3 Mk. II with his this round. He takes a 5 ft. step and attacks Valeros with his dagger. Tuk's attacks; Bless: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25, critical confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 vs. Valeros's Defense SUNDER ARMOR; Enlarged: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 CRITICAL! For 2d3 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 points of non-lethal damage.

Jacynta gives Thuurvi a flat look. "What, all halflings look the same to you?"

She rolls her eyes and glances first at the enormous form of Valeros, then at Ezren struggling to get back to his feet. She nudges Three and says, "Have fun with the biggun," before darting at the wizard and slashing at him with her dagger.

    Crunch:

    Jacynta Dagger, plus Bless: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 1 = 21

Jacynta darts toward Ezren. "Halfling!" He yells, kicking a pan on the ground and launching it up in to the path of Jacynta. Jacynta's attack clangs out of the way. "Angry halfling!"

    Crunch:

    Spending my Standard action..

Thuurvi sighs at Jacynta, then gestures and mutters, and a fork whips toward Ezren from the galley.

    Crunch:

    Ranged, not touch, attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
    for: 1d6 ⇒ 5

A fork sails close to Ezren's ear, clattering against the cabinet over his shoulder. "Fork!"

    Crunch:
    Ezren's Defense; Mage Armor, Shield, prone vs. Thuurvi's attack +9: 1d20 + 10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 10 + 4 = 24.

Ezren scrambles to his feet, stepping out of the way of a swat from Jacynta. He levels his wand at her, "ভারক্লাকড ম্যাজিক মিসাইল!" Two balls of light streak out, hitting her in the chest!

Jacynta takes 5 points of non-lethal force damage. She also recognizes that the wand, a little over a foot in length with intricate carvings all over its surface, is made out of common Vinewood and another wood in the handle of the wand.
The words sound like Ōbhāraklākaḍa myājika misā'ila.

    Crunch:
    Ezren stands, provoking an AoO from Jacynta. Jacynta's AoO DEAFENED: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 vs. Ezren's Defense; Mage Armor, Shield, prone: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 10 - 4 = 26. Jacynta notices that the wand is made up of a vine wood body.

"Stay down!" Valeros yells, cutting Tuk across the halflings' right shoulder.

"Get'im, Three!" The audience watching what they can of the battle royale cheers as the Ezren crashes through the kitchenware and Valeros is surrounded. "Thuurvi's gonna murder Ezren! I'm so excited!"

Valeros hits Tuk for 14 points of non-lethal damage. I believe you have 3 hp remaining. Once they are gone we get into your Wound Points.

    Crunch:
    Valeros's attack; Enlarged, Bane: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 vs. Defense: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18, hitting for 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 6) + 5 = 14 points of non-lethal damage.

Engineer #3 swings again at the large fighter, hoping for a gut punch to take the wind out of him.
