"Wrong choice."
Semsephiel watches as Erin flies overhead. He understands what she's after immediately. Drop the summoner, drop the eidolon.
Not. On. My. Watch.
"So much as scratch her," he growls, "And I will remove your eyelids and force you to watch while I rip out your intestines and tie a noose in them, which you will hang yourself with, and you will be grateful I gave you the chance to end the PAIN!"
And he throws his flying blade.

Wait a minute. It's the bat making the acrobatics check, right? But you can't do acrobatics if you're wearing medium or heavy armor or are at above a light load - does Erin and all of her gear weigh less then 76 lbs?I think so... I was pretty careful about the weight of her gear. Erin herself weighs 27 lbs., her armor weighs 20, her bat's armor is 15, and since she's not wearing her backpack, the rest of her gear shouldn't weigh more than 12.
I also have no idea where you got +24 damage, looks like you doubled it twice? I'd also like a breakdown of the +15 attack bonus, because it doesn't seem to match what's on your sheet. I'd prefer if you broke out temporary bonuses, like the ones from raging and charging.
When not raging, Erin's base damage is 1d6+6 (+4 Str x 1.5 for a two-handed weapon). When raging, that increases to 1d6+9 (+6 Str x 1.5). With Power Attack, that increases to 1d6+12. On a mounted charge, the whole thing is doubled to 2d6+24.
Her current attack bonus is:
+3 BAB, +6 Str, +1 size, +1 mwk weapon, +2 morale from crowd, +1 higher ground, -1 Power Attack, +2 charging = +15
Let me know if any of that seems off to you!
Also, sorry if this whole thing is a bit over-the-top, I admit I didn't expect this tactic to be so deadly. If you'd like, I'd be glad to tone it down a bit - we could forget the mounted charge thing and just call it a normal attack.
Pogug
Yeah, lance builds are no joke. They end being more than a little ridiculous in terms of damage. The only real weakness is that the ride skill ends up being used all over the place: to attack two-handed, not fall off when taking damage, and some other things. The DCs are pretty low, so I think Erin should pass all of them without even rolling.
whosawhatsis
Erin, as you correctly assessed, it does seem a bit over the top. The math does seem to check out, except for the fact that I'm not going to allow you to use the lance two-handed while riding. The lance description says that it can be used one-handed while charging, and I'm going to say that you need the other hand to hang on, so no 1.5x damage. Since as far as I can tell your last move was at least 90 degrees to your current movement AND almost straight down, I'm also going to say that in order to make it a successful charge, you'll need two DC15 fly checks (one for halting your downward speed, and one for the >45 degree turn). Otherwise you can still make the movement and attack, but it's not a charge. Fair enough?
It may be moot, though, because I think Semsephiel just incapacitated Epsilon. BTW, how high off the ground were you?
Zarine Greenblood
Zarine continues her performance (free action), still boosting Nathaniel's rolls (and now Team North as well, since they have joined our cause). She also tries to shoot down the bat.
Performance Combat: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 Assuming I need another roll on this for the "combat" aspect of it, even though my actual performance is just continuing from last round as a free action. Unfortunately, the score itself is not improved. I have no idea if the actual words matter, or if only the die roll does, but will post the flavor after the attack. Also, if I have to choose performance combat or an attack (not sure how that works, sorry), then just count the attack. The performance will still be there... just a free action performance continuation as bardic performance rather than a combat performance.
Attack the Bat: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage (if that hits the bat): 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 (Bludgeoning damage... using bludgeoning arrows if it matters.)
Addressing the audience:
Our hero Clyde's life hangs in the balance as he is attacked by the vicious bat-witch and her minions. He falls, unconscious but alive, as the other members of the carnival see the truth of the matter and choose to join in the cause of goodness, Nate the Great takes up his master's cause and prepares to defend himself against what seems an overwhelming and powerful foe.
It is in our darkest hours that the true light of goodness shines the strongest, and when we attract unworldly power to our cause. Let us all remember to strike against cruelty and tyranny in our lives <This is where she fires her arrow.> Because, no matter how evil would like us to believe otherwise, every single effort counts in the struggle for good. We *can* all make a difference, if we unite to fight against evil!

Sounds great. I'm fine just leaving it as a normal move and attack, we'll save the mounted charges for the BBEGs. In that case, would the Acrobatics check be possible, or is that not an option?
Speaking of which, was Semsephiel's attack of opportunity directed toward Erin or her bat?
whosawhatsis
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Zarine's performance continues to fail to impress the crowd. Assuming that she doesn't actually want to attack the unconscious bat, I'll divert that attack to Erin... Her arrow flies across the field and strikes the newly-fallen bat rider. Erin takes 2 points of lethal bludgeoning damage. Because the glancing blow does minimal damage, the audience does not notice that her attack did lethal damage (this time).
whosawhatsis
BTW, how high off the ground were you?
Since Semsephiel's reach allowed the AoO to be made early in your movement, and your last turn was attacking a medium creature from above with a 10ft reach weapon, I'm going to say just short of 20ft up, which means 1d6 falling damage for Erin and Epsilon.
Erin beat me to rolling and got a 3, so I'll use that.
Epsilon has 14 points of nonlethal damage. 6 converted points from Semsephiel's attack and the falling damage are lethal, so Epsilon is unconscious and at 5HP. Erin has 5 points of lethal damage (including Zarine's arrow). Erin is also prone.

Got it. Since Semsephiel's still within her reach, and she only took a move action before the attack of opportunity, can she try to attack him from the ground when she lands?

No. I'm going to say that with the fall and landing prone, your turn is over. In fact, Semsephiel has combat reflexes, so I think he can take an AoO against you on the way down as well if he wants...

[ooc]If that's the ruling, then he most certainly does want.
The flat of Semsephiel's flying blade crashes into the bat, sending it reeling through the sky. With a snap of his wrist he brings the weapon back to him, whirls it about to build momentum and sends it out again- all before the halfling has hit ground.
Performance Combat for dropping Epsilon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Flying Blade: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 (+1 raging song, -4 nonlethal) (an unfactored +1 if Semsephiel succeeded his performance combat check. (If I'm understanding the rules right))
damage: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 6, 6) + 7 = 22
It's about now that Semsephiel finishes his rant about the eyelids and the disembowelment.
EDIT
That attack is against flatfooted AC, right?
whosawhatsis
whosawhatsis wrote:Would uncanny dodge help with that?Semsephiel Godscourge wrote:That attack is against flatfooted AC, right?Yes, and you get the +1, which I believe is just enough to make the attack hit.
Yes, so you are not technically flat-footed, but since you're in freefall and at least partially entangled in an unconscious giant bat, I'm going to say you are immobilized enough to lose your Dex bonus to AC, which for this purpose I think amounts to the same thing.
Which means that Erin has 22 points of nonlethal damage and 5 of lethal.
The crowd goes wild at Semsephiel's display with his flying blade as Erin, previously the biggest threat in the match, is laid low.
Nathaniel Whitecloak
Nathaniel watched the scene with Semsephiel and Erin and the wolfbat play out, wincing as the huge eidolon swatted the creature out of the air, and then inflicted a grievous injury on the halfling as she fell. Seeing the small woman laid out upon the ground right next to his own unconscious companion, the young man shrugged, thinking it a good as time as any to try to take out the dangerous foe.
Wary of both the lance of the prone woman and the strange powers of Semsephiel, Nathaniel proceeded to cartwheel and backflip his way over to Erin, both to put on a decent show for the onlookers and confuse any possible attacks against him. The young man almost flubbed to begin with, but improvised quite nicely, pulling off a rather stunning set of acrobatics before ending up next to the halfling.
He brandished his dagger for a split second, yelling, "I shall avenge our fallen prince!" He lunged down, scoring a rather soft hit as he smacked her with the flat of the blade.
Acrobatics, Zarine Story-Telling, Derring Do: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 10 + 2 + (6) + (6) + (5) = 37

Evalee Ribbinz
Evalee stands behind and to the side of Semsephiel, who is under attack from two directions.
Well, we got their attention . . ."Sephy, I think we made ourselves a target. In siding with the underdogs, we made them into overdogs, but overall it seems we are the top dogs . . . and also outnumbered."
"I concur, Ms. Baker." Semsephiel hisses as he shifts his weight, aggravating his knife wound. Black ichor is already solidifying over the injury. "Things may go south for team north. You should pull back from the melee, as is you're a liability."
Evalee hastens to do so, using the run action to cross the stage.
As she leaves, Semsephiel calls out a last word of advice. "If they knock me out, just surrender. There's no reason for us to both earn concussions."
Semsephiel Godscourge
Semsephiel turns his attention to the mesmerist and the knife master. He repositions out of their flank.
One might think that Semsephiel is less dangerous at close quarters, where he can't build momentum for his chain-weapon. And one might be terribly, terribly wrong. Keeping his flying blade poised to strike at those entering or leaving his reach, he instead lashes out at Aphrashai with the extra pair of arms he keeps hidden for just such purposes.
Claw: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 +1 raging song, +1 morale, -4 nonlethal damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 +1 raging song, +1 enlarge person

"Apologies."

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 Damage (pulled): 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 4
Both kukri find flesh and Ashak quickly brings them back to a defensive position, wary of semsephiel's claws. "And mine as well."
Performance Combat (multiple hits): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 Blood dripping from his knives Ashak makes a show of tossing his blades in the air while flipping and spinning about his foe, the blood arcs through the air before splattering across the ground. He glances back at Erin. "It would seem our queen has been struck a mighty blow, but she'll back on her feet, and more determined than ever."
Aphrashai the Mystic
Aphrashai steps back and stares at the infernal beast towering over him. He locks eyes with Semsephiel, and is startled by the raw power constrained by the summoner's bonds. No matter, he can be molded like the rest. Aphrashai snaps his fingers and Semsephiel feels compelled to laugh.
Casting hideous laughter on Semsephiel, he will have to make a DC 15 will save and will have -2 on the save, along with -2 to attacks. All others will get +1 damage.
Pogug
Pogug moves to the south, his little feet moving across the dirt. He fires a crossbow bolt at the Mystic. His shrill voice ceases, but the noise still persists as an echo.
Lingering Performance feat.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 +1 from morale, -4 for firing into melee.
The bolt hits the ground feet from Aphrashai's position.
Erin Reynor
Hmm... at this point, Erin is more or less surrounded by bodies, between Clyde, her fallen bat, and the unfortunate horse. Given her diminutive stature, would she be able to use those bodies as cover to stand up without provoking an attack of opportunity?
Erin Reynor
Well, in that case...
Bruised, bloodied, but not yet broken, Erin grits her teeth and gets to work. Flat on her back, she raises an arm, wincing, and jabs it against her hip. A thin stick of wood slides into her hand, and she presses it to her side, muttering a word under her breath. The flesh around her wounds starts to bubble and churn, and she grimaces in pain.
Casting infernal healing from her wand, healing one point of lethal damage and one point of nonlethal each round.
Hearing the audience's disapproval, she shoots them a look that can only be described as scathing, then drops her wand and grips her lance tightly with both hands. Performance combat check to avoid a negative reaction.
Performance Combat: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

But Aphrashai was expecting exactly that- the mystic looked almost casual as he stepped into the attack, dodging the killer talons. Looked almost casual . . . and certainly smug.

Zarine continues her performance (free action), still boosting Nathaniel and Team North's rolls (+1 morale on Reflex saving throws and +2 competence on Dexterity-based skill checks. Allies who move at least 10 feet get +1 dodge to AC until the start of their next turn.)
Zarine shoots another arrow at Erin.
Attack Erin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Missing horribly.
Text of Performance (addressing the audience):
Despite Nate the Great and the forces of good fighting against the bat-witch, knocking her from the sky, and performing astounding feats of acrobatics to try to end her reign of terror, her evil seemed to flourish.
She healed herself with a spell of pure darkness, using the blood of devils to keep her own life going. This was a magic that would taint any good person, but also the very blood that sustained her unnatural life.
Unbeknownst to the bat-witch, this perversion of nature turned the very gods against her. <This is where Zarine fires her arrow.> And while the Bat-witch might be able to resist my puny efforts to take her down, the gods support all of us in resisting evil by whatever means necessary. I urge all of you watching to join in our cause. Add your voices (and your rotten fruit if applicable) to our cause. Down with the Bat-witch!

Nathaniel felt pretty badly about trying to swat the downed Erin, but he knew the small woman was much stronger than she appeared and was a very dangerous foe. Dagger: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Nate frowned as Zarine's arrow caused Erin to roll away, inadvertently twisting to where his small blade slapped against her armor. The Juggler held up his hands in a 'whatcha gonna do' manner quickly before setting himself yet again.

Ashak brings his blade up underneath Nathaniel's armpit. He winks and pulls his blade back in a stream of red, leaving a long shallow gash. He feigns several more strikes around his opponent in a graceful display, while he leaps into the air flipping heels over head and lands gracefully back on his feet.
Aphrashai the Mystic

She slams her spiked shoulder guard into the back of Nathaniel's knee with all the strength she can muster.
Flanking armor spikes Power Attack.

Nate hissed in pain as the kukri struck, though he still managed to grin. "Not as promising a predicament as it once was." The young man then gasped in surprise as the wily Halfling woman rolled her spikes into him, inflicting another wound. Twirling his dagger about, he took a step away from the acrobat, determined to make him work for his battlefield advantages as he swung once again at Erin.

Oops. I didn't mean for them to swarm Nathaniel . . . though, in retrospect, it seems pretty obvious that they would. Like, really really obvious. Oops.
She isn't a combat tactician, but it seems pretty obvious that team west is winning. Well, someone has to win. Might as well be them . . . and it might as well happen before anyone cuts me open. She considers putting her hands up and climbing out of the ring. But she looks at Pogug, and realizes how unfair to him it would be to give up now, after she was the one who convinced Semsephiel to give up their protected corner.

Don't know how you run summoned monsters, do you want me to roll initiative, or does it act on mine? Also, can it act this round or is it summoning sick?
AFAIK, summoned creatures always act immediately when they appear, (which is the beginning of your next turn in the case of Summon Monster spells, but is immediate for the Summoner's SLA) and they continue to act on that character's initiative.
