Taariik’ |
“Wow! That was close! Let’s get some boards and build a bridge across!“ he says and circles back to the building to get something adequate.
GM Pudding |
There are a number of wooden bookshelves that are easy enough to remove and use as planks to cross the gap, and with 2 or 3 down Taariik feels confident to walk over them. The sturdy wooden door on the other side however is locked.
Huxwren |
Huxwren grins wickedly and skips past Taariik to get to work on the door.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 19 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 19 + 2 = 40
”Like taking gold from a drunkard.”
Grunyak |
Grunyak does not seem in any better a mood after the guards left. He does begrudging admit it was a good call.
"Now we have paper to back us up." "Until we don't I guess." "It doesn't stop a sword you know."
"Watch the way there, Taariik." "Darned thieves...should have known they would trap the place."
Grunyak waddles in after the Creepy Doll that is a they. "You know, I think you need a good exorcism."
GM Pudding |
Huxwren unlocks the door with contemptuous ease, and on opening they are greeted with a small room fifteen feet to a side, filled with the ill-gotten goods of the Brotherhood dealers. It contains sundry mundane valuables, as well as a few choice magical items. In amongst the sundries is a mummified imp's corpse paired with an oval frame.
There is a chain shirt with gleaming links that seem to form a pattern of roiling clouds:
A fine kukri:
A small talisman on a leather cord inscribed with depictions of predatory animals:
A small clay pot in the shape of a corpulent, lounging rat:
After going through the gear Huxwren finds no further items of interest or passages out.
Let me know if anyone wants to use any of those items (there's an unclaimed (I think) amulet of natural armour as well from Greeley that someone can probably use)
What do you do?
Grunyak |
Grunyak hands the natural armor amulet to Taariik, "Here, lad, I think this will help us not to have to heal you as much. Believe it or not, we kind of like having you around, you know."
He then gathers the magically registering stuff together and try to figure out what this stuff is. SC shirt, kukri, talisman, pot all with +4 to each roll not included: 4d20 ⇒ (10, 11, 7, 13) = 41
"Well, poppycock! I don't know what any of this magic stuff is or does." "Maybe I should brush up on my magic one of these days."
Eldrin Inarie |
After Grunyak finishes his examination, Eldrin collects the items together and returns to the room where their most recent battle took place. In what is coming to be almost a ritual he lays the items out on the ground and sits in front of them and begins his own careful examination.
Pulling the chain shirt into his lap, Eldrin runs one hand over the links and stairs at it intently for a few moments.
Spellcraft (DC: 18): 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 14 + 2 = 20
Looking over to whom ever is nearby he announces "This armour is enchanted to help conceal it's wearer a number of times per day".
Carefully picking up the kukri, Eldrin tests the blade with a finger nail.
Spellcraft (DC: 18): 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 14 + 2 = 20
After a few moments he lays it down saying "This blade has been magically enhanced very much like the weapons some of you carry.". He sets it aside and picks up the talisman.
Spellcraft (DC: 20): 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 14 + 2 = 36
Barely a second passes before he smiles, recognising the item immediately, "This talisman will warn of approaching danger. though the divination magic is not strong and it will likely fade as soon as it is triggered."
Finally he turns his attention to the pot.
Spellcraft (DC: 18): 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 14 + 2 = 29
"Hmm, this is an unusual item, it will allow the user to communicate with a rat."
He stands, dusts off his robe and gathers up the items. "Does anyone want to make use of any of these?"
Sorry for the delay in posting. I've been logged out for the last few days and didn't notice.
Grunyak |
"Eldrin, why don't you take the talisman? I like spells taking care of things before they become a problem. If you can eliminate danger before it can manifest, that is worth it."
Grunyak looks a little stumped. "I thought we would find a map to the Brotherhood lair or something. I am disappointed." "Well, should we follow the route through the walls like our rogue guard suggested?"
Taariik’ |
“Huxwren, you chose this new incarnation of yours wisely today!“ Taariik says with a grin.
He is puzzled after Eldrin makes all these discoveries.
“Wow! Great Eldrin! So what now?!“
GM Pudding |
Despite Magistrate Drune's suggestion that finding evidence that the Brotherhood had been poisoning the wells with shiver would be easy, Grunyak is rightly disappointed that the hideout contains only their ill-gotten gains. He suggests following the wall passage to this "House on Hook Street" where the shiver supply originates, so you set out to do so.
Awkwardly stepping over the filthy privy one-by-one, you try not to breathe through your nose as you step into the dark and cobweb filled tunnel gouged out of the massive city walls. You notice empty jars of discarded vermin repellent littered around the entrance. Despite the darkness Taariik and Grunyak can see an irregular tunnel carved out of the inside of the wall leading north and south.
I've put you on the map in a guess at marching order, the route to the house is down on the map, feel free to change your positions. It's dark in there. Taariik and Grunyak have darkvision, is a light cantrip from Eldrin sufficient light for the others? Would it be on an item carried by Drusilla? Any other preparations before going in?
Taariik’ |
Taariik just detects magic on the path and moves at the front.
Grunyak |
Grunyak casts light on a silver piece and hands it to Drusilla. "This aught to help some." "Kind of reminds me of the hill dwarf tunnels around Lastwall. Used to spend summers there helping out the local orphanage."
Grunyak is fine wherever in the order.
Taariik’ |
Taariik is clearly impressed.
"Grunyak my friend, you really have a good soul! Helping an orphanage!! Just great! So weak and so in need of support! Thanks for being like you are!" the Ifrit says and claps on the dwarf's shoulder with a broad smile.
GM Pudding |
Sorry Dru, that's not the first time I've forgotten your ioun torch, and it probably won't be the last!
Equipped with Grunyak's illuminated coin and Drusilla's ioun torch, there is plenty of light for the party to see by as you make your way cautiously down the irregular tunnel. The ceiling is usually around 20 feet high, though it dips here and there, and though thick webbing accumulates in the corners, it mostly doesn't block passage.
After having moved a few hundred feet, you spot a pair of blinking red eyes up ahead, then another, as huge spiders up ahead appear to have taken an interest in you. With bodies the size of horses and long spear-like legs all coiled around them it's hard to guess just how massive they'd be out in the open, but squashed up in the tunnel here they take up most of the space and are completely impassable. Worse, they look hungry, and move to attack!
There are two right on top of each other, one attached to the floor and the other right above it upside down on the ceiling

Eldrin can see 80 feet currently but the webbing prevented seeing them any further out. You're out of range for a melee attack or even a mind-arsenal, would you like to do something else?

The spider on the ground charges toward Drusilla, the narrow confines proving no obstace to its huge form as its long legs deftly squeeze in to avoid the walls.
The spiders have compression and do not need to squeeze
Red Spider Bite, charge: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 10 + 2 = 15

Blue fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Red fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
both spiders seem unfazed by Grunyak's blast, though the sonic energy does seem to have bent a few legs inwards and pushed in some chitinous armour.
Taariik calls on Irori to help him and performs an impressive spirit dance as he brings his sword down in a mighty blow - but the sky-metal sword merely scores a line down the spiders thick hide, failing to penetrate its armour that feels as strong as a thick oak door.
Even with the charge penalty to AC that's a miss I'm afraid
In response the monstrous spider makes a lightning quick strike toward Taariik, aiming low to avoid that sword.

Drusilla smashes the lower creature with her morningstar, a brutal hit that crunches the head of the massive spider. Its long legs shudder and it almost loses its footing, but it stays up and hisses in response, dodging out of the way of her second blow.
Confirmed crit, and extra damage due to the spirit dance!
Huxwren flings a well aimed dagger at the approaching upside-down spider, it sinks into its hide like another hair on its abdomen, and Taariik uses some ninja trickery to conjure some duplicates.
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Eldrin finishes studying his book for just the right spell, and produces a very effective fireball in the midst of the ground-hugging spider. It screeches and rears back, trying to get away from the flame
Adding to the barrage of attacks, Grunyak shoots an acid bolt at the top spider, but it pulls its whole body out of the way with its long legs, faster than you would have believed. Apparently annoyed at getting peppered from below, it moves along the ceiling, squeezing through the tight gap until it's right above Grunyak and Huxwren, and bites down at the source of its pinprick.
Bite vs. Huxwren: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Huxwren is much too fast for it though and they dodge out of the way of the gnashing spider-fangs.
The lower spider seems petrified of the fire, shifting its whole body sideways to perch onto the wall, and then climbing up until its out of the fire.
This provokes from Drusilla and Taariik
It then reaches out to bite at the monster that almost squished it with her morningstar!
Bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

GM Pudding |
Drusilla and Taariik both strike out as the spider tries to flee the flames, but it's Drusilla's strike that takes it out. It spasms as it dies, the large form blocking up the passageway. Spider body is difficult terrain

Huxwren steps back and tries to carefully cast a spell, but the large spider overhead is quite distracting and the magic fizzles.
5 ft step, Move action to focus (negating concentration penalty for Thought component), and try to cast long arm defensively.
Taariik’ |
GM, I don’t know if you’d allow (as my attack obviously missed) but I was thinking before already to use my spell like ability to cast enlarge person on Taariik. The attack roll of 8 could have been the concentration check to cast defensively for a 20 which would have succeeded. I want to tank here as with mirror image and the antitoxin I hope to get hit and not the others.
GM Pudding |
As Grunyak leaves himself momentarily open while concentrating on his cleric ability, the spider bites down, lightning fast.
Bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Grunyak's thick armour protects him though and he completes his casting and fires an acid bolt that strikes true and starts burning through the spider's hide. It screeches in rage.
I'm happy for you to redirect your action to an enlarge person Taariik, but I'd have you reroll for the concentration if you don't mind. Or given that it attacked Grunyak you could even chance not bothering; it's a bit metagamey but it could have taken 2 AoOs against Grunyak there if it had the ability to do so. Remember that it's a 1-round cast too, but spiders are vermin and not likely to understand what spellcasting is
Similarly Huxwren as it took an AoO just before your turn I don't mind if you'd prefer to go without the defensive cast, if you think that's what you would have done
Finally Eldrin for the flaming sphere (and pre-empting your question) I've been over the rules and I think I'd say that you can move it straight up (up to 30 feet), but that it will fall down at the end of its turn, so it needs a vacant space underneath the spider and a move action every round

Nah, Huxwren technically acts before Grunyak. And there’s not really a way of knowing whether the spider has Combat Reflexes - well, not without testing it, which could be hazardous to one’s health.
Eldrin Inarie |
Focusing on his ball of flame Eldrin flicks his hand toward the roof of the passage way causing the sphere to jump into the air toward the other spider.
Fire Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3) = 12
Targeting the square between Grunyak and Taariik, but on the ceiling.
GM Pudding |
Drusilla launches an arrow at the ceiling spider from close range. While it'd be virtually impossible to miss it at this range, the trick is getting enough power behind it to punch through its thick armour, a trick which Drusilla manages easily.
While normally you would take the -4 as it's threatening you, it doesn't apply in this case because it's at least 10 feet away from the nearest allied character
Taariik begins concentrating on some tricky magic, small motes of energy flicker into existence around his head as he thinks, but the spider appears to pay him no mind, focussed as it is on avoiding the terrifying ball of flame.
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
The little ball shoots up at the spider, but it was ready for it and moves its who torso out of the way lightning fast. In response it sends a little ball of web down at Drusilla who's arrow punctured it most recently.
