Soundtrack 11 - Arabani Arms Testing - The Division Survival OST - Midtown Manifest
With varying degrees of optimism, you all line up one at a time to be shot by a (relatively) carefully calibrated artillery turret.
Going alphabetically:
Flenn - Piercing Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3, 5, 4) = 16
HK - Piercing Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 3, 1) = 13
Kaylee - Piercing Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 2, 2) = 12
Kitkul - Piercing Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 3, 5) = 16
Lightfoot - Piercing Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 1, 5, 2) = 15
Lynn - Piercing Damage: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 2, 1) = 14
All of your shields hold, but I need everyone to make a DC 17 Fortitude Save! Success means you are Dazzled for 1 round. Failure means you are Blinded for 1d3 ⇒ 1 rounds!
Kaylee Fortitude Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Kaylee blinks, blindly, a bit.
Crax comes back over once the test is complete, while the R&D team gives a unanimous thumb's up from behind their blast shield.
"That was great! SO, who's ready to turn their environmentals on and take a stroll outside for a live-fire bout with our new Tyrant-Class Supremacy robots? They're programmed not to fire on unconscious enemies or use any area-attacks if somebody goes down nearby, plus we've got medical droids on standby, so you should be perfectly safe! Plus, if you want, you can take any of our weapons or shields out into the field with you! Whatcha say?"
Anybody want to take one of the weapons or shields with them to fight some robots?
Flenn
|
Fortitude: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
So close!
Flenn nods. "Aye, the preacher man was right about the flashing burst. Give me a second to get my vision back, then sure, I'll give your robots a go ... Can we run a quick diagnostic to be sure they aren't goin' to glitch into murderbots on us, first?"
LINE-04 "Lynn"

Just before this adventure, I coincidentally bought an item that grants a bonus on saves vs. effects that blinds or dazzles. Thought it'd probably NEVER come up. And here we go.
Fort: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 = 16 Noooooope :<
Lynn rubs her eyes, tears beading at their corners. "Wow! What a flash."
At the offer to take weapons or shields, Lynn shakes her head. "Everyone else would probably do great with them, but all I need is my voice!" She winks to the R&D people.
The Dire GM
|
Because you've been (mostly) "good sports" as Crax put it, he convinces the R&D team to let you examine the Supremacy robots' code prior to engaging in combat with them.
If you'd like while gearing up for combat, you can make a Computers Check:
Once everyone is ready for combat, you'll all get time to turn on your environmental protections and get 1 round of pre-combat actions before things kick off!
Flenn
|
Computers: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
Flenn nods after running a diagnostic on the code. "Looks solid. Let's rock 'n roll."
LINE-04 "Lynn"
|
Computers: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
"They look like they're going to make for a dramatic battle." She gives Crax a thumbs up and seals her suit, activating its environmental protections.
Can we tell what kind of weapons the robots have?
The Dire GM
|
Can we tell what kind of weapons the robots hae?
There will be a check for that once you see them "in the field" as it were. I threw this extra check in since your group (more than any other group I've GM'd through this) has both discovered and fallen afoul of so many of the malfunctions so far!
Kitkul
|
Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Kitkuls eyes--being insectile--gets blinded by the flash.
"One does not prefer this force field unit, and requests its destruction...."
Kitkul--once unblinded--gets ready to apparently fight robots.
"One will rush them....and hopefully get ready to go supernova on them. Just telling my companions so that they know that one will be charging forward."

With Kitkul getting ready to rush in, Lynn begins to hum some additional magic into existence. Sonic ripples billow through the air until they settle into a coiling swirl behind Kitkul. The ripples twist and snap, grabbing a hold of the formian's body and connecting her to a coiled spring of force.
Casting Polymorph 2nd Level. Form is another custom one -> Momentumform. This grants: DR2/magic, 40ft land speed, a +1 size bonus on Str based skills, and most importantly, the Ferran Momentum trait. This trait reads "This creature deals an additional amount of damage equal to its character level with its first melee attack after it moves at least 10 feet in the same round."
Enjoy some bonus damage when you charge in Kitkul :)

The ysoki rubs his eyes for several seconds. "I trust you obtained the data that you need from the testing?" he says with a hopeful squeak.
The half-orc gives Lightfoot a hearty and friendly slap on the back, laughing. "Yep, that was great. Thanks! Feel free to take these shields out into the field with you if you'd like - the weapons, too!"
Crax shows you to an airlock that leads into a crater on the exterior of Apostae that Arabani Arms uses to test its combat robots. Arabani Arms has set-up several gravity generators to ensure the gravity in the area is standard levels, but otherwise cleared the area of anything that could be used for cover in combat. Crax informs you that the Arabani Arms test robots will activate as soon as they enter the testing area. For accurate combat data, the robots use live-fire weapons, though they’re programmed only to knock their target unconscious and not attack fallen combatants or use damaging area-effects when fallen foes are nearby.
You each get one round to prepare, and then...
Two pars of Arabani Arms Tyrant-Class Supremacy Robots wait in the south-eastern corner of the crater zone, springing to activation as you arrive from the opposite corner!

Botting Kaylee.
Pre-combat she turns on her Energy Shield (9)
Engineering: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
She'll tell you all that these robots have standard construct immunities, plus standard construct weaknesses to electricity and critical hits. They also have a special repulsor field that they can use to knock enemies away from them as a move action (as a Bull Rush) without provoking attacks of opportunity.
She'll then turn on her combat tracking on the green robot and fire.
Hutchket rifle: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 1 - 2 = 17 vs. KAC
Piercing Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Engineering: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Would we have had a 10-minute break to recover SP before this, given that I did take some damage earlier? Or are they rushing us through these drills?
Assuming I don't discover much more than her ...
Flenn also targets green, firing his thunderstrike sonic rifle, though his handling of the weapon seems a bit clumsier than previously.
Thunderstrike shot w/ Dex penalty vs. EAC: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 - 2 = 14
Thunderstrike damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 So
I assume I do max damage to the empty air slightly above the green robot's left shoulder. ;)

Would we have had a 10-minute break to recover SP before this, given that I did take some damage earlier? Or are they rushing us through these drills?
If you had asked Crax at any point earlier, the Arabani folks would have huffed and puffed about keeping a tight schedule but might have let you...but unfortunately not at this point, no, sorry.
Flenn is able to see that the robots are armed with integrated Corona-class Artillery Lasers that can't be disarmed while the robots are functional, and that while sturdy, they aren't built to resist "unusual effects" very well (i.e. relatively low saving throws across the board, will being the weakest).
Kaylee, Flenn, and HK all miss their shots - Kaylee's almost hitting.
The red robot lines up a shot on HK.
Corona artillery laser: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21 vs. EAC
Fire Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (7, 7) + 4 = 18

Over comms, Flenn says, "These big boys can handle firepower pretty well, but if you've got something unconventional to throw at 'em, make 'em react in ways they aren't expecting, then you've probably got a better shot to get through their defenses. Grenades might be a good option."
LINE-04 "Lynn"

Once out in the field, Lynn spends the first few moments adjusting her headset and datapad to get the correct combination of audio balance and backing music. When the robots begin firing, she tsks in a bit of overacted frustration. "Didn't anyone tell you to wait until everyone was ready?"
She flips a switch on her headset and sets a backing song playing out into the testing range. She wastes no time in ♫♪ bursting into song ♫♪ herself. As the first resonant note hits, a pulse of sound emits from her in a visible ripple, reaching out toward the robots on the other end of the field. The ripple sinks into the ground and a moment afterward the ground around the green and blue robots rises silently up into a giant 20ft high stone wall that encloses them. (See pink line for the bounds of the wall)
(Holographic Image 1st - DC17 Will to disbelieve after interaction. Also spending a Resolve Point to activate Cache Concentration, so the cache will maintain the spell while Lynn does other stuff.)

"Feel free to take these shields out into the field with you if you'd like - the weapons, too!"
Lightfoot sighs once again, checks the harness on the shield and then picks back up the sniper rifle."It is our duty, I suppose, to honor the request of our host."
Taking a deep breath, the ysoki re-activates the shield and then heads out into the test area.
When the shooting starts, Lightfoot moves to an area with a clear line of fire (I understand that none of the craters provide cover?) and that he lines up a shot against one of the robots.

Kitkul jerks a little as a couple of beams hit it. It hurts...but no worse than some of the other damage it has taken in defense of it's clan. Seeing a 'wall' appear on the two that it was going to charge, it angles its momentum into going straight north, then right into the one on the far left.

Crax comes out to congratulate you on your tests while quickly escorting you back to your shuttle. During the trip, Crax continues to pester you for any last thoughts on the tests you've performed and where Arabani Arms may improve their designs for future tests and eventual production.
When you check in with Naiaj, she apologizes for any particularly impeding malfunctions that you endured, but is grateful that she had such staunch agents taking the lead on this assignment. Naiaj hopes that in the future, the Society can arrange better trade agreements with Arabani Arms and perhaps get the improved (and fixed) versions of all these Arabani tech items in the hands of Starfinders.
With that, you have completed this quest! Stand by for your next mission briefing!
