"Samen, get some perspective please" Iniga remarks rather sharply sharply. "You may not like him, but the priest is largely a victim of circumstances beyond his control - someone decided his life wasn't worth anything and treated him as disposable. Now he's risking his life to help us - which takes courage. At least be positive - negativity is unlikely to be helpful."

Iniga heads off to track down Margherita next, as her family's plan had begun to take shape.

"Margherita, I need a word...in private if possible" Iniga asks quietly, watching her face carefully. Iniga didn't trust many people, but she didn't think Margherita was involved in the priests capture - her reaction to Martino's death was almost impossible to fake.

When they were in a safe location, Iniga focuses her attention on Margherita.

"I need a huge, huge favor. Actually, I need two favors. The situation is complex, but broadly speaking, someone in the Temple was keen to see the oreads gain access to the Hand. For what reason is unclear, but its likely to caused friction between us and the oread tribes. It also, would have likely caused issues in both Forge and Hearth themselves. Grico is going back to Hearth, and so, my first favor is to find someone to watch his back. Nothing formal, but I need someone to at least keep an eye on him. He is hopefully going to be able to feed me more information on the conspiracy so the longer he can stay alive, the better it is."

Iniga pauses, before holding up her hands. "I know, I know, its a huge favor to ask of you, and I know how irritating Grico can be. I know you don't give a damn about the Temple, or the politics that goes on. So I'm not asking you to do it for me, or to do it for him, I'm asking you to do it for Martino - because someone planned that ambush and knew there would be a good chance that casualties would be suffered. If we can unravel this, we can avenge Martino and I think thats a goal worth pursuing."

Iniga takes a breath, before continuing. "The second favor is a favor for me. At some point, I'm going to return to Hearth. I hope it would be someone else, but I think its going to fall to me to root out this conspiracy and any corruption within the Temple...or elseware. Its fair to say that I'll encounter opposition - I doubt they will just roll over and give up. So I'll need friends, allies within the city. Not just with you, but with the Army, the people in the cities - heck maybe even some allies within the Temple itself. Hopefully it wont come to this, but I might need a proper fighting force - if the corruption is deep enough. I'm hoping I could have your support, and/or the support of any friends or allies you might have. I don't know who to trust, except for you at this point."

Just making preparations here because I doubt this Inquisitor dude will be pleased to see Iniga when she returns :)
Also GM is there a safe place to Fireball? I might as well use the Hand command word tonight if there is a safe place. I don't want to burn the forest down!

Margherita listens, her face tightening at the mention of Martino. When you are done, she sighs, a sound both tired and knowing. "Ok. Iniga, I know you are one of the good ones. I hear what you are saying. But we have to eat, eh? Priest isn't going to pay us anymore after we drop him off in Hearth. Business-like, unapologetic, "So I have to ask, do you have the funds to help us along? Recruit new people, keep our blades sharp?"

the same clearing where you fought Spes will suffice for your fireball practice!

"I don't think it would take huge investment to keep Grico out of danger. It certainly defeats the purpose if he's walking around with a bodyguard - unless he is pretending to be scared of me or something. With that said, I wouldn't mind paying a fee to keep you 'on retainer' as it were, so that you wouldn't need to find alternative work. It would depend on how much funding you would require though"

Two options, I can try and fund it myself, or, as a Red Tongue, it might be that I have access to funds that I could 'tap' to make this work. Worst case scenario, I just ask her to act as an informal ally should she be in the city when I return which shouldn't cost much if anything.

Margherita listens more closely, hearing the meaning behind your honeyed Red-Tongue diplomacy. "You don't want to be in my ledger when I'm paying my els." She nods, continuing, "You just want us to go to Hearth like we would anyway, si, and then maybe I keep my ears open for you." She shrugs, broad shoulders making her leather armor creak. "Ok. Just gild my palm, say a hundred shields. I tell them we just got a nice gift from Iniga v'Breda with compliments, they get a little drunk, we put the rest in the war chest, and then we all remember your name next time you come, eh?"

gild my palm - ifrit phrase meaning "give me a little money" ;; shields are slang for gold pieces, as they are indeed shaped like old-times roman (in this case, ifrit) shields

assuming you agree

"Bene! Now..." Her brow, slightly windburnt from weeks of winter travel, creases a bit in thought. "I'm gonna keep the details to myself, ok? Less people that know, less chance of someone spilling the ore."

Iniga smiles enthusiastically. "Brilliant, thats exactly the sort of thing I hoped could be possible. I knew I could count on you Margherita. I'll come find you when I arrive - unless you run into me first!"

Iniga presses two hundred shields into Margherita. "Its more than we agreed, but I don't know if Martino had any dependents. You can tell them that this came from his old unit if you like, they don't have to mention me. If he has no dependents - you were still his family. Consider this a way to cover any costs involved with honoring him and his memory - since I think its unlikely the Temple will think of this."

I'm about ready now if the others want to push on.

She gives you a warrior's handshake with her right hand, and a half-embrace with her left, pulling you in close from a moment. Then lets go, saying, "Well, see you tomorrow, bel tatuaggia." She gives a small wave, then walks toward the priest's wagon, setting up watches for the night.

"Sounds more fun than hunting rocks, yes." She opens her stride a bit, warming up her thin sylphan blood in anticipation of a race.

Iniga - a 2nd success! I thought a DC 25 would be more of an obstacle!

Iniga, once more you let loose the fire of Sire Fiercesco TreeBurn. A few patches of grass smolder, but the chill wind snuffs them out. Several seconds later, the priest shuffles into the clearing, his gait showing he is still in some pain. Testily, he says, "What would you have said if some oread came snooping around here? Do you think Wyrmwood and the other eastern tribes would be happy to learn you are practicing with a powerful Volcanic artifact with the same care you would practice with...a bow, or a pogona?" He frowns.

Samen, your opponent for the day is a sylph ele, perhaps your age or a bit older. Her coloring is dark; crow's feather hair and beady black eyes. Ivory skin, veined with bluish-gray. She wears brown magus robes of a rough material, likely homespun.

When the gold shield lands with the beaming face of the Warrior up, she smiles thinly. "How about Creation." Her colorless voice makes it a statement.

I've just been really lucky. Makes up for all my terrible initiative rolls recently :)

At the priests remarks, Iniga struggles to keep her temper in check. "Thats rich coming from you, who was planning on using it in an aggressive manner against the tribes to force cooperation. As to what I would have said? If you recall the relics history, it was used to help the oread tribes, by eliminating a dark elemental. The tribes need our help again against the corrupted Fey - this may help with that."

Iniga paused for a moment before sighing.

"Ifrits today have lost sight of whats important. The fight against the Dark is all encompassing, and all consuming - it needs to be, when the enemy is on our doorstep. Unfortunately, it means that when we look at something, we can only see its use as a weapon, or force of destruction. Any ifrit child can tell me all about a Fireball spell, but how many of them would remember that fire, in its purest form, represents light, illumination, warmth, comfort. I'm not denying that the Hand has destructive potential but Sire Fiercesco TreeBurn stood for peace, unity, cooperation between ifrits and oreads. He would have despised what this relic now stands for - a weapon to use against the oreads not in support of them. Is it any wonder the tribes hate us so?"

"So yes, I'm practicing with a powerful relic - as I would any artifact or relic, because I intend to use it and I learn by practicing. I'm not using it against the oread's though, I'm using it for its intended purpose - for what Sire Fiercesco TreeBurn stood for."

Relic Hunter Iniga incoming!
Also this is her politics stance I guess - if she has one.

Samen adopts his resting scowl face for a moment, considering what creative skills he might possess. His thoughts drift back to Rokeridge and the life he lived there. All of his ambitions then were focused on learning and providing evidence for his theories. He had never been an artistic sort, and spent his time in books, not in the arts. His father had even kept him out of the mines, so he didn't even know how to carve the ground very well.

With a sudden realization that even the most mundane thing can be artistic, Samen's frown turns into a sardonic smirk. "Very well, ma'am. I choose Benthic script, formed from water itself."

have you given him your last name? He would be calling you "Miss v'Breda" if you did

Without waiting for a response, he continues, "They look for the weak. The ones about to fail the holy tests, or who get caught up in the city life. Drinking. Eles." His hands fidget in front of him.

"And they promise so much. They say it will be all right, that Volcano chooses weak vessels and fills them with his magmous strength." Fidget, clench.

Shaking his head now, "But the price of Volcano's glory runs high, and I saw els eaten from the inside by the rituals of that place. I..." he laughs, gesturing to himself, "was apparently unworthy even of death. The rituals did nothing. No power. No screams. Nothing." He sighs.

"So I was sent back to my dismal life of failure for several more years, before the Inquisition scented me as a rotting piece of meat to use in a different endeavor." He meets your eyes. "So here I am, rejected by gods, Inquisition, and Temple alike."

He grabs his stomach and grimaces. "Ugh, these unpleasant memories irritate my ulcer. No more for today. I wonder if these rock-eaters have access to cantaloupe. I'm going to find something to eat. You are welcome to join me, I suppose."

Yeah, I see no reason not to give him my last name. Margherita knows as well.

Iniga considers the question.

"O.k, fair point, it might not technically have been the gods. With that being said though, how else would you explain receiving a vision of you, referencing the Efreeti Tango - a connection or scene I had no reason to suspect. With Divination, you need to know what to look for before you cast the spell - and I saw this vision in my sleep - no spellcasting required."

"So, I guess you are looking for someone or something that already knew your prior history, powerful enough to share that knowledge with me in my dreams over a long distance. You are correct that its not guaranteed to be divine sent - but the alternative would be someone or something with immense magical power with the strength and the inclination to tell me about the link - and that list would be small. I think the gods are likely or at least something rivaling their strength"

"As for you, I wouldn't be too harsh on yourself. You might have been rejected by a priest, but I doubt you have been rejected by the gods. You still have divine magic yes? Do you find it an accident that an ifrit was nearby to rescue you? If nothing else, your experiences have taught you humility something sadly lacking in many agents of the Temple today. It is humility, that will hopefully drive cooperation between the Army and Temple to better allow us to challenge the Dark. I wouldn't be disheartened - if nothing else, the gods have not forgotten you."

"I will however, need you to tell me about the rituals, and the members you saw. I want to be able to recognize the traces of them, I want to be able to research them, discover what they are meant to achieve. I'll want to know who was involved, recruiting, completing rituals, leading. Maybe not today, but I'll need to know before my friends and I leave. I hate walking into something unprepared".

Darn, this got away from me again length wise. Sorry. I might research Efreeti Tango / rituals / weird divination in Branch (in addition to Hand) if we find the time. There are a lot of exciting threads to research!

Lots to look into!

Iniga, the priest looks unconvinced at your reassurances, clearly more comfortable with his own cynicism. At your last request, he nods. "Yes, I'll...I'll think about those days and tell you what I remember. It will give you a start, anyway. A different day, though.
Not today."

He turns around, waving vaguely in your direction, walking away now. "And--no offense intended--but I believe I shall eat alone today. Your curiosity, while refreshing, is also exhausting. Good day, Miss v'Breda."

Iniga, feel free to join Samen, Wamblee at lunch. I'll let the scene sit for a bit, probably update tomorrow.

All: Be thinking about what you want to do after lunch, into the afternoon and evening - the dance ; more tshala ; something else, etc

I have no plans for the afternoon / evening. I don't realistically think I can go to the dance since I have the same problem that Marianne pointed out. So no plans but don't let Iniga hold you back Wamblee and Samen!

Marianne waves Iniga over. "Come on! You can't hide that hair in a crowd of oreads. Eat with us! We can retell the story of how Wamblee is annoying and he keeps winning at everything!" Her tone is between exasperated and amused. She is pecking at a handful of acorns from her field rations, but she doesn't seem hungry.

Iniga walks over and sits down, picking at her food - not super interested in acorns. "Nothing annoying about winning - its always nice stamping your superiority over someone - there's something satisfying about it. Well done Wamblee" she remarks in an amused tone, raising an eyebrow at Marianne.

"Why, I remember winning an arm wrestling competition once - perhaps I was a little lucky but I never let my opponent forget it - it was a wonderful feeling." she quips lightly, flashing a quick smile.

Wamblee nods as Iniga sits.

"It was a satisfying morning, that is true. Tashunk is quite the competitor. How did your own morning fare?"

Samen, characteristically, harrumphs. "Personally, I don't understand all this pointless competition. Wouldn't we all be better off if we cooperated toward common goals, like routing the fey, instead of trivial matters like running or creativity? It's an amusing diversion, but I don't know how this helps us in the long run."

Samen actually brings up a good point, I have forgotten why we are still hanging around and not moving on. Doubtless there is something I'm forgetting, and we now have the dance that Wamblee is invited to, but I don't expect us to be here much longer.

"My morning was fine Wamblee. I had some discussion with the priest - he finally felt confident enough to tell me about the Efreeti Tango, so it was rather useful in that regard to know a little about what I'm going up against. As for 'pointless competition' - I don't have too much of an issue with it. If it keeps everyone at the peak of skill and fitness it helps hone our edge - I expect we will need it against the fey."
