Raesilia Talbot |

Unaware of any danger, Rose mostly keeps watching the proceedings around her political idol. She glanced herself as around as often and natural as she felt comfortable doing, such as when the children in the area were making a ruckus or laughed at the nearby Jester's performances. There were still no concrete further instructions from Martella, after all, and whether they came through the badge or by other means remained to be seen...

Lotti Qeb |

Grateful as usual that her short stature encourages folks to look over her, Lotti hurries over to Marius. "Did you see that fellow going to feed the birds?" she whispers, pulling his arm to bring his ear closer so she doesn't have to speak any louder than necessary. "I'm worried about his substance - the color of his aura's all off today. Could you go check on him?"
Bluff to Pass Secret Message: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
"I'm worried about the substance he's carrying - it's brightly colored and looks dangerous."

Marius Erallan |

"I saw. I'll follow him," Marius gives Lotti a serious nod and straightens, giving his fellow conversationalist a beaming grin. "Hold that thought a moment, would you? The seeress says that I'm destined for a whiskey sour over yonder, and far be it from me to fight the whims of fate! Don't go anywhere..."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 Well he didn't have a name so hopefully I haven't created another nemesis for us :p
Marius weaves through the crowd as they all crane their necks to gawk at the Princess, tailing the servant as inconspicuously as possible. Frowning at the alchemical bar in the servant's hand, the nobleman retrieves a handkerchief from his breast pocket just in case he needs to snatch it from the other's grip.

Mirann Zalar |

Mirann bows and idly converses with admirers and politely refuses potential patrons, explaining her situation. At the Princess's speech she is openly moved, dabbing away tears before they have a chance to ruin her makeup.

GM Catullus |

The servant approaches the three wooden boxes that compose the small apiary. The buzzing of the bees intensifies and the insects seem increasingly agitated.

Marius Erallan |

As the alchemical bar's intended purpose clicks into place for Marius, he picks up his pace and hustles to the servant's side, handkerchief-wrapped hand darting out to snag it from the other's hands.
Steal Combat Maneuver: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Marius quickly slips the bar into his coat pocket, praying that it doesn't stain, stink up, burn, or explode. His other hand catches the servant by the arm as he stares intently at the other fellow's face to make sure he new Marius had marked and would recognize him.
"What's your name, friend?" the nobleman asks, but his expression and tone are not friendly.

GM Catullus |

The servant freezes as Marius snatches the alchemical bar from his hands, stammering out "M-my lord! Gareth, my lord. Is something wrong?"

Marius Erallan |

Study Target this goober. Also if it matters the alchemical thingy is in Marius' pocket partially wrapped in the handkerchief, he's not still holding that.
"Perhaps. Where did you get that little knick-knack, Gareth? And do you know what it does?"
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 = 8

GM Catullus |

The servant frowns in confusion. "It was one of the Phalanx, my lord, said the scent would keep the bees calm for the evening and prevent any incidents." He seems quite unnerved by the confrontation, but does not seem to be lying.
Several people at the edge of the crowd start turning their heads towards Marius, frowning at the unseemly scene.

Lotti Qeb |

Lotti’s eyes crinkle with happiness at Marius’s deft handling of the situation, but widen as the crowd around her starts to murmur. This calls for a distraction. But who to pick... Yes, that could work.
”Forsooth, what is this that appears before my eyes!?” The “soothesayer” points dramatically at the Princess Eutropia. ”Such brightness, such brilliance in that aura - why, it’s blinding!” She drapes a hand across her face as if to block out the afternoon sun. ”I cannot stand before it - it’s overwhelming!” Gracefully the gnome collapses to the ground as if overwhelmed by the sight in front of her while still managing to not crush her dress nor show anything unsightly to the noble folks’ sensibilities.
Bluff to Create Diversion: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

GM Catullus |

Meanwhile, the princess continues her speech, either unaware or ignoring the commotion happening a few dozen paces away.
"But we gather here to discuss matters of state, as well. And just as the exaltation reminds us that our glorious empire must always look out into the world to refresh the greatness of its leadership, we must all look out into the world around us and see how it has grown. The child-nations our empire
birthed - Andoran, Cheliax, Lastwall - have grown strong by examining the great traditions they inherited from our motherland, and embracing those relevant to this new world and discarding those that held them back. So too will we, this very night, examine one of Taldor's oldest traditions - primogeniture - with eyes wide open, to determine whether it has held us back from the glory and stability our wayward states have found."
Murmurs arise from the crowd, some of the assenting, others doubtful, others yet scoffing in disagreement.
"Our obligation tonight is not about one person or one vote in the senate. It is about the nation we love and about ensuring that nation does not fall behind the times. We are the inheritors of mighty Azlant, and I say that we must work together to avoid sharing that old empire's fate. Taldor endures!"
Applause and calls ring out as she hops down from the railing, and is promptly surrounded with both supporters and critics.
Marius has successfully prevented an incident, but people have taken note of him walking away from the speech. Marius has -2 to influence checks for the next 2 social rounds.
There are 5 social rounds until the next event.

GM Catullus |

Rose makes her way to the Gallery for her first assignment. Martella needs a sealed letter delivered to Count Orlundo Zespire in the Imperial Archives.
Requires a DC 12 Escape Artist or combat maneuver check.
The crowd has thinned a little around personages of import, and they look much more approachable now. The High Strategos remains in the Arcade of Triumphs, as expected, while Princess Eutropia continues to converse with both supporters and detractors in the Courtyard, flanked by Lady Morilla.
In the Gallery, Rose and Lotti can both spot Countess Abrielle Pace, who is dividing her attention between the various performances and entertainment, and the observation of fellow nobles and senators. Aside from Count Zespire, the Imperial Archives are occupied by both Duke Leonard Centimus and by Grand Duke Avernathus. And lastly, Baron Nicolaus Okerra can be found on the Senate Floor, together with a vaguely familiar figure of a freckled young man, looking out of place among the finery.
You can now influence to your heart's content. Reminder of possible actions during a social round:
* Discover check - to learn either a skill you can use to influence an NPC, or a weakness that gives a bonus on future influence checks. Discovery skills are listed in the spreadsheet for each NPC.
* Influence an NPC - you can use one of the influence skills for a particular NPC to try and influence them. Other skills can be also used, but the DC will be higher.
* Influence an area - using the relevant skills for each room, in an attempt to gain points towards the room rewards.
* Attempt a mission-related skill check - for missions that do not involve influencing an NPC.

Raesilia Talbot |

Escape artist, Gallery benefit +2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
When Lotti suddenly falls to the ground in somewhat dramatic fashion, Rose supresses a spike of alarm for the woman on the floor below her, figuring she was probably fine and just playing some part in her routine.
For now, she had work to do. She checks her pouch for the sealed envelope and makes her way down the stairway, gliding through the open spots in the sea of people she'd spotted earlier. She ignores an idea of using the servant's stairs for now, which would be even more of a direct approach, on the count of not wanting to risk anyone seeing a noble lady emerging from the halls of 'common rabble'.
She finds her uncle-far removed in the library well in time and pauses momentarily to grab a book and slide the sealed letter in between, somewhere she thinks is out of sight, to where the upper tip is only just visible.
Slight of hand, if required: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Afterwards, she approaches him casually.
"Always a pleasure to see you, dear uncle-far removed! How are you finding the gala thusfar? I heard good fortune came your way recently and that your shipment problems in Ridonport have suddenly vanished," she smiles warmly and makes a brief wink at the Count. "I wish I could stay and catch up for a while, but I'm afraid father requires me to mingle. Though if you have a moment of time, I'd highly recommend reading the middle section of 'The virtues of general Arnisant' here. I've been told it's essential reading."
She hands him the book and glides over the envelop's upper edge with her thumb.

Mirann Zalar |

Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Mirann excuses herself from the Courtyard to start pilfering the Earl's treasures, taking the silk fan and fanning herself with it as if it had always been hers and she had absentmindedly set it down there.

GM Catullus |

Rose easily navigates the Senate floor to the Imperial Archives, where Count Orlundo Zespire is conversing with a male half-elf in a wheelchair, who can be none other than Duke Centimus.
"...have to say, the rigging on some of those dhows is quite ingenious. The lateen sails have a smaller surface than square ones, naturally, but they are more maneuverable. You can imagine how difficult it would..." Count Zespire stops as he notices Rose, bowing slightly with a tired smile. "Ah, Miss Talbot. I am delighted to see you here, although I am afraid that this particular place is not very exciting."
Duke Centimus nods in greeting, his expression becoming somewhat wary. His black hair is gathered in a tight ponytail, pulling the tan skin of his round face a little taut.
"Leonard, this is my third cousin once removed, Lady Raesilia Talbot. Miss Talbot, this is Duke Centimus, also from Tandak." Once the introductions are complete, he draws his brows together. "Yes, a messy affair. Things are better now, but we cannot always count on the intervention of mysterious benefactors." He frowns harder as Rose offers him the book, but then notices her subtle gesture and gives her a sharp look. "Indeed. I shall be sure to take a look. Ah, and if you're headed to the gallery and run into Junior Senator Duo, please give her this note. Do send my regards to your father, and enjoy the Gala."
In the Arcade of Triumphs, the recent disgrace of Earl Vernisant appears to have lessened the interest in his artifact exhibit, and Mirann is able to liberate the beautiful silk fan without anyone seemingly noticing. The area is too busy for Lotti to notice anything of note among the displays, and people don't seem to be paying much attention to her.
Still to act: Konstiantina, Marius

Lotti Qeb |

Lotti can't decide if she's annoyed or relieved that her dramatic outburst had so little impact. Dusting herself off (and discretely smoothing out the creases with a bit of prestidigitation), she "follows her calling" back inside the Arcade of Triumphs. They can't have just put out the good silverware where anyone could waltz in and take it... could they? Well, they are nobles...
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
"Oh, excuse me, young lady!" The gnome waves a hand at Mirann. "If you have a moment, I've heard about someone you absolutely must meet. Your stars are aligned with hers, after all..."
Mirann would be ideal for influencing Wyssilka with her outstanding Performance abilities.

Marius Erallan |

"One of the Phalanx..." Marius repeats to himself, aware of the growing attention on himself. With a shake of his head he files that bit of information away and decides to drop the matter for now. "No matter, I find myself in need a drink. If you could bring a pair of whiskey sours for myself and the gentleman there, by the row of helms, that would be splendid." Leaving the servant to puzzle over the exchange on his own time, Marius returns to his prior conversationalist.
"Apologies, where were we?" he asks, glancing over towards the High Strategos' entourage.
I'll get another post and some rolls up tomorrow!

Konstiantina Mokei |

Konstiantina allows herself to drift with the crowd, acknowledging greetings from old acquaintances with a nod of her head, and choosing to ignore their questioning glances as they inspect her raiment.
Oh, but she has missed this frivolity not at all; though in truth, perhaps only now that she is working for Lady Lotheed does she appreciate all the deadly business that was taking place beneath the veneer of vacuous fashion, pompous boasting, and idle luxury.
Entering the senate floor, Konstiantina seeks out Baron Okerra; this moment is a prime opportunity to impress upon him the value of repaying his debts to Martella.

GM Catullus |

Baron Okerra is conversing with a younger man, almost as tall as he is, wearing a shining breastplate with scarlet wings crossed with swords engraved on the shoulders. He has straight, dirty blond hair that is just long enough to be tied at the base of his neck, and a strong jaw. As Konstiantina comes closer, a snatch of their conversation can be heard.
"...foolish. It is Cheliax we should be fighting, not Qadira. Instead of these self-serving conflicts we could do some good, liberate the common folk from the tyranny of House Thrune and their diabolism!" His passion is evident in his tone and his clenched fist, although he keeps his voice low. Baron Okerra nods, but his gaze wanders a little - it is difficult to tell if he agrees with the younger man, or is simply being polite.

Marius Erallan |

"So, you were telling me something about the Blackhill Siege--in what is now the River Kingdoms, is that right?" After prompting the other fellow into another monologue Marius gives the conversation as little attention as he is able, making occasionally polite noises while he surreptitiously watches the High Strategos' entourage--specifically, whether someone who looks like a Phalanx soldier rejoins the group, even briefly.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Konstiantina Mokei |

There. Baron Okerra. The hero of Marat County, and the darling of the tournament circuit. No easy target, but Martella desired the man brow beaten, so...
Konstiantina sweeps down into the Senate floor, and joins the pair even as the baron's attention seems wavering. Her smile is soft as she meets the other man's gaze, which she hold until he gets the hint and leaves her with the baron to converse in privacy.
Knowledge Nobility: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
"If I may have a moment of your time, Baron?" Her voice is husky, pleasant, but very much a velvet glove. "I don't believe we've spoken before, but I am Lady Konstiantina Mokei, of House Mokei, paladin of Saranrae. I've heard much of your honor, your martial prowess, and your exemplary leadership. I was there - what was it - six years ago? When you unhorsed Sir Veverra at the Golden Jubilee. What a grand victory that was. And I remember with utmost clarity the honor your showed your fallen opponent when you refused to take advantage of his momentary vertigo from being unhorsed, and allowed him time to compose himself before dismounting and crossing blades. Not that it did him much good."
Konstiantina's tone remains enigmatic throughout; she's praising him, yes, but still her words are slightly cool, as if she's reflecting, recollecting facts that serve a greater purpose than mere adulation.
"Memories of your honorable conduct are such that surely it's unnecessary for me to mention Lady Lotheed's interests, and her expectations that you meet your debts to her? A man of your integrity and lineage needs no reminders as to the correct course of action in these matters."
[I'm not exactly sure how best to use a Knowledge Nobility check in this approach, so hopefully my mentioning my own lineage and his good 'breeding' will suffice!]

Raesilia Talbot |

Meanwhile, done with her first delivery, Rose ascends the stairs to the Gallery again and uses the vantage point to spot for potential problems, as well as make herself visible to her allies if they needed her for something.

GM Catullus |

Marius Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
High Strategos Pythareus seems constantly surrounded by admirers and hangers-on, so it is difficult to get close enough to overhear the conversations. At the moment he seems engaged with scarred-faced man with auburn hair cropped short, wearing a functional-looking breastplate. Marius can also spot Earl Vernisant hanging at the edge of the crowd and growing increasingly cross as the others ignore him, including the High Strategos himself.
For the High Strategos task, a DC 15 Stealth check is needed to get close enough.
On the Senate floor, Baron Okerra regards Konstiantina with puzzlement as she approaches. This handsome bear of a man stands a head taller than the crowd, and while starting to show his age with flecks of white in his black hair and beard, he retains a youthful smile and gentle eyes. His companion has the more unusual reaction - instead of disdain at her clerical vestments he perks up visibly, responding with a dignified bow, but either not getting the hint or deciding to hold fast and introduce himself in turn. "Lady Mokei, a pleasure." He does sound genuinely pleased. "Remilliard Kastner, paladin of Ragathiel."
Baron Okerra smiles at Konstiantina's reminder of that particular tournament. "He did put up a good fight, I'll give him that. And I am flattered that you remember it so clearly, Lady Mokei." At that, Lord Kastner rolls his eyes good-naturedly. "Honestly, Nicolaus, it's just not fair. You have more than a decade on me and it's still you that the ladies find more interesting." Throwing up his hands in a gesture of surrender, he bows again to Konstiantina, an amused smile on his lips and genuine respect in his gaze and posture. "I truly hope to talk to you again, Lady Mokei. Please enjoy your evening." With that, he takes his leave, allowing you to speak in private with the baron.
The mention of his debts transforms his expression into a pained and embarrassed one. "Ah, I see. And I thought you were here to praise me for my past victories." He gives a weak smile, but his countenance is troubled. "You are right, I do have certain obligations towards Lady Lotheed, although forgive me for saying so, but you don't seem like the usual type of person that she employs. I would be very curious to hear what has brought about your association with such a... well, I do appreciate where she is coming from, and I believe she has genuine concern for Taldor and its future, but I have to wonder if such radical changes that she seems to be in support of are indeed what is best for our country." He pauses to sweep his gaze around the circular room, pensively. "Perhaps it is this place that reminds me that our greatness was built not just on daring military expeditions and marvelous feats of engineering, but also on order and the rule of law. So I find myself at an impasse, Lady Mokei - do I heed my duty towards my country, or do I heed my personal honour and the fulfillment of my debts? You seem an honourable person yourself, and I would like to hear your thoughts."
Round 2! Everyone can act.

Raesilia Talbot |

With the message to Count Zespire delivered, Rose takes a moment to reflect on her direct priority. While she could deliver Zespire's message to the next receiver, it might help more to gather useful information first. She'd received a lot of valuable information from the attendants of the Gallery and from Mirann's relayed information from the Courtyard.
To her side, she sees Konstiantina at work with Baron Okerra and she *had* promised to offer support somewhere on the way. Perhaps it would help to influence her surroundings?
Two party members still need to pick which Major NPC they want to learn an influence skill for, due to Mirann's earlier success.
She makes her way over, gliding through the crowd, and attempts to focus on the debates happening in the Senate Floor. Recalling what the judge taught her back in Ridonport and making full use of her own reasoning capacity, she inserts herself into some of the more prominent debates and attempts to leave a good impression. Her weapon of choice this time was mostly pointing out logical fallacies and homing in on perceived insecurities of opponents.
Sense motive, attempt to influence the Senate Floor room: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Well... that sucks. :) Sorry.

GM Catullus |

Rose spots her father on the Senate floor, the Duke engaged in conversation with two others. One of them is a good-looking younger man with dark skin and long, straight black hair, while the other is a very well-dressed man with dark hair held back by a silver diadem and a neatly trimmed beard and moustache, leaning on a jeweled walking stick.
Her attempt to participate in a heated debate goes poorly, as her opponent rudely speaks over her, raising his voice and being generally terribly obnoxious.

Konstiantina Mokei |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

"Sir Kastner," says Konstiantina, at once surprised at the revelation of his own divine patronage and a little ashamed for having dismissed him so cavalierly. Her voice is forthight and sure. "I do hope we get a chance to connect later in the gala. Please look for me."
When she and Baron Okerra are alone, she listens gravely to his words, his deliberations, and inclines her head at the last.
"I cannot speak for whom she usually employs, but I have found her in all our dealings to be fair, honorable in her pursuits, and dedicated to the greater good of Taldor. None of these are in conflict with my faith, and in fact her and my goals are aligned. Hence my willingness to aid her, and through her, the Princess and Taldor at large."
She smiles tightly at a couple who brush by, turning so that they have room to pass, and then resumes their conversation.
"I find your question, alas, to be a simple one. Please excuse my directness. I hold my honor highly, for I represent the interests of Saranrae. My personal honor is thus aligned with her own, and there can be no strife between the two. In similar manner - I would imagine - that your personal honor should be in alignment with your duty toward our country. And if it is not? Then your duty is leading you astray, for I know you to be a man of integrity, forthright leadership, and greatly respected by the people of Taldor, from the lowest to the most high. Anything that would prevent a lord such as yourself from acting in accordance to your honor is an indictment of the laws that constrain your actions."
Knowledge Nobility: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
"Think of it this way, Baron Okerra. Would Taldaris, when but a young military leader of a mere city-state, have transformed his title in Oppara to a fledgling unified nation if he had allowed his duty to impinge on his honor? Would he have secured the allegiance and resources of the larger city states if he did not show himself to be an honorable man? The very fact that you see daylight between duty and honor tells me that your duty is leading you astray, and that you should honor your debts to Lady Lotheed, and in so doing, ensure that you act in accordance with your principles and sweep of history."

Mirann Zalar |

Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Mirann continues plundering the Earl's collection of artifacts, greedily choosing the most expensive item.
Appraise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

GM Catullus |

Mirann
The spyglass looks like the most valuable item of the assembled collection, a beautifully made piece with ornate gold and silver scrolling and high quality lenses. The scarves attached to Mirann's costume make it almost child's play to disguise the theft as she sweeps them over the display while leaning over and pretending to read a plaque detailing the history of each item.
Konstiantina
Barona Okerra nods thoughtfully at Konstiantina's words. "Thank you for your insight, Lady Mokei, I appreciate your forthrightness. You think very highly of me, to believe that my honour can guide me better than my duty, and I can only hope to be worthy of merely a fraction of your esteem." He seems genuinely touched by the paladin's assessment, and a little flustered.
"My concerns are somewhat assuaged by your account of Lady Martella. I do not doubt her noble goals and ideals, but the changes she supports are... significant, not to say unprecedented. I worry about the impact they might have on the stability of our country."
Weakness revealed for Baron Okerra. He is concerned by the impact of Eutropia’s successful bid to end primogeniture. As a defender of law and order, he believes strongly in tradition, and worries that the princess’s actions endanger the stability of Taldan law. An influence check that would address his concern has a +4 bonus.

Lotti Qeb |

”Darling, are you certain I can’t distract you from these dull displays?” Lotti looks up at Mirann with large pleading eyes before breaking into a grin. ”The fates have revealed secrets to me, after all.”
Not certain how we’d share knowledge of how best to influence folks, so I’m trying the ‘play it out’ method. Or is that too much busywork?

Raesilia Talbot |

At the Senate Floor, Rose, unsettled by suddenly spotting her father, allows herself to be overshouted as she directs her attention towards him and his fellow conversationalists.
Does Rose recognize these other two men? I'll roll a knowledge check below, not to influence anything but purely for recognition.
Knowledge: noblity: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

GM Catullus |

As Rose draws closer to Duke Talbot and his companions, snatches of conversation can be heard. "...would be a disaster for southern trade. My last visit to the Impossible Kingdoms managed to establish..." says Earl Varima, before Earl Merkodus interrupts him. "Do we truly need a trade route with such distant lands though, when we have much more convenient ones close at hand?". Duke Talbot frowns, but does not speak, simply watching the two younger men argue.
Lotti and Marius can still act in this round.

Marius Erallan |

Marking the High Strategos with Studied Target
Hoping to get a little closer to his quarry, Marius attempts to steer the conversation to some display pieces a bit closer to the entourage, but the fellow didn't take the bait.

Ugh

Raesilia Talbot |

'Seems like a trade discussion, but father isn't joining in... odd. Is something on his mind? Should I join instead? Maybe he'd take me more seriously if I impressed these other trade tycoons. If he'd confide in me more, I'd know more to share. Maybe it'd gain some positive attention from the crowd, too. But... I could get tied down here when I'm supposed to be delivering messages. And Konstiantina doesn't look like she needs any more help..."
Rose folds her hands and takes a few moments to think amidst the chaos of the Senate Floor happenings.

Lotti Qeb |

Lotti huffs a little at Mirann’s cold shoulder. ”Well, dear, should you decide to not ignore the fates, search for them in the silence after the lion’s roar.”

Lotti doesn't uncover much, but the presence of a seeress, and one so grandly attired at that, draws some attention and a few aides and guests ask for their fortunes to be told.
Some progress towards influencing the Courtyard.
The High Strategos has an air of vigilance, despite the crowd surrounding him, and Marius doesn't dare to get too close without a good cover.

“...so be wary, and do not linger under the branches of a cherry tree when the moon is high.” Lotti clasps her small hands around the young man’s palm. ”That is what the fates have spoken to me. Whether or not you believe them is up to you.”
As the last of the tall folks wander away laughing or looking thoughtful, the “seer” looks around once more for her friend Mirann. What’s taking her so long in there? As her gaze continues to wander across the courtyard, it comes to rest on a certain crown princess. Now that certainly would be one way to make an impression...
”Your Majesty!” The voice comes from near the noble’s hip where Lotti stands looking up at her. ”It is no accident that you are here, nor is it mere coincidence I have been guided by the voices of Fate to this spot as well! A moment of your time, that you may spend the rest of it empowered by prophecy!” Lotti closes her eyes dramatically and holds one hand to her forehead. “The spirits... they...hmm?” The gnome opens her eyes and looks at Eutropia with a confused look. ”They wish to speak with you about... your dog?”

'It's a gamble. But...'
Making an impulsive decision, she steps forward to the three men. "Good evening Father, Earl Varima, Earl Verkodus," she gives a polite bow. "Apologies for intruding, it seemed as though my father was tired, and I overheard your discussion purely by chance. However, I couldn't help but wonder why this should be an argument. Close trading route tend to be low-risk, low-reward investments whereas long trading routes are the opposite."
"Now, I admit I don't know the specifics of these goods - spices? - but I do know the underlying principles of trade. High-risk endeavors are better off when covered with low-risk ones. Although, In this case it appears previous success on those has already been met, and less of a gamble than they'd normally be. Perhaps it would be worthwhile investing in the other's company to profit from their respective expertise? And should you seek to expand using those investments, as the Talbots, we have an extensive trading network of our own that will provide you the best prices for ship-building materials, or whatever else you might require to outfit your merchant caravans. Surely a solution that benefits each of us?"
She gives what she thinks is a charming smile to close the argument.
diplomacy? to influence room: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (10) + 18 = 28
I'm having trouble envisioning this as something else than a diplomacy check, but I could also use the daily Noble Scion benefit to use Craft instead of any knowledge check (Local?), which would be a 20.

GM Catullus |

Lotti - success
Princess Eutropia's brow furrows slightly as she attempts to make sense of this unusual address. "My dog...? Why would the spirits want to talk to me about Taldogis? Are they perhaps animal lovers?" She lets out a long-suffering sigh. "Someone complained again, didn't they."
She regards Lotti with curiosity, taking in her mystical outfit.
Rose - partial success
Duke Georgi Backus Talbot II straightens his back ever so slightly at the suggestion that he might appear tired. His perpetual frown deepens a notch and he wrinkles his nose almost imperceptibly at the idea. "I was merely waiting for all arguments to be presented before settling the matter." He nods to the two men, who bow deeply to Rose, making introductions. "Raesilia, this is Earl Varima, from Zimar. And Earl Merkondus, from Oppara. Lord Varima, Lord Merkondus, this is my daughter Raesilia."
Earl Varima seems rather excited by Rose's interest in the topic. "You are of course correct, my lady. We should focus on both types of trade, but as Earl Merkondus pointed out, the close range trading routes already exist, and are well-established, whereas I am proposing that we expand the long range ones. We are missing out on not just goods, but also culture, by not investing more in trade with distant lands."
Earl Merkondus smiles indulgently at the Vudrani noble. "My dear Varima, I do not deny the importance of long distance trading, but the current political climate requires us to concentrate our efforts closer to home. Wouldn't you agree, Duke Talbot?" Rose's father regards Earl Merkondus rather coldly in reply. "Affairs are a little unsettled at the moment, but I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't taken risks. Calculated risks, mind you." The last is addressed to Earl Varima, a hint of sternness in the Duke's tone.
I added some extra optional NPCs to the spreadsheet. Each of these has simplified influence rules - free knowledge nobility checks to find out their background, no weaknesses - and can provide long-term advantages if influenced. Should any of you decide to try and influence them, you get 2 additional social rounds to do so per optional NPC.

Konstiantina listens gravely, linking her hands behind her back and bowing her head as she gives the baron's concerns thought.
It's clear that she's not simply hastening to assure him and win him to her point.
"Valid concerns, my lord. I won't lie and say that this change will come about smoothly. That there aren't those opposed to equality and fairness, to modern sensibilities and a more progressive outlook. And that these same traditional elements might not cause trouble, both for the princess and Taldor."
At this she meets the baron's gaze squarely.
"But those of us entrusted, either by the gods, fate, or good fortune, to play a part in the future of our country cannot allow fear to govern our actions. To do so dooms Taldor to ignominy far quicker than striving for what is right, what is best, and what is honorable. Those of us who have a voice in these matters must lead by example, and in doing so, both steer our country to a better future, but also show those who hover on the brink of indecision that the good men and women of our nation are forthright and carried by conviction. That will sway them to our cause, and mitigate what unrest this change might bring."
At this she smiles, the severity of her tone lessening somewhat. "After all, if Taldaris himself had been so concerned about upsetting the status quo, and the unrest his war might cause, do you think he would have founded our country to begin with? No. He did what he knew to be right, and the repercussions of his faith and actions brought about the very nation we now seek to defend and ennoble further."

In that case, I'll take three free social rounds to attempt to influence all three current conversationalists.
Rose slightly frowns upon seeing the interplay between some of the major Taldan trading figures and, with a shock, realizes she's unable to recall any information about either of the Earls, even though she really should be able to! Stuff like this had been drilled into her head during her upbringing, over and over again. So why...? Was this a blackout...? Nerves over the mission and the vote getting in the way?
'No! I can do this. I just have to focus on what they're saying. On what I *do* know...'
Instead she smiles at Earl Varima first and nods along with his relay. "And what a loss that would be, not spreading Vudrani culture further! Have you had the opportunity to visit the Courtyard yet? There is a traditional Vudrani dancer commanding the attention of everyone, even the Princess! It was such a pleasure, to make her traditional bharatanatyam dress at one of our stores. I dare say there will be excess demand for Vudrani goods soon! Perhaps we could even do so here, from our own established companies?"
She looks around to see if Mirann is in view, and motions towards her dress if so. Unless, of course, her partner in crime was about to snag another artefact!
Diplomacy, Attempt to influence Earl Varima, focus mostly on Vudrani culture: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33
She then turns to her Father. "Or maybe it would make a worthwhile expansion of our assests instead? It's a low investment, to hire a shop and move some tailoring personnel to exotic figures and fabrics. We already have some of the pattern books at the Thread Rare, and perhaps Earl Varima would know of an expert we could consult during the startup? And that would be only one possible branch."
Diplomacy to Influence Duke Talbot: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 24
To the last Earl, she allows her smile to fade to a more serious look. "You speak of the current political climate, and I believe there is something to be said for worries of such nature indeed. However, would that not speak in favor of offshore holdings? No matter what happens in this region, investments further away from home would be much less easily affected."
Diplomacy? to influence Earl Merkondus, Rising Star since he seems the hardest target: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (3) + 20 = 23

Konstiantina
Baron Okerra listens thoughtfully to the paladin's argumentation, smiling faintly every now and then, although not with amusement. "I used to count myself among those 'traditional elements', you know. I feel that tradition is important and should not be discounted. But I also have a daughter, my only child, and I need to think of her future as well." He appraises Konstiantina frankly, nodding. "I can only hope that she will have some of your integrity and passion, when she grows up."
He takes a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds and then expelling it in an almost explosive sigh. "I concede all your points, Lady Mokei. There is a fear of change, a fear of the future in us older generations, but we must consider those who come after us, not only those who went before. In this, my duty and my honour align. Thank you for showing me that."
He bows deeply, a twinkle appearing in his eyes as he straightens again. "If you ever find yourself in the county of Meratt in the Tandak prefecture, it would give me great pleasure to host you on my estate. I am certain that my daughter would love to meet you as well." Almost as an afterthought, he adds. "And you can tell Lady Lotheed that I will honour my promises, and gladly."
Baron Okerra has been successfully influenced!
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Senate floor...
Rose
Earl Varima is instantly captivated by Rose's mention of traditional Vudrani dance and garments. "Oh no, I have missed it! Do you think she will perform again later? And you made her dress yourself? That is fantastic, I would love to see it - and perhaps commission some pieces for myself!" He is fairly beaming with excitement and pleasure.
Duke Talbot grips his chin as he thinks the proposal over. "If this dancer becomes as popular as you suggest, yes, that would be a sensible investment."
Earl Merkondus tilts his head to concede the point. "That would be a prudent course of action, if the security of assets could be assured. Although it might also signal lack of faith in Taldor's stability, which comes with its own... issues." He shifts his weight on his cane with a pained smile. "Lady Talbot, Your Grace, it has been wonderful conversing with you, but I find that I must sit for a spell. Please enjoy the rest of your evening, and I hope to have the pleasure of your company again in the future." He bows, less deeply than before, his movements a little stiff and stilted.
As Earl Merkondus retreats with a visible limp, Rose can see a familiar figure hovering nearby. The freckled face of Master Kalbio, whom she had first encountered in the General Arnisant museum in Ridonport, and the recipient of this year's Exaltation, breaks into a wide smile as her eyes alight upon him.
All three attempts were successful, they are all half influenced. :)
Marius and Mirann are up.

Mirann Zalar |

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 1
Mirann is distracted when Lotti approaches her and brushes her off, but when the gnome tries to convince her to follow, the dancer gapes at Lotti, picking up on entirely the wrong message.
"Sorry!" she calls after her diminutive companion, blushing. "You're just not my type!"
Rattled, she walks away, putting distance between herself and her crimes. She finds Rose and arrives in time to hear the Senator Varima bemoaning not seeing her sing, and steps in.
"Hello," she curtsies deeply, "pardon my intrusion but I am the dancer that my friend here speaks so highly of. Mirann Zalar, trained at the Kitharodian Academy. If it would please milords, I would gladly give you a private performance, but I'm afraid it may be lacking given the lack of stage or music."
Dance: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20
She dances slow, with precise movement of her hands and feet, but her nervousness shows and she second guesses herself often.

Marius Erallan |

A trifle exasperated at this point, Marius makes his excuses and extricates himself from the ongoing history monologue. Crossing over to Pythareus' entourage Marius catches a snippet of conversation about the newest government of Galt.
"Apologies for the interruption, sirs and ladies, I couldn't help but overhear--I was posted on the Galtan border during my time in Phalanx. Who's heads have the Grey Gardeners taken now?" Making certain that he was out of the High Strategos' field of view, Marius half-listens to the rumors and keeps his quarry in his peripheral vision.
Stealth: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 1 = 25 Hopefully Konstiantina's luck is contagious!

Mirann Zalar |

After dancing for the collected Earls, Mirann heads to the Servant's Quarters, flustered and frustrated that she let her nerves get to her. If she can get all her tasks done, however, then she should be able to enjoy the rest of the evening with nothing hanging over her head other than having a good time.
With some direction, she makes her way to a wine rack and tries to locate the correct wine, 150 years old and from the Tandak Prefecture.
Appraise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

GM Catullus |

Marius
The former Phalanx manages to position himself where a tall armour display obscures him, but close enough to overhear the High Strategos... if he can manage to tune out his new conversation partners.
Marius Perception/Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
One success!
One of the people in the group, a fussy old man with large rings on each finger, waves a hand dismissively. "Oh, who can keep track anymore. I am more worried about them infecting our good citizens with their ridiculous ideas. Revolution, pwah!"
As the old man continues ranting about Galt, Marius can hear snatches of conversation from the other side of the armour stand. A man to be conversing with the High Strategos, his strong, authoritarian voice reminding Marius of some of his battlefield commanders. "... than ever, a strong show of force is needed. And simply pouring money into the military's coffers is not enough for that! Taldor is famous for its incredible feats of engineering, but that was thousands of years ago. We are falling behind, technologically, and that is something that we cannot afford, Pythareus." The High Strategos snorts in response. "And you think having a woman on the throne will help with that? You have taken leave of your senses, Cicato." However, there is no bite behind the words, and the High Strategos seems... rather in a good mood. As Marius risks a glance behind him, movement catches his eye - Maxilar Pythareus seems to be ever so slightly bouncing on the balls of his feet, then back on his heels, hands held behind his back in a parade rest stance. From what you have heard of the gruff, practical military man, his appearance at such events usually comes at the insistence of Grand Prince Stavian III, and he generally does not have a good time.
Mirann
The Vudrani Earl is simply enchanted with the impromptu performance, attempting to hum a keening melody that sounds strange to most everyone's ears, and clapping softly to keep the tempo. "Enchanting, simply lovely!" he exclaims as Mirann concludes her performance. "I am certain that my father would love to see you perform, he is older now and can no longer travel, you know. If you are ever in Zimar, please seek out my family, we have many connections in and around the city. And, if I may add, we are a tempering influence in the area." His tone grows a little colder as his expression darkens just a hint. "There are far too many who would like nothing more than to see us dragged into war with Qadira again."
Sucess! Earl Gahez Varima has been influenced and can be a potential ally in the future.
He looks a little disappointed when Mirann makes her excuses and retreats from the Senate floor, but does not press, instead turning back to the conversation with Rose and Duke Talbot.
Servants' Area
While several hidden corridors crisscross the senate building, allowing servants to come and go without disturbing the assembled politicians, this area houses most of the storerooms, workshops, and kitchens where the building's small army of servants bustle around to maintain the façade of opulence. Even this area, never meant for noble eyes, is of exceptional quality, though the gilt has worn thin on most corners, and here and there cheap repairs mar artistic furniture. The staff are initially confused by Mirann's presence and attempt to guide her politely back to the guest areas. Initially misinterpreting her request, they present her with a glass of white wine, then a red, then a sparkling, until they finally notice her focus on a particular bottle of wine, which sits on its own shelf in a wine rack, a large label dangling from red string wrapped around the neck.
"Ah, milady, million pardons, but we were instructed not to open that one just yet. Is there perhaps something else we can offer you?"
Round 4! Everyone can act.

Mirann is quickly and fully liquored up by the kitchen staff, not refusing a single drink that is handed to her, but she keeps her wits about her and pushes through. "Could I just hold it? I love the calligraphy on the label, the age of the glass, the wax around the cork. It," she hiccups, not used to drinking so much or so quickly, "it was my, my husband that donated it, of course, and I am entitled to do so, hic!, I believe."
Dip: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 +4 if Bluff
She cradles the bottle like an infant, rocking it in her arms and playing up her own intoxication as she hides the syringe in the crook of her elbow and gently presses the needle through the wax and cork, ruining the wine.
DD: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Hiding the syringe amidst the many folds of her outfit, she holds the bottle out before her, but a bit too close to a candle, causing the wax to run just so and entirely disguise her actions.
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Konstiantina Mokei |

"If I ever find myself in your home county, my lord, I would be honored to pay your estate a visit. If your daughter has but a fraction of your charm and wisdom, then she is sure to be a delight."
With that, heart racing, though she makes every effort to remain cool and collected, she bows politely to Baron Okerra, and excuses herself, walking away blindly as she tries not to reel over the intensity of that exchange. Never had she spoken so with so powerful a man, never had she sought to bend another's opinion to her own. The sensation was at once intoxicating, the success a heady brew, yet she found herself immediately distancing herself emotionally from the experience.
It was not you that convinced the Baron, but rather the righteousness of your arguments and the cause of primogeniture. You were fortunate that Okerra was a sufficiently good and wise man to be open to being persuaded. Most of those here... will not be.
Having gathered herself, she turns and begins searching for Duke Centimus and Countess Pace. Hadn't she seen the Countess in the gallery? Perhaps she should ascend, speak with Martella about her success while she was at it...
But the sight of Remilliard Kastner standing off to one side by himself pulls her away from her goal. She approaches with a concilatory smile, and stops at a safe distance to incline her head of gleaming gold.
"Lord Kastner," she says, voice husky and strong. "I apologize for my rudeness before; I had pressing business with Baron Okerra, and only realized too late that you were a man of quality and faith. Will you forgive my brashness?"
Diplomacy to smooth over previous curtness: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

Raesilia Talbot |

"Oh. Oh dear. That could be bad - he was with Cincia! If he remembers... can't take that chance."
Hoping Kalbio would get the message, she gives him a polite smile and gestures for him to wait a moment.
She glances at her father and his perpetual scowl and gently places a hand on his shoulder. "Father, perhaps we should do a show of hospitality in view of all the important political figures? If anything, it wouldn't hurt our business prospects. Allow me to introduce the intended recipitant of this year's festival to our colleagues here. Perhaps his famous skills as a weaver also present some unexpected opportunities for us."
Free social round, attempt to influence Duke Talbot.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38
Afterwards, she rises and motions towards to Kalbio at a relaxed pace, gliding more than walking across. "Greetings, Master Kalbio. How are you finding the festival so far? It is your party, after all."
She folds her hands over her lower abdomen and gives his greeting an equally genuine smile in return.
I'll wait for continuing on how he reacts, but the goal would be to talk to him briefly about the events in Ridonport and then influence the room by telling him important things I believe he should know as an up and coming noble, with the only knowledge: local check I could make today. I hope the room will appreciate the gesture/networking opportunities.

Mirann
Ah! A drunk noblewoman. They knew how to deal with that. "Of course, milady, here it is... oh, careful, milady!" As the wax begins to soften on the seal, a very alarmed servant gently eases it out of Mirann's grasp, while another flourishes a tray of freshly prepared hors-d'oeuvres to try and distract her. "Would milady like a bite, perhaps?" None of them seems to notice what had really happened as they carefully replace the bottle on the rack and continue to try and delicately shoo this strangely dressed noble lady out of the servant areas.
Konstiantina
Lord Remilliard Kastner smiles and raises a hand to forestall any further apologies. "Lady Mokei, there is nothing to forgive. You seem like someone who is driven by great purpose, and far be it from me to stand in the way of such."
Senator Kastner, paladin of Ragathiel, has a solid reputation among churches of good-aligned deities, as he regularly uses his platform to pursue progressive reforms within Taldor and is a supporter of many charitable works. When Cheliax seceded from Taldor, most of the Kastner line departed as well. When the Chelish Kastners' long‑standing practice of diabolism came to light in the Thrune-dominated nation, the Taldan Kastners felt their decision to remain supremely vindicated, and they managed to regain a sliver of their noble standing within Taldor.
Remilliard Kastner's influence skills are Diplomacy and Knowledge religion. Likes: he is a strong believer in the power of redemption and the willingness to battle against evil. Dislikes: talk of modern Cheliax and diabolism.
Talking of weaving followed logically from the previous conversation of tailoring, patterns and branching out in the textile industry, so Duke Talbot nods his approval and even favours his daughter with a small, thin-lipped smile. Coming from him, that is high praise indeed.
Duke Talbot successfully influenced.
Kalbio's face lights up as Rose addresses him. "Gee, miss, it's all rather much, innit? All these people, an' the nice clothes, an' the jewelry, an' the food! Miss, 'ave you tasted the little pink squares? I don't know what's in them, but they're so good, they are!"

Mirann Zalar |

Mirann eagerly accepts the tray, taking the whole thing and finding a place to sit down and try and sober up from the three glasses of wine she had just downed as if they were water.
As she leaves with the tray, she curtsies to the servants. "You have all been," she gulps, trying to steady her feet, "most kind."
