Kahwen has only a moment to be seriously infuriated, yet strangely unsurprised, by Ilzinian's betrayal before the strange babbling of the "paladin's" paramour strikes him.

"What? What are you saying? I don't understand," he mutters, his beak working along with the sounds as his tengu natural affinity for language struggles to make sense of the senseless.

Arnold, you can’t see the skeletal creature either; that’s a raised stage and there’s a curtain that goes all around it. However, it’s academic as just moving there and striking with your lance, even without the charge mods, is enough to allow Boftil to finish it off.

Raelene, my bad, I missed that, will reflect that in this post.

Raelene sends healing energy to both Arnold and Jahz, refreshing both, particularly the half-Orc...

Arnold maneuvers Friz around to get at the skeletal beast, his lance catching in the beast’s pelvis and fracturing it...

Jahz then moves back as Boftil shows Regret’s long reach, bringing the mighty hammer down once...twice...and crushing the creature’s skull in, sending fragments of bone flying in all directions as the rest of it crumples to the floor without so much as a sigh...

”NOOOOOOOO!!!! MY LOVE!!! YOU PATHFINDERS SHALL PAY FOR THIS!!!”

Arnold riding on his faithful wallaby, moves quickly to Mykel’s side and, with an innovative bounce and thrust, his javelin pierces the possessed Paladin’s left breast...his eyes glaze over and as he slowly slumps to the ground, you see a spirit exit his body, whispering wistfully, ”Aluu-Nekva...”

The paladin’s eyes briefly become alert, and he he too whispers, ”Thank you,” before closing his eyes as he continues to bleed out...

Kahwen is charging toward the combat with the Possessed Pathfinder Paladin when a wallop from a wallaby riding warrior takes him down.

His sword is going to do him no good now and he doesn't have the skills necessary to help, but he knows who does.

"Student Raelene! Ilzinian needs your aid! Quickly!" he shouts.

Kahwen’s students react quickly to his imploring. Raelene channels healing energy just in the nick of time to bring the paladin back from the brink as Jahz rushes to his side and further sustains him with his wand, causing his eyes to flutter...

”I am the real Jaohd Ilzinian. While I am in your debt I must also...beg your forgiveness...for not being strong enough to resist that evil creature. He was called Tzuur-Vaal; an ancient being long since undead, along with his hideous and ravenous mate. He made me kill some of my comrades...and made me attack you as well...I tried to fight him to no avail...and he taunted and tormented me the whole time...I have much to atone for...to my order, to my former companions, to you...and to myself. May Shelyn forgive me! I cannot forgive myself...”

Arnold:
Ilzinian appears to be forthright and sincere in what he speaks. You sense no deception and he appears distraught.

Kahwen nods his agreement with his companions. "There is nothing to forgive. Part of our lives as Pathfinders is risking not just our bodies but our minds. Only a few minutes ago, I was forced to do something I never would if I were in my right mind. I stood and did nothing while my companions fought for their lives. I regret that and am sorry for my weakness but do not expect them to expect me to ask for forgiveness."

"Now...let's check out the rest of this place to finish the explore so we can properly perform the report," he continues, heading to the curtain to search it and what is beyond.

With the fight over and Ilzinian feeling better, at least physically, you look the room over. Among the Elven Pathfinder's remains, you find a wooden object matching Captain Benarry's description of the folding boat...

Kahwen goes searching behind the curtain...and in the corner, he spies several boxes...within one there's a glass object that you suspect is the Orb of Stars. Also behind the curtain, there is a door on the south wall...

Kahwen pockets the boat because...rogue and pirate...he offers up the Orb for anyone to examine and carry, though.

Once everyone is behind the curtain, including Ilzinian, if he feels up to it, the tengu approaches the door and enacts Rogue Protocol One:

Once you pick up the Orb, you find a bottle of paint-like substance along with a pouch of dust hid underneath it. Raelene detects both as magical...

Kahwen handles the door easily and upon opening, finds a yawning pit of crackling black energy filling the southwest corner of this otherwise empty chamber...

Raelene sticks closely to Ilzinian, offering support as needed.

"I know your memories of the time must be very painful but do you have any knowledge of what is ahead, or anything we should be aware of that we may have missed?" she asks of the paladin.

You all agree that trying to descend the pit of crackling energy would be certain death. Kahwen and Boftil surmise that it might be the entry to the third level or perhaps even to Sevenfingers’s tomb itself. Perhaps it should be tackled at a later time...

You gather your findings and retrace your steps to leave the Labyrinth to meet back up with Captain Benarry. Having already been through the mazes once, you make quick time traversing them the second time...

When traveling back through the chamber that earlier had the dancing ghosts, you notice a puddle of thick fluid on the floor where you fought...

Knowledge (Arcana) DC19:
You recognize this as ectoplasm; you realize that this fluid, if collected and refined, could be used to fight against incorporeal creatures.

Sorry, I missed this detail earlier but wanted to include it because if you ID it, you get an extra boon on your chronicle. After you ID it (or not), my next post will wrap things up.

Jahz’s feet slide out from underneath him as the group makes their way back through the banquet hall. The sound, though, is less of a clatter and more of a sloop before the half-orc exclaims in delight. ”Oh look everyone - it’s ectoplasm! You make it out of the Labyrinth and make the laborious walk down the steps and find yourself back at the cove with your rowboat. You quickly make your way back to where the Grinning Pixie awaits you.

Captain Benarry greets you enthusiastically when you board. "You're back already? Outstanding! And you have the Orb? And the folding boat? Again, well done!"

Her eyes go wide as she spies the paladin. "Ilzinian, it's great to see you! But where are the others? Tell me everything..."

She listens to your debrief silently, nodding her head at some points, showing sadness at others. Once you've told her everything, she rises and bows. "The Society is in your debt for what you have recovered, as well as for what you have discovered."

Benarry turns to Ilzinian with sad eyes. "Ilzinian, my friend, I am sorry for what you had to go through...I know you may not see it this way, but your struggles, and your company's losses, were not in vain."

Upon mentioning the pit you found that was crackling with dark energy, the Venture-Captain has a hard time containing her enthusiasm. "This is a great discovery, indeed...I may have another mission for you in the near future. But that is for another day; for now, eat, drink, and relax as you may, as we journey back to Drenchport..."

Upon landing back in Drenchport, Ilzinian approaches you and bows. "My friends, I cannot thank you enough for rescuing me from that cruel being...and I cannot express my sorrow at the trouble I caused you. I will travel to a nearby temple of Shelyn to recover from this...trial." He then kneels and presents you with his magical sword, Ether's Kiss. "Please take this as a token of my gratitude. I must insist on this...in a small way it is a beginning in forgiving myself. Farewell, my friends."

Mykel watches over the meetings after their return silently, only interjecting his views when needed. He thanks the paladin for his gift.

I wish my cousin Doran was here...he loves that style of blade. It is a bit unwieldy for my fighting style. Such a gift is appreciated. Now, how about we hoist a few...to new friends, old friends and to the future endeavours... he says, grabbing a flask of wine.

Kahwen makes sure that he spreads the ashes in their wake as they row back to the [i]Grinning Pixie.[/b] He does it from the stern to make sure they don't row into them.

Kahwen's report is filled with fear, sympathy, excitement and tension. It is almost as though he is reliving the experience in front of Benarry, complete with abbreviated leaps and thrusts (though he doesn't draw his sword.)

Kahwen does not take Ilzinian's sword but does not object to someone else taking it or try to talk either party out of it.

Before the Pathfinders can scatter to the four (or more) winds, Kahwen gathers them together at what he considers an upscale drinking establishment. Of course, it's still in the docks district, so "upscale" means that the floor is clean without there being sawdust on it...mostly.

In the dim smoky interior, Kahwen orders a round for everyone then stands up on the end of the table as everyone is gathered.

"Companions! We have done well for the Pathfinders today. More importantly we have done good for a fellow Pathfinder. Though it saddens me that we could not save his companions, Ilzinian has been freed from the evil influence controlling him and can now begin the path back to glory."

"Almost as importantly, we have seen some of the greatness in store for two of the more junior members of our brave band. Please raise your mugs high for FRIEND Jahz and FRIEND Raelene!"

Arnold raises his cup as high as he can, so no higher than Boftil's head and out of sight for all others.

"It may not be what some of us are all about," he mumbles. "Those akin to Zarta Dralneen, that is, not us. But we aren't just a collective of treasure hunters. We can better accomplish such lofty goals by attending to our own: helping each other out, growing as a group. And having done all of those things today, it can be considered a great success."

Several drinks sees the wayang return to a less somber state. "So, friends, we'll all be attaching the same request in our reports? To be sent on the next Gloomspires expedition as a team?" His chuckling very slowly devolves into a thousand-yard stare.
