The Hunger:

Hunger Rules

Where the living suffer physically from starvation, undead suffer mentally. After long enough without a “meal,” even the most arrogant vampire becomes a bestial creature of instinct. Withdrawal weakens the monster, and as its natural defenses fail, its behavior becomes irrational, particularly when it’s around sources of what it is denied or has denied itself.

A carnivorous or otherwise life-draining undead may safely go a number of days equal to its Hit Dice without a dose of its preferred meal before it starts to feel the effects of hunger. Each additional day after this grace period, the undead must make a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the undead creature’s Hit Dice, + 1 for each previous check).

If the undead creature fails its save, it enters withdrawal and begins to take penalties according to the Withdrawal Penalties table (see page 23). It must continue to save each day until it feeds again. Additional failed checks increase the penalties as shown on the table. Feats and abilities that affect mortal hunger (such as Endurance or a ring of sustenance) do not apply to vampire hunger.

An undead that is suffering from withdrawal grows increasingly drawn and gaunt (or diaphanous and tattered, for incorporeal undead). Any attempts by the creature to conceal its undead nature with the Disguise skill are penalized as noted on the table.

An undead that suffers withdrawal is acutely aware of its unfulfilled addiction; if presented with the chance to feed, it might be compelled to do so, regardless of the consequences. Anytime it comes within 10 feet of a helpless creature that can sate its desire, it must make another hunger save at the current DC. Failure means it falls upon the helpless creature—whether friend or foe— and attempts to consume or drain it. Until the undead has fed, it can take no action other than to feed from this helpless creature or to enable itself to feed (such as a moroi grappling a creature so it can use its blood drain). During this feeding frenzy, the undead creature takes a –2 penalty to its AC.

Withdrawal Effects

An undead that hasn’t fed recently suffers from withdrawal, depending on the number of hunger saves it has failed.

As shown on the Withdrawal Penalties table on the facing page, an undead creature suffering from withdrawal takes penalties to channel resistance, on Will saves, to Strength and Charisma scores, to damage reduction, to fast healing, and on Disguise checks. The withdrawal penalties apply only if the creature has the ability in question. For example, a hungry moroi’s damage reduction decreases, but a hungry ghoul ignores that column because it doesn’t have damage reduction. All penalties are removed when the creature completes a single feeding. This only ends the withdrawal penalties, and does not grant the creature any feeding bonuses beyond those granted by the creature’s ability associated with feeding.

If the undead’s Strength or Charisma penalties equal its Strength or Charisma, it becomes inert, helpless, and wracked by nightmares of hunger; it only revives if fed by another. An undead creature’s channel resistance, damage reduction, and fast healing cannot fall below 0.

"Oh no, have you found a new experiment again?" Allizsah asked as she leaned against Veldrin with an inquisitive look.

However Necril speak soon followed. "Do you think that makes the flowers grow better? What feed them a vampires blood to begin with?" She questioned as she reached out, allowing her fingers to softly trace the petals of one flower.

Allizsah reaches into the gates to touch a flower. It feels soft quite unlike any rose you've felt before.

Raindrops from above pelt Allizsah' hand. The water is hard compared to the touch of the flower beneath. You both see the flowers near the once being touched begin to shift towards Allizsah's hand...

Then someone from within shouts, "You! Remove your hand from the fence at once!" The woman is running towards you both.

Veldrin immediately complies, stepping back from the fence, hands in the air to show he is no threat "Apologies, my wife and I were just out for a mid-morning stroll, and were overcome by how beautiful your flowers are!"

When a priest falls:

Thulmerë opens his eyes, having survived another day. Sheltered from the oppressive sun, embraced by darkness.

He tinkers with his armour, transforming his armour to take on the guise of a paladin in a set of ancient angelic looking armour. Walking over to the small table in his room, he slumped into his chair and concentrate on dominated priest. Putting his machinations into work, to break the will of the priest, to corrupt him.

"Come to my room priest, there are dark forces at work in this town and I need to speak with you, to give you aid in your and my mission. Leave your holy symbol in your room, we need to lay low. They know enough as it is."


"Oh I'm sorry." Allizsah said as she took her hand away and returned it to Veldrin's arm. "Yes, I would like to know how you get them to look so beautiful. My garden at home pale in comparison."

The Priest enters your room from the hall. The suns rays pierce the hallway, even seeing them causes you pain. Quickly enough he shuts the door, "Who are you and what is it you want?" He speaks with great suspicion.

Thulmerë holds up his hand, "For a priest of the sun, you don't seem to be a morning person." He chuckles at his own joke.

Some foul necromancer of these lands has laid a curse upon me. Giving me the intolerence of the sun like some dreaded wraith, a knight in service of Vigil! How ironic. I've been traveling these lands ever since destroying the creatures that dwell it the dark and prey upon the innocent."

"It's no mere chance that we've both made it to this town, there is a great evil in this town. I can feel it, you can too, can't you? I believe the lady of this town might have something to do with it. Perhaps we can team up and put an end to it?"

Murnau's keen ears pick up Thulmere's discussion with the priest, and he sighs internally. He motions to Caligo, who is cleaning his armor and glowing red sword, to relay his messages,

Thulmere:

You hear a familiar voice speaking into your mind,
I thought we discussed this. We are to prioritize stealth above all else. You keep meddling with this priest, and we'll be found out. We also need to keep moving. We can come back later if you are so concerned about the Lady. But we have a mission, and I have every intention of actually completing it, unlike everyone else, it would seem.

Thulmerë looks down, his tear ducts dried up years ago. Pretending to look sad he looks back to the priest."I understand, I cannot speak for your brothers in arms. Dark forces are against us, but we must remain strong. In the darkest of times, our light must burn ever bright."

Thulmerë walks into Veldrin's chamber, wearing mithral plate suited for the most noble of paladins. "My name is Ureste Asaphrastus, I was a knight in the service of Watcher-Lord Ulthun II of Vigil."

Within a couple seconds, his chuckling breaks the silence. He quickly transforms his armor back to its Azlanti origins, fitted comfortably over his tunic. "I spoke to the Sun Priest, Leeman is his name. He has sworn off his family name in reverence for his slain family, killed by vampires of course. Not the first or last time I've heard such a tale or had to end a bloodline. He seems to have believed every lie I spoke to him and believes there is a great evil in this town. "

Murnau finally speaks after what seems like an eternity of silence, "We have a mission- and a rather time-sensitive one at that. I say we move on from here. There is little to gain, and much to lose. Even if we do meet this mysterious unaligned 'Lady,' so what? She's stayed separate from the Council for this long, and I imagine she has her reasons and wouldn't take kindly to strangers pressuring her into helping their cause. I'm confident we can take the Drow by ourselves, and we have wasted enough time here in this pointless little town. We have far more pressing concerns at hand."

Thulmerë begins to pace back and forth across the room. " I'm torn, one hand we've been given an urgent mission, one that could change our very way of "life". He pauses for for a moment." Yet I'm sure the council would be greatly displeased with us if such a force is slaying vampires and using our blood. While chances are slim, we could learn something and gather resources for our mission. If there is anything to gain our houses would gladly benefit from it."

Murnau dismisses Thulmere's concerns, "If you're so concerned about it, I can send a message back to the Council, and they can decide what to do with the information. Likely, they, if they even thought it was worth pursuing, would assign a fresh group to investigate. Knowing when to delegate is how I have stayed alive for this long, and I don't intend to change that now. We have our mission, I say we stick to it. Let the Council worry about what is happening here and what to do about it. They won't punish us for following our mission, and I have no intent of gallivanting through the city on a wild Hunter chase while Lener's group is actually following orders."


"Could we not look into this upon out return to the council?" Allizsah asked with a simple shrug. "If we leave the underdark the same way we enter it than we have to pass back through no?"
