The Waking Rune

So, stirges bugs do need to breathe. These guys like to land on creatures stuck in the quicksand and take an easy meal. But if Onna's deliberately going under, I think the stirges will try to escape, and perhaps find another meal.

If under quicksand, it's a DC15 Swim check to get back to the surface; DC increases by +1 per round. Stirges are Tiny and so use their DEX for Swim checks.

Surprised by Onna's stratagem, the three bugs release their meal and try to swim back to the surface. But their tiny bat-like wings are weighed down by thick mud, and they remain stuck!

Quicksand rules:
Quicksand: Patches of quicksand present a deceptively solid appearance (appearing as undergrowth or open land) that might trap careless characters. A character approaching a patch of quicksand at a normal pace is entitled to a Survival check to spot the danger before stepping in, (already rolled successfully for you, above) but charging or running characters don’t have a chance to detect a hidden patch before blundering into it. A typical patch of quicksand is 20 feet in diameter; the momentum of a charging or running character carries him 1d2 × 5 feet into the quicksand.
Effects of Quicksand: Characters in quicksand must make a DC 10 Swim check every round to simply tread water in place, or a DC 15 Swim check to move 5 feet in whatever direction is desired. If a trapped character fails this check by 5 or more, he sinks below the surface and begins to drown whenever he can no longer hold his breath (see the Swim skill description).

Characters below the surface of quicksand may swim back to the surface with a successful Swim check (DC 15, +1 per consecutive round of being under the surface).

Rescue: Pulling out a character trapped in quicksand can be difficult. A rescuer needs a branch, spear haft, rope, or similar tool that enables him to reach the victim with one end of it. Then he must make a DC 15 Strength check to successfully pull the victim, and the victim must make a DC 10 Strength check to hold onto the branch, pole, or rope. If both checks succeed, the victim is pulled 5 feet closer to safety. If the victim fails to hold on, he must make a DC 15 Swim check immediately to stay above the surface.

Onna needs to pass a DC10 STR check to hold on: if this succeeds she is pulled out of the bog, into the empty square next to Kenta. If it fails, Onna must pass a DC15 Swim check or she remains beneath the surface of the bog. Neither of these checks is an action for Onna, they are checks in response to the others' rescue attempt. If the rescue attempt fails then on Onna's turn she is beneath the surface of the bog and can attempt a DC15 Swim check to get to the surface as a full round action.

Takabe summons Janira's spirit to help pull Sionnach out! A ghostly version of Janira appears next to Sionnach, "Don't worry, I'll get you out!" she says as she helps pull.

adding a spirit surge bonus to Sionnach's first strength check: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 So, this can be applies retroactively, after someone fails a check to succeed instead.

So that's the Marshal's Order ability at work - pretty cool.

Several of the kitsune skulk gather to pull Onna from the muck, but it is only when the spectre of Janira manifests that the bard is dragged back on to solid ground.

Toshiko readies a dagger to throw, should any of the bugs make it out. They're all under the quicksand currently.

You spend another day slogging through the jungle. Onna you heal 1 CON damage. The terrain is unforgiving, the climate punishing. Mid afternoon, not long before you expect the rains to start, you hear a voice ahead - "Manu, careful with that mulue you buffoon! If you bruise it you'll halve its price and I'll take the difference from your wage!'
- a second voice answers "Boss, I hear something up ahead!"

Kenta rushes forwards a brief moment after the deadly arrows zip past his face, "YOU. WILL. NOT. HURT. MY. FRIENDS!" At the last second he slips to the side to allow his allies a clear shot if they so chose. As he moved, his massive sword naturally fell into his hands and he now brings it up way over his head and slashes down towards the assumed 'leader' of the two. Hey, there's a guy back here, is he the boss? Hmm... better tell my allies I guess.

"GUY BACK HERE TOO HIDING IN THE CLEARING!"

The third assailant, a mwangi half-elf now protected by a mirror image spell, draws a wand and aims it at Kenta - upon the command word being spoken a sickly green arrow flies towards the paladin.

Hiiragi offers parley. I've moved you forwards, since you can't see the Aspis caster from your position at the back. Waolu is still out of sight, but you can just make out Manu (the fighter) so I'll apply your Ready against him.

Onna thrusts her spear whilst offering encouragement. The weapon does not find its mark.

Waolu scoffs: "We beat the ekujae handily, we'll beat you too! Whomever we don't kill we'll sell into slavery!" He fires another acidic bolt from his wand.

The green bolt strikes Kenta, but even as it flies Kenta's blade cuts Manu clean in two! Holy crap, I didn't read Kenta's Ready spoiler until after I rolled Waolu's attack - that is a heavy crit!
