Okay, around the outer wall it is, looking for track. Who's best at that?
Certainly not little Jim.
Cillian easily finds the boy's tracks in the sand once you are at the back of the estate; the trail begins at a gap under the wall. The investigator also finds a piece of bright fabric sticking out of the sand right where the trail begins...
"Golly! We should hurry after him!" says an earnest Jimmothy. "Hey, Lady Ghazali are any of your camels or horses missing?"
He cautiously offers offers to the others, "I believe he went this way."
So just the boy's tracks and no mount. How big of a "boy" are we talking? Little kid, preteen, late-teen, or man-boy like Don Jr?
"Good work Cillian! LET'S GO, EVERYONE!" Jimmothy races off into the sand.

Aayef ’s trail leads three miles east to the sand blasted ruins of a circular building.
Next to you:
A chunk of twisted deadwood rests atop a pile of ashes in the lee of a fallen stone column. Cinders surrounding the driftwood suggest a recent fire.
Further ahead, you see steps ascending the wreckage to a smooth stone dais. Chunks of wall and broken pillars stand as the last testament to what was once a shrine to Sarenrae. A cracked stone shrine stands before the eastern wall. Bones and other detritus litter the floor around the altar. Rubble covers some areas (highlighted in red), creating difficult terrain. The dais (area C2) is not covered in rubble.
More importantly, you also see a giant scorpion which seems to have surprised the young Aayef as he began exploring the site. The beast proved more than a match for the young noble and is about to finish him off when you approach.
MAP UPDATED - black walls are 10-foot tall and areas showing rubble are difficult terrain.

@Jain & GM:Out of curiosity, I read the Curse. I understand the following "Once per round, when a creature casts a divine spell including you as a target" as the fact that the curse takes place only when you are the target of a divine spell from a foe, not when you use a divine spell ,on yourself or someone else. Beside, it won't occur if you are, for example, given a CLW: "The effect resulting from this roll begins at the end of that enemy’s turn", so allies spells won't trigger the curse. Let' see how the GM sees it
Know nature on Scorpion: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
May Pharasma guide your blade! And fight wisely, this creature is probably poisonous. I do have the skills and equipment to treat poison, but better be cautious. Besides, the boy might need my attention soon. Try to get the scorpion out of my way, if you can, so I can tend to his wounds as soon as possible.
Once again, Mallycorn prays his goddess to help Claremguard, and waits until the scorpion isn't too near of the young boy
Cast Guidance on Claremguard, and delays until the scorpion is away from the boy
| GM PDK |
The word 'enemy' makes it clear that you can't self-trigger the curse, IMO. Btw Mallycorn: you can't cast Guidance then take the Delay action; which one will it be?
Jain.
|
It doesn't say anything about an enemy triggering the curse...
Once per round, when a creature casts a divine spell including you as a target, roll 1d20 and consult the table below.
| GM PDK |
The gods’ interference in your life has left you with strange, unpredictable powers dependent on divine whim. Bizarre side effects occur whenever you are affected by a spell from a divine caster—for better or for worse. Once per round, when a creature casts a divine spell including you as a target, roll 1d20 and consult the table below. The effect resulting from this roll begins at the end of that enemy’s turn. This effect targets only you, even if other creatures were included as targets of the triggering spell.
The 'creature' referred to in the previous sentence is referred to as 'that enemy' in the next sentence. Badly worded yes, but I wouldn't hang my character's build on that typo if I was you. 'When a creature cast a divine spell including you as a target' clearly delineates the 'creature' and the 'you' as two different persons, otherwise they would have added a sentence along the lines of 'or when you cast a divine spell on yourself'. Please seek a ruling from Tyranius if you wish to seek long-term authorization for your interpretation. Thanks!
Jain.
|
But then why doesn't the first sentence use "an enemy". Jain is also a creature and thus qualifies as a creature that targets Jain with a divine spell.
No hard feelings, but since you have opened up that this PC is subject to table variation and are going to rule in a way that invalidates the character the way I intended to play it (wacky side effects from self buffing and self healing), I will withdraw from the game and retire the character.
| GM PDK |
No hard feelings at all if you *must* withdraw, but we're two quests complete already so I will need to report those for you, if that's your choice. To be clear: this is MY interpretation of this particular rule for my table, but if you convince the powers that be that your way is THE way, than I'm perfectly fine with you continuing your shennanigans at this table! :) PS: if you create another PC for this SAME PFS number relatively quickly (we can wait a day or two right folks?) then I don't mind if you just swap your stats here and continue with something different; you don't have to 'retire' the character as you can just change stats before level 2, i.e. be it with Jain the Fighter, Jain the Unchained Rogue, [...], etc. Still Jain, but different stats. I'm pretty sure it's legal before level 2 but you're higher up in the PFS food chain so I'll let you confirm that.
Jain.
|
I don't really want to bother the other VOs with this and I agree that the wording is vague. But I also think your interpretation makes the curse less fun to play. Under your interpretation even an allied divine caster would not trigger it. Enemy divine casters aren't very common in my experience. That means this curse is going to have almost no drawbacks, which doesn't feel like a curse at all to me, especially once you start getting those higher level bonuses from it.
I have plenty of PCs. I don't need to waste time on one that is going to be drastically changed by table variation, so I'm just going to stop playing this character.
| GM PDK |
Do you want to make another character with same name/PFS# and continue right here? i.e. swap stats and carry on? actually, you just need to swap a curse and you're done I think... I don't 'feel' like this curse was the defining aspect of Jain, and actually, had no idea she had that curse until you just brought it up here in Quest #3. I actually really like the concept of Jain, solar wind and all! (how appropriate you have brought her to an ancient shrine of Sarenrae! ;) )
PS: this is not the only problem I would foresee for the god-meddled curse, especially if you read the effects table into detail... so more table variations could be expected...
Jain.

Very well. I guess since I am still first level and can rebuild, I will change curse. I think I will try the reclusive curse. I could see Jain being a bit haughty and having a "don't touch me" complex.

Alphatross' beak pierces the (delicious) head shell of the giant scorpion as it departs for Claremguard's location. The bird follows, and avoid the scorpion's giant claw as it dives for its (delicious) head (hole with exposed scorpion brain) once more! the bird misses the hole though, and its beak is frustratingly deflected from the succulent seafood like soft tissue!
Cillian pierces the sides of the beast with his glaive!
Stavarg blasts the creature head on! the creature suddenly sizzles briefly, limbs flailing wildly!
Jain sends a white hot wind towards the beast, whose insides begin to boil! First seared by Stavarg and now roasted by Jain, some of the cooked juices of the beast begin to bubble from its head hole and pierced side... Jimmothy likes that instant cooking goodness, an as the smell of seafood wafts over the battlefield, the young collector encourages Jain to cook it some more as he likes his lobster well done...
Claremguard swings and misses, and steps back, suddenly feeling like a very exposed subject of a giant scorpion's desires... but the creature does smell good at this point, so he doesn't stray too far, foreseeing an instant hyena pack-like adventurer's feast in the near future... one can almost see the warrior eyeing one of the giant claws and licking his lips...
Oh and the boy doesn't seem convinced by Stavarg's words just yet... as if he's just been asked to take the cowardly way out, and stuff...
I will update the init. tracker and everyone's status once Mallycorn's got his turn in...
