Al detect's magic in the area. The strongest source seems to be coming from the pulpit.
The three big xulgaths carry mauls, and the thin one has a runed gauntlet and a silver circlet set with cracked moonstones (worth 40 gp).

so, do we think this is a safe-ish place to take a rest? I'm about tapped out right now..... Kvothe says to his companions as they gather the loot from this last fight.
are we taking a full rest here?
| Lady Alhambra |
"I can sense magic coming from the pulpit," the sorceress says, approaching it cautiously, slightly hunched over, as if she expects to be struck down from on high.
Does the magic seem to be coming from the pulpit itself, or something within it? If it seems to be hidden within, I call Didy over to give it a thorough search.
Once I get a good look I'll try to identify the magic. Likewise I try to identify the runes on the gauntlet (Arcana +13).

DC 15 to top off Al: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27
healing: 4d8 ⇒ (4, 8, 7, 1) = 20
That should leave just Didy down 6 and Ambro down 5, which I can live with. Once we gather any loot and clues here, I certainly second the vote to head back up to town to rest and probably make a bunch of purchases! :)

Detect magic isn't specific enough for that, you just get presence or absence of magic, and now you also get the five-foot square containing the highest level magic. It won't even tell you if a specific item is magical. You do get the school of the highest effect, so
Al knows that the strongest magic in the area is Necromancy.
Healing will take 30 minutes. Identifying items also takes 10 minutes an item unless you have a feat that speeds that up. That will put us at about 30 minutes elapsed by the time the gauntlet is identified, plus 10 minutes for any items from the pulpit you want to try to identify. Al or Kvothe could attempt to identify other items during the time Didy was spending healing though.
The pulpit contains a strand of prayer beads, a scrol, and a leather bound religious text devoted to Aroden. It's in quite good condition, and worth 75 gp.
Al identifies the gauntlet as a +1 striking spiked gauntlet.
| Creepy Carl |
Carl's eyes widen as he sees the runes on the gauntlet. I believe I can do something with that. Not here and now, but when we have a day to relax.
| Lady Alhambra |
Yep, while Didy is healing I will examine the items on the pulpit more closely and try to ID them.
| Didymus the Great |
Didy's tail begins wagging at an alarming speed at the discovery of a new bedtime story featuring the great Aroden. Once he finishes healing up his friends he excitedly flips through a few pages for a sample.
| Creepy Carl |
If it looks interesting, maybe we should get someone to copy the stories to a new journal. People get excited and treat them rough. I remember that we had 'reading' copies of certain tomes that had wine stains on them. And the folios with the slyphs...
GM_MG
|
| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
The book contains numerous stories and parables of Aroden. Didy is familiar with many of these, but the illuminations and presentation is quite beautiful.
Al is able to identify the beads as holy prayer beads, and the scroll as a scroll of heroism.
| Creepy Carl |
Carl drifts over as Didy looks through the book. This is more of an act of love, someone showing piety through deeds. Perhaps we should give this to the Professor... someone that would see this more for what it is, than as a pile of cash.
From the description, and it fits Didy background really well. We would probably only get 38 for the book, so like 9 per. The circus has done enough for Carl, that I don't mind donating it.
| Didymus the Great |
It sounds like it is an art item so it would sell for its full value, but either way I agree that we should bring it to the professor first. He may know of someone in town who would be interested in the item as more than just a valuable piece of loot. And I definitely agree we get a reading copy transcribed for bedtime :)
"Necromancy you say?" Didy comments as Al shares her findings. "Kvothe, can you try to dispel whatever wicked spell they cast to sully this place? Those stinky lizards have no respect for a place of worship!"
Assuming the level up granted a 4th spell slot I'd say it is worth trying to counteract the demonic desecration here before we head topside for some rest and shopping.
Regarding loot, the loot sheet has been updated and there are several items up for grabs (lesser elixir of life, moderate darkvision elixir, invisibility potion, invisible net).
I presumed that the striking rune is going to Carl as a transfer on to his trident, and the scroll of heroism goes to Kvothe.
@GM, can Al and Kvothe reattempt the check to ID the mystery salve we found in the babau fight?
Kvothe Incruentus
|
Looking through the items with everyone, Kvothe ponders if he can dispel the magic or if they are going to need some more Holy powers. I can try to dispel this magic, but we might need something more Holy for this....
if I can cast dispel magic for this I will, but not sure if we need Consecrate
| Creepy Carl |
We can only do our best with what we have. we may not be able to flood the area with goodness, but we can try to rinse the evil away.
| Didymus the Great |
@Kvothe, I think the GM needs a counteract check here, which is basically the same as you rolling for a spell attack (1d20+Cha+spell casting proficiency, so 1d20+15).
After that I think the consensus is to head back to the Professor and report our findings thus farm, then rest for the night. In the morning we can hit up the shops and sell our loot and gear up. If we end up selling the holy text we are looking at just under 200gp each!
GM_MG
|
The pall over the area seems to lift, although it doesn't seem to alleviate entirely. Whatever the xulgath were doing down here, your work isn't yet complete.
| Didymus the Great |
"Well that's better. Probably can't do more 'til we clear out the rest of those bad guys. but we can't do that 'til we get some rest. Hey Gizvib! Ready to meet the family?" he calls out excitedly as he rushes over to the quasit and takes him by the hand, leading him up to the surface, and on to the circus camp.
GM_MG
|
Leaving the complex provides no difficulties, although much remains unexplored.
Givzib hesitantly follows, using his innate invisibility spell to bypass the guards outside.
The circus is as you left it. A few working carnies wave as you pass by on your way to your quarters.
| Didymus the Great |
Didy cheerfully returns the waves to his fellow carnies as he makes a beeline for the Professor's trailer. Without a knock, he barges in, like usual.
"Hiya, Professor! Guess what? Oh, you'll never guess! We found Moonstone Hall and it is a temple to Aroden! Abandoned for some reason," he says shaking his head.
"But we found this super neat book that's all about him!" he says thrusting the book into his hands excitedly.
"Carl says it is too fancy for bedtime reading, but that maybe we can make a copy! Then you could read all of the new stories to me. Oh, it'll be wonderful!" he says tightly hugging the Professor's leg with one arm.
"Oh. Almost forgot. We found more of those stinky lizards down there and they were up to no good. No good at all." another shake of the head, "They have been summoning demons and forcing 'em to do all kinds of bad stuff. We saved a nice one though!"
Turning to the invisible quasit he's still leading by the hand, he pats the invisible hand and says, "Go on, Gizvib, The Professor's super nice. You can trust him."
GM_MG
|
"Ah, very good, very good!" the Professor says, eyeing the book.
"What a beautiful volume," he says, a trace of sadness in his voice as he carefully turns the pages.
The professor looks doubtfully at Didy, but when Givzib shyly appears, he reaches down and shakes his hand gravely.
"Pleased to meet you, Givzib. You can stay with Lemonpot, if you like."
Givzib nods and retreats behind Kvothe.

| Didymus the Great |
Didy claps vigorously at the circus family growing and finding a new home for his demonic friend. With this tail wagging, he rapidly runs back and forth between the professor and Givzib, licking their faces.
"Oh, I should mention... Givzib here says that he saw several people come and go down there including a woman that sounds a lot like Madam Dusklight! And we found some stuff that looks like it came from her, too!" he says as he displays the Invisible Net with initials, and the Ringmaster's Staff.
Afterwards he curls up in his small bed, and gently whines until the Professor agrees to read him a bedtime story from the new religious text.
The next morning he packs up their new valuables and heads to the store to do some shopping.
